General Question Is it just me or is uni so much easier than highschool?

I’m in my final semester of a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Cyber Security Governance, and I’ve been thinking about how much easier university has felt compared to high school. At uni, I’ve maintained a WAM of 74 despite barely going to tutorials or lectures unless they’re mandatory. I usually study for exams the night before and often do assignments pretty last minute, yet my marks are still much better than they were in high school.

In high school, we had to be there five days a week and constantly move between different classes, whereas uni feels way more relaxed. There’s generally no expectation to attend anything that isn’t compulsory which is not many units, which I actually really enjoy.Has anyone else had the same experience with uni, or is it just me?

General Question Macquarie English requirement feels ridiculous in my situation — Australian citizen + 10 years schooling, but apparently I need IELTS/PTE?

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone who knows Macquarie’s admissions/English requirements can explain this because I genuinely don’t understand how this makes sense.

I’m an Australian citizen and spent around 10 years in Australia for school before moving to Pakistan with my family. I completed my secondary schooling in Australia up to Year 10, then completed Cambridge International GCE A Levels in Pakistan.

My A Levels were:

  • Accounting — B
  • Economics — C
  • Business — D

All of my A Level subjects were taught and assessed in English.

I’m trying to apply for the Bachelor of Professional Accounting at Macquarie. I contacted admissions and was told that because I did not take English as an A-Level subject, I need to provide IELTS or PTE Academic.

What I don't understand is how that fits with Macquarie's own English Language Admission Policy.

Section 4 – Recognised qualifications with English as the Language of Instruction

The policy says Macquarie may accept recognised qualifications from specified English-speaking countries/regions where English was the language of instruction.

It also has a separate residency provision.

Section 8 – Other approved evidence deemed to satisfy minimum standards

Clause 18 says:

“On a case-by-case basis, the University may accept other documentary evidence”

The same section specifically lists at least five years' residency in Australia as documentary evidence that can be considered, with applications assessed case-by-case.

So I'm struggling to understand why my situation apparently cannot even be considered under the case-by-case provision.

I’m not asking to have the English requirement completely ignored. I’m asking whether evidence such as:

  • Australian citizenship
  • around 10 years of schooling/residency in Australia
  • completing Year 10 in Australia
  • Cambridge A Levels taught and assessed in English
  • Economics at A Level (C)

can be considered as evidence of English proficiency under Section 4 and/or Section 8.

What makes this even more confusing is that Macquarie's own policy says the university may accept other documentary evidence on a case-by-case basis, but admissions has basically told me that because I don't have A-Level English, I need IELTS/PTE.

Has anyone else dealt with something similar at Macquarie?

Especially interested in hearing from people who:

  1. Had Australian citizenship/residency but completed their later schooling overseas;
  2. Did Cambridge A Levels without taking A-Level English; or
  3. Successfully got Macquarie to consider alternative English evidence under Section 8.

I’m honestly just trying to understand why having spent years being educated in Australia apparently isn't enough evidence of English proficiency for this particular application.

General Question UTS or Macquarie for Business

So I'm a Yr 12 student planing to study business at either UTS or Macquarie. I already got an early entry offer from Mac and applied for SRS for UTS and hoping to hear back by November.

Was hoping on business students at these unis sharing their opinions and experiences but also students as a whole sharing how social life is. I'm a very social person and I do agree that it is what you make of it. However, because UTS doesn't have a main large campus like Mac does I was wondering if that would affect meeting people ect.

Mac is definitely further away from me, around 1 hour 20 mins where UTS is 40 mins so it can be hard to choose between social life and convenience. Do we think the commute is justified?

Happy to hear different opinions and experiences though, thank you!

Though I did receive an unconditional offer for MacUni next year I guess it doesn't really matter if I bomb my HSC I just have to complete it, but I'm still so anxious. General Question This Uni is absolute shit

How can you keep increasing the amenities fee and have wifi this monumentally shit?

How do you keep increasing prices when we have one unit conveyor doing shitty online lectures and then doing ALL the tutorials on his own. Goddam that’s fucked.

