How can you help provide humanitarian relief to people in Sudan? Where can you make donations online?

Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has created massive displacement, with an estimated 13 million people internally displaced and 4 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. The conflict has devastated infrastructure, disrupted food systems, and created widespread food insecurity and healthcare emergencies.

Many are arriving at remote border areas, where services to support them are under severe strain. Most of those displaced are women and children and other vulnerable people such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with medical conditions.

r/Ethiopia would like to encourage you to consider making a donation or otherwise supporting these organizations that are providing essential humanitarian relief in both Sudan and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any help:

Where to donate: https://www.rescue.org/eu/country/sudan

Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS)

Who are they: The Sudanese Red Crescent Society is Sudan's national humanitarian organization and part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. As a locally-rooted organization, they have access to areas that international organizations may struggle to reach.

What they do: The SRCS are focused on: - Providing first aid and emergency medical services to conflict-affected populations. - Distributing food parcels, hygiene kits, and emergency relief supplies to displaced families. - Operating ambulance services and supporting health facilities across Sudan. - Reunifying families separated by conflict through tracing services. - Delivering clean water and supporting sanitation infrastructure in displacement areas.

What are some organisations providing humanitarian relief to refugees in Ethiopia? How can you help? Where can you make donations online?

Conflict in the Tigray region is driving a rapid rise in humanitarian needs, including refugee movements internally and externally into neighbouring countries. Prior to the conflict, both the COVID-19 pandemic and the largest locust outbreak in decades, had already increased the number of people in need, creating widespread food insecurity.

With the above in mind, here are some organizations which provide humanitarian relief in both Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any support:

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)

Who are they:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

What they do:

Currently UNHCR are:

  • Working round-the-clock with authorities and partners in Sudan to provide vitally needed emergency shelter, food, potable water and health screening to the thousands of refugee women, children and men arriving from the Tigray region in search of protection.
  • Distributing relief items, including blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits. Information campaigns on COVID-19 prevention have started together with the distribution of soap and 50,000 face masks at border points.

Where to donate: https://donate.unhcr.org/int/ethiopia-emergency

Pls why are ppl romanticising this story😭

Post image
119 Upvotes

I don’t understand. People are treated this like it’s some Turkish series on Kana where the rich guy falls for the poor main character girl. I’m not hating on her for settling for this man,it’s her life and her choice but I don’t understand how people are calling this “romantic”. Prior to getting married, the girl was treated so poorly by the man’s mother. she then decided to leave and return to Ethiopia. the man decides to follow her to eth ,WITHOUT MENTIONING THIS TO HIS WIFE(YES,HE’S MARRIED) and goes on to marry the Ethiopian girl there . This is literally nothing more than cheating but ppl are brushing that aside and romanticising this. Don’t know if he was planing on making her a second wife or divorcing his first wife cause either way he’s in the wrong bc apparently in Islam he should’ve let her known and have her consent for the marriage to happen. If he was planing on divorcing her then that still doesn’t change the fact that he lied and cheated on her. mind you they both(the man and his first wife)already have a child so he handled this very poorly.
And then we also have the mother in law cussing tf out of this miskeen girl on livestreams.
Am I the only one who thinks that this girl deserved better? But I mean, she was also part of the cheating😬 this whole story is messy

Encyclopaedia Aethiopica (A–Z) — Free to Access and Browse

I got tired of opening each Encyclopaedia Aethiopica volume separately and constantly using Ctrl+F, so I added the entire encyclopaedia to my website, made it easier to browse, and added relevant images to some stuff etc.

These books are excellent reference material for Ethiopian and Eritrean history, and far better than most online sources for getting a basic understanding of historical figures, places and event etc.

Hopefully this helps someone out! Let me know if you come across any bugs.

Do government universities or the Ministry of Education issue original degree certificates after cost sharing is cleared?

• Upvotes

Help a friend here!

I graduated from a public university in 2021. After fully clearing my cost-sharing duties and returning my temporary certificate, the document I received in return is still labeled as a "Temporary Certificate of Graduation" rather than the actual original degree/diploma certificate.

