[Collection] I thought I'd sold my N64 years ago... turns out I still have it! 😅

Post image

I was going through some old stuff and came across my Nintendo 64 and all these games and controllers!

The funny thing is, I was convinced I'd sold it years ago! I'd completely forgotten I still had it.

Seeing all this again brought back so many memories, especially Zelda, GoldenEye and Bad Fur Day. Now I really want to plug it in and play again.

Only problem is, I don't have a TV that can connect to it anymore, so it looks like I'll have to spend a little money before I can enjoy it again 😅

Any advice on what kind of tv would be the best?

[META] Decompilations and recompilations

Hi everyone, with the emergence of AI and the proliferation of decompilations and recompilations I was thinking of redirecting those kinds of submissions towards r/decomps. Our current AI rule was first intended towards generated content (art at first ) and their self promotion.

Any suggestions about this topic?

Have a great weekend!

This was an amazing experience. As a 22 year old I unfortunately never got to experience any of these computers and consoles so it was honestly mind blowing for me. I'd never played an N64, original NES, Dreamcast, Master System or Mega Drive and it was so fun to try them out. And the huge cabinets full of classic games were all available to take out and play!

As a lover of CRTs it was also exciting to see so many different sets in person, though they did kind of start to give me a bit of a headache after a while from the flickering haha. The TV that was hooked up to the Dreamcast was unbelievable though, it looked so crisp and the colours popped so nicely!

Some classic highlights:

- 3D Monster Maze

- Elite

- Rogue

- SimCity

- Goldeneye 007

- Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, and Duck Hunt

- Banjo Kazooie

- Sonic The Hedgehog 2

There were lots of other sections too, a room full of BBC Micros for learning coding, a room with Arduinos and 3D printers, an area of PCs all connected for multiplayer DOOM sessions. There were original arcade cabinets, shelves of cassette recorders and Sony and Aiwa Walkmans. An amazing place that was a joy to visit.

[Story Time!] The late, great TRS80 Model III

Post image
53 Upvotes

This is where it all started for me, on the Radio Shack TRS80 Model III. This is the computer that led me to a life of nerdery. I absolutely fell in love from the second I sat down. That powder blue phone next to me was soon sending 300 bits per second screaming across the 216 area code to connect to local BBSs downloading the anarchist's cookbook. I was inspired by a pic I just saw of someone on their Commodore 64, and I think that computer probably is my holy grail, but this is my earliest show and one that really sums me up, through and through. If this shot moves you, we are probably very close to being good friends.

[Fun] Obscure PS1 stuff

So I’ll try not to put myself too much but worked at a cash converters in the uk and gentleman tells me he has a load of ps1 stuff he would like to sell, dev kits and whatnot. Tell him it’s far too niche for the store but I have an interest. Turns out he was a Sony executive back in the day, has a whole room of old consoles sealed stuff and dev kits, gold discs and merch. End up selling most of it off to a collector but find these just hanging around the house.
The pin badge is polygonman, who was due to be the mascot for the ps1 when it launched but the Japanese execs cancelled the whole thing on the day of the conference and this stuff had to be destroyed.
Just fun bit of history :)

[Fun] I'm playing Alundra

First off, it's frikin awesome! I really recommend it for anybody that is a big fan of Zelda games. It's a bit darker than Zelda and the puzzles are a bit more cryptic, but it's really good. Also, I think that the five blessings that the Saints in this tomb are referring to are just the five zombies I've killed so far. Lol I was expecting maybe a more classic Definition of blessings there, guys. 😆

Edit: this cryptic-assed crypt can suck dog eggs. Why am I so bad at riddles!! 🥹

[Question] What’s the best thing to do with old NES, Genesis and 2600 games that nobody wants?

• Upvotes

Games such as Bayou Billy, T&C Surf Designs, Milons Secret Castle (all cart only) etc. I’d feel bad throwing them away but also nobody wants them.

[GIF Post] An interesting trick for this Nintendo 8-bit Famicom cute and sweet puzzle game, Binary Land (Hudson, 1985, FC).

You control two loving penguins with the mirror movement to reach and unlock the locked heart, while shooting the enemies like spiders. This gameplay is quite unique back in the 80s. And, you can hear to Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” upon unlocking the heart.

