Mod Announcement Rule updates re: recent flood of doom-posting

hi folks —

we're following up on this post from a couple days ago essentially flagging the uptick of doom/gloom posts in the sub. we've been getting modmail about exactly this for a while now, and we've decided to make some minor tweaks to the rules in response.

we agree that the "is ai going to replace us" / "the industry is dying" / "is a degree worth it anymore" cycle has gotten repetitive enough that it's actively making the sub a worse place to spend time. we all know the market is trash, but frankly the answers haven't changed much since the last fifty iterations of those threads.

what's changing: we're expanding rule 5 to more explicitly cover this category. posts that fall into the doomer-question bucket — ai taking jobs, the market being terrible, should i leave the field, i've applied to 900 jobs, is design dead — without bringing anything new/nuanced to the discussion will be removed. if you see posts like this that get through our automod filters, please report them.

what's still completely welcome:

  • portfolio reviews and feedback requests — this is one of the main purposes of the sub and nothing about that is changing. any specific questions tied to your actual situation ( e.g. "i'm 6 months into a job search in [x market], here's what i've tried, what am i missing?") will be allowed as long as you're also attaching your portfolio/CV for specific feedback.
  • industry discussion bringing real data, news, or a genuinely new angle
  • vent posts (like this one) within reason, when something new/nuanced needs to be said. caveat here that we will be more closely monitoring the Vent tag to filter doomposting with a heavier hand.

the job market is rough right now. we know — we feel it too. our mod team is made up of freelancers and contractors and seasoned educators, and we're all navigating the same thing in a very very weird time for the industry. but the same three questions on loop have become tiresome and unproductive, and they're crowding out other more relevant/interesting content.

more than happy to hear feedback on this in the comments.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Brand identity for a Dutch construction and carpentry company

FEEDBACK please :)

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a brand identity for one of my best friends, who’s starting his own construction and carpentry business in the Netherlands. I’d love some feedback before I finalize it.

About the name

The logo reads “Van de Bovenkamp – Bouw & Timmerwerken”.

  • Van de Bovenkamp is his surname (a typical Dutch family name).
  • Bouw & Timmerwerken means “Construction & Woodwork / Carpentry”.

He specifically wanted his surname in the logo, since as a one-man business his name is the brand.

The monogram

The “B” monogram comes from two things: the B of Bovenkamp and the B of Bouw (construction). The box has one slanted side and one straight side. That contrast is deliberate, so it can be used as a recurring graphic element across the rest of the identity.

The identity

Besides the logo, I’ve developed the full visual identity. I’ll be handling everything for him: website design and launch, print materials, social media, and so on. That’s why the mockups show those applications, since that’s where the identity really comes to life.

Hope to see some feedback! Thanks.

Discussion Design that looks like something else

I walked by this display in Macy's today, and I honestly thought it was boxes of macaroni and spaghetti. While the boxes are smaller than pasta packages, nothing about this design says "men's skin care" to me. Just me? Maybe I was just hungry?

I can’t tell if it’s just me but it looks literally 3D on my screen. Anyone know how they did this? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before!

Discussion Thoughts on detailed logos?

just out of sheer curiosity, what do you guys think about logos with a lot of details/texture, etc? at some point i got it in my head that a logo needs to be easily scalable or able to be used in different mediums like embroidery (i learned this the hard way with my first logo that had brush strokes.) if you are making a detailed logo are you making two versions - one detailed, one simplified? what is the general consensus on this?

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Feedback and advice on my project

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’d appreciate some feedback on my branding project, ÁGORA.

ÁGORA is a space that brings different experiences together in one place, combining coworking, a café, a bar, and a studio. Conceived as a third place between work and home, it aims to balance productivity, creativity, connection, and leisure.

The visual identity translates this concept through a dynamic, modular system that adapts to the different areas of the space.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the overall identity, especially the logo and how well it communicates the concept. Does the visual system feel cohesive, and is there anything you think could be improved?

You can check out the full project here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/255060909/AGORA-Brand-Identity

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Swiss style poster - which one do you prefer?

I tried designing swiss style poster which I might use as room decoration. I just can’t decide between the two versions before I send the design to printing service. So I would greatly appreciate to know people’s opinion on which one is more visually appealing.

Any potential advice is welcome as well!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Is this logo working on its own and within this context?

Post image
• Upvotes

Do I need to thicken the latin text for recognition or anything?

Context: high-end/mid luxe brand Hawa (and in arabic) with a serpent head in the logo. Bold, breaking barriers, curiosity brings transformation. not supposed to be an inherently middle eastern brand, but global and approachable to the western consumer also.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Feedback? What do you think of the concept for my personal brand logo?

There's not much more to it than that; it's a MA. I'm redesigning it because I had one before, but it was too sharp and edgy and didn't represent me. With the new one, I'm aiming for a calmer and more informal image but without overdoing it

Edit: Bro, I'm a designer :'), I hadn't noticed the resemblance to binoculars, I guess I have to start over. Perhaps I didn't explain myself well because of the translator; it's my personal brand, a graphic design business.

Inspiration NESTLÉ QUIK SPOOK GROUP - SKIP WILLIAMSON - 1974

This was a very unlikely pairing, Nestlé, which is one of the most genuinely profits before people corporations hiring underground comix legend Skip Williamson to illustrate their Spook Group packaging for Quik, to give the kiddies something to look at while they drink their chocolate milk. Skip must have gotten a gig with some ad agency, because he left a trail of commercial work in the seventies that didn’t fit in with his comix pieces & the usual suspects of radical papers & record covers. x SEAN

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Poster design — looking for feedback

Hi everyone!
This is my third poster, part of my attempt to teach myself graphic design. I’m currently exploring posters, album artwork, and illustration, with a focus on understanding visual communication, how to translate ideas, feelings, and information into something visual.

