Question What was your first Metroid that you FINISHED?
Mine was Zero Mission because i wanted to play Dread, but wanted the whole story so i started from the start. Followed by Samus Returns, Super, Fusion and finally Dread. It was an awesome journey!

u/Nayld_it Jun 07 '26
Fusion. Cemented its place in my heart at 10 years old. I have a SA-X tattoo over my heart now.
12
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jun 07 '26
That game blew me away in middle school. Sitting on the porch with my GBA SP just exploring, running from the SA-X, then finally ending that bitch felt so good.
And then linked to Prime and thought that was really cool
3
u/Nayld_it Jun 08 '26
I so wanted Prime but my little brother had the gamecube. It wasnt up to me what games we got. I played thru prime during covid with the wii-u controls which i actually loved.
2
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jun 08 '26
It was so much easier on the Wii lol. Adding the motion controls to 1 and 2 made fighting a breeze

u/Cattleist Jun 07 '26
Uhh.. Can we see it? Is it like a headshot or its sprite?

Same here, except I was maybe 8. I still have an entirely irrational fear of the SA-X, despite fucking with it every time I play through the game. Massive adrenaline dump every time it’s about to appear.

Metroid Prime on Game Cube, still my favourite Metroid game 👌 Great atmosphere in the dungeon where you get the x-ray vision and get harassed by Metroids 😅

Metroid Fusion. Was also my first Metroid game.
First Metroid that I 100%'d was Samus Returns, on my first playthrough actually. I was just very thorough when playing it, I suppose.

u/RandomParkourGuy Jun 07 '26
Fusion, not only my first Metroid but my first video game ever. Probably why I have the entire game seared into my memory.
8
u/BoonDragoon Jun 07 '26

Samus Returns on the 3DS
loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bought a switch because of Dread (consequence of the above)

Loved Samus Returns too, but Dread improved it on every aspect.
Samus Returns walked, so Dread could Flash Shift.
Hope they bring back the hunting idea some how.

Super Metroid on the Gameboy. I was floored when I finished it. It may have been the first game I ever completed.
3
u/B-random4 Jun 07 '26
Do you mean Metroid II: Return of Samus? Super is only on Snes
2
u/ElectronicDrama2573 Jun 07 '26
I do! Thank you for the correction. The SNES version (Super) would be the 2nd that I completed.
2
u/B-random4 Jun 07 '26
Nice, Return of Samus is the only 2D Metroid I have yet to play. But I am scared it would be to dated for me, especially since I already played Samus Returns.
2
u/ElectronicDrama2573 Jun 07 '26
It would be a hard playthrough on that green screen. We were just built different back then.
2
u/B-random4 Jun 07 '26
Yea, I'm sad I didn't had a GB(C) back then. But I finished Nestroid after Dread (with a guide) and also recently finished Super Mario Land. So I should just give Metroid II a go and see from there.

u/Ramblingperegrin Jun 07 '26
Prime 1 on GC, I'd literally never managed to actually encounter a copy of any of the others until then, or at least when I had the equipment to play it. I'd heard about how good they were and was so excited to get my hands on Prime, even though I didn't like FPS games.

u/Teamawesome2014 Jun 07 '26
Metroid Prime. It was my entry into the franchise as a small child watching my dad play through it. I started playing it after his playthrough, and at some point did beat it. I don't remember at what age I actually became capable of beating it, because all those years kinda blend together in my mind.

3
u/Owobowos-Mowbius Jun 07 '26
Fusion. Went back and played super metroid afterwards. Wasn't until much later that I got the whole prime series.

Started with Fusion, ragequit at Yakuza. Went to Prime, fell in love with the series after that, finished a new run of Fusion.
Then took a stab at the original NEStroid because I had the Gamecube bonuses.

Metroid - NES.
Finding everything eventually, I don’t really know how long it took me as I didn’t use a guide until after the first time I had really beaten the game. I had, of course, missed some stuff 😂 But I had owned the game for probably years before I properly beat it. I had played the game using JUSTIN BAILEY and beaten it that way, but that’s cheating 😂
2
u/B-random4 Jun 07 '26
It's a single-player game, as long as you have fun! And they didn't build in the code for nothing!
2
u/Motheroftides Jun 07 '26
These games have an ending?
The joke here being that even though I’ve played a number of Metroid games I still haven’t actually beaten any of them. I’ve gotten close though… I think.

