I've noticed something about Ethiopian families that I find genuinely hilarious. Apparently, simply existing isn't enough. You need to provide regular progress updates to your entire extended family.
You're 18? How are your grades? You graduate? Where's your job?You get a job? How much are they paying you? You start making decent money? When are you getting married? You get married? Where's the baby? You have a baby? When's the second one?
BRO CAN WE FINISH ONE MISSION BEFORE UNLOCKING THE NEXT ONE?
And the funniest part is how comfortable people are asking these questions in front of EVERYONE.You'll be sitting there peacefully some nice kitfo and shii and some auntie you haven't seen in 4 years will suddenly ask how much money you make.
No introduction. No warning.
Just straight into your financial statements while you're trying to enjoy your kitfo.
And God forbid you give an answer they don't approve of.
Suddenly the entire family becomes a panel of career advisors, financial consultants and marriage counselors. All offering completely unsolicited advice.
"You should start a business." "You should go abroad." "You should come back to Ethiopia." "You need to buy land."
Bro half these people can't even agree on where we're having the next family gathering but apparently they've figured out your entire future.
Now obviously I understand where some of this comes from. Ethiopian families tend to be close, people genuinely care about each other, and relatives want to see you doing well.
That's actually one of the things I appreciate about our culture.
But somewhere along the way we've confused caring about someone with being entitled to know absolutely everything about their life.
And sometimes those questions aren't as harmless as people think.
Someone might be struggling financially, dealing with unemployment, going through a difficult relationship or simply not interested in following the traditional timeline. Not everyone wants to explain their entire situation to 14 relatives over Sunday lunch.
I think we could all benefit from occasionally asking people whether they're HAPPY instead of immediately checking whether they've achieved the next milestone.
Anyway, I'm curious. Lemme hear the most ridiculously personal question an Ethiopian relative, neighbor or random family friend has asked you as if it was completely normal small talk
Because I KNOW some of you have stories.

Allow us to introduce you to the white 1956 (1948 E.C.) Cadillac ambulance currently on display at the Palace Museum.
Manufactured in the United States in 1956, this ambulance is fully equipped with medical instruments and is a historic vehicle that served the Imperial family at the former Jubilee Palace. The ambulance has been a part of several historic events, including:
• The 1960 (1953 E.C.) Coup Attempt: During the December unrest, when General Mengistu Neway and Germame Neway gathered high-ranking officials under the pretext that "the Empress is sick," they used this vehicle to escape when they realized the coup had failed.
• The Royal Family’s Relocation: It was used when the Empress relocated from the Jubilee Palace to the Genete Leul Palace due to failing health.
• Haile Selassie I University Handover: It provided transport services for the university's handover procedures.
• The Crown Prince’s Medical Journey: When the Crown Prince fell ill in Debre Zeit (Bishoftu), this historic vehicle provided transport to take him from Debre Zeit to Ethiopian Airlines for medical treatment in England.
Visit the Palace Museum and take a closer look at the owner of this remarkable history!

I got tired of opening each Encyclopaedia Aethiopica volume separately and constantly using Ctrl+F, so I added the entire encyclopaedia to my website, made it easier to browse, and added relevant images to some stuff etc.
These books are excellent reference material for Ethiopian and Eritrean history, and far better than most online sources for getting a basic understanding of historical figures, places and event etc.
Hopefully this helps someone out! Let me know if you come across any bugs.

What services does Ethiopia desperately need?
For those living in Ethiopia, what everyday problems do you face that you wish someone would solve?
Could be transportation, delivery, healthcare, online shopping, or anything else.
What services are missing or just suck right now?
Trying to understand real problems and potential business opportunities. Would love to hear your thoughts

