Announcements Regarding "Lanterns" and the Subreddit Rules

I feel a need to remind so many of you that rule #1 of this subreddit is simply entitled "CIVILITY." If you liked Lanterns or not, insulting others over a difference of opinion isn't a right. It's a privilege. And many of you so-called fans are being downright insulting to people who happen to have a different opinion than yours. I don't care if you liked Lanterns or didn't like it. If you're going to disagree, do so with CIVILITY. This is neither gatekeeping nor toxicity, it is an appeal to civility. Behave yourselves. It's possible to disagree without being insulting.

EDIT: Alright, I misspoke about one thing - the difference between rights and privileges. Yes, I got that wrong on a technical level... but the way some of these people behave, it's an abuse of a right. Freedom of speech is not freedom to be an irresponsible jackass. There's still a social contract. And insults are still a violation of the very first rule of this sub.

I'm loving the great pr that lanterns tv show has done for the corps. People used to look at me me crazy when I said that green lantern comics are some of my favorite. The infamous hal clip of him getting beat up by henchmen was used everywhere to troll his fans.

Hopefully aqua man gets some good representation on the big screen as well.

Discussion Expanded & Revised list of Lantern Related Objects

A while ago a did a compilation of various Green Lantern related items that grant Lantern powers or Lantern-like powers.

After checking comments and doing a TON more research, I have come up with a revised and expanded list of Lantern gear, or way a person could get lantern powers.

To my knowledge, these are MOST of the ways a person could attain lantern power or lantern like powers.

There are a tiny handful of one-off lanterns with no names that are not listed here, like the fractal lanterns of Jealously, Envy, Disgust and Sorrow. (Sorrow is listed because it has a named user)

Hal follows Sinestro to Qward for a big confrontation.

Writer: Denny O'Neil

Pencils: Joe Staton

Inks: Frank McLaughlin

Colours: Adrienne Roy

Letters: Milt Snapinn

Cover: Dick Giordano & Tatjana Wood

"Death Quest To Qward" - Hal returns to Ferris Air to his old job along with Tom who has taken up his own old position after his gas station chain has gone under. Before their work day starts, the pair meet by the portal to Qward outside Coast City. After laying some traps and an alarm system tied to the ring. After heading to the airfield, Hal has enough time to suit and meet Carol when his ring alert goes off. He heads to the portal and finds Sinestro has emerged. They begin a battle but Hal springs his traps. Smoke bombs go off and Hal pushes Sinestro directly woth a green beam but the yellow ring is unaffected by the green so it flies off Sinestro's hand. Sinestro escapes into the portal back to Qward, but Hal charges his ring before going on a chase. In that time, a boy passes by and enters the portal.

After charging up, Hal goes after Sinestro. But finds Qward in a state of blizzard. He passes a convoy of Weaponers but swings around them to the nearest city. After dealing with a Weaponer standing guard, he finds Sinestro inside speaking with another Weaponer. This Weaponer is making a new ring for Sinestro that is supposed to be more powerful. Before Hal can make a move, that same boy sees him and shouts out "Green Lantern". Knowing he's lost the element of surprise, Hal jumps out and attacks. He takes down the Weaponer by force and lunges at Sinestro but he gas his new ring on. After shooting a string yellow blast at Hal, he misses, but Hal tried to protect the kid instead and they then try to escape. The exit is sealed shut and Hal's ring won't work inside this building due to a yellow energy field. Sinestro finds them and almost defeats Hal but Hal resorts to fists and brute force. After knocking Sinestro down, he and the boy find a way out and return to Earth. However, Hal finds another blizzard state when he remembers hearing the Weaponer with Sinestro talk about an invasion and how the blizzard on Qward is a test by a General Fabrikant. Hal then realizes the convoy he passed by was the invasion force.

Conclusion: The return to Qward was interesting to say the least. This kid, Fabian feels like he'll be a bigger deal than they're letting on. I wonder what he's about and why he was out in the middle of nowhere.

Hal able to get Sinestro's ring off so easily is surprising. It's a wonder he never tried it before. Though it did leave Sinestro with a stronger ring to counter Hal's stronger ring. I'm looking forward to what else his new yellow ring can do.

As for Tom, did they really need to take away his gas stations? He made a name for himself and grew beyond "sidekick" status. They've essentially brought Hal and Tom back to where they were in issue #1. This regression in character development is disappointing and I hope it's to make way for something bigger.

