Discussion Native French speaker!

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m a native French speaker, and I’m really interested in improving my English. I’m also potentially interested in learning Spanish, as I think it’s a beautiful language!
I’d love to meet new people, make friends, and have interesting conversations about pretty much anything. I’m happy to help you with your French in exchange for some help with English or Spanish.
Don’t hesitate to send me a message if you’d like to chat! 😊

Speaking Practice I’ve finished the languagetransfer and Paul Nobel’s courses and am midway through Michel Thomas’, what are some other good audio resources that focus on speaking skills rather than just listening?

For those that haven’t tried, the courses I listed feature a structure where the narrator prompts you in English to say a phrase, there’s several seconds for you to attempt it, and then they give you the French translation. LT is free and Nobel’s and Thomas’ courses are free for spotify premium users btw

I’ve found them very helpful in that I could work on active production and not just listening skills like with regular podcasts, and I could practice hands/eyes free while driving, doing chores, etc. I also use the Natulang app that is geared around this style, which I like a lot!

Any recommendations, especially if they’re on spotify, would be appreciated!

AI Assisted Post I created an AI-generated 140-day French course with interactive lessons, grammar guides, pronunciation and exercises

• Upvotes

I’m learning French with a goal of NCLC 7, and I used ChatGPT and Gemini to create a structured course for myself.

It includes:

  • A detailed beginner introduction with study tips, English–French word patterns and false friends.
  • 140 days of lessons covering grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking and writing.
  • Separate pronunciation/IPA, verb conjugation, and noun/adjective gender and plural guides.
  • Interactive HTML lessons with flashcards, browser audio, explained exercises and saved notes.
  • Final revision and a comprehensive exam-style practice set.

The main focus is learning how French patterns work, rather than just memorising rules. It’s AI-generated and hasn’t been professionally reviewed.

Sharing it in case others find it useful! If you spot mistakes or have suggestions for what to add or change, I’d love to hear them.

Resource Recommendation Need a French Tutor

I am currently at a b1 level and need somebody who’d take me to c1 level as soon as possible, which means I need a tutor who is a C1+ in french. Kindly recommend a teacher you’ve had an amazing experience with, preferably based in India (but doesn’t really matter because I’d be taking online classes).

Resource Recommendation Avoid The Language SKOOL (TLS) – High-pressure sales, fake promises, and non-existent support.

If you are currently being hunted by the sales team at The Language SKOOL (TLS), stop. Do not sign that contract. Do not transfer a single rupee.

I made the mistake of ignoring the red flags, and I am here to ensure you don’t make the same one. Here is the reality of what happens the moment their sales targets are met and your payment clears:

  1. The "Bait & Switch" Sales Tactics

When they are trying to lock you in, TLS is all smiles, promising immense flexibility, personalized support, and a student-first environment. This is a facade. Their sales team is purely focused on hitting aggressive monthly targets. Once that money hits their account, you cease to be a student and become a non-entity.

  1. The Ghosting Phase

I requested a simple batch adjustment due to a schedule change. The result? Two months of complete silence. Despite constant follow-ups with operations, student desks, and management, they ignored me entirely. They essentially held my fees hostage while I was left in the dark, unable to start my course.

  1. The Legal "Gaslighting"

When they finally surfaced, it wasn't to apologize or help—it was to deliver a robotic, tone-deaf response from their "Legal Desk." They hid behind a fine-print "no-refund" clause, showing zero empathy for the fact that their incompetence made the course attendance impossible. They offered "credit balances" and "transfer options" that are effectively worthless because, after this experience, no sane person would want to continue associated with this brand.

Bottom Line: TLS operates like a numbers mill. They will aggressively pressure you to join, take your money, and then abandon you the moment you need support.

Save your money. Find a reputable institution that respects its students. Stay far away from The Language SKOOL.

Discussion Anyone interested in chatting buddies in french A2-B1

I am looking for people to chat in french like daily or whenever we have time back and forth.

This will be completely platonic French learning chat. We can talk about anything like friends about daily life, etc. but making sure we are helping each other improve French.

I am aiming for my TCF test this year end so I need someone to chat with to practice my writing naturally. Speaking can be done too but I am mainly looking for chat buddies for now.

If anyone is on the same boat feel free to DM rather than commenting.

Vocabulaire : voiture (f) = car / sol (m) = ground / voler = to fly / atterrir = to land / sauter = to jump / par-dessus = over / prévoir = to plan / fabriquer = to make / seule = only / vol (m) = flight

English translation

Tesla presented a new version of its Roadster sports car on Thursday. During the demonstration, the car left the ground and “flew” a short distance before landing. It also jumped over several vehicles. Tesla says the car uses technology from SpaceX to help it fly. Tesla plans to start making the new Roadster in 2028. Only a special version called the Rocket will have the full flying system.

Question Are these courses worth the money or should I go with a tutor?

Bon soir!

I’m a Canadian with VERY basic French(took it for 6 years in grade school which was 30 years ago)that is en route to getting my German passport. My wife and I are seriously considering moving our family to France for a good chunk of time in the next 2-5 years. She speaks it’s very well and can work remotely. I’ve got over 10 years experience in brewing so I’d ideally get a job at a brasserie, so I’ll need to be fluent in French.

