Art The family fortune was to be hidden somewhere in their massive estate. Unfortunately that same fortune was spent constructing such complicated traps.

Another trap map! This has become quite the series. I think traps make for great phased maps because they make the most of the sudden reveal that a map is more complex than just a combat! This one I wanted to do the classic shrinking arena but invert it so the outer ring is what gets smaller- ideally separating parties while they avoid the acid.

Advice/Help Needed first time DM

hello all, I'm a first time DM, I'll host my first session soon.

I have played DnD before but only as a player.

I have read the most important parts of the DM guide and I'm buying the monster manual soon, is it fair for me to ask the players to buy the players handbook? It's getting quite expensive and my budget is not huge as I'm starting an education soon.

I also wanted to ask, what are some good tips to make the first session good, I know I'm gonna fumble it somehow as itsy first time and I know my players and they know it's my first time too. But I still want to make the first session good, the first session will be the premade adventure in the DM guide, "the fouled stream". Thanks for advice in advance.

OC Fodder Inc #392: Fire and Giants [OC][ART]

Post image

Welcome to the team, little giant. We really hope your mom isn't waiting for you to come out of the dungeon, right? She will definitely not approve, and I don't think there is a bespectacled Coach to keep her calm, either. Also, For the record: Yes, I do just like saying his name. Welcome to Fodder Inc, a weekly web comic strip set in the For Profit Dungeon, Azmodendak's Halls of Madness, in a "5e" style world. Each week, we'll show you a little peek inside the halls, and what shenanigans are going on.

Advice/Help Needed Possibly planning on DM-ing a game with my friends in a couple months where should I start?

(🟩not really important stuff just some context🟩)

All most three years ago a friend group of mine wanted to do a DND game, but the guy who would was going to DM didn't know how so we essentially just dicked around for a couple of hours.

(🟥real stuff starts here🟥)

Anyway, I was thinking of actually doing my own campaign with this same friend group. However it should be important to note that basically these three friends of mine have no idea how to play (im just assuming the guy who was going to dm does not know but who knows. I should also note I have no idea what im doing either). So where should I start? What should I get and how should I plan this out? Any help would be appreciated.

Question Levelling tempo in official modules is kinda fast?

So I've never ran any official module in any of the roleplaying games I GM (or DM in this case). We've only started with Avernus in one of our campaigns out of curiosity, and I'm eyeing up the upcoming WarCraft expansion and I've noticed something.

The official modules seem to have a very rapid levelling tempo.

Is this something that's normal? I've heard that it's also a very "American" style, or rather school of roleplaying - to jump to the story beats pretty quickly in short, Marvel movie-like style, skipping the "extra trim".

In my group we seem to be more into long, heavily roleplayed campaigns with a lot of "slice of life adventure" scenes, lots of dialogues, etc., and I've heard from people that it's more "European" style of play (although I'm sure that it's just blanket terms and obviously there are people all over the world playing either way).

But getting to the point - I realised that many modules seem to throw level-ups at players after every encounter? And Avernus looks like one of the worst offenders, especially early on.

The modules look like they have about 6-10 main story beats and each ends up with a level up and can be reached within one or two sessions if played by the book.

Is it the intended way? Feels kinda weird character development-wise to just have the character beef up so significantly after every fight.

Or is it intended for the DMs to pad those modules out with encounters inbetween, having the players face off some additional challenges?

Just a disclaimer: I know that the answer is "do whatever you want", because as a DM, I know that I have the ultimate power to run things the way I want, but I just wanted to pique your minds about the phenomenon I noticed. Or maybe I am looking into a small sample that skews my perception.

No ill intent in this post, I also can see the merit in that for people that want to have the short-but-action-packed experience of what Vox Machina is like, constantly jumping to the next big encounter full of epic fights and levelling up to legends in a short span.

Advice/Help Needed How to build DM skills without a group

So I've been fortunate to have a couple of very brief intros to DnD in the last few years. But finding a group that was persistent in UK time has been a pain.

I don't really know much, certainly not enough to DM. But my kids are interested and I really want to DM for them. Where/how is the best way to learn, bearing in mind I'll need to strip back the experience for my kids ages 12-8.

I have the DM/Player and monster books, the heros of borderlands starter pack and even got hero quest for the extra models and maps. But they all seem a little too much for a first session. How do I build my skills as DM and make it easily accessible for them? I have the imagination and creativity part ok, it's the flow I will struggle with when introducing them to the various mechanics.

Suggestion I LOVE running folk horror in DnD

I genuinely love folk horror in DnD. Not the big monster jump scare stuff, the creepy village stuff. The villagers who are a little too friendly or The old lady who tells you to be home before the moon comes up and then just walks away. It gets under my players skin way more than any dragon ever did. I’ve been running The Crooked Moon and Curse of Strahd for a while now and honestly my favorite moments aren’t even the fights. It’s when the players go quiet. When someone says “wait... why are there no kids in this town” and then everyone start thinking the worse lol . That’s the good stuff. And you don’t even need a horror campaign for it. Drop one weird village into a normal fantasy game. Give it one rule nobody breaks and one thing nobody talks about. Your players will poke at it for three sessions straight.

Honestly I think a little bit of dread makes every campaign better.

Anyone else run horror? What’s the creepiest thing you’ve done to your players?

Question Looking for a specific dnd stream…

I saw a clip on TikTok of a dnd stream where the bard had an Auto tune petal or something under the table and when they casted something they sang a song. The specific scene I’m thinking of is I believe the bard healing someone and they start to sing “wild wild horses couldn’t ever drag you away”. It’s driving me nuts that I can’t find it. I believe it was an all women party if that helps

Question Why does Critical Role get so much hate from the DnD community?

I'm just now realizing that there is a good chunk of people who are apparently fans of Dungeons and Dragons that despise Critical Role and Matt Mercer. I think I can understand why the play style of CR is different from what some DnD players want when they play themselves, but I'm just trying to figure out why people think CR has "ruined" modern DnD.

I even saw someone complaining about people who make tiefling characters on a Critical Role hate post, and somehow that comment got >2000 likes. Do people just not like the narrative-heavy nature of the Critical Role play style? Do people like Matt and Brennan control player choice too much or something?
