Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Teleglitch [PC][2012-2015] Pixel game about using guns and magic vs. dungeon monsters.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Shooter, ala, Hotline Miami.

Estimated year of release: 2015. At the absolute earliest, 2012

Graphics/art style: Pixelated 8bit, Bird's Eye View, Attached pic is exactly what I remember when I try to remember what it felt like to play.

Notable characters: I'm not sure if there was a story, but you controlled a character similar to those in Hotline Miami, just a head with swaying shoulders.

Notable gameplay mechanics: Shooting guns, using magic against "dungeon" enemies I.E. Skeletons, Goblins, Slimes. Basic enemies were pixel renders, but bosses looked if they were low poly 3D instead of pixel art. The map was large and obscured by fog of war.

Other details: I can confidently say that time frame because my brother got it from Steam by checking on the "Featured" slot. Sadly the account he used got hacked in 2018 and unfriended everyone so I can't check his game inventory, I'm not sure there's any way to check friend history either, so 2018 could be seen as a hard cut point of this game's release.

A very simple way I can describe it is a mix between Noita and Hotline Miami. The enviroments and magic looked extremely similar as they do in Noita, with muted greens and browns. Magic attacks were pixel particles that could fill the entire screen. Gameplay was very similar as Hotline Miami, going into rooms and shooting all enemies to advance, with choices of weapons dropped from dead enemies.

What I'm most mixed right now is that I'm not sure if everything was magic, since there were clear gun sounds, or if everything was guns, even when you could cast lighting bolts and rays of light. So I'm going with the idea it as a mixed gun and magic game.

What's it not:

Hotline Miami and Noita, despite feeling super similar.

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, This game feels extremely similar graphics wise but there's no dungeon enemies or a lot of combat.

Nuclear Throne, I also played this at the time so I know it was a different game.

Enter the Gungeon, Too new and enemies looked like standard RPG enemies instead of bullets.

Realm of the Mad God, and other online games. This PC had to use a crappy Wi-Fi dongle so it was offline most of the time.

Every single game on PC Gaming Wiki's "Bird's Eye View" category I thought it would find it there, but no. I know for an absolute fact that was the game's camera though, we played it for hours back in the day. I'm being serious when I say I checked all 3700 games both on that category and the "Top-down view" selection, so if you have a suggestion, Ctrl+F and check if it's there, leave the suggestion if it isn't.

This game was on the Featured PC Games slot of Steam for at least a while so it was well liked and reviewed or sold pretty decently, so I wanna believe it can be found, also the PC Gaming Wiki is not all-encompassing and lags behind games before 2015, for example it has Monaco 2 but not Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine.

[Mobile Game] [2016-2018?] Dinosaur Game

Post image
9 Upvotes

There was this game I used to play when I was roughly 6-7, and it was kinda one of those talking Tom knockoff games. There was this orange Dinosaur with a bright red mouth and green eyes, and you took care of it. I think there was a feature where you could explore the very small map and collect some sort of mushrooms or flowers, but it was poorly engineered. There might have been other Dinosaur choices, but I don't really remember. I very vaguely remember this feature where you could paint the Dinosaur, and I remember painting mine as Pikachu a lot lol. If anyone has any idea what this game might be, please reach out!

Niche: A Genetics Survival Game [PC] [2017-2019] A game similar to ClanGen

Post image
11 Upvotes

If you've ever played clan gen it was much like that, however it was less about living through a creature and more of looking after the creatures stats, i remember they were more wolf/dog looking and they could get sick and have mutations, they also were 100% definitely all sat on individual hexagonal pillar type things

[PC/Probably Mac] [Late90s-2007?] Edutainment Game

Platform(s): It was a pc game, but it might have been a hybrid CD.

Genre: edutainment game for kids.

Graphics/art style: animated videogame.

When I was a kid there was a game that was played in the computers of my school, but also in the houses of some of my friends. It was a game to teach math to kids, it was in spanish since that is my native language but i don't know if that's the original language.

