Green Lantern 1960 by Julius Schwartz : It's fun but really outdated until Danny O neil comes. Flat villains flat characters the powers make no sense he is OP but at the same time underpowered the characters don't have much more than there one thing overexpostion even by that point standards. 2/10 sadly enjoyment 5.5 to a 6.
Red Lanterns new 52: by Peter Milligan.
7 to 7.5enjoyment 8/10 like a lot of the new 52 it started off strong but has way too many crossovers and ditches some stuff like Lady Belise and her parental issues being fleshed out or Atrocious having red flags and was going to end up bad even without the Manhunters which Killing Joke did better since we seen Joker's red flags even before the events happened like him lashing out his pregnant wife and reckless cashing of a comedy career. Still really fun has a soild ending
GL Secret origins/Files: Short intro of No Fear 2005 and does a great job getting you to know Hal unique origin and his parents dynamics nothing big but I would recommend this for a newcomer. 8/10
Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Danny O neil: Pretty Long
8 to 8.5/10 for both Hard and space traveling heroes
Finished the first 7 issues of 1960 first before moving more randomly like the guardians backstory guy gardner intro Star Sapphire comic a Black Hand comic Alan scott crossovers. So I'm not expert but I think I understand enough of it's prequel. I like the friendship the art style and despite no subtly it does it's social commentary well in HTV when it's not using Hal as a punching bag and exploring it's characters on screen but some feel a bit underdeveloped mainly the villains mainly there message
issues with at the start is sometimes they push Hal as a bootlicker when even here it's clear that's not true he already went to another planet to help out and sometimes it goes back on his development for example in John's introduction he has to do same lesson again of authority not always good it's not as bad as Lanterns as Green Arrow issues are acknowledged at times and he is given more respect. I think out of 7 issues of hard traveling heroes the ones I really deserved the award winning was the first half of issue 1 and the Speedy as a drug addict it wasn't as ham fisted lessons the villains were more fleshed out and the characters flaws were more believable than just needing to make Hal get shit on for Oliver and John. I could be wrong I don't get why John was picked by the Guardians they want people who can follow orders and John clearly doesn't fit that role maybe if it showed Ganthent making a push to get more people like Hal as they owe him for banishing him to a wrong planet
Despite being a John Stewart fan I don't like his debut it takes the worst of the problems in HTV. Well for one it doesn't make sense as to how he got picked by Guardians as even here like in Issue 1 3 and 4 there made to critique powerful yet old out of touch people who refuse to see and try anything then what they know which isn't much when it comes to the struggles of the average person let alone the oppressed even sending Gathent to a shithole planet they never bothered to check up on for saving Hal jordan's life but breaking there rules and nerfing Hal Jordan's powers which could end his life.
I don't see why they would pick someone who openly will argue back with anybody regardless of authority they aren't shown to regret or even try to change like how GAS first half had them confronted with there mistakes and the vulnerability other must have felt when the Manhunters massacred most of the forgotten zone and how trying to bury created the Red Lanterns. There change or attempt it makes sense. Where as here nothing happens maybe if it was shown or explained when they learned about the prison planet or Ganthent or Hal Jordan pushed and/or guilt tripped them to pick someone like John. There is also repeating Hal Jordan's arc and using him as a punching bag. This was only done in the second half of issue 1 where he suggests leaving the guys not because they could be lying or something but because it's not there property as I recall even though as early as 1960 Issue 2 Hal Jordan has already went to planet and even Inuit tribe to investigate issues because people were in danger not just his friend.
The first half does a critique of social issues using Hal without needing to turn him into a different person with what about the black skins Hal often focuses on more dangerous world theartning missions probably because of his thrill seeking and judges pretty quickly that he didn't pay attention to the living conditions of people and has him exposing what's the point of saving the world from alien invasions and monsters if you're not going to address the poverty bigotry and more as Serum lake perfectly put it and has him called out and guided on his issues by the old man without excusing or babying him understanding his usual style isn't going to help and has him exposing the Landlord.
With here the politician is so blantly racist his plan with the fake bullets makes little sense as imagine if GL didn't stop them in them how is he going to explain no gun wounds or if the cops or GL checked it etc at least the landlord pretended to be a nice guy until exposed and sent grunts to kill GA. Hal already learned there is nothing wrong with humiliating men like this and goes back to being a authority bootlicker to make John cooler.
Sometimes there is not enough work to get me to care like Gretta I haven't spent enough time with her like trying to connect with the kids only to be manipulated and abused by chef who took her in and exploited so unlike someone like Ace in the DCAU I don't even think about her. Similar issue with Hal Jordan fighting an imaginary version of himself his own self loathing yeah we know he is hard on himself and others but in that chapter his life was in a lot of control he was with Carol and has a stable job why is his self loathing as big. That he has to fight a version of himself to save himself does he blame himself for Sinestro escaping again or thinks Carol only likes him for Green Lantern. It doesn't get focused on as much.
Also how Carol was dating Hal Jordan I didn't like how they started dating once he revalved himself in HTV it just makes it feel unearned and out of character because he wanted Carol to like him for him and not green lantern pretty reasonable since she shows little interest in Hal. Green arrow relationship with Black Canary is way more fun and fleshed out. Wish it got it's adult swim show.
Emerald Dawn Pt 1 and 2 by Christopher priest. 10/10 Solid villains art and story all around nothing feels like it needed more time to say what it wanted to say closest thing it gets to a sequel is JLA year only issue is the yellow thing really makes no sense why it was good idea as it should make it too easy to kill Lanterns.