If you’re faculty… why do you put up with that shit? If you’re higher leadership, fuck you, this is supposed to be about education and I feel like I could learn more doing my own research but I need the fucking qualifications. It’s a monopoly and they hold us in a vice.

Anyway, how ya’ll doing? (I had to have a question to fit the tag)

Birds are fit though.

General Question Stressed - Early Entry / L&A

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m trying to find people who’ve gotten into macquarie with similar marks as mine. I am absolutely terrified of not getting in because of how disadvantaged (family issues) I’d felt during year 11 and well into year 12. The courses I’ve applied for are:

  1. Cybersecurity
  2. Science
  3. Arts and Science
  4. Criminology
  5. IT

I am also curious to see if anyone got offers through SRS and not from Leaders and Achievers.

General Question How to make ~$1000 per week as a full time uni student?

I am doing 4 units and go in three days a week. I also have a casual job with +- 20h per week and I make around $700-$800pw, it’s not bad but not enough for my situation. I need to start making at least $1k weekly after tax. I’ve looked/applied at a bunch of places in liquor&gaming, reception, paid internships, etc, but nothing has worked for me as they either require more hours than I can do or I get rejected/overlooked. My current job is kinda flexible schedule-wise, so I can reduce my hours to get more at a new job, but I can’t get any more hours at the moment, which is why I’m looking for a second source of income. Since now I work around 20h, I am happy to work up to 10h extra at the new place, so I can still leave time for study and personal commitments. I am doing business in uni and I also have my RSA and RCG, as well as a CERT IV in Retail Management. I don’t have a license atm so I can’t go anywhere far or work for places that require a license. I’m looking for places in lower north shore and CBD. Anyone have any recommendations? Or any other ways to make extra $200-300 pw? Anything helps.

General Question Tutor's racism and poor teaching ignored my Mac Uni

Hi everyone, this is going to be a bit of a long read but my classmates and I are really upset and don't really know what to do.

We have a tutor who has acted in a really unacceptable manner and the uni will not do anything with our requests or complaints. Some of her behaviours I think she thought were in good faith but made the whole class really uncomfortable and it seemed like she was constantly fixated on students' race which was really strange. This is an early childhood education degree. The following are only some of the things that happened over two days for our infrequent tutorial (yes, all this in only two days):

- Had an activity she described as 'let's all be aboriginal' (this had no educational value and was just us sitting there in silence and "imagining being one with the land".
- Made all of the international students sit isolated at a table away from the rest of the class and called them 'South Vietnam' repeatedly.
- Asked a girl based on her appearance, mid sentence, completely unrelated and in front of everyone why she chose to sit with her friends and not 'with South Vietnam' like she was silly for not sitting there.
- Spent the first TWO HOURS of our first class sending students outside to practice random singing and dancing, then chatted with the rest of the class about random stuff. Like her instructions were 'just make something up, someone can kick a soccer ball around while someone else dances and someone else sings a few notes here or there'. She literally would not take no for an answer when people said they weren't comfortable doing that and "performing" for the class. Again, we were meant to be learning about teaching in an early childhood setting, not doing tiktok dances for two hours??
- Continually and randomly pointed out and singled out student's heritage and asking where they're "really" from, assumed things about them because of their heritage.
- Made a show several times of stopping the whole class to "welcome" the few indigenous students to the land, acting as if we should be so grateful for HER to welcome US at random points throughout the lesson when it had nothing to do with anything.
- Out of the 100 slides we had to get through over the two days, she only ended up going through around 20. She claimed that she didn't personally care about the rest and so we would skip them. We learned essentially nothing. This was a whole session's work to be done in two days and she ignored it all.
- Called a middle eastern student "Hamas" and continued to call him wrong names despite the class correcting her around ten times. His name was two syllables and very simple.
- Was constantly late, up to 20 minutes and we would not even start to think about beginning the coursework for a minimum of 20 minutes after that. She would also take 20 minute long bathroom breaks throughout the entire day. The first part of both lessons was arranging everyone into seating based off of things like if they like soccer and what race they are.