  • Is the original degree certificate issued by the Ministry of Education or directly by the University Registrar?
  • Has anyone else received another temporary certificate after clearance? How long did it take to get your original diploma?

Is Ethiopia Worth Visiting in 2026–2027? Local Advice on Safety, Tours and Planning Your Trip 🇪🇹

Ethiopia is a country of extraordinary landscapes, ancient history, welcoming communities and experiences you won't find anywhere else. But if you're planning to visit in late 2026 or 2027, you probably have one important question:

Can you travel to Ethiopia safely, and does booking with a trusted local tour operator make a difference?

I'm an Ethiopian tour operator and professional guide with Simien Ethio Tours, a 100% locally owned Ethiopian tour company. I work from Gondar and specialize in the Simien Mountains and northern Ethiopia, with experience coordinating wider Ethiopian travel.

I want to share a practical perspective for anyone considering a visit.

1. Is Ethiopia safe to visit in 2026 or 2027?

The honest answer is that safety depends on the destination, the route, the timing and the security situation when you travel.

As of October 2026, official travel advisories identify serious risks in several Ethiopian regions. Amhara, Tigray and parts of Afar face significant restrictions and security concerns. Conditions can change quickly, affecting roads, domestic flights and access to popular tourist attractions.

That doesn't mean every destination in Ethiopia has identical conditions. It means travelers need to assess their intended itinerary carefully rather than treating the entire country as one destination.

For 2027, nobody can reliably predict today's security situation months in advance. Keep your plans flexible and reassess them before departure.

2. Why can a trusted local tour operator make a difference?

Ethiopia is not always a destination where you want to rely entirely on old blog posts, outdated itineraries or information from someone who visited several months ago.

An experienced local operator can help you:

Understand the practical differences between destinations and routes.

Coordinate guides, transport, accommodation and local logistics.

Check current access restrictions and transport arrangements before a trip.

Adapt an itinerary when conditions, weather or schedules change.

Understand local culture, customs and the places you're visiting.

Plan realistic alternatives instead of rushing through too many destinations.

At Simien Ethio Tours, we believe a good trip starts with honest planning, personal communication and realistic expectations—not simply selling a package.

Of course, no tour operator can guarantee your safety or remove the risks of armed conflict. Official travel advice still matters, and destinations subject to warnings against travel should not be treated as safe simply because a guided tour is available.

3. What if you want to visit the Simien Mountains and northern Ethiopia?

The Simien Mountains are famous for their dramatic escarpments, spectacular hiking, Gelada baboons and high-altitude landscapes. Gondar offers remarkable Ethiopian history, while Lalibela, Axum and Tigray have their own cultural and historical significance.

These are places many travelers dream of experiencing.

However, as a company based in Gondar, we take the current security situation seriously. Official advisories currently warn against travel to Amhara, including the area where Gondar and the Simien Mountains are located.

Before considering these destinations, check the latest official advice and confirm whether access, transport and local conditions have changed. We would rather help a traveler plan for an appropriate future date than encourage someone to take an unnecessary risk.

4. What about the Danakil Depression and other parts of Ethiopia?

The Danakil Depression, the Omo Valley, the Rift Valley, Ethiopia's historical sites and its wildlife destinations each require separate planning.

The right approach is to assess the precise itinerary, current regional advice, transport connections and any local restrictions. A destination being far from another region does not automatically mean it is safe.

If you are planning a multi-region journey, ask your operator to review the whole route—not just the highlights listed in the brochure.

5. How do you choose a reliable Ethiopian tour company?

Before paying a deposit, ask these questions:

Is the company locally owned and properly licensed?

Who will actually organize and lead the trip?

Can the company explain the route and its current operational limitations?

What happens if a destination becomes inaccessible?

Are cancellation, refund and itinerary-change terms clear?

Are the guides qualified, and are the arrangements appropriate for the activities?

Will the company communicate honestly if it recommends postponing part of the journey?

A good operator should be willing to discuss these questions openly.

