cambridge med work experience log

Hello! currently completing my work experience log for my Cambridge GEM application. How detailed is everyone going on their reflection? a few lines/ a paragraph?

Also- would non-healthcare experience be worth putting on there to discuss soft skills i can link to working as a doctor? Any advice appreciated!!

thank you!

Is it worth starting medicine at 30, and how might LLE funding work?

I’m based in England and trying to work out whether starting medicine around 30 would make sense for me, personally and financially.

I chose Biomedical Sciences partly to push back against my parents, who were pressuring me to study medicine. After graduating, I became a Biomedical Scientist. I later felt the progression options were narrower than I’d hoped, so I applied for the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in histopathology and was fortunate to get a place.

I’m now a Clinical Scientist in histopathology with an MSc in Clinical Sciences. Working closely with pathologists has made me genuinely interested in their work. I’m trying to work out whether medicine is a real fit for me or whether I’m idealising the role.

I’ve only started seriously reconsidering medicine because the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) is due to be introduced in 2027. I’m wondering whether it could make studying medicine as a second degree more financially possible.

I know the HSST route in histopathology has recently opened up, and consultant Clinical Scientist posts are available. However, the route to senior roles seems less straightforward, with fewer posts than in medical pathology. Is that a fair impression?

I’m considering whether to change direction, study medicine from 30, and eventually specialise in histopathology, possibly skin pathology. I already have around £90,000 in Plan 2 student loans, so I’d also like to understand how funding for a second degree might work under the LLE.

I’d appreciate honest perspectives from graduate-entry medical students, doctors who started around 30, and anyone else with relevant experience:

  • Did changing careers feel worth the time and financial trade-off compared with progressing in your previous career?
  • Is anyone else considering using the LLE to study medicine as a second degree? How are you interpreting the funding rules, and are you planning to apply when it becomes available?
  • For current medical students, junior doctors and recently appointed consultants: knowing what you know now, would you still choose medicine? Is it worth the training and financial commitment?

Warwick emails and multiple tasks to complete!

Hello.

For those of you applying to Warwick (or have better sense than I do), have you received multiple emails with multiple steps to complete? I am slightly clueless, overwhelmed and in need of a checklist to tick and check through before losing track.

Are we required to submit academic evidence first or complete the work experience checklist with references beforehand? 😰 Help!

Will the unis really only look at the highest valid results? Say you do an earlier sitting and get an average score (just meets threshold) then you sit it and in the later sitting you do even worse lol. Could unis look at both and be like “well they are clearly not improving” or do they not care as long as you’ve met the mark once?

so much good luck to anyone who’s applied this year !!! it’s like a weight’s off my shoulders and i can finally lock in on my UG.

just a reminder that getting to this point alone takes a lot of time practice & energy so i applaud everyone and anyone who’s been brave enough to sit the doomed ucat , write a ps , some of us even doing undergrad classes at the same time !!!

please don’t be afraid just because there are people here with 2590 and you think you’ll never get through because you will and people with ‘bad’ scores have got through before too <3

manifesting year 1 of GEM for all of us next year !!!!

(also pls use this as a discussion post to vent / share stats or what have you i’d love to have a little chat with other applicants)

Cambridge GEM additional reference

Hi!
I completed the graduate entry medicine form for Cambridge today and didn’t see any section relating to adding an additional referee. Then in the confirmation e-mail they sent a reminder for submitting an additional reference along with a link to a Qualtrics form. When I click the link however, I get taken to an error page that says ‘sorry this survey is not currently active’.

Has anyone been able to do this?

GEM with failed A-Levels?

Firstly, congrats to all who have just submitted applications !!! wishing you the best of luck !

I’m in my second year of Pharmaceutical Science and after really contemplating life i’ve decided that I want to apply next year for GEM, if possible.

I’m pretty sure i’ve checked the requirements for all GEM unis in the uk that i could be eligible for, and a lot of them state that they do not score A-Levels or they don’t consider them. My grades were DDU (bio, psych, chem) and I know that I have to add them to my ucas application, but i’m really worried that i’ll end up being rejected pre interview if they see it. I guess what i’m asking is, if the uni states they dont consider A levels, do they REALLY not, even if it’s a fail?

I don’t want to get my hopes up if it won’t be possible in the end, so any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated !!