Metroid II.
My friend had Super Metroid at the time and I wanted to feel involved, so I played through Metroid II.
I remember hanging out in the front porch while my babysitter watched TV during a thunderstorm, making my way through the later parts of the game with the light coming through the half opened door barely enough to see the original Game Boy screen.
I think my friend later let me borrow Super Metroid and then I was able to play through that. I didn't get my own copy until my late teens.
Metroid NES I never liked nearly as much, and even though I owned it back then as a kid, I never beat it until I was an adult and used a map I found online. Metroid NES is still my least favorite game in the series.
2
u/Mossysnail27 Jun 08 '26
Lets give it up for Prime hunters on DS, prime hunters on DS everyone, played the game on bots SO much that both L/R bumpers were merged into the frame. and the game itself was worn out from being inside constantly.
🐌
2
u/B-random4 Jun 08 '26
It was actually my first Metroid, but didn't finish, still haven't. Maybe i should finish it soon.
2
u/GuyWishPartakeViolen Jun 08 '26
That's a good question.
It was Dread. Like many, I wanted to play other Metroids before Dread and I found an emulator for Fusion, I got extremely far up until Nightmare but I just couldn't beat it with phone controls. So I just jumped into Dread after that. I still have to go back to Fusion tho.
2
u/B-random4 Jun 08 '26
If you have Dread, you have a Switch. Why not play on NSO? All 2D Metroid games are there except Samus Returns. It's much better controls than a phone(ofcourse) and also a lot more forgiving since you have a rewind feature!

Return of Samus. I was mesmerised by the weird chirping music and the feeling that I couldn’t describe at that time, which was isolation. I became instantly a fan of the series.

Super.
I started with Metroid Prime 2, technically, as I loved the multi-player as a kid, but I didn't beat any until I beat Super Metroid in middle school. I then went on to beat Prime and Prime 2 before Dread came out, and eventually beat Fusion after I had means to emulate it.
2
Jun 09 '26
Depends on your definition of FINISHED. Probably Metroid Prime.
For me: Beaten = Finished story and saw credits Completed = 100% and saw all endings Finished = Did not complete, but played as much as I want to

Then Prime 3, then Other M, then the Trilogy ports of 1, 2, and 3 in order, then Dread, Prime Remastered, and finally Prime 4.
One of these days I'm gonna knuckle down and actually play Super. One of these days.

I was 9 when a cousin gave me a gameboy advance with Metroid Fusion. I was stuck on the squid boss for two years until I found you can fire missiles into its rear end. Then I progressed to when the SA-X appears after the spider boss where I struggled for another 6 months.
Fusion is still my favorite. I even showed it to my oldest son recently who is 11!
1
u/HatAndHoodie_ Jun 07 '26
Zero Mission was the first I completed, then I tried to get into Samus Returns, but it felt too different from the classic 2D gameplay, so I went with AM2R instead, and I played Super Metroid (Redux rom hack for GBA-style controls) and then Fusion
I figure I'll go back to play Samus Returns before I get to Dread, since I hear its gameplay is a bit more similar to that one
1
u/Skooter26 Jun 07 '26
Fusion for me! The SA-X and Nightmare kinda terrified me back then, but I had to keep playing.
I had played Super when I was much younger, but always got lost and never finished it until way later, like the late 2000s when I played it again.

never had a NES, unfortunately, so my first Metroid played was also my first finished, Metroid 2 on the old gray brick itself, the original GameBoy

Nestroid with the Justin Bailey code. I was in elementary school. I never finished it for reals until much later on an emulator and more recently on the Switch. I think it’s better than most people give it credit for.

u/Raetekusu Jun 07 '26
Fusion was the first Metroid I owned, so it was the first one I finished. I can remember the full order.
After that, Super. Then Zero Mission, then the original, then Prime. Then AM2R, then Samus Returns, then Dread, then Prime 4. Never played ROS, Hunters, 2, 3, FF, or Other M, and (sadly) not Pinball either.

Dread. I had played multiple metroid games in the past but never got fully invested. Metroid Dread came out at the perfect time as I was getting more into Metroidvanias
1
u/Dessorian Jun 07 '26
Oof. Time to get technical.
I "beat" super first, but only because I got it used when I was like 6-8 and there was a save file in Tourian. Between getting lost too much and siblingly favouring deleting only MY save files, I never got around to beating it until much later.
But the first one I finished front to back was Metroid Prime back when it first released on the Gamecube, and probably the most influential game of my childhood.

Metroid Other M, I was like 10-12. I honestly don't know who bought it for me. I wasn't even into Metroid but I used to be able to finish games 1 at a time without much thought. Tbh I don't remember much about it, just thought it was silly that upgrades were obtained by Adam's permission. The gameplay was unique, I didn't care that it was considered bad.