Finally, this invasion of the Weaponers to Earth. That's gotta be huge, right? Like multiple heroes huge? I can't imagine that'll be left to Hal alone, despite what he would say about it. This promises to be lots of fun.

Discussion Sinestro: Dead or Alive?

Post image

Been reading through 90’s Green Lantern starting with Emerald Twilight and I noticed that Sinestro’s death is given some ambiguity despite the broken neck. His body is never seen again when Oa is revisited during “Emerald Fallout” in GG: Warrior and Green Lantern #0 despite Kilowog’s skeleton showing up in both. And in his profile for Green Lantern: Secret Files, Hal is described as “seemingly ending his defiance forever.” I wonder if Marz had any specific idea for Sinestro or if he was just keeping the door open for the next writer to do something with it.

Discussion Should I watch it?

So I am a huge Green Lantern fan, Im reading the comics watching the animated series, yada yada, but I recently watched Lanterns with my grandma and we both really enjoyed it but she doesn’t like animated movies so I can’t really watch the other stuff with her. Now here is where I gotta ask, do I bite the bullet and watch the green lantern 2011 movie with my grandma, I’ve seen it, I know it sucks but maybe just maybe it will get her to watch the animated stuff and be more interested in my boy green lantern. so should I or no?

Comics How would rank all these green Lantern lore books I finished fully this year(besides 1960) worst to best

Green Lantern 1960 by Julius Schwartz : It's fun but really outdated until Danny O neil comes. Flat villains flat characters the powers make no sense he is OP but at the same time underpowered the characters don't have much more than there one thing overexpostion even by that point standards. 2/10 sadly enjoyment 5.5 to a 6.

Red Lanterns new 52: by Peter Milligan.

7 to 7.5enjoyment 8/10 like a lot of the new 52 it started off strong but has way too many crossovers and ditches some stuff like Lady Belise and her parental issues being fleshed out or Atrocious having red flags and was going to end up bad even without the Manhunters which Killing Joke did better since we seen Joker's red flags even before the events happened like him lashing out his pregnant wife and reckless cashing of a comedy career. Still really fun has a soild ending

GL Secret origins/Files: Short intro of No Fear 2005 and does a great job getting you to know Hal unique origin and his parents dynamics nothing big but I would recommend this for a newcomer. 8/10

Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Danny O neil: Pretty Long

8 to 8.5/10 for both Hard and space traveling heroes

Finished the first 7 issues of 1960 first before moving more randomly like the guardians backstory guy gardner intro Star Sapphire comic a Black Hand comic Alan scott crossovers. So I'm not expert but I think I understand enough of it's prequel. I like the friendship the art style and despite no subtly it does it's social commentary well in HTV when it's not using Hal as a punching bag and exploring it's characters on screen but some feel a bit underdeveloped mainly the villains mainly there message

issues with at the start is sometimes they push Hal as a bootlicker when even here it's clear that's not true he already went to another planet to help out and sometimes it goes back on his development for example in John's introduction he has to do same lesson again of authority not always good it's not as bad as Lanterns as Green Arrow issues are acknowledged at times and he is given more respect. I think out of 7 issues of hard traveling heroes the ones I really deserved the award winning was the first half of issue 1 and the Speedy as a drug addict it wasn't as ham fisted lessons the villains were more fleshed out and the characters flaws were more believable than just needing to make Hal get shit on for Oliver and John. I could be wrong I don't get why John was picked by the Guardians they want people who can follow orders and John clearly doesn't fit that role maybe if it showed Ganthent making a push to get more people like Hal as they owe him for banishing him to a wrong planet

Despite being a John Stewart fan I don't like his debut it takes the worst of the problems in HTV. Well for one it doesn't make sense as to how he got picked by Guardians as even here like in Issue 1 3 and 4 there made to critique powerful yet old out of touch people who refuse to see and try anything then what they know which isn't much when it comes to the struggles of the average person let alone the oppressed even sending Gathent to a shithole planet they never bothered to check up on for saving Hal jordan's life but breaking there rules and nerfing Hal Jordan's powers which could end his life.