I believe the name was "El Circo de los Numeros" or something similar, since the hub was a circus or carnival where you access the activities. I remember that there were two character called "la nutria impar y la nutria par (even otter and odd otter)" but i can't remember what was the point of that particular game.

[Windows 95][~2000] Shareware vertical shmup. If you lost the demo, an image of a big skull appeared

• Upvotes

Platform(s): Demo playable on windows

Genre: vertical shmup

Estimated year of release: likely pre 2000?

Graphics/art style: Pixel art

Notable characters: multiple ships to pick from at the start with different abilities

Notable gameplay mechanics: each ship had different weapons. One weapon fired out a column of circles, possibly green.

Other details: I don’t think it was space themed as I remember you flew over a big green field for one of the levels. Another one you flew over a big industrial setting of factory, or possibly you were inside it.

Main feature is that I had the demo of this game, it was shareware, and if you died (or beat the demo?) the screen changed to a static image that possibly had text to buy the full game, that was displayed on a background of a scary giant human skull (not looking straight on at the camera, looking slightly off to the side).

[PC][2010s] Old 2D flash puzzle game in which we escape the protagonist's nightmare?

So, this might be a hard find as I don't think this game was popular at all but I had it on a CD with multiple games that I got gifted as a child...

Certain details:- Looked like a flash game with almost hand drawn art style and very detailed and realistic looking characters, the game had a lot of puzzles to solve and some gave keys to open doors that led to further levels. The protagonist was a little chubby chef girl with specs, who wore an apron and the whole game had a central theme of cooking... The premise of the game as far as I remember was that the girl was having a nightmare and we had to help her escape it by solving puzzles.. One thing I clearly remember is that on one of the levels we got a spatula as an item (not sure if it could be used as a weapon) which I remember coz I literally learned that word from the game since I was so young

Uncertain details:- The protagonist maybe wore a chef's hat too... Unsure if the game actually was horror but it definitely felt eerie to me as a child because of the uncannily detailed art style... The protagonist also had curly hair, possibly brown but unsure.. another thing is that I sort of remember the word 'nightmare' being in the title but I'm definitely not sure abt it.

If anyone has the slightest idea what it could be pls let me know I'll be very grateful🙏🏽❤️

Wetware [PC][HORROR/SCIFI][2020s?] Text-based horror-scifi game where you play as a hacker trying to access a ship's system while your crew is on board only to find out there's some weird phenomena involving meat and human-machine interfacing.

I've been DYING to find this game, I watched a video essay about it some time ago and it's been haunting my brain as of late. The game is entirely text based as far as I know, with the malicious entity talking to you through red text.

[PC][2006-2013] A Freeware/or Flash Game

Graphics/Art Style: Bright, lighthearted, and highly cartoony like ms paint or crayon drawings.

Notable Characters:

- A teenage kid (the protagonist you play as).

- An evil scientist character

Intro/Plot: The game opens with the teenager trying to find or go get pimple/acne cream, I think to a gas station. Suddenly, it cuts to an evil scientist and makes a specific villainous remark about why you should "never underestimate your enemies," and launches a barrage of missiles that devastate the area/planet.

Gameplay After the missile strike, it becomes a traditional point-and-click puzzle adventure. I remember a beach and taking a fishing net to solve a puzzle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Been searching for over a decade and I know it exists.

[Roblox] [after 2019 - before 2023] likely a myth game

im looking for this game. i suspect it is myth game based on its style. idr how i found it exactly. and im not sure if anyone will find it. but im going to try anyway. from what i know abt the game. the game had a mugen or myth style to the game. the game had a latin title. the game starts off outsidewith walls aorund. generally a large and obscure baseplate you get to a building after walking a great distance that looks loke some sort of castle. the inside is green iirc. to continue you have to get thru this, experimental obsactle course notably you have to get on a textured ball and the floor is icy (the floor is also icy matieral). you have to roll on the ball and avoid obsactles. i think its know be difficult bc its something you have to do quickly to get across. i think there is other obsactles or puzzles but idr what they are

world war zero iron storm [PC][early 2000s]Looking for an old FPS similar to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Operation Thunderstorm

Looking for an old FPS similar to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Operation Thunderstorm

I'm trying to find an old PC first-person shooter that I remember playing years ago.