Is there a REAL PRACTITIONER of traditional/polytheistic Ethiopian religion here? I ask everyone else not to intervene by rationalizing, just to ignore this post and move on. Please.
Here is the situation. I am writing from Italy and I truly know nothing about Ethiopia, its society, or its history.
Every now and then, I have dreams that are COMPLETELY different from ordinary dreams. They are rare, averaging a couple a year, though they are now intensifying a lot. These dreams are incredibly realistic and provide me with information that I do not know while awake. These dreams have also taken me back in time, causing me to utter phrases in ancient languages I have never studied. ALL the dreams I have are linked to the same female deity, who over time has assumed various names: Ishtar, Astarte, Tanit.
Now, a couple of nights ago, I dreamed that I was a black woman (the first time in my life dreaming of being a woman, the first time dreaming of being black). I lived with a very large extended family in a village, and I was the most important member, a sort of village chief. When a male guest arrived, I would sometimes sleep with them—a gesture that held a sacred value of hospitality and also brought money to my village. I saw in detail the large canopy or hut under which I lived. The forest in that area was lush. I believed in a goddess, who, however, did not reveal her name in the dream. In the dream, a word in the local language was communicated to me (a sort of inner voice), but I can no longer remember it. At that point, I was trying to understand where and when I was, and in response, I heard the name of Hailé Selassié.
I am so completely ignorant of Ethiopian history that, once awake, I had to look up who he was and when he lived. Based on this element, I hypothesized that the dream was set in Ethiopia in the early part of the 1900s or thereabouts. Is the contest of the dream realistic?
In a second part of the dream, I was a priestess of a goddess (once again a woman, even though I am a man!) and I carried a snake-shaped staff. Snakes were linked to my goddess and my power. I was running away from an older priestess because, although she believed in the goddess just like me, she was strict and used the snake's power to punish rather than to help. I went to live in the forest. Never dreamt before of snakes, but Tanit, Ishtar, etc. are related to snakes.
Now, when I woke up, I began to do research, regretting that I could not remember the word communicated to me in the dream at all, which I assume is important (those from previous dreams have been).
I browsed various websites and discovered that in Ethiopia, some people still worship a goddess called Atete, and that this goddess is historically linked to Astarte by a common origin according to some historians and anthropologists. Furthermore, Atete seems even closer to the ancient goddess than Astarte, to the point of still being an incorporeal solar deity. So, I started browsing websites and videos concerning Oromo culture, the Zar cult, saw videos of possessions, etc.
My problem arose the following night (the last one). I had ordinary dreams in which an intrusion occurred. In these dreams, I was myself and the situations were quite ordinary and improbable (like the dreams we all have), but at a certain point, a woman appeared—a witch who was hunting me down. Her goal was to steal a gold coin from me (gold = sun? coin = soul?), which I tried to guard jealously because it held great power. The presence felt different from the rest of the dream, more concrete and totally evil. She was not a dream creature. She was real. The coin was tied to my very being.
My question is: in traditional Ethiopian religion, are there witches or similar entities that attack people through dreams and try to steal something of spiritual value from them? And (most important) how do you counter them? Do Ethiopian priestesses have staffs, and do those staffs have any relation with snakes?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I know, I seem totally crazy. You'll be surprised to know that in my ordinary life I am a very rational man.

I don’t understand. People are treated this like it’s some Turkish series on Kana where the rich guy falls for the poor main character girl. I’m not hating on her for settling for this man,it’s her life and her choice but I don’t understand how people are calling this “romantic”. Prior to getting married, the girl was treated so poorly by the man’s mother. she then decided to leave and return to Ethiopia. the man decides to follow her to eth ,WITHOUT MENTIONING THIS TO HIS WIFE(YES,HE’S MARRIED) and goes on to marry the Ethiopian girl there . This is literally nothing more than cheating but ppl are brushing that aside and romanticising this. Don’t know if he was planing on making her a second wife or divorcing his first wife cause either way he’s in the wrong bc apparently in Islam he should’ve let her known and have her consent for the marriage to happen. If he was planing on divorcing her then that still doesn’t change the fact that he lied and cheated on her. mind you they both(the man and his first wife)already have a child so he handled this very poorly.
And then we also have the mother in law cussing tf out of this miskeen girl on livestreams.
Am I the only one who thinks that this girl deserved better? But I mean, she was also part of the cheating😬 this whole story is messy

