Hi everyone!
I'm hoping the Reddit community, especially boxing historians, collectors, and longtime boxing fans, might be able to help me uncover some of my late father's history.
My father was John Balla (May 15, 1938 – January 22, 2011), a professional boxer who fought from 1958 to 1975.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photographs of my father from his boxing career. I'm trying to piece together his life, preserve his accomplishments, and hopefully find photographs, videos, newspaper articles, fight programs, or even personal stories from people who knew him.
I would be incredibly grateful for anything anyone might be able to share.
What I Know About My Father
- Name: John Balla (possibly appeared as Johnny Balla)
- Born: May 15, 1938, in California
- Died: January 22, 2011
- Associated hometowns: San Francisco and Stockton, California
- Professional boxing career: 1958–1975
- Division: Primarily light heavyweight
- Professional record: Approximately 25 fights; historical databases differ slightly on his exact record
- Amateur boxing: Reportedly won the 1957 California Golden Gloves championship at 165 pounds
- Other connections: He also spent time in New Orleans, Louisiana, during his boxing career.
Two Major Boxing Events He Participated In
- Muhammad Ali vs. Buster Mathis — November 17, 1971
Location: Houston Astrodome, Houston, Texas
My father fought Roy Wallace on the undercard of this event, which was headlined by Muhammad Ali and Buster Mathis.
I'm especially interested in finding the original event program, promotional photographs, footage of the preliminary fights, newspaper coverage, or any photographs of my father from this event.
- Joe Frazier vs. Terry Daniels — January 15, 1972
Location: Rivergate Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana
My father fought Walter White in a scheduled six-round bout on the undercard of Joe Frazier's heavyweight championship defense against Terry Daniels.
Available boxing records indicate that my father defeated White by knockout.
I recently found an image of the original fight program, which lists:
JOHN BALLA — New Orleans, Louisiana vs. WALTER WHITE — Tampa, Florida
Seeing my father's name printed on an actual heavyweight championship program was incredibly meaningful to me.
I'm attaching that image to this post.
Other Known Fights
I'm also hoping to locate information about these recorded bouts:
- March 1960 — Ocie Salmon, Richmond, California
- February 10, 1972 — Harold Glaspy, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
- June 20, 1972 — Bill Hardney, Baltimore, Maryland
- April 21, 1975 — Ernie Smith, Dallas, Texas
- May 20, 1975 — Clarence Morris, Orlando, Florida
- June 24, 1975 — Boyd Edwards, Orlando, Florida
- July 8, 1975 — Bobby Walker, Orlando, Florida
His recorded professional debut was May 8, 1958.
What I'm Hoping to Find
Photographs: Boxing portraits, weigh-in photographs, training pictures, Golden Gloves photos, newspaper photographs, promotional images, or candid pictures of him outside the ring.
Videos and recordings: Any footage of his fights, undercard broadcasts, news coverage, training sessions, or interviews. Even a few seconds of footage would mean the world to me.
Original boxing memorabilia: Fight programs, posters, tickets, promotional materials, newspaper advertisements, boxing magazines, scorecards, or anything listing John Balla.
Newspaper coverage: Articles about his Golden Gloves championship, fight announcements, results, interviews, or stories about his boxing career in California, Louisiana, Texas, Maryland, or Florida.
Personal stories: This is especially important to me. Did anyone know John Balla personally? Did he train at your gym, work with a family member, or spend time in your community? Do you remember seeing him fight?
I'd love to hear anything about the person he was outside the ring, too.
A Few Questions for Boxing Historians and Collectors
- Does anyone have access to photographs or archived records from the 1957 California Golden Gloves championships?
- Are complete undercard recordings known to exist for the 1971 Ali–Mathis or 1972 Frazier–Daniels events?
- Were professional fighters commonly photographed for boxing programs during this period, and where might those portraits be archived?
- Does anyone collect original fight programs from the Houston Astrodome or Rivergate Auditorium?
- Are there boxing photographers, promoters, trainers, or journalists from this era whose collections might still exist?
- Does anyone remember John Balla fighting in Stockton, San Francisco, New Orleans, or elsewhere?
- Are there boxing archives or private collectors who specialize in lesser-known professional fighters from the 1950s–1970s?
- Can anyone help verify his 1957 Golden Gloves championship or reconcile the conflicting professional records?
Why This Matters to Me
My father passed away in 2011, and I have been trying to learn more about his life and boxing career.
It's difficult knowing that he competed during such an extraordinary era of boxing, including on events featuring Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, yet I have so little visual history of him.
I'm not looking for anything valuable in a monetary sense. I'm hoping to recover pieces of my father's life that I can preserve for myself, my family, and future generations.
Even one photograph of him would be priceless to me.
If you have anything, remember anything, or know someone who might, please comment or DM me.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for helping me keep my father's story alive.
I have searched for photographs, videos, boxing programs, newspaper articles, and historical records of my late father, John Balla (1938–2011), who was a professional boxer from 1958 to 1975.
So far, I've researched his BoxRec boxing record, Ancestry family records, historical newspaper references, and information about two major events where he competed:
- November 17, 1971: Muhammad Ali vs. Buster Mathis, Houston Astrodome. My father fought Roy Wallace on the undercard.
- January 15, 1972: Joe Frazier vs. Terry Daniels, Rivergate Auditorium, New Orleans. My father fought Walter White on the undercard and reportedly won by knockout.
I've also found an image of the original 1972 fight program listing my father's name, but I have not found an actual photograph or video of him.
He reportedly won the 1957 California Golden Gloves championship at 165 pounds.
I'm hoping someone might have photographs, original fight programs, archived footage, newspaper clippings, or personal memories of him. I'm particularly interested in anything from California, New Orleans, Houston, or his Golden Gloves years.
Any leads to historical archives, collectors, or people who knew him would mean so much to my family.
