You picked this one. One week ago I ran a poll on what the next data-driven ranking should be, and Best Dolby Atmos demo scenes won. I then asked r/DolbyAtmosContent, r/hometheater, r/4kbluray and r/movies to drop their favorite scenes in the comments, and folded those in with everything else I could find.
The result: 48 sources analyzed (24 Reddit threads, 16 publications and blogs, 8 YouTube videos), 716 scene mentions, narrowed to 354 ranked scenes. The ranked unit is a specific scene, not a whole film, with a timestamp so you can cue it up fast.
Full 100 list with links to streaming and physical, and nicer UI:
Everything below #50 drops off fast: those scenes were named by far fewer sources, so the tail of the ranking gets noisy. The full 100 is on the site.
*A note on timestamps
The timestamps are gathered from the sources and from web searches, so some may be off. One is blank, because I could not verify it. If you know a missing timestamp, or you spot one that is wrong, drop it in the comments.
How I scored it
The ranked unit here is a specific scene (for example "Mad Max: Fury Road, opening chase"), not a whole film. Scenes that different sources named differently were merged so they aggregate as one.
AV publications and review sites (16 sources, tier-weighted) What Hi-Fi, Sound & Vision, Cineluxe, hifi.de, Audio Advice, KEF and others. Sources rated top / high / mid / low based on editorial track record and home-theater credibility. Top-tier carries 3x weight; low-tier carries 0.25x, and any source not yet assessed defaults to low. If the source was a ranked list, position matters: #1 gets a 1.5x bonus, tapering to 1.05x for last place.
YouTube videos (8 videos) Audio Advice, Chris At The Movies, Theater At Home, Theater Advice, Youthman, Yuri Brus, Genius Home Theater. Scored by engagement. Keeps smaller-channel picks in the mix without letting a viral video dominate.
Reddit threads (24 threads analyzed) Pulled from r/hometheater, r/4kbluray, r/sonos, r/movies, r/MovieSuggestions and r/DolbyAtmosContent. Each mention is upvote-weighted on a logarithmic curve, so a highly-upvoted comment counts more, but the curve is capped: no single hot comment can outweigh a top-tier publication.
Breadth beats hype Every scene's score is then multiplied by a breadth based on how many separate sources picked it. A scene picked across twenty different threads, articles and videos rises well above one that a single viral comment happened to mention.
Missing your pick? Or you think it should be higher?
This is based on what exists publicly. I am going to re-run the algorithm in some time with this thread's comments as a new source. If your favorite Atmos scene is not here, or is not where it should be, drop it below. Upvoted comments weight more.

Watching Incredibles 2 in a Dolby Cinema theater was what opened my eyes to the awesomeness of Dolby Atmos. It wasn’t any particular scene, however. It was the jazz score that played during the closing credits — it sounded absolutely amazing.
I watched some of those scenes to corroborate the timestamps, and some scenes, like the one from Sinners or The Power of The Dog were so great that I put these movies on my next up list
JP has Atmos on the newer 4k disc releases along with Dolby Vison. The Atmos mix is generally considered the better one, but its a matter of taste and no huge difference.
The Atmos and DTS:X mixes are different and the Atmos mix is generally considered the better one. It's not about which audio format is the better as they can be equal.
Here are some others I’ve heard are strong Atmos scenes. I haven’t confirmed them all.
007 No Time To Die - chase through Matera 300 - (38:00-45:00) arrow valley Doctor Sleep - atmospheric/effective throughout Dune 2 - Harkonnen outpost explosion and fight. Also first 10 min. The Hobit: An Unexpected Journey - (1:54) thunderous bass & great heights. The Matrix Revolutions - (1:39-1:41) dues ex machine scene Nobody - (1:12:00) final showdown Spiderman 3 - Harry attacks Peter on bike Thor Ragnarok - opening scene, (4:30) fight Twister - (ch. 10, 13, 19)
Thank you. It’s possible those were just suggested as good surround sound. These were just the extras I wrote down from a long list of which many were already included in OP’s post. I’ll go ahead and take them off my Atmos list.
He is not allergic to Atmos, but he is commited to 70mm IMAX film and mixes natively in IMAX, where he has chosen not to go the IMAX 12 channel route as opposed to the 6 channel choice. While the audio could of course be re-mixed for disc and streaming releases I guess Nolan prefers that his movies are unaltered from the cinema experience.
Yo, you have the code on GitHub, and it’s very easy to just change the parameters to make Reddit weigh more and produce alternative version of this ranking, or exclude some sources (because all sources are in the repo as well). I’m genuinely interested to see your version of the ranking, based on the same data. I didn’t want to make it 'Reddit ranking'. And I’m not just arguing. If you do that, please share it in this sub, that would be cool exercise!
Also, I wonder if it would make more sense to just put up a list of 50, not ranked, without score, just that 'these are the most mentioned' in multiple sources. But I think some people find value in the additional numbers
I agree that there is value brought by the ranking. Even though I personally don't agree with the order it provides a great insight into what scenes have been widely discussed as the best ones.
Exactly! Personally, if I was putting up a ranking myself, I’d order it differently too. Especially that I didn’t even watch all of the mentioned movies yet. I guess some who say what should be higher didn’t watch all these movies either.
What do you even mean by that people would have answered differently if they understood the metrics? Wouldnt you still list your favorite scenes in the same way?
Unless you are completely new to HelloAtmos, you would know that this is not the first time this type of list has been made and it has always been about compiling a list of what has generally been considered the best examples of Atmos to this day among the "community". A couple of Reddit posts will not have a large impact on that. It has never been an editorial list with the owner of the site's personal preference based on suggestions.
However, as with the Atmos music part of HelloAtmos, where you will find rankings based exclusively on visitor rankings alone, I assume that it is in the long term plans of the site to provide something similar for movies and movie scenes. There you will have the opportunity to have your suggestions move up the rankings.
Seen some comment somewere on Reddit, but why nobody talks about "2012". Whole movie is a timestamp of atmos, or LOTR fellowship of the ring - council gandalf mordor speach or moria whole scene with barlog.
LOTR scenes are on #73 and #82. If it was mentioned without a particular scene, it didn’t count towards this ranking. But it made #12, #26 and #27 in Best Dolby Atmos Movies ranking, see here:
Adding to my watch list. The idea of this list though is a specific timestamp. It probably did not show up in here because no particular scene was mentioned anywhere
Solid film if you have not seen it away, worth looking at the films from the first page of that list as its interesting to see how active the films are and the channels used, some bad films in there that have incredible mixes haha.
IMHO rank it by movie and then list significant scenes. Going by just best scenes expands the possibilities exponentially. Although the top ~10 scenes does carry weight too.
This a list of isolated scenes, and not the full movies. But unless you define great Atmos as high volume effects you would be surprised how good this movie sounds on a proper Atmos system..
