I also thought it was like “Hamlet”, like a start of the show, overly dramatic actor - ‘being a ham’ = silly way to say it’s like they think they’re starring as Hamlet6

When I was little I used to rest my head on my dad’s head-rest while we were in the car so I could see what he saw while he drove.
One day we were going to church, something happened and my dad had to step on the breaks, making me bash my face against the top of his head. One of my front teeth was loose and, sure enough, I lost it in the impact.
We spent a good 10 minutes looking for it before we gave up because we were late for church. My dad sat down, I went back to my usual spot and, what do I see?
The tooth was stuck right in the middle of my dad’s bald spot.
We laughed so hard that day. One of my favorite memories with him. I miss him.

It’s highly recommended that kids take their own tooth out. But if it takes too long the new tooth is starting to really grow in, a dentist gets involved, which can be traumatic. These parents tried to make a necessary thing into something fun, but still something that had to be done. Parenting can not always be sunshine and rainbows, no matter how perfect the parent.
13
u/moonchylde 22h ago
I had one that got loose, turned sideways and then grew new roots.
Dentist didn't believe it, until he had a nurse pin me down in the chair while he yanked on my tooth by a string with no numbing. Because I was only about 7 or 8 and he was pulling so hard I was unable to sit still. Yay.

I remember being bored in class one day because adhd at around 6 years old. So I started fidgeting with a tooth I hadn't even registered as lose yet. It fell out in the middle of class of course.
23
u/Awkward-Amount-2211 23h ago
Same, but autism and adhd combo. And also my tooth wasn't loose when I started. Blood poured from my face in the middle of story time. The poor librarian looked up just in time to see the blood waterfalling from my mouth. Very dramatic looking. Highlight of first grade.

I found the wiggling tooth annoying as a kid. And some parents worry that the tooth will come out while they're eating and choke them. Kids don't want to risk swallowing it in their sleep and missing out on that sweet sweet tooth fairy money. There's a bunch of reasons.
15
u/GrumpyMcGrumpyPants 1d ago
Can confirm: I found it annoying and I'd get anxious about swallowing it accidentally and losing out on toothfairy loot.
15
u/pwu1 19h ago
When my SIL was, like, 6? They had two loose teeth and someone explained to them “hey like this’ll happen to every single tooth in your mouth” so that same afternoon they slammed their entire face on the metal bar in the shower and knocked like, 9 teeth out all at once rather than deal with some of them being wiggly later.

u/ChronicNull 19h ago
I vividly remember having one of my final teeth just hanging by a thread of tissue or whatever for a week, it hurt too much to pull out at the time. Looking back i can only imagine how funny i looked with a tooth just dangling 😂😂😂
8
u/Inside_Location_4975 20h ago edited 19h ago
That’s what I meant by fall out on their own, as opposed to tying a string around it so they can apply a stronger force somehow to pull it out much earlier than it would fall out naturally through fidgetting
12
u/sonnackrm 19h ago
A nerf gun or a kitten are considered a strong force to you?
3
u/Inside_Location_4975 19h ago
Honestly I was actually surprised by how little force they seemed to use here, this post just made me think of other things I’ve seen online like for example where they tied a string to someones tooth and then got someone else to pull really hard. I just used this post as a place to ask that question
3
u/Nani_the_F__k 18h ago
It's usually less about the actual force and more about the suddenness. People are scared to pull it out but also it's time to come out. Usually it's just a little fun not like actually yanking out a tooth that isn't ready
21
u/IveDunGoofedUp 1d ago
I'm Dutch and did this as well. Hell, when one was a bit loose but just wouldn't come out, my dad broke out the old multitool and just yoinked it out.
18
u/blackflame000 1d ago
Im an American with Caribbean mother, Asian paternal grandmother, and Dutch wife (yes I have heard tons of jokes about how the men of my bloodline prefer foreign made.)
My grandmother used the string on the door method, my mother and her siblings all had their teeth pulled with tools from his shop (mechanic), and my wife and her brother, after she got impatient how slow he was tying the string to the door, pulled out his tooth which started a thing between them where they both pulled each others teeth that way.
I had a friend who said his family used mochi but I could never verify that and he was prone to telling a good story but not always a true store