For this piece, I created a fictional contemporary movement performance called Between States, experimenting with typography, transparency, and composition to suggest movement and stillness.

I don’t have a formal background in design, so I’m mostly learning through experimentation, trial and error, and figuring things out as I go.

I’d really appreciate any constructive criticism, especially regarding composition, hierarchy, typography, or anything I might be overlooking. I’d love to know what I could improve or keep in mind for future projects!

Career Advice How to negotiate salary when working for a UK-based company

I recently connected with an art director who is hiring for a mid level graphic designer. The company is UK-based and they told me they were looking for a US-based designer (they often travel to the US for video and photo production) to join the team.

The art director told me to send them my info as well as desired compensation, but I’m unsure on how to approach this. I know that compensation for UK designers differs from US quite a bit, and for context in my last job I was making 80,000 USD in a HCOL area as a mid level designer. Should I give a number range and also say I’m open to negotiate? Not sure how to approach this strategically!

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Logo Refresh - Feeback

Thumbnail

Hello friends. I'm looking for some general feedback on the logo I'm creating for a private school.

Some background: They're looking to refresh their current logo. I won't go into too much detail about what's wrong with it. Flip over to the second photo, and I'll let y'all form your own opinion on that. But long story short, their logo needs an update haha.

Here's the brief:

Problem: The existing logo is antiquated and too visually complex in its messaging.

Objective: Create a logo that is easily reproducible, simple, and responsive across various media. If possible, please consider the school's mission and values.

Brand Personality: Safe, fun, exciting, accepting, inclusive, energetic, unlimited potential, intentional, hands-on, eager, enthusiastic, innovative, and adventurous.

Style Preferences: Minimalist, Clean, Versatile

I presented a few logo options, and they're leaning towards this design. Their original logo uses the Delicate Arch as its symbol, so I wanted to keep that but simplify it. For the typeface, I decided to go with a serif to give it a more academic and premium feel.

Thoughts on the overall design? What's working/not working? Any advice on how I can tighten up the logo lockup - i.e., tracking, leading, alignment between elements, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

I have to commute an hour by train and made this illustration + the graphic design. I did have a reference for the posture of the character. I used to do illustrator explainer style work a lot as a freelancer, but now being a teacher I enjoy making these just for the fun of it. The line art with a minimal set of colours and using basic shapes always appeals to me. It is an easy way of creating fun graphics.

Discussion those who were bad at long-form design (reports, flyers etc), how did you get better?

im also at a new point in my career where im starting to work with more jr designers (more as just a secondary reviewer, not art director level yet), and im struggling to figure out how to support them with things like reports, documents, and flyers. some of it is just my inexperience giving feedback in a work environment in general, and i know some of it will just take time, but i also know it's been discussed as a general weak point in a lot of student portfolios, so i figure someone has dealt with this.

like, do i send them optimal line-length articles? do i leave 300 comments on every margin that's off in their document? do i just consider it not my business and let it slide? lol in all seriousness i will most likely also ask the CD i work under for advice, but i was curious about other people's experiences and what they've found genuinely helpful, as i've honestly never had that much trouble with typesetting past, say, typography 1 or 2 during college.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) I made a dithering tool you might find useful!

I made this to solve some 3D printing problems that i kept running into, but it works for vectors and videos too. Thought some folks in here might appreciate it / find it helpful.

https://warlock.tech/

Why did i make it?
1. Dithering photos is impossible in slicer tools
2. I needed the print as stepped layers instead of one layer of many colors

Once I built the 3D exports the other file types were easy to support so I figured I'd offer those too.

Gallery shows just some of what it can do. If there is more interest I'd be happy to share more!

Portfolio/CV Review Junior Designer here, can I get some portfolio feedback?

Built my portfolio as a Behance Post. I have no idea if that's okay or if anybody's even going to bother clicking on it, or if it's better to build a web page. I also have no clue if the work exhibited here is good enough to get myself hired. Any tips?

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) CrispPop! 🥔 (Fictional Potato Chips Brand)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been on a mission to try and design colourful food/snack packaging because i feel like so much of branding today is boring and simple.

It stared with FizzPop a fictional soda pop brand i created to test out if i could make readable flavours just from the designs of the cans themselves. (I recently made a post about FizzPop to this subreddit if you wanna see it check my profile)

But ever since i made the first designs for FizzPop i knew i wanted to do chip bags too cause they fall into a similar “junk food” category in my mind. and so I designed a few of the most iconic potato chip flavours (at least in terms of western flavours). And when coming up with what logo to put on the bags I thought it would be fun to make “CrispPop” as if the company that makes FizzPop also has a line of chips too, as if they’re just off branches of one conglomerate company. (Like pepsico & fritolay)

But enough rambling. You’ve seen my designs lmk what you think I’m always very open to constructive feedback. Graphic design is very fun for me i don’t do it professionally in any sense but i’m always trying to improve. 🤍

Asking Question (Rule 4) Which of these 4 foot designs looks best? Or would you suggest a 5th option?

It’s been challenging trying to get the eagle’s talons to look right. I’ve been tweaking the design for a while, trying to find a solution that feels natural and fits the overall logo. I generally avoid Ai but was curious in how it would solve this geometric problem. Option A is what ChatGPT came up with, even after multiple attempts at prompting it to create geometric talons that complement the rest of the design.

All other options are hand drawn and created in illustrator.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Feedback? What do you think of my Instagram carousel design?

Post image

The copy was given in a brief, so I'm only looking for feedback on the design. I used a black, orange, olive and beige palette with metallic 3D objects (AI-generated) to tie the 5 slides together. Mainly wondering about hierarchy and readability on mobile. Be blunt!