6. Planning Ethiopia for 2027? Start with the right information.

If you're considering Ethiopia, begin by deciding what interests you most: mountain trekking, wildlife, history, archaeology, local culture or a broader journey across the country.

Then check the latest travel advice for those specific destinations and build a flexible itinerary around the conditions that actually exist when you plan to travel.

Simien Ethio Tours is a 100% locally owned Ethiopian tour company specializing in Simien Mountains trekking, private and small-group adventures, Gondar's heritage and northern Ethiopia, with wider trip-planning experience across the country.

We believe travelers deserve personal service, local knowledge and honest advice before they book.

Website: https://simienethiotours.com

If you're researching a future trip, you're welcome to ask general questions about Ethiopian destinations, trekking, local culture and itinerary planning. I'll gladly share what I can and be straightforward about the limitations.

What are you hoping to experience in Ethiopia in 2027? The Simien Mountains, historical sites, wildlife, the Danakil Depression or a longer journey through the country?

I'd be interested to hear what you're planning.

A lot of Ethiopians and Eritreans have distinct facial features that point them out as specifically from this part of the world. How does teff play a role in this from a genetic or evolutionary standpoint, as the world’s *only* teff eaters for many centuries (up until now)?

Question ❓ Seeking Advice and Cultural Understanding from the Ethiopian Community, Particularly the Amhara Community

I would appreciate some thoughtful advice from members of the Ethiopian community, particularly those familiar with Amhara culture and traditions. I am sharing this on behalf of someone who has approached me for advice, which I was unfortunately unable to provide.

The gentleman in question is a mature man, probably over 50, although he looks considerably younger. He was born in Ethiopia but grew up in the West, so he acknowledges that he may not fully understand the cultural expectations and social dynamics surrounding relationships in Ethiopia today.

During a recent visit to Ethiopia, outside Addis Ababa, he became acquainted with a young woman aged 23 who was renting a property belonging to him. They developed a friendship, which eventually became intimate. They spent time together over a period of approximately two months.

According to him, she was happy to spend time with him but repeatedly expressed her concern about becoming pregnant. On one occasion, she was worried enough to ask him to buy her emergency contraception. He later suggested using the withdrawal method instead, to avoid her having to take emergency contraceptive pills. Although she agreed, he acknowledges that she was not entirely comfortable with the arrangement.

He returned to the West in early September, and they have not been in contact since. The tenancy of the property she occupied had also expired, and he arranged for her to move out through his representative in Ethiopia.

Recently, she sent him a message informing him that she was pregnant. As far as he has told me, she has not made any demands of him.

He is currently undergoing cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, and is deeply concerned about becoming a father in his present circumstances. He is also worried about whether his treatment could have affected the pregnancy, although he has yet to establish the medical facts with his doctors.

He recalls that the young woman had previously told him that, should she become pregnant, abortion would be out of the question for her. She knows that he is unwell, but she does not know the full extent of his condition or that he has cancer.

Importantly, he accepts responsibility for his part in what has happened. He intends to apologise to her at the first opportunity, acknowledge that he should have taken her concerns about pregnancy more seriously, and explain his circumstances honestly. He has not yet done so because she has not been online since sending him the message.

His immediate concern is how to approach this situation sensitively, given that he does not wish to become a father under his current circumstances, while recognising that she may be determined to continue the pregnancy.

My questions to the community are these:

From an Amhara cultural perspective, what social, religious or personal considerations might influence a young woman's decision to continue a pregnancy despite the father's circumstances?

How are relationships of this nature, particularly those involving a significant age difference and a man who grew up abroad, generally viewed in contemporary Ethiopian society? I appreciate that attitudes vary considerably between individuals and communities.

What would be the most respectful and culturally sensitive way for him to approach her, apologise and explain his circumstances without making her feel pressured or judged?

Are there any cultural considerations he should be mindful of when communicating with her or, if appropriate, involving family members?

I am not posting this to condemn either party, make assumptions about the young woman's intentions, or suggest that she should be pressured into terminating the pregnancy. I am simply trying to understand the cultural context and find a constructive way forward for two people facing a difficult situation.

