Support/Vent I’ve found 2 wasps in 1 day and I’m horrified

This morning I saw a huge wasp flying around in my bedroom, just now (late at night) I saw another one. I literally cannot do this right now, I have 3 exams this week and I have no one to come help. I’m terrified of sleeping in my room (where I found them)

I texted my landlord but I’m so worried that more will come in while I wait for a reply, or worse, my landlord will take a while to do anything about it.

I eventually killed the one this morning with a cup (on accident) and its guts went everywhere. I was so disgusted I wanted to vomit, I’m not even afraid of them stinging me. I’m just so disgusted by their bodies and how huge they are

I hate this part of living alone so much. Help.

New to living alone adjusting to having nobody around

living alone seems simple from the outside, but there are probably a lot of little things you don't think about until you experience them. from managing every household task yourself to getting used to having nobody around, the adjustment can be different from what you expected.

for those who live alone now, what surprised you the most when you first moved out? was there anything that turned out to be much easier or harder than you expected?

I have all of the time in the world to cook weeknights this week, so would love to hear your favorite go-to, cozy fall soup recommendations.

I usually default to a lemon/chicken/rice soup, minestrone or lentil with vinegar.

Cleaning & Organization 🧽 How do y'all motivate yourselves to clean?

I've got a bad habit of not giving a f*** about anything after I get home from work because "who's gonna see it anyway" which is NOT the mindset I've had when I've lived with others. With others im a type A cleaner. Everythings spotless or I'm actively working to get it there. I had systems for organization and chore rotations for deep cleaning. The whole 9. But now that I live alone and it's just me and my cat I feel burnt TF out. I work about 70-80+ hours a week and I go to the gym 2-5 times a week. When I'm out of my home I'm SUPER productive. At work I'm a high achiever and in the gym I push myself. I meal prep often and follow health goals but outside of that? Not doing great. Lately I've been doing better but I'm still not where I need to be.

I pair chores with stuff I like like music or videos playing in the background. Do y'all have any other tips and tricks?

Pets & Animals 🐾 Surprise encounter

I was walking my dog this evening. We didn’t go far-it was mostly just a pee break since we live in apartments.

So there I was, with my dog sniffing around, and I hear yelling, then a much larger dog comes charging towards us offleash with a human close behind. From what I could tell, I think it escaped from a nearby unit. In that moment, I honestly thought that it intended to attack my dog. I yanked her up into my arms by her leash (she was wearing a harness, so it’s not like I choked her out or anything).

I’m not sure what my plan was-it all happened so fast-but all I knew in that moment was that if someone is getting attacked, then I would rather it be me.

Luckily, the other human caught up with the other dog before impact and immediately took it away, but that was definitely a more exciting pee break than I had planned.

I've often seen it posted here asking how people deal with illness. Personally, I rely on Walmart delivery, but I saw this article and thought someone might find it helpful:

General Discussion Anyone else completely alone? As in, no friends, no family, no partner, on top of living alone?

If so, what is your life like? Sometimes I feel at peace, but everyone keeps shoving in my face about how humans are social creatures and that this is extremely unhealthy for me. I used to have a huge circle of friends but I lost everyone once I started setting boundaries and matching people’s energy.

I’ve been extra isolated lately but I’m still taking some online classes for school. Even in my classes we are talking about the dangers of isolation, etc. My professors like to emphasize it a lot. I also have to do some presentations about “loved ones” and talk about my friends and family.

But I don’t have any. I legit do not have a soul to turn to lol 🥲

Casual Question 🗨 Living alone taught me things about myself therapy never did. What did it teach you?

I’ve been in therapy on and off for years, but nothing exposed my actual patterns like living by myself did. No one to blame for the mess, no one to perform for, no one to distract me from my own habits good or bad.

I found out I eat badly when I’m sad, not when I’m busy. I found out I actually like quiet mornings more than I ever admitted. I found out I’m a lot more capable of handling emergencies alone than I gave myself credit for and also a lot lonelier.

It’s weird how four walls and nobody else’s schedule can hold up a mirror like that.

