History/Origins:
The three main countries that developed the French Bulldog were England, France, and America. England banned the bullbaiting sport, so to save the bulldog breed, breeder bred a smaller and more suitable companion for people, thus giving us the English Bulldog known today. During the industrial revolution many craft shops shut down, which caused the workers to move to northern France. Popularity boomed and there became a steady trade of English Bulldogs into France. The French are the main developers of the look of the French Bulldog, the only thing America added on was the bat ears. Before America, French Bulldogs could have 2 different types of ears: rose or bat. When the French Bulldog was taken to America, the bat eared look was popularized and made the breed standard, and it gave us the French Bulldog known today.
Health Issues:
French Bulldogs are extremely unhealthy, so much so that some people even say their very existence is unethical; however, I would argue that with good ethical breeding (focused on the health and not looks) would drastically improve French Bulldogs life. For example, the references for my drawings (except the rose eared) was the dogs from the breeder BullsnRoses, a breeder who focuses on the health of their dogs. It would take me forever to list every health issue they have so here is a link to 23 most common health issues French Bulldogs have.
Coat Care:
French Bulldogs have a short, low maintenance coat. Even with their short coat, make sure to brush them weekly to remove dead hairs. They also need to be bathed every 6-8 weeks.
Costs:
The cost of a French Bulldog can get very complicated so here is an article that explains some of the costs and reasons behind the costs of French Bulldogs.
Behavior:
Known to be playful and affectionate, they love to snuggle on the couch with their owners. Their are called quite sassy and can be stubborn at times. They love to make friends of both the human and animal variety, they are also said to be great with kids.
Trainability:
French Bulldogs are known to be smart but stubborn. Often will they catch on to commands quickly, but often they will disobey. selective hearing many owners call it. They do have a good food drive and like to make their owners happy so their stubbornness is not a major issue in training.
Vocalization:
French Bulldogs arenāt know for barking but here is an article that goes further in depth about why they bark and what other sounds they make.
Energy Level:
They are know to have intense bursts of energy where they get zoomies and will need play, but due to their flat faces, they canāt properly exercise.
Exercise Requirements:
Not much is needed besides some playtime. In fact, it is advised to be careful with exercise due to the French Bulldogs difficulty breathing.
Nutrition:
Make sure to feed a high quality dog food and be carful with how much you feed. French Bulldogs are prone to obesity which is especially bad for the breed due to their already poor joints and top heavy structure.
Living Spaces:
They donāt need a big space, theyāll be fine with a couch to sleep on and a person to love.
A well bred French Bulldog is an AMAZING dog, there is a reason they are so popular, but with all the backyard breeding just makes them live such unhealthy lives. If you are going to get a French Bulldog, and donāt plan on rescuing, PLEASE do your research and go to an ethical one. Speaking of rescuing, I love to hear any rescue stories you want to share <3
If I got anything wrong missed anything please let me know! Otherwise I had more fun than I expected drawing them :)
(Sorry about the flair I didnāt know what to put)