I would particularly welcome thoughtful, balanced responses from people familiar with Amhara traditions and contemporary Ethiopian life, rather than speculation or judgement.

Thank you for taking the time to read this extremely long msg and share your perspectives.

Question ❓ Addis ADHDers:- what is your current hyperfixation ?

Thumbnail
6 Upvotes

Obviously, there are medical sides to ADHD struggles, and others.

I am just highlighting the one that can easily get dismissed by 99.9% of the people around me: my hyperfixation.

I’ll start with mine:

As a medical person and a skeptic, I like to mix studies on gifted people to filter out scammers... I was obsessively reading and watching about psychics, mediums, channeling, NDers, reincarnation, remote viewing, and so on.

I ask around to see if there are any Ethiopians with similar gifts. So far, I have found a few (hearsay) in the Amhara region... who seem to have precognition abilities. Three NDErs in Addis ( my colleagues at work eventually told me ..) . The most part they see me as ነካ ያደረገው ሰው b/c I shake up some of their established belief systems and it makes them so uncomfortable.

Of course, I have a few neurodivergent diaspora & expat clients whom I share my new knowledge with and indulge a little bit more ... ....all these have helped me redefining my belief system .....It is so astonishing and freeing.

Anyone?

Am I crazy for wanting to drop out of a top private med school for a public government uni?

Hey guys, I’m in a massive dilemma and desperately need some real talk.
Right before college started, I was fully packed and registered for a large public government university. At the absolute last second, I got an acceptance call from a prestigious private medical school in the city. It felt like a rare opportunity I couldn't pass up—direct entry into medicine, amazing dorms, good food, and staying near my family and friends. My dad paid a huge non-refundable deposit, and I jumped in.
Flash forward to now: I absolutely hate it here. The campus is tiny (literally 40 students total) and it feels like a claustrophobic high school. There’s zero freedom, no campus life, and no fun activities. It's gotten so bad that sitting in class or trying to sleep at night, the only thing giving me hope is the thought of leaving for the government uni.
To make matters worse, this environment has made me realize I’m not even sure if I want to study medicine. My ultimate goal is to study abroad later anyway, so if I switch majors when I leave, these medical credits won't even transfer.
Logically, going to the public university gives me a huge campus, true independence, and room to figure out my actual passion—and the door to medicine is still open there if my head clears up. Plus, if it doesn't work out, I can always come back to a different private school later. But if I stay stuck here and fail because I'm miserable, my backup options are dead.
I know my family isn't actually supportive deep down, even though they say it's my choice. I feel sick with guilt over the lost deposit and terrified of disappointing my dad, but I am fully ready to pay him back in the future and stand on my own two feet. I just need a place where I actually have the drive to work hard and make them proud.
Has anyone else ditched a comfortable private college for a massive public university? Is the freedom and campus life worth trading away the luxury, especially if the goal is to go abroad later? Let me know your honest thoughts. Thanks!

Discussion 🗣 am looking friends

Hello, how are you all?

I’m a 21-year-old man living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. However, I spend most of my time alone. I really value self-respect and self-care, and I prefer being alone rather than being in crowded places or surrounding myself with people who don’t share my values.

The reason is that most of the people I know smoke, drink, get into fights, and constantly chase women. Almost every conversation they have revolves around women, and honestly, some of the things they say and do are quite disturbing. When I think about them, I feel like many of them have no clear goals or ambitions for their future.

What surprises me the most is how they spend almost 24 hours a day chasing women instead of focusing on improving themselves and building their futures.

When I see the people around me living this way, I often choose to stay alone because I prefer peace and personal growth over being surrounded by negative influences.

However, I would love to make some genuine, healthy friendships with people from any country, regardless of where they live.

I’m looking for positive, like-minded friends who value self-respect, personal growth, a healthy lifestyle, and having meaningful goals in life. Whether you are male or female, it doesn’t matter to me. In fact, I would be happy to have friends of both genders.

Thank you! ❤️🤝