Is Ethiopia Worth Visiting in 2026–2027? Local Advice on Safety, Tours and Planning Your Trip 🇪🇹
Ethiopia is a country of extraordinary landscapes, ancient history, welcoming communities and experiences you won't find anywhere else. But if you're planning to visit in late 2026 or 2027, you probably have one important question:
Can you travel to Ethiopia safely, and does booking with a trusted local tour operator make a difference?
I'm an Ethiopian tour operator and professional guide with Simien Ethio Tours, a 100% locally owned Ethiopian tour company. I work from Gondar and specialize in the Simien Mountains and northern Ethiopia, with experience coordinating wider Ethiopian travel.
I want to share a practical perspective for anyone considering a visit.
1. Is Ethiopia safe to visit in 2026 or 2027?
The honest answer is that safety depends on the destination, the route, the timing and the security situation when you travel.
As of October 2026, official travel advisories identify serious risks in several Ethiopian regions. Amhara, Tigray and parts of Afar face significant restrictions and security concerns. Conditions can change quickly, affecting roads, domestic flights and access to popular tourist attractions.
That doesn't mean every destination in Ethiopia has identical conditions. It means travelers need to assess their intended itinerary carefully rather than treating the entire country as one destination.
For 2027, nobody can reliably predict today's security situation months in advance. Keep your plans flexible and reassess them before departure.
2. Why can a trusted local tour operator make a difference?
Ethiopia is not always a destination where you want to rely entirely on old blog posts, outdated itineraries or information from someone who visited several months ago.
An experienced local operator can help you:
Understand the practical differences between destinations and routes.
Coordinate guides, transport, accommodation and local logistics.
Check current access restrictions and transport arrangements before a trip.
Adapt an itinerary when conditions, weather or schedules change.
Understand local culture, customs and the places you're visiting.
Plan realistic alternatives instead of rushing through too many destinations.
At Simien Ethio Tours, we believe a good trip starts with honest planning, personal communication and realistic expectations—not simply selling a package.
Of course, no tour operator can guarantee your safety or remove the risks of armed conflict. Official travel advice still matters, and destinations subject to warnings against travel should not be treated as safe simply because a guided tour is available.
3. What if you want to visit the Simien Mountains and northern Ethiopia?
The Simien Mountains are famous for their dramatic escarpments, spectacular hiking, Gelada baboons and high-altitude landscapes. Gondar offers remarkable Ethiopian history, while Lalibela, Axum and Tigray have their own cultural and historical significance.
These are places many travelers dream of experiencing.
However, as a company based in Gondar, we take the current security situation seriously. Official advisories currently warn against travel to Amhara, including the area where Gondar and the Simien Mountains are located.
Before considering these destinations, check the latest official advice and confirm whether access, transport and local conditions have changed. We would rather help a traveler plan for an appropriate future date than encourage someone to take an unnecessary risk.
4. What about the Danakil Depression and other parts of Ethiopia?
The Danakil Depression, the Omo Valley, the Rift Valley, Ethiopia's historical sites and its wildlife destinations each require separate planning.
The right approach is to assess the precise itinerary, current regional advice, transport connections and any local restrictions. A destination being far from another region does not automatically mean it is safe.
If you are planning a multi-region journey, ask your operator to review the whole route—not just the highlights listed in the brochure.
5. How do you choose a reliable Ethiopian tour company?
Before paying a deposit, ask these questions:
Is the company locally owned and properly licensed?
Who will actually organize and lead the trip?
Can the company explain the route and its current operational limitations?
What happens if a destination becomes inaccessible?
Are cancellation, refund and itinerary-change terms clear?
Are the guides qualified, and are the arrangements appropriate for the activities?
Will the company communicate honestly if it recommends postponing part of the journey?
A good operator should be willing to discuss these questions openly.
6. Planning Ethiopia for 2027? Start with the right information.
If you're considering Ethiopia, begin by deciding what interests you most: mountain trekking, wildlife, history, archaeology, local culture or a broader journey across the country.
Then check the latest travel advice for those specific destinations and build a flexible itinerary around the conditions that actually exist when you plan to travel.
Simien Ethio Tours is a 100% locally owned Ethiopian tour company specializing in Simien Mountains trekking, private and small-group adventures, Gondar's heritage and northern Ethiopia, with wider trip-planning experience across the country.
We believe travelers deserve personal service, local knowledge and honest advice before they book.
Website: https://simienethiotours.com
If you're researching a future trip, you're welcome to ask general questions about Ethiopian destinations, trekking, local culture and itinerary planning. I'll gladly share what I can and be straightforward about the limitations.
What are you hoping to experience in Ethiopia in 2027? The Simien Mountains, historical sites, wildlife, the Danakil Depression or a longer journey through the country?
I'd be interested to hear what you're planning.