Support/Vent 65th birthday alone

It's one thing to live alone but birthdays alone suck. Not just any birthday, but the one that signals you're technically "old", a senior, etc. etc. I have a vacation at a nice resort, lining up a massage, facial, show, dinner, beach, etc., but doing it alone is a whole other level of blankness I'm having difficulty finding words to describe. Friends were busy, family is not well, so here I am facing 65 alone. I never in a million years imagined this for my golden years. Ever. I am working to be thankful. This time last year I was dealing with a heart condition that is now fixed. I'm still working to make it easier, simpler, where I can enjoy it and manage it on my own but I sure could use some company. Happy birthday to all the other loners seeking joy, especially on their special days. 🫶🏽🎂🥳🍰🎈🧁🎊🫅🏽

Support/Vent Thoughts on how to make it work

Hey all. I’ve been living alone around 2 years now. I mostly love it! Like anything there’s pros and cons, but the major pros for me are freedom, autonomy over my space, and being able to not feel like I’m intruding on anyone’s boundaries.

I unfortunately wasn’t able to get my lease renewed starting in the new year. I live in an amazing marsh townhome, at a heavily discounted rent price because I am a public school teacher, and my landlord was generous.

I live in a high- rent area, and the lowest rent pretty much for a studio or small apartment in a complex is 1,700-1,800. I pay like 500 less for what I have now and sometimes struggle to make ends meet. I work SO hard as a teacher, and I’m single. I’m in my late 20s. I know with this move im likely going to have to take on a second job, and I already feel stretched a little thin.

As much as I want to blame “the system” and rental hikes in my area and educators being underpaid and overworked, I want to make this work. I want to live alone primarily, and if absolutely necessary I would want to ve the one that is the primary lease holder if I *had* to get a roommate.

What I’m looking for from you is….practical advice? Experience? Anecdotes? What have you done when you were in my place? What would you do if you were me?

Thanks in advance. I generally just want to feel more secure and hopeful in my life and finances, and I know, tradeoffs are inevitable when finances are low. Just wanted to see what y’all had in mind.

Thanks in advance! Have a great week.

Life Stories 🗣️ My flat feels really quiet and empty

I've lived on my own 2.5 years. It took some time to adjust, especially after having a pretty turbulent traumatic life, but I grown to love it and having my own little sanctuary.

I've just had my boyfriend stay with me for a month, whilst he recovered from major surgery. I was going through a lot of other things at the time, and the caring responsibilities were extra pressure, but it was a welcome distraction even though at times it was very tiring as he was pretty immobile. Even in my small space, we got on really well, and his energy always fills the room he's in, wherever he is.

We have no plans to live together for various reasons, one being that his routine in the week is very different from mine, so we usually only see each other weekends. I used to find it hard in the week being comfortable with my own company, but I got used to it.

He went home today and my flat is soooo quiet. I feel almost teary he's gone, and we're back now to our usual pattern. I don't know why i feel a bit bereft. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Casual Question 🗨 How do you make your home feel more warm and lively when you're living alone?

Lately I've been coming home from work feeling completely drained, and I feel like my home environment isn't helping either. I actually enjoy living alone and having my own space, but recently everything just feels so quiet and dull. I spend most of my day working, and when I finally get home, I just eat, lie down, scroll through my phone, and eventually go to sleep. Then I wake up and do the same thing all over again.

I've been thinking about changing a few things around the house because I want to feel excited about coming home again. Maybe adding some plants, changing the lighting, rearranging furniture, or just making the place feel a little more cozy and welcoming. I don't really want to spend a lot of money on decorating though, especially when I'm not even sure if that's going to help. I just want my home to feel like somewhere I can actually relax and enjoy my time instead of another place where I feel exhausted.

I know changing my surroundings won't magically fix being burned out from work, but I feel like having a nicer environment might at least make my evenings better. For those who live alone, what little changes made your home feel more alive and comforting? Do you have any routines or things around the house that genuinely make you happy to come home?

New to living alone Night Time Struggles

Recently separated after 13 years and this is the first time I’ve ever actually lived alone.

I bought an apartment in a gated community and all day I can go about my day with no real issue, but at night I am constantly afraid that someone is going to kick my door in. I can’t sleep as well as a result. Any advice or tricks that have worked for anyone?

Casual Question 🗨 What's your favorite thing to do in the evenings?

• Upvotes

What's your favorite thing to do in the evenings/night after everything that needs to be done is over? Mine has been watching movies, reading books, and gaming. Do you stick to a routine or always do something different?