- Called on students assuming they knew the answers to things such as "how is this done in china" to a south vietnamese girl and "what's the indigenous centre at macquarie called" to an indigenous girl. Kept calling these people out for information they didn't know based on their race despite constantly being met with discomfort and "I don't know" We are literally taught in our other units to never single a student out and assume they have all the answers about something cultural because of our perception of their background.
- Instead of teaching us how to accurately gather information from observing the behavious of children, she made half of us go on our phones and scroll instagram for half an hour while the others "observed" despite not being taught what to look for or how we're supposed to notate observations.
- Making students run across campus to buy her and other classmates coffee. When no one volunteered after she asked, she selected people to go and they would be gone for around 30-40 minutes. She would not let us start the next part of the lesson until they returned.
- Made generalisations like "aboriginals are low income" and "chinese kids are all responsible"
- When describing children from her teaching experiences and from the few videos we did end up watching, focusing on the colour of their skin which was never relevant and had nothing to do with things like their attention span or behaviours or how friendly or smart they are. Paraphrasing, but an example was "... then a little brown girl comes in with her rich mocha skin and she's hugging you and looks up at you with her big brown eyes and chocolate hair and her skin is just so dark and rich". I think she was meaning to tell us that some kids are just more social than others, but no one could tell as she just went on this tangent about a child's skin colour as if that dictates how they'll behave.
- Constantly misnaming POC students after being corrected several times, making fun of their names in class

- Would put her hands on students' shoulders or backs even if they physically recoiled away.

- Several students did not come back for the second day and several left half way through the second day because of her hostile teaching style. (This isn't an assumption, they have literally told other classmates that they felt it wasn't worth their time as they weren't learning, and that they felt uncomfortable, singled-out, and bullied). When a student brought up info, answered a question or entered a discussion that SHE INITIATED, she would shoot them down, tell them they were wrong several times, and then continue to explain 'her way' which proved them right. It was in such an uncomfortable way too, like this is an extremely awkward exchange I had with her:

Tutor: "Can anyone tell me why this thing happens"

Me: "Because of this process that affects this other thing, I think"

Tutor: "No. No you're wrong."

Me: "Oh okay!"

Tutor: "NO. You're wrong. That's wrong".

Me: "Okay..?"

Tutor: "You're wrong."

Me: "Okay! I'm saying okay, like correct me, tell me the right answer"

Tutor: *LITERALLY DESCRIBES EXACTLY WHAT I SAID BUT IN A MORE BASIC WAY and starts trailing off when she realises she's just proved my original answer right*

This happened to several students several times and made the classroom very tense and hostile. It felt like any time someone spoke it was a power struggle and she was insecure about 'losing' or being 'less right'.

I left the second day at lunch time, and was told by other students that after a talk I had been a part of that had happened in class, she openly mocked and bullied me and my perspective on indigenous matters as an indigenous student when I said "Indigenous people are just people too, if teachers are too scared that it's too difficult or sensitive to learn about their cultures they'll never ask or learn. Indigenous people aren't some scary exotic other species, you can ask them questions and if your heart is in the right place you'll be fine", because the tutor had gone on about how you basically can't ask or say anything these days or you'll get in trouble and tried to scare the whole class into not actually treating Indigenous cultures like they're worth looking into (one of our topics was literally on indigenous perspectives being valued in education).

She also has given us incredibly contradictory and vague assessment task instructions and has not responded to us on iLearn for literally over a month despite several people posting to ask for clarification as no one can figure out what she wants from us. The task was due ages ago and we are still waiting to recieve marks that we were meant to have last week (she keeps changing the date on the ilearn, which shows that she has been ignoring us for months, not just that she's somehow lost her iLearn password or something).. She also proudly told the class several times what a harsh marker she was, so with the confusion and lack of communication as well as apparently being proudly mean in her marks, everyone is incredibly scared of what she will grade us. Those students who have complained, including myself, are especially scared of punishment for reporting her behaviours via bad recieving marks.