Started Gem this year

Started GEM this year and I just can't see myself building a life here for the next 4 years. I'm late 20s and I was hoping I'd be able to thrive in this environment but this just isn't making too much sense to me. I have no savings, no girlfriend, no community and I just know I won't build it here. Has anyone else found themselves in a similar position?

Sat my UCAT yesterday, faced technical issues on TWO exams in one cycle, got 1900 B2 and don't know where to apply for GEM

Hi guys, I'm v lost on what to do and would appreciate ANY advice, especially if anyone has had a UCAT annotation before or knows how unis deal with them!

So on my first UCAT sitting on 23rd Sep, I had a technical issue in QR where my calc stopped working. My keyboard/num lock wouldn't work either, and there was a delay when I raised my hand for help and login issues from the staff. I reported it and Pearson confirmed that I lost 3+ mins. My case was referred to the Consortium office and I was offered a contingency resit ... yay!.......BUT-

...I sat my resit yesterday (14th October) and AGAIN had a technical issue, my calculator didn't even have numbers this time...!! it was just a blue blank square!. I lost around 40 seconds and then the interruption around 3 mins while staff were trying to log me back in/stop the test . It threw me off and I lost track of where I was in the questions. It definitely affected me during the test.

I got 1900 B2 this time....

It's so frustrating that I had another issue during the resit itself. I don't know if UCAT will give me an annotation for this one or if there's even anything else they can do now because I doubt I will get another resit...NOW....

I've been calling unis right after my exam yesterday because I need to decide on my four GEM choices and I'm getting nowhere with definite answers.... Chester said they wouldn't usually take anything under the mean, but then said they could consider it and that it might be worth applying since I'm close?....

Pears Cumbria said I was close to their previous contextual cutoff of 1910, but they didn't know how the cutoff would change this year or how an annotation would be taken....

Warwick said similar, they couldn't really tell me....much really...

Swansea had a minimum of 1900 last year but they don't know how it'll change this year.....

Worcester also couldn't give me a definite answer about annotations or what UCAT score would be competitive, but said it might be worth applying....

UEA said they don't know and don't have anything set in stone regarding the UCAT yet...they would look at it but they don't have a minimum UCAT points yet...

I haven't called Barts or Southampton yet. I feel like they'll probably tell me the same thing anyway, but idk....idk much about the

I have a 2:1 in Biomedical Science, GCSEs maths4 and eng5s (twas a tough time), BTEC DDM AppSci, so I'm also trying to make sure I only apply to GEM courses where I actually meet the academic requirements.

Can anyone help me out? Is it likely I'll get an annotation for the second incident, considering I was already given a resit because of the first one? and do unis acc take annotations into account? Everywhere I look online, people say they don't care about them, so I'm wondering if there's even any point hoping it'll make a difference.... ;;-;;;;

My top choice was Chester bur with 1900 B2, I'm not sure which universities to stick to and go for since they're all just saying the same things....

I even find it comical how my calculator didn't work TWICE now. Why are candidates losing time because of equipment issues in the first place 😭 come onnnnn... I think I just find it so ridiculous that I haven't had time to feel down yet

I know 1900 isn't an amazing score and I just genuinely don't know what the best decision is now

(Also, if anyone would be willing to have a quick peak at my personal statement for GEM, I'd really appreciate it...)

thinking of applying for GEM next year. . .

Hi All,

I'm currently a paramedic with a 1st class BSc(hons) in paramedic science and PGDip with distinction in Advanced Practice. A levels: B,B,C in biology, chemistry, business respectively. GCSEs A's in science and additional science, B's in maths and English. Wanting to apply to GEM next year.

Obviously I'm aware my degree, whilst a 1st with Hons, is not a life science/pure science, and my A-levels and GCSEs aren't amazing which limits my choice to unis that accept healthcare science degrees and put little/no weight on A-levels and GCSEs. So far I'm thinking Nottingham, Manchester, Southampton, and Swansea. Ideally Nots or Manc would be the preference due to where we currently live but, of cause, beggars can't be choosers.

Do you think my uni choices are realistic? I have some good extra curricular activities for the CV with sports and 2 charities that I've volunteered at for some time, and plan to spend the next 12mths blitzing UCAT prep/practice. Other than that, is there any other things I can be doing to maximise my application??

Appreciate any replies :)