My daughter absolutely hated the sensory feeling of having a wiggly tooth. She wanted it out of her head as soon as possible.
6
u/Potential-Cover7120 22h ago
Me too! After my dad painstakingly pulled a very loose tooth because I couldn’t stand how it felt, the minute I felt a wiggly tooth I would ask him to pull it. Of course he would make me wait until it was ready but I just wanted it out of my mouth ASAP
2
u/TzarCoal 22h ago
I was the complete opposite. Strangely i loved it honestly. I would rock it back and forth and play with them with my tongue. I didn't mind the slight pain because i could control it. I would push it with my tongue till it really got uncomfortable and then wait a bit and the next time i would do it again but try to go a bit further. I also remember that i tried to build a mental map where the tooth is loose and what direction to push could me most effective. My parents never had to resort to any string pulling they all came loose just by me messing with them. Its sounds bizarre but i can distinctly remember the feeling of it and i am in my late 20s. I honestly miss it.

I loved ripping my teeth out. I love picking at things and I'm very fidgety and ripping out that tooth is very satisfying. Its like popping and skin picking. I know I sound like a freak because I am one 😔
5
u/Shady-Pines_Ma 22h ago
First child pulled all of their teeth as soon as possible. Second child still has a baby tooth and hes 15 (the roots havent dissolved and it isnt causing issues so the dentist wants to leave it). He had to have the majority of his baby teeth taken out by the dentist because they were in the way of his adult teeth and causing issues. I didnt make it a big deal with them. Third child hasn't lost a tooth yet. I'm curious which side he will fall on.

3
u/Kevlar_Bunny 22h ago
Sometimes they come out at bad times. I lost one during a skittles eating contest in fourth grade. My mouth was full of skittles and I had to plead with my eyes that something happened. The parent in charge seemed to get the hint quickly.
3
u/Either-Patience1182 12h ago
To be fair, if a kitten pulling the string pulled it out, it was ready and probably just annoying the kid a ton.
3
u/BUYMECAR 8h ago edited 8h ago
Hmm African parents just yanked them out against your will. Teeth are likely to fall out while eating and no one wants to dig around the communal platter looking for a tooth
2
2
u/UpbeatDurian7628 23h ago
At least in some cases, the tooth starts to bother them from the looseness. It makes it harder to eat depending on how many and which teeth, and removing it quickly just becomes better for long term comfort. At least those are the only ones I pulled out this way.

I'm fairly confident that tooth was ready to come out.
They only advise against that when it still has roots, if its freely moving around or can be yanked out by a cat tugging on it its fine.
This is mentally easier for alot of people than using their tongue to slowly pop it out or pulling on it themselves.

Does anyone else remember being scared of the last tiny sensation of a baby tooth coming out? I was fine with wiggling it for however many days, but by the time it was hanging out by a thread of gum, I was scared to have it pulled out by one of my parents. It wasn't painful for more than a half of a second, but I always thought it would hurt.

People saying oh just let teeth fall out, the reason we pull them is because if you are an anxious child like me, you wont even chew where they are or brush too vigorously in order to keep them in. It damaged my adult front teeth cause I avoided letting the baby ones out. Normally my teeth would just come out while biting fruit lol.

I remember losing my first baby teeth. My dad had fun for hours, chasing me with the biggest pair of pliers you ever saw with a maniacal smile on his face.
I was terrified it would hurt, and that size of the pliers was absurd to me but scary none the less.
Eventually he tied a string to it from the door and scared me to run away. I didn't even notice it got plucked out.
I'm 44 now, and sure it sounds like it was really traumatic for a 5yr old but I look back on it fondly.
My dad loved any reason to mess with us and we talked about his shenanigans for hours at his memorial.

Tie some floss around the tooth, tie the other end to the doorknob, & slam the door

I remember my parents tying my brother's loose tooth to our childhood dog's collar and then throwing the ball for her. This video unlocked that memory and made me realize that pulling a kid's loose tooth is a family's unique opportunity to bond over some creative strategizing. What a slightly strange and very specific but likely fairly common childhood experience 😂