The trick: get both penguins to cross each other 16 times in 1-3 second intervals to give birth to a baby penguin.

[Emulation] Rasberry Pi or Mini PC

Hey everyone I’m looking to build an emulator to play retro games. Mostly N64, GameCube, and SEGA.

Is a rasberry pi or mini pc better? I’m looking to be under $200 all in if possible.

Follow up question. Can you play two player games with either the rasberry pi or mini pc? Thanks!

[Discussion] What games had the longest loading times back in the day?

Something that just stuck out to me was how games used to take forever to load as don't get me wrong in that having modern games load so quick is really nice, but I wanted to get a better understanding of why some PC games in the 8 bit days of gaming took so long to load.

To me, this stuff is fascinating to learn about because I sometimes heard stories about how users back in the day would complain that their games would take forever to load as what I noticed is that games could sometimes take at least 3 minutes to get past the loading screen, so again I wanted to better understand how the process was done in the 8 bit era of gaming.

[Discussion] If you could relive one era of gaming as it happened, which one would you pick?

• Upvotes

Something I’ve been thinking about lately: I have Ocarina of Time sitting on my 3DS. It’s been there for months. I know it’s one of the greatest games ever made, and I still haven’t touched it.

I think what’s missing isn’t the game, it’s the moment. When it came out, everyone was playing it at the same time. Friends were stuck on the same dungeon, magazines were hyping it for months, people were trading tips at school. Playing it alone in 2026 just doesn’t hit the same.

It’s the same with shows. Stuff I watched week by week with everyone talking about it, I loved. Stuff I tried to catch up on years later, I usually dropped.

So I’m curious: if you could go back and experience one era of gaming live, with the hype, the trailers, the console launches and everyone playing the same new releases, which era would you choose? And which launch would you most want to be there for?

For me it’s probably the N64/PS1 era. Mario 64, FF7, Ocarina, MGS... that run feels unreal looking back.

[Discussion] Were you there in 1995 following the 3 main 5th gen consoles before any of the them were released in the west? Which one did you think was going to win, and why?

Did you correctly predict the PlayStation was going to win, or you thought Nintendo or Sega was going to win? Did you think cartridges might mean Nintendo might become last place? What did you think?

[Discussion] A lot of us still play RPGs in this community, right?

I made a post asking what fangames you all like, mostly talking about 90s rpgs. Almost everything that everyone replied with was for an action game from an 80s console where the story feels more like an afterthought.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back takes the #14 spot with 5 votes.

Top 10:

#1 Pitfall II: Lost Caverns

#2 Yars' Revenge

#3 Adventure

#4 H.E.R.O.

#5 River Raid

#6 Pitfall!

#7 Missile Command

#8 Frogger

#9 Solaris

#10 Keystone Kapers

Top 20:

#11 Montezuma's Revenge

#12 Dig Dug

#13 Space Invaders

#14 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Rules:

  1. Two games will win their place each round (we start from #1 and work our way down). For the top 10 only one game will win per day instead.
  2. Most combined upvotes for each of the two individual games (one individual game for the top 10) wins the spot(s) each round (upvotes add while downvotes subtract).
  3. Nominate one game of the Atari 2600 per comment. (Nominations will only be counted if the game title is the only comment or if you specify that your choice of game is your nomination for this round within your comment or if the nominated game is clearly separated from the rest of your comments.) (ex. Pitfall or I nominate Pitfall this round.) Please nominate using the full title of the game.
  4. Name a specific game title, not entire runs.
  5. Official Atari 2600 multi-game cartridge(s) are allowed, just list them correctly.
  6. The Atari 2600 is region free so ANY official games available on the console are eligible for nomination.
  7. Indy games are allowed as long as they have their own individual cartridge and can be played on original hardware.
  8. Only complete games on cartridge(s) can be nominated (sorry Cheetah Program & test cartridges).
  9. If two or more games would be tied to place for a ranking I will inform DA PEOPLE in the following post so that everyone can vote which games should get the ranking between the tied options.
  10. Games nominated that have not already placed on the top 100 list should not be removed at any time by the individual who originally placed them.
