Discussion AOTY so far
For me definitely "a stranger to you" by the band loathe, I keep coming back to it oh my god!

either Boundaries or 156/Silence personally

u/algatorr 22d ago
That new 156/Silence officially made me a fan
27
u/5hitting_4sshole 22d ago
Bro for some reason I thought they were like…idk beatdown or something? Not that I’d have an issue with that, but that album was sick and unique and I guess I just had never given them a chance because I didn’t realize they sounded like that.
→ More replies (1)11
u/DisasterOD 22d ago
I think they started more beatdown/hardcore and have progressed into this more experimental metal sound as each album has released. I feel like they really started experimenting with the MC sound in ‘People watching’ and when they realized that people really fucked with their clean vocals it gave them the green light to progress into ‘From a distance’s’ sound

I’ve been a fan of theirs since 2020 when Irrational Pull dropped, every release has topped the last imo

u/RevenantCommunity 22d ago
It’s Injury Episode from Static Dress for me.
A Stranger to You by Loathe is close.
I am a bigger fan of Boundaries but to me that record didn’t do anything they haven’t done before- same for 156/Silence.
Static Dress had some insane quality songs on that album (Treading and human props are incredible), Loathe really tried some different stuff and did well.

Boundaries album has already taken over as my most streamed of the year and I heard of them for the first time like a week after it dropped. Incredible album.

u/DaWeavey 22d ago
Gotta be either ERRA or Boundaries. Also can’t forget Karmanjakah
35
u/wbruce098 22d ago
ERRA’s Silence Outlives the Earth is fucking phenomenal. I got to see them live right after its release, too, which admittedly made it better.
But it’s nice that Loathe finally released another album this year! Listening now and it’s pretty good.

Above, Below
18
u/Oliver_Biscuit 22d ago
This album wasn't even on my radar until it dropped. Was for sure thinking my AOTY was gonna be Boundaries or Loathe, but man, I Guess It Was Nowhere is flawless.
14
27
u/Friends513 22d ago
Not even a question. ERRA gets pretty close, but I Guess It Was Nowhere is so unbelievably dense that it’s kept me replaying it way more than I otherwise would
17
u/Synystermuskrat 22d ago
I swear I listened to it all the way through twice a day for like 60 days in a row after it came out. My wife surprise bought me the vinyl too which was awesome as I live in Canada and the shipping wasn’t cheap
→ More replies (2)5
u/d4rth_r4ider 22d ago
Same here, it’s still on near daily rotation and I had to buy the vinyl regardless of cost. AOTY and maybe album of the decade for me.
18
u/zangor 22d ago
Erra SOTE seems like such a no brainer choice for AOTY. …if the Above, Below album didn’t exist.
10
u/Synystermuskrat 22d ago
Some great albums this year for sure.
I have The Gloom in the Corner, Boundaries, Loathe, What Lies Below, 156/Silence, Varials, Banks Arcade, Static Dress, concealer., all on regular rotation as well20

u/wbruce098 22d ago
ERRA just keeps improving. And they started off good. They’re amazing live (much more confident today than a few years ago) and their releases are consistently phenomenal. They might be my favorite band ever. It feels like everyone works their ass off to up their game, which is not common.

Hands down. So much good stuff this year but I just keep coming back to it over and over. To be fair, I beat CURE to a pulp and it got stale but somehow SOTE has been in my daily rotation and somehow it just gets better.

This is still my pick. The Wage War singles have both been heaters, but i didn't think their album will match the depth and complexity of ERRA. I think WW will be my favorite album to blast at the gym.

Shortlist so far is:
No Cure - It Is Going To Get Dark
Temple Guard - Citadel In Flames
A Winter's Remorse - The Day Our Gods Abandoned Us
Roman Candle - Unadulterated
Converge - Love Is Not Enough
Varials - Where The Light Leaves
Living Weapon - Death In The Family
Soulprison - The More I See, The More I Bleed
Burner's record literally came out today, so probably a bit early, but it's going to come into contention I'm sure.

Really close right now between Converge - Love is Not Enough and Boundaries - Yearning. Just got done listening to Burner - No One is Coming to Save Us, and holy shit it's definitely gonna be a contender. It scratches a very specific itch, and I can already tell I'm gonna be spending a lot of time with that album in the coming days.
Not metalcore, but the new Neurosis and Sigh albums are strong contenders for me also.
7
u/ThatOneBitch02 22d ago
Insane I had to scroll over 30 comments just to find a single mention of Converge, especially with a lot of those comments not even being metalcore (not even being gatekeepy, just straight up not metalcore)
Also Neurosis was an incredible surprise

I won't say BMTH since it's a remaster (but bloody hell it's so so good...)
So either Protest the Hero or Don Broco, the lyrics on both are just amazing

Don Broco easily right now. What a fun and unique record! True Believers is probably my most listened to song this year.
Northlane is on track to take that title though, all three singles have been some of my favorite material they've ever done. Windwaker and Wage War still have albums I'm really looking forward to also, and I still gotta listen to the new Holding Absence record, so we'll see what happens a month from now.

So I’m not going to sit on the fence. So it’s got to be
156 Silence From a Distance
Coming close Top Tier: ABR, Periphery, Erra, LMTF (EP)
Great: Showing Teeth, Fallweather, Iridium, Banks Arcade
Really liked: Gaerea, Static Dress, Midwinter, Beartooth, Antimere.
Solid: Holding Absence
I think this is all the full albums I listened to this year.

i LOVE both albums but i rate 156 higher too, i feel like i had to manage my expectations with Loathe after ILIIAITE cuz that was just flawless front to back, so i wanted to be happy with whatever they put out bc there’s really no way to really live up to that project imo. but 156 i had high expectations after People Watching and they fully blew em out of the water.
