It is incredible. It also reminds me of why I am on Folio Societyās emailing list⦠but havenāt bought many of their books in recent years! The target audience changed too far. You really have their golden era, just shy of a few limited editions and classic childrenās (like Hans Andersen & Grimm)

Thank you! š»
Yeah, this took nearly 20 years to assemble and the vast majority were purchased secondhand. Their catalog in recent years for the most part is not really in my wheelhouse but there have been some notable exceptions.

Wowwee!! Thatās a big chunk of change you have invested there! At least yours will be worth something to pass on, not like my four thousand, mostly American History, that routinely sell online for five or six bucks. Tragically, many well-written history books end up in the dumpster.
Iāve been studying American history, specifically the Civil War, for about 50 years and I think my greatest fear is that when I die, my family will just roll a dumpster up to the side of the house and throw them all in. Ugh!
My aunt turned me onto book collecting when I was ten, and Hunter S. Thompsonās Gonzo helped me learn to believe in myself enough to begin writing.
Jimmy Irsayās very eclectic collection was on display in Indy once, and he had the original single-spaced typewritten scroll of Kerouacās āOn the Roadā on display. It was simply amazing! Just the glass display mustāve been 50 feet long! Very impressive.
What a simply remarkable collection you have there. Bravo!š šš

Thatās very kind of you to say, thank you! š«¶š«¶
Hopefully your books are given a second life, 4k books is an outstanding collection!
My aunt was a librarian and similarly taught me about books and fine presses and the differences when I was a young teenager and thatās when I started collecting Folio Society books nearly 20 years ago. Love Hunter S. Thompson as well!

What a wonderful collection! I have a question, I see you have the Folio edition of Pliny Natural History. Does it include the original latin text? Judging by the number of pages I thought it doesn't, but I could never find a confirmation.

Goodness, those sound interesting! I will have to check them out sometime. Do you annotate your books (especially your nonfiction ones)?

I donāt write in any of my books but I do take notes separately in my own notebooks.

Yeah. I'm sort of the same way; if I deem a book of mine to be too special (for lack of a better word) to physically write in/mark up, I will use a separate notebook for it.
Anyways, your home library is absolutely beautiful, like I said. š Not to mention very impressive!

Thank you š«¶
Yes, theyāre wonderful, Iāve been collecting them for nearly 20 years. I always wanted an heirloom-quality library with editions that will endure. Iām still in my mid 30s, so I hope to have a long reading life ahead of me!

Also mid 30s but I am not quite at your level of cool. However, just got divorced and turned his office into a library with fairy lights so maybe in a few years lol

Youāre very kind, but that sounds like a fantastic reappropriation of space haha! Best wishes on building your library! ā„ļø

The books are obviously amazing, but wow that view. Is that the front of your house and the approach to the house? Is it private?
3
u/FeelinDead 2d ago
Thank you š«¶
Yes, thatās the front of my house but itās just on a cul-de-sac. Thereās actually two more houses to the left out of picture but directly across the street itās just forest because thereās a deep ravine there and the builders decided to leave it all alone. I really donāt think you could build a house there anyways as the ravine is so deep, but yeah, all the trees are definitely beautiful. I love looking out the window while I read!

The Singularity is an incredible book for its time. I could picture everything in the book with pristine clarity.

This is a thing of pure beauty. No expense spared. I always think that if I ever won the lottery, one of the first things I would do is buy all the books Iāve ever wanted for a library. It looks like youāre living the dream. Incredible collection. P.s. Iām very jealous of that copy of The Decameron