I'm looking for games similar to *Return to Castle Wolfenstein* and *Operation Thunderstor, especially in terms of graphics, gameplay, and level design.

**What I remember about the game:**

* It was an older PC FPS, probably from the 2000s.

* Most of the missions took place indoors, inside dark military buildings, underground bunkers, and narrow corridors.

* It had a dark, gritty military atmosphere.

* You fought normal human enemies, mainly soldiers. No zombies, monsters, or supernatural elements.

* The gameplay was straightforward, with guns and linear, mission-based levels.

* The graphics and overall feel were similar to *Return to Castle Wolfenstein* or *Operation Thunderstorm*.

Does anyone know of any obscure or lesser-known PC shooters that fit this description?

Virtual Town [Kindle fire 7][2019] Game where you rebuild a broken town

The description I'm gonna give will be really bad but I remember playing this game when I was younger and only had a Kindle fire, it's a game where you make your character and you become the mayor of a run down town. There's a cinema where you watch an advert to gain an article of clothing. You can adopt a child, but I remember the adoption lady only came at like 7am or something like that. You could build new parts of the town but it would take hours for it to be done. You had a net to catch bugs and they'd go into a collection. The houses themselves were only a room. It was a 3d game, I should mention. There was a part of the town covered in thorns that you could only access after so long playing the game. That's all I can really remember. Thank you to anyone who can help me find out the game.

[PC][1980s to 2000s] Can't remember old educational game

• Upvotes

So like in the earlier 2000s my dad came back with a computer game. It was like an educational game about Japan and/or Chinaas well as teaching about the country's culture and geography.

I remember there were two characters.

A blonde boy in a blue karate or ninja costume and a brunette girl in pink. Finishing tests would let the girl character learn magic or an martial arts move? It had a chibi/cartoon like art style.

I don't k ow when the game was made.

[PC][2000–2017] 2D platformer with a yellow animal character and pirate-like enemies

I'm trying to find a game I used to play on my computer when I was younger. I can't remember its name, but I still remember several details about it.

- Gameplay: It was a 2D side-scrolling platform game, similar to Mario, Fireboy and Watergirl, or Red Ball. However, the graphics were definitely NOT pixelated. The animations were smooth, and the graphics looked polished for an older game.

- Release date: I'm not sure when it was released. It might have come out sometime between 2000 and 2017. The game was installed on my PC, and I think I launched it through an ".exe" file inside its folder.

- Main character: The character wasn't human. It was a yellow or yellow-orange animal that walked on two legs and had a tail. I think it might have looked like a lion, but it could also have been a cat, a jackal, or another animal. I'm not completely sure what species it was.

- Attacks: The character could extend its hand and shoot a fireball or some kind of projectile. However, I couldn't use this ability constantly. It seemed to have a limited duration or some kind of usage restriction.

- Enemies (the most distinctive detail): The enemies were also animal-like creatures, not humans. They were furry and looked somewhat like lions or jackals. I think all the enemies were the same type of creature. They carried swords or similar objects that reminded me of pirates.

- Enemy behavior: The enemies patrolled back and forth across platforms. As soon as they noticed me, they would make a small jump and run straight toward me. I vaguely remember them making a sound like “Rar!” when they spotted me.

- Setting: The game started in a forest, and most of the gameplay seemed to take place in forest environments. The scenery had earthy, sandy, and brown colors. There were high platforms and places you could climb. There might also have been a mechanic where you could jump from branch to branch, but I'm not certain.

