Discussion Is Hogwarts Legacy the Best Harry Potter Game?
First and foremost, I want to get one thing out of the way: I'm not a Harry Potter fan. I haven't even watched the movies, and it's been a long time since I read any of J.K. Rowling's novels. However, when I watched the trailer for Hogwarts Legacy, I was captivated by what I saw. I decided to give Avalanche Software's game a chance with a fresh pair of eyes, and I'm glad I did. Set in the 1800s, the game puts you in the role of a fifth-year student at Hogwarts, where sinister events are unfolding. The story is pretty good, and Professor Fig serves as an important ally throughout the journey.
One of the game's biggest strengths is its world design. Avalanche Software has done a phenomenal job recreating Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade, and the surrounding Scottish Highlands. From talking portraits and wandering poltergeists to students practicing magic and magical creatures roaming the countryside, there's always something happening around you. Attending classes such as Potions, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts also helps bring the experience to life. There's a tremendous amount of content, including side quests, challenges, magical beasts, puzzles, and activities to discover. The customization options are pretty good, too, although the limited voice choices are disappointing. It's unfortunate that Quidditch isn't included, considering how important it is to the Wizarding World.
Combat is another major highlight. Having played some of the older Harry Potter games on PS2 and the original Xbox, I found the combat in Hogwarts Legacy much more satisfying. There are numerous spells to learn, and combining them with combat plants, potions, and different abilities makes encounters enjoyable. The talent system and equipment upgrades give you additional ways to improve your character, while broomstick flying makes exploring the world a lot of fun. The game also looks gorgeous, with detailed character models, impressive lighting, magical effects, and vibrant environments. The voice acting is solid, and the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. The main campaign takes around 40 hours, with plenty of additional content if you want to spend more time exploring.
Unfortunately, Hogwarts Legacy isn't without its problems. I encountered some strange animations, occasionally got stuck in objects, and had one instance where I couldn't access the menu and had to restart the game. Loading indicators when opening certain doors also became noticeable later on. My biggest frustration, however, was inventory management. Early in the game, inventory space is limited, forcing you to sell or destroy unwanted equipment. Completing Merlin Trials eventually helps expand your capacity, but I would have preferred a storage system for gear. I also found the mission boundaries frustrating on occasion, since leaving an area for too long can cause you to fail the mission. These issues are irritating, but they never overshadowed the overall experience.
Ultimately, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hogwarts Legacy. The story is good, the world is beautifully crafted, the combat is fun, and there's a satisfying amount of content without everything feeling unnecessarily padded. The ability to attend classes, learn spells, explore Hogwarts, and discover the surrounding countryside makes this feel like a genuine Wizarding World adventure. Despite its flaws, I think Avalanche Software has created an outstanding Harry Potter game that deserves recognition. I'd recommend it to both fans of the franchise and people like me who aren't particularly interested in Harry Potter.
