Failed Expectation Ordered Eggward got Bluedward
In their defence they said they don’t do buttercream and only marzipan. But the colour was supposed to match the print. The edible glitter was a personal touch
Edit: We were tight on time so we didn’t look for other bakeries that do buttercream and we were fine with a white cake with the print. It’s a very popular bakery here in Sweden actually and it was kinda strange that they don’t do buttercream but didn’t think much about it. The cake tasted amazing and we had a good laugh when we opened the box, my friend will definitely remember that birthday!

I know its not what you wanted, but omg this cake is hilarious and I like it better. I would remember this cake with fondness and hilarity for many birthdays to come.

I learned recently that “cottage bakeries” can’t use buttercream due to the laws around those types of places

u/Quirky_Word 4d ago
This was my thought. In CO it basically ruled out dairy products entirely (or really anything that had to be refrigerated).
That changed recently with the “Tamale Law;” I think both meat and dairy are allowed now.

We can make buttercream from crisco or sweetex/oasis. There are butter extracts and butter flavored crisco. Some states allow buttercream as well, mine does. As long as it's the American buttercream recipe. The sugar makes it so it doesn't spoil. But if you add milk instead of water then it should be refrigerated after a couple hours.

Isn't this like cakes 101? I would think if anything they wouldn't do marzipan/fondant....im so confused by this "bakery"

u/etched 4d ago
If I had to be super generous... really good piping skills is really hard to master. It takes a LOT of patience and practice to get things looking beautiful. With the rise of the "vintage" style cakes, this person probably just didn't have the patience to learn to make it look good.
What is easy though? Taking some fondant/marzipan, rolling it out, and using cookie cutters/plungers of MANY shapes to decorate with. It's basically like using stickers. And with marzipan you can make some 3d objects if you're good at playing with clay. Hell you can even just buy silicon molds and press the marzipan/fondant into it to get an even better 3d shape with less work

In Vietnam you would be hard pressed to find literally anyone who does butter cream tbh. It’s whipped cream or fondant
9
u/takanoflower 4d ago
Similarly whipped cream is main decoration in Japan too, buttercream is seen as old fashioned or retro now

Eggward
Edited to add: oh wait, that’s what they really wanted 😅. I think the second one looks more like an egg tbh - but it is really blue. I think it’s funny though

Kinda reminds me of the Mighty Boosh “I am the moon”

You can’t put an edible image over anything but white icing or the color underneath leaches through. Sincerely, a cake decorator.

I just don't understand how half the posts about cakes involve the buyer being tight on time, as if a birthday or other large celebration suddenly popped up at 48 hours notice. I'd be ordering the cake 2 weeks ahead of time.

Apart from the egg shaped face I prefer the one you got, the colour & design is more "Twilighty"

u/g0ldilungs 5d ago
Idk it’s literally not what was asked. They clearly wanted an egg shaped “Eggward” cake, not a weird moon witchy thing.
While what OP got is still on brand for the movies (kind of) with color scheme, it has a totally different vibe than what was asked for.
I’d be upset, you don’t need to like this OP! 😭😂

Oh I completely agree! I was just stating that his face being egg shaped was intentional.
24
u/Public_Noise8465 5d ago
It is supposed to be egg shaped.

u/Difficult-Post-3320 4d ago
The original cake is egg shaped but putting the egg face on the larger round cake looks weird.

The face on the second cake is egg shaped, but that gets a little lost in a round cake and the busy decoration.

The “expectation” probably tastes better but blue cake is such camp, I wouldn’t even be mad about it 😂

Is this a specialty bakery or something? Cause what normal bakery doesn’t do buttercream?

u/viendla 4d ago
Has this been posted here before? I’ve seen these exact images like three times.

Did they tell you in advance that they don't do buttercream? Seems like something important to mention when the request relies on buttercream

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 5d ago
I assume you didn't read the sentence under the picture.
14
u/TheFlyingMunkey 5d ago
I did, hence my question. It's not clear from OP if they told him before the order was placed or after
8
u/AppUnwrapper1 5d ago
Yeah if OP knew before placing the order I dunno why they still placed it.

u/SleepingWillows 4d ago
I feel like this bakery could’ve still pulled off an egg shaped cake with white marzipan, but instead they changed every aspect about the design (assuming OP asked for the first photo exactly)
-6
u/Fickle-Molasses-903 5d ago
The way OP wrote it nullifies the buttercream issue. Their concern was the color.

I actually prefer the one you got but I suppose if it wasn’t what you wanted then they did fail.

u/Andi_Lou_Who 5d ago
I like yours better. It matches the colour grading of the Twilight movies. It’s got that grey, rainy “Forks” look.

u/Itscatpicstime 5d ago
I’ve never seen Twilight and I still desperately need that Eggward cake before I die

So what was underneath the marzipan? I was a cake decorator for well over a decade and I have never heard of anyone not using some sort of frosting to coat the cake first before layering the marzipan or fondant.
Ps- hope your birthday was eggcellent. Hoahoahoa

u/Open_Macaroon_2659 4d ago
Omg this is fantastic. I know it's not what you asked for and not what you wanted, but I fcking love your cake. It's even more stupid and fun than the original. Love it.

This is hilarious 😂 I’m sorry OP. The moment they said they don’t do buttercream would’ve been the moment I looked for another bakery. Who doesn’t do buttercream?