- Difficulty: The game was quite difficult, and the character died easily. I don't remember there being a visible counter showing how many lives or how much health I had left.

The main things I'm trying to identify: An old PC platform game with smooth, non-pixelated 2D animations, a yellow-orange animal protagonist, forest levels, and furry, sword-wielding animal enemies that make a “rar!” sound and charge directly at the player when they spot them.

If anyone recognizes this game, remembers playing something similar, or can suggest games with screenshots I could compare, I'd really appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance!!

[PC][Circa 2012] Old horror game Markiplier played around 2012/2013

• Upvotes

Hi, looking for game I remember Markiplier playing years ago. You were in this maze, and you could go forward, backward or side to side as normal, but you could also drop through the floor and continue playing that way. Hiwever doing this could cause you to become trapped with nowhere to go. I vaguely remember it might have been cel-shaded or possibly having a pixel art style.

[Android/Maby IOS?] [2013-???] Game like battle cats in ancient China where you deploy old Chinese legends

• Upvotes

This is gonna sound very obscure but there was this game I used to play when I was around 5-6 and it was a game like battle cats where you deploy old Chinese legends and they fought for you. It was a 3d game on a 2D perspective. I remember there being archers you can buy and you had to protect your shrine. I don't remember the teams being color coded. The characters looked like chibi humans with big heads and their eyes glowed like a yellow tint and didn't have pupils. The games background had like a sunset with a giant sun in the middle and you picked your characters you wanted in a PVZ style. The characters are in little boxes and you can deploy them.

Honestly I don't even know if it was Chinese culture related but I swear I remember Chinese culture stuff being in there. I'll draw a photo in a bit I'm at work right now though

[PC][2010s] weird and disturbing flashgame about a rabbit I saw on Friv

I remember that back in the 2010s, I used to play Flash games on Friv a lot, like most kids during that time. I have this weird, almost surreal recollection of encountering a rather disturbing game on the site. I remember randomly clicking on the top-right corner of Friv, which brought me to a game featuring a cartoon white rabbit that hopped right in front of a road and looked directly at the camera, only to be promptly run over by a truck, with blood and guts splattered across the title screen and the camera. The moment I saw it, I immediately clicked away out of fear and shock. I ended up not playing any of the actual game. Now that I'm older, I have looked everywhere online and i can't seem to find anything that matches my description.

[PC][1998-1999] Wild West mini-games featuring fast food cowboys

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (Windows 95/98)

Genre: Shooting/Minigames

Estimated year of release: 1998-1998

Graphics/art style: First person. Pre-rendered

Notable characters: A burger and a hot dog cowboys with hats and googly eyes. They had arms and legs. I only remember them from the introductory video. The game's icon could have been a hamburger.

Notable gameplay mechanics: You shoot with the mouse. It allows split-screen multiplayer with 2 mices.

Other details:

It was a game for kids. The mouse cursor was a small bullseye and you could choose and play a minigame with it. The squares had thumbnails of the games, and I think the background was the sky with clouds. I think it was a red bullseye for player 1 and blue or green for player 2.

I think it had at least 9-12 minigames because I remember three rows of squares with at least three or four minigames each.

  • You could shoot biplanes before they get closer to you.
  • You could shoot biplanes flying right to left.
  • You could shoot a coin (or maybe a can?) to make it go higher in the sky.
  • You could shoot outlaws in windows (like a shooting range).
  • I think there were one with balloons and another with bottles.

It had a fully 3D intro. I remember that it ended like a Buster Keaton's movie with a house falling on the hot dog and burger cowboys. They were rivals, but both watched in fear as the house collapsed. They were saved because they went through the window.

I played it in Spain. It might be a shareware game. I asked about it years ago. I hope I'll have better luck this time. I've provided a more specific date because I know I was also playing the Piranha Panic's demo and Bomby at the time.