I don't see why they would pick someone who openly will argue back with anybody regardless of authority they aren't shown to regret or even try to change like how GAS first half had them confronted with there mistakes and the vulnerability other must have felt when the Manhunters massacred most of the forgotten zone and how trying to bury created the Red Lanterns. There change or attempt it makes sense. Where as here nothing happens maybe if it was shown or explained when they learned about the prison planet or Ganthent or Hal Jordan pushed and/or guilt tripped them to pick someone like John. There is also repeating Hal Jordan's arc and using him as a punching bag. This was only done in the second half of issue 1 where he suggests leaving the guys not because they could be lying or something but because it's not there property as I recall even though as early as 1960 Issue 2 Hal Jordan has already went to planet and even Inuit tribe to investigate issues because people were in danger not just his friend.

The first half does a critique of social issues using Hal without needing to turn him into a different person with what about the black skins Hal often focuses on more dangerous world theartning missions probably because of his thrill seeking and judges pretty quickly that he didn't pay attention to the living conditions of people and has him exposing what's the point of saving the world from alien invasions and monsters if you're not going to address the poverty bigotry and more as Serum lake perfectly put it and has him called out and guided on his issues by the old man without excusing or babying him understanding his usual style isn't going to help and has him exposing the Landlord.

With here the politician is so blantly racist his plan with the fake bullets makes little sense as imagine if GL didn't stop them in them how is he going to explain no gun wounds or if the cops or GL checked it etc at least the landlord pretended to be a nice guy until exposed and sent grunts to kill GA. Hal already learned there is nothing wrong with humiliating men like this and goes back to being a authority bootlicker to make John cooler.

Sometimes there is not enough work to get me to care like Gretta I haven't spent enough time with her like trying to connect with the kids only to be manipulated and abused by chef who took her in and exploited so unlike someone like Ace in the DCAU I don't even think about her. Similar issue with Hal Jordan fighting an imaginary version of himself his own self loathing yeah we know he is hard on himself and others but in that chapter his life was in a lot of control he was with Carol and has a stable job why is his self loathing as big. That he has to fight a version of himself to save himself does he blame himself for Sinestro escaping again or thinks Carol only likes him for Green Lantern. It doesn't get focused on as much.

Also how Carol was dating Hal Jordan I didn't like how they started dating once he revalved himself in HTV it just makes it feel unearned and out of character because he wanted Carol to like him for him and not green lantern pretty reasonable since she shows little interest in Hal. Green arrow relationship with Black Canary is way more fun and fleshed out. Wish it got it's adult swim show.

Emerald Dawn Pt 1 and 2 by Christopher priest. 10/10 Solid villains art and story all around nothing feels like it needed more time to say what it wanted to say closest thing it gets to a sequel is JLA year only issue is the yellow thing really makes no sense why it was good idea as it should make it too easy to kill Lanterns.

Question Can Lanterns make non-construct substances through chemical reactions?

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question (and quite frankly pointless, just indulge my curiosity) but I was wondering whether or not, for example, a Lantern were to create table salt/sodium chloride (NaOH + HCl) through the experiment rather than simply creating the salt itself, would the salt be a construct or would it be the real thing? Same with how water is created, real water or construct water?

Discussion Green Lantern x Pokémon Crossover: Hal Jordan, The First Green Lantern Of The Earth.

Post image
29 Upvotes

Finally, we can talk about the absolute protagonist of the Green Lantern series. Hal Jordan is too important a character to be left out, so let’s dive right in. For his hypothetical team, I’ve chosen to include Flygon and Tropius, which represent Hal Jordan’s time as a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft. Yanmega is another Pokémon linked to Hal’s past in the military. Roserade serves as an alter ego,
much like how Hal keeps his identity as a Green Lantern hidden from everyone in his private life, as the Pokémon itself is inspired by a superhero archetype. Gallade fits this concept even better; with its psychic powers, it can manifest blades and swords to strike opponents, much like how the Power Ring is used against Green Lantern’s enemies. Eevee represents the periods when Hal frequently switches rings, much like how Eevee’s various evolutions take on different forms. Cobalion reflects his leadership skills, as it serves as the leader of the Swords of Justice in the Unova region. Rayquaza, his ace, is the perfect Pokémon for someone like Hal, given that his primary objective as a Green Lantern is to bring balance to the entire universe.
When you really think about it, all these Pokémon, much like the Power Ring, are capable of creating things: Eevee can conjure comets; Flygon can unleash powerful blasts at its foes; Roserade can fire projectiles made of plant matter; Cobalion can manifest a massive sword from the horn on its head; Yanmega can generate high-speed gusts of wind; Tropius can produce small yet potent blades; Gallade can forge weapons out of psychic energy; and Rayquaza can manifest an avatar of itself through the move Draco Meteor