I am currently listening to Coffee Break French and InnerFrench podcasts. I am strongly considering dropping some money into a structured course and I’m currently looking at:

Learn French Canada -cost is $4000 for 12 months of 1.5 hr live virtual classes twice a week. 24/7 access to 50+ hours of lessons. They claim to go from A0 to B1+ in 6 months and then 6 months of the TEF/TCF exam prep, which I don’t need.

Alliance Francaise Calgary -they charge per level. To complete all of A1 would be $1590 over 6 months. A2 $1590 over 6 months. B1 has more content so $1950 over 7-14 months and if I wanted to complete B2 it’s $3900 over 10 sessions. So $9080 over the course of over 2 years. The classes are twice a week for 2 hours and are in-person.

Those are good chunks of change so I’m trying to weigh the option of just going with a good tutor. I do enjoy structure as it motivates me, but I am already pretty motivated on my own and have been listening to and practicing French an hour a day for the past few weeks.

Any input, experiences with these programs or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Grammar Learning French A1-A2, Grammer?

Bonjour!

I want to learn french, I am at the bottom of the barrel currently. I speak english and Arabic and am have decided to self-study french. I can give about 3 hours a day for the next couple of months, some days even more and I would like to reach B1 level by January or February.

I have found a couple of resources so far, for a textbook I am looking at assimil, https://www.assimil.com/fr/sans-peine/1671-french-9782700571240.html

however I have heard that it lacks a grammar foundation which is very important for any language, so my question is, should I find another textbook or should I pair this textbook with another textbook more detailed in grammar?

I know that this is not an easy question and has multiple different answers and that is completely fine with me. I want to see all different perspectives.

Resource Recommendation Need Help to Decide AF Delhi or Private Tutor

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to learn French from scratch to the B2 level to prepare for the TCF Canada exam. I’m currently confused about which option would be better: Alliance Française (AF) Delhi’s online classes or a native French tutor who teaches in a small batch of 3–5 students.

Here’s how the two options compare:

  • Alliance Française Delhi: Classes 4–5 times a week, with each class lasting 2 hours. However, the next batch will start at the beginning of next year.
  • Native French tutor: Classes are held for 2 hours per week in a small batch of 3–5 students, and I can start as early as next week.

My main concern is whether I should start learning French with the tutor right away or wait until next year to join Alliance Française.

Which option would you recommend for someone starting from scratch and aiming to reach B2 level to clear the TCF Canada exam?

I’d appreciate any advice, especially from those who have experience with either option. Thanks in advance!

Question A2-B1 plateau, self taught

Hey everyone!

I’ve been stuck at the A2-B1 plateau regarding my writing for a few months now.

My listening and comprehension skills are much higher than my writing, but I face roadblocks:

Synonyms and everyday expressions: I lack a rich vocabulary of native collocations and synonyms.

Native sentence structures: When I want to say something, I end up translating it from English to French in my head, which doesn't always work out correctly. (English is not my native but I'm C1)

Prepositions: I constantly struggle with the right prepositions.

Tenses: Sometimes I mess up verb tenses as well.

My question is: Has anyone managed to break out of this exact phase? 😅

Also, are there any structured, gradual resources (textbooks, channels, or books) that focus specifically on grouping everyday expressions, idioms, and natural collocations?

Any advice or recommendations would mean a lot! Thanks!

Question How to get back on track

I studied french for ~6 years in school, but I didn't have any classes more 2 years now. I've always had good grades, but struggled woth speaking. I don't want to lose everything I learned int hose years :( I think reading would be beneficial, but what else could I do? Do you guys have any recommendations for french youtubers (main focus shouldn't be the language though, just entertainment, i like movies and books so maybe channels that discuss that?)

Discussion Unique experience or par for the course?

I have attempted New French With Ease 3 times now. I get into such a rhythm with the book and the audio and then at chapter 20, I peter out. It feels like I’m moving along, making progress, and then suddenly it’s not clicking. I lose steam, skip a day, skip another, then it’s been a couple months. I start over, same process. Acknowledging this might be laziness (guilty), ADHD (also guilty), or working constantly and having few hours to myself and a kneejerk reaction to having something else on my “to-do” list, but wondering if it’s some phenomena I’ve not heard of out respect to foreign language learning that I could overcome outside of what I typically do to blast thru my self-imposed obstacles. Accepting candid feedback and suggestions.

Question How do you actually practice French verb conjugations?

I am learning French and try to build my own learning tools while I do so. I am currently wondering how I can build my own "conjugation trainer" and did not have a eureka moment so far...

Whats actually a good approach to practice French verb conjugations? Do you just memorize conjugation tables and repeat them until they stick? Or do you use any specific exercises, tools or methods that work particularly well for you?

Would be interesting to hear how you guys approach this!

Hello kind folk of Learn French, please help

I never quite get when to use Je me or Vous vous vs just the pronoun. Is there some logical way to help me remember when to use it?
Or does it just come with repetition and reading and practice?

Grammar "Subir" has the same construction as "to undergo"

"sub-" is latin for "under-", and "ir" is the same root as future and conditional of "aller" (j'irai, tu iras etc., also gave Spanish "ir")
