I wouldn't say Warden is normal, dude comes from a crazy lineage.

He's also supposed to be wearing some weird batman like outfit if his unfinished lines from others are to be believed.

Are you sure hes not just wearing a police uniform with a cape?
11
u/KiruDakaz 2h ago
Larp, he is not a cop

u/Zealousideal-Arm1682 2h ago
Yeah anyone doing a quick search on his backstory,in or out of game, would immediately tell you he's not a British cop and way darker.
He's the second(?) most unfinished character at the moment next to Sinclair.

I want a true normal dude character. Like all of his abilities are just everyday stuff that a normal guy could do and he just has a shitty little handgun.

it would be cool if he had some eldritch secret that everyone can see but him and other humans and he was otherwise totally normal and didn’t know it and maybe it was like an eldritch guardian angel that liked him and is some supremely powerful creature like even the patrons are nervous he’s in the ritual. but he has no clue and how it manifests in his kit is that he is just EXTREMELY lucky. so he flinches when he shoots but the bullets fly straight and his abilities are all loony toons shit like a piano falls from the sky and does aoe stuff like that. he could be pretty wealthy and confident because of his guardian haunt, but he’s humble about it and attributes everything to “luck”.
1
u/Solareds Mina 2h ago
I had the vague idea for a "normal guy" hero with an eldritch secret that had a passive ability interacting with Boon levels, like whatever is wrong with him is going ham during the ritual, feeding off the patron's boons and changing him into an abomination of sorts throughout the ritual. His abilities starting out as mundane and desperate stuff like throwing pocket sand and turning into I dunno, spewing out evil eldritch sand, I guess.
1
u/Sun__Moon__Stars 2h ago
That was Trapper, his motivation for the ritual was to get courtside seats for the Knicks.
Honestly I think I’d vibe with Violet more if they’d pushed her further in that direction, as it stands she falls into an uncomfortable middle ground where she doesn’t have a ton going on character wise but she’s stilll too fantastical to be an outright joke character the way Trapper was

The Lash is The Lash, he has enough character to justify him
Warden is a narratively significant character in what he intends to do, and his conversations have tons of potential, except he has literally none
Holiday has a bunch of background and is trying to actually do something, and her conversations are solid, though she isn't as good as others
Violet just seems incomplete to me, I don't think they've decided what they want to do with her yet, so they're not doing anything. I don't think she should have been presented or added in her current state, even if the game is unfinished and we're engaging with it through that lens, releasing her like this locks how they can develop her without throwing out a ton of stuff and reversing our perception of her.

But have you considered her other unique traits like uhhh....Her parental issues! Wait no Pocket has those too. She's depressed! Dang Victor is as well. She's anxious! Goddammit Paige is already in the game? She's concerned about her long-term career prospects! Ah for fucks sake McGinnis AND Danny?!
Eureka I've got it...she smokes, likes Billy, and is incredibly horny. Booyah take that Violet haters. Find me a character that ticks all of those boxes!

I was gonna say she can drift via one of her abilities but Vyper can do that too holy shit
this doesn’t change my opinion though I think every Deadlock character is awesome

Yet another Violet slander going for "We dont need normal humans, there are no places for them" then post 4 "normal humans that do fit"; so they do fit there, but then you have "oh well her wishes are bad", then forget we dont know the wishes of half the cast and some are still ass anyways.
19
u/HEROBR4DY 3h ago
Gotta love slandering complaints, it’s not the individual parts that are disliked. It’s that her personality does not match or vibe with her goals or the game. She’s a very timid person who willingly joined a death match for exposure, make her a mad artist or egotistical or hell even lean heavier on the anxiety and make her a nervous wreck. Something that’s got teeth rather than just “the artist” from every other game
7
u/SparkyTJ14 3h ago
She's not timid though, that's a misread of her character. She's been at the picket lines with Billy which is pretty bold behaviour.
That was her flaw though - she got too ambitious by joining the ritual. Only now has she realised she's out of her depth which is why she appears afraid given the circumstances. This isn't an inconsistency in her writing, it's just not a story that's easily spoonfed to the audience.
2
u/HEROBR4DY 3h ago
You are describing her ambition like a flaw in a job interview, her protesting doesn’t disqualify her being timid. People feel comfortable in crowds when standing alone would terrify them, I’d also be hard pressed to put standing outside with a sign on the same level as murdering 6 people and teaming up with serial killers. She’s too mundane for what she’s doing, give her some teeth or make her sobbing after each kill.

None of those guys are normal though. Holliday and Lash are trained in combat and you'd expect any notable combatant in a supernatural world to have some supernatural training. Warden is from a line of alchemists. McGinnis uses magic in her tech.
When people complain about Violet being normal they're saying it breaks their suspension of disbelief that someone training to be an artist who is only described to have normal everyday problems somehow has the ability to kill gods and monsters.
Also note that none of the normal people here have normal problems like Violet either. Warden wants to stop the apocalypse, Holliday is chasing a magic serial killer, Lash has to maintain his image after fighting a magic robot, and McG needs to test her magic weapons against supernaturally powerful people
Meanwhile Violet has ordinary people to impress
I think this could easily be fixed by her causing some problem for herself with her magic though, also implying she gets herself in trouble like Billy more could do to make it more believable that she can kill.

u/ginger6616 3h ago
I wouldnt consider half of those normal. Warden was groomed from birth to fight evil, lash is lash, holiday is looking for a serial killer who wronged her, and mcgunnis is a genius making weapons of war using soul power. How are any of those normal people? Normal people is like Solomon and Paige

u/ASidewaysBanana Lash 2h ago
How dare you call ✨The Lash™✨ a normal fucking human. God's gift to combat is not a mere human.
19
u/Playful_Connection38 3h ago
Normal?
The fucking soul manipulating war criminal?
The fucking occult monster hunter?
The ancestor of a historical figure wielding his gun?
The most pretentious asshole in all of history?

Normal? The successful artist who makes walls of paint?
Plus baseline everyone here is OK with killing people for their own goals

u/StrangerPen Paige 2h ago
Psst, it's descendant, not ancestor. An ancestor came first, (prefix "an" as in antecedent).

Besides maybe Holliday none of those people are particularly normal.
Unless you regularly come across fanatical super soldier, fight club sailor with a galactic ego and a mid 1900s Tony Stark level magic engineer and war criminal...

Okay I wouldn't call Warden normal. He's part of a family of alchemists for pete's sake.
2
u/Ok-Woodpecker4734 3h ago
Also just realized I should've made Warden the one throwing the football and make it a flask FUCK
3
u/Ok-Woodpecker4734 3h ago
Wardens still just a standard baseline human at the end of the day. This was posted in response to people saying it was novel that Violet is a normal human in a cast of lots of various supernatural types and Ixians when we've already got a number of baseline humans.
2
u/Zealousideal-Arm1682 3h ago
The problem isn't baseline human,it's her being boring as shit and completely uninteresting.
For Christ's sake her only notable features are "likes art" and "artist".We don't even get real family drama.
1
u/MoneyHazard123 Mo & Krill 3h ago
Honestly I do wonder if they'll give him actual powers as part of his rework or just keep him as his currently is.

John Deadlock is actually a Korean immigrant
He was originally called Janggok Yo-han before it was changed at the immigration office.
