Activism/Support Registration for the draft becomes automatic this December. Hundreds of people have told me itβs wrong, but almost none will act.
Don't feel like reading? Skip to the bottom of the post (it's most important.)
In the US, men are told at 18 that they have to register for the draft or face consequences, and women are told nothing while they receive the benefits men can lose if they disobey. In Ukraine, there are men who arenβt allowed to leave the country, and recruitment officers have been grabbing men off the street and forcing them into vans. Most people I talk to agree that this is unfair and some are even furious about it. Yet still...all that energy goes nowhere, because everyoneβs waiting for someone else to handle it.
Because of this, Iβve felt utterly hopeless. Iβve spoken to hundreds of people trying to find someone who cares enough to actually take action and even reached out to people who have done things on their own. I found next to nobody.
Still, I refuse to give up because of how important this issue is to me. I joined Men's Equality Network because despite being a small, volunteer-run nonprofit with basically zero funding, they are completely dedicated to ending male-only conscription worldwide.
This December, the government is switching to automatic draft registration for men. Right now, men at least have to actively register themselves. If it becomes automatic and most people stop thinking about it, that will set back so much progress. We need to make noise before that happens and this is an opportunity that will not return again.
MENetwork is US-based and putting everything into the US right now, since December is the deadline and because people pay attention to this country. What the US does has historically influenced the action other countries take.
If you can dedicate even just 2 hours a week until December, you can actually make a difference and do more than the vast majority of people. Youβd only be helping with what you're comfortable with doing (writing, research, content making, outreach, etc.), and you can even use a nickname or be as private as you want.
If youβve ever read a post like this and thought βsomeone should really do something,β Iβm asking you to be the someone. You can genuinely be that person today. There's a volunteer form you can fill out right now, and it only takes a couple of minutes of your life to apply:
https://forms.gle/UWGq34ToSxptB1aC8 (their email is listed on the form in case you want to answer the questions via email instead...if you want to be even more cautious, you can request their ProtonMail address to send your answers to)
Website if you want to look them over first: https://mensequality.org/
I can answer any questions in the comments, or you can email them directly ([menetwork@mensequality.org](mailto:menetwork@mensequality.org)). There is also an inquiry submission option on their website.