This whole class was such a waste and literally half of the class have openly expressed between ourselves that they feel let down and uncomfortable.

Anyway, some of the students and myself submitted reports to the uni about this tutor's behaviour soon after the two infrequent tutorials about a month ago. This was basically met with radio silence for a month, until we got a response the other day that essentially said "We doubt she'll do it again, this complaint is now closed". Nothing about her uncomfortable racial remarks, nothing about her poor teaching, nothing to even say sorry that we are spending so much money on this class and have recieved no education and no support, nothing to assure us that we will be graded fairly, nothing. We're looking into appealing, but with how little the university seems to care we're not sure what to do and it feels unfair that we're having to fight so hard just to be heard.

Has anyone else had any experience with this process or a similar situation? Is there anything we can actually do, or will she just get away with this and we will get further into debt just to be bullied, ignored, and not even educated?

Sorry for the long read, I just don't know what to do to make the university care. It's not a great look for them when they ignore indigenous students who are reporting that they have been bullied by a racist tutor who can't even do her job. I'm so insanely disappointed.

Edit: I have submitted a report to the student ombudsman and am hoping that she at the very least is given some cultural sensitivity training and encouraged to reflect on her teaching capabilities, although I definitely would think it fair if they took it further than that! As much as I am very much pro name and shame, I'm not going to for this as I think I'll get in trouble both from the uni and I think it goes against this forum's rules. It's really disheartening to have DMs asking if it's a certain tutor in MQ's teaching degrees, not because people are asking, but that there are this many people in positions of authority at our university that match this description. Thanks for all your support in this, I'm just apalled that it has to go this far and us students have to put this much time and energy in just to have someone care. This was the straw that broke the camel's back with my perception of MQ as a university. Don't go here.

General Question What's the one thing about Macquarie that sets it apart from the other Sydney unis?

I feel like in a city with USyd, UNSW, and UTS all getting the attention, Macquarie sometimes gets overlooked in the conversation. But there are things this uni does differently or better that don't get enough recognition. What's the thing about MQ that you'd point to if someone asked you why you chose it over the others?

General Question What's the commute to Macquarie actually like and is it as bad as people say?

I feel like the location comes up a lot when people talk about MQ and the opinions are all over the place. For students who commute in, what's the reality? Is it manageable, is the metro station a game changer, or is it genuinely a pain? And does the campus make it worth the trip once you're actually here? Would love honest answers because the internet gives me a different take every time I look.

General Question International Students' Racism Complaints About Macquarie Uni Sydney — Worth Trusting for MS Cyber Security?

Hello everybody, hopefully everyone is doing well. I had a question - I'm from Pakistan and I was planning to do a Master's in Cyber Security in Australia. My BS in Cyber Security is being done from Pakistan itself, and I've checked a lot of universities in Australia, especially the ones with campuses in Melbourne and Sydney. Whenever I read their reviews, 90% of international students have complained - from small universities to big ones, all have the same reviews - that there's quite a lot of racism that has to be faced, and that staff don't handle international students' problems, they ignore them, etc.

My personal interest is Macquarie University in Sydney, but some international students give reviews saying to avoid this university, etc. I haven't found any university so far where international students are appreciating that university. For example, I read a comment/post in a Reddit group called MacUni where a student was regretting joining Macquarie University and wishing they had joined University of Newcastle instead.

I'm quite confused whether I should trust these reviews or not, and if I do trust them, are the bad experiences that international students face bearable, or are they the kind that mentally disturb students and worsen their mental condition? I need to do my Master's in Cyber Security, so if anyone from my own field who's at Macquarie University or any other university could share their experience, [that would help].

General Question session 3 units

i’m actually so annoyed by the lack of organisation and planning in this uni in terms of admin/enrolment stuff. Session 3 start in only two months this semester ends in a month and we still don’t even know which units Will run in session 3.

On top of all of this, literally no unit runs in session 3 except for stem units either. It is actually so unfair that you can’t catch up or get ahead in your degree unless you are a stem student which the uni only cares about.

I really hope they put some arts and law units in there too because they literally cancelled all the session 3 law units as well.

General Question Law international student coming from Glasgow uni

Hey just wondering how is Macquarie as a university as I’ve not really looked into it that much and start in January.

Is there any tips of classes I should take as I would be a 3rd year for the easiest courses to take and what should i expect study wise.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated and if anyone would want to hangout once I get here is more than welcome.

General Question Any boiling water taps that actually work?

So I’ve seen plenty of taps like this around, and I thought it would be pretty useful for making tea or something, but every time I’ve gone up to one, the hot side doesn’t work… for example, bottom of the SCO building by the CC entrance, there’s a sink but the tap does nothing.

General Question Bachelor Of Clinical Science

Hi I am using reddit for the first time so sorry if I did something wrong with this post lol. I got an unconditional offer for Bachelor of Clinical Science and I am hoping to get into maybe physiotherapy, occupational therapy or like audiology after completion, not yet 100% sure. I heard some people saying it may be difficult to get accepted into those post grad courses once completing ClinSci. I also wanted to ask is it hard to manage the work like how much time do I need to put every day because I am trying to run a business and have a bunch of other leadership responsibilities. THANK YOU FOR READING THIS.

General Question Engineering at Mac

Hey guys just wondering how Mac U's engineering program is for employment outcomes.

I've been tossing up a few engineering fields but I think I'll go electrical so any specific employment outcomes for that specifically would be much appreciated.

The main reason I want to come here is obviously the great campus, which I've visited many times because... I live only a short walk away from here. I live among the Macquarie Park apartments near Macquarie Centre so yeah.

For some context, I'm looking to transfer out of UNSW to here after first year, just because everything was a bit too much, and the trimesters just magnified those issues. I understand that UNSW is removing them soon, but I still think that I would not be able to pass electrical engineering at UNSW if I were to undertake it. Travel time to UNSW is probably around 1 and a half hours in total, whilst for Macquarie, it would be barely 10-20 minutes walk. I know some people will tell me to stay but I am rather serious about me not being able to pass UNSW electrical engineering, at least for a while. Trust me, I know my where my capabilities start and end, and I don't think I would pass UNSW's elec eng at all.

Any knowledge on the workload and whether it's even easier than UNSW will also be much appreciated.

I'm not too obsessed over the social life and the like, pretty much just the employment outcomes.

General Question dropping unit.

Hi im currently considering dropping ANAT2004 because it is so hard. I'm a first year student and have never taken a anatomy class before. I have found the class to be so hard and takes up all the time I have for studying. I would prefer not to add time to my degree tho. I think I could pass but I dont want my WAM and GPA to be taken down because of the course.

General Question AI learning

Does anyone else have the subject "Evidence based practice in health"

It just seems wild to me that almost all of the resources are AI generated and there is severely limited engagement with the lecturers. For Macquarie to have such a large cohort since doing the pure online learning and have the same funding, if not even more, then off loading the work to AI is pretty abhorrent. All of my work this week is made by Ai with apparently some human input and no lectures or weekly forums. For a core unit of my degree it just seems like gross behaviour.

I have contacted my lecturer and they just seem to say we will consider your criticism. This unit has over 500 students and with that much funding I find it hard to accept that I don't deserve to receive some real time engagement with my learning, EVEN WITH OTHER STUDENTS. But this subject doesn't have places within the unit resources to communicate with anyone.

Maybe I am alone in this experience? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.

General Question full classes

basically i couldnt enrol in my units because of this issue i had with an anti-requisite clash, i applied for support from service connect and to this day they havent gotten back to me about it, so i took it in my own hands and enrolled in different units that i could actually enrol in because i had no more time before the sem started. and no surprise all the classes are full.

do i still have a chance at classes opening up? ik i should wait but im getting nervous since classes start next week and im unsure if they will. units im waiting on classes opening up are EDST1510 and EDST2530
