Discussion Metroid dread any good?
I’ve never played any 2D Metroid games. I recently played Metroid Prime Remastered and Prime 4 Beyond. I gotta say I liked them both. I did play the Metroid Dread’s Demo a few years back but couldn’t get into it. Today I was in a game shop and saw a lonely copy just sitting there so I decided to pull the trigger. Got a nice discount as well. Anyway, what do you guys think about this game? Is it any good? I remember it reviewed well but some players didn’t like it too much. So not sure what to think.

I really prefer Metroid games to be side scrollers. So I was really happy when this came out.

faur warning though, Dread is good but it does have a story that wraps up plot threads from the prior games. if you want the least froction getting familiar with the story the recommended titles go Metroid: Zero mission (gba remake of the first game), Metroid 2: Sam's Returns (its a 3ds remake of the gameboy original, thought if you dont have a 3ds the original is playable on switch it just feels clunky compared to the modern titles), Super Metroid (snes game), Metroid Fusion (gba game), and then Dread. All of these titles hsve some version available on switch 1 and 2

One of the best games I’ve ever played. No exaggeration

It is easily one of the best games I’ve played. Fantastic difficulty balance, great exploration and lore expansion, and it turned one of the “creators” of God of War in to a joke and proved he can no more play games than he can write them.

The EMMI mechanic is really off putting at first, or it was to me, but I came around to it and eventually didn’t mind it. If you’re just looking to complete the game it’s about 10-20 hours depending how well you adapt. I got about a solid 40 hours of it.
It definitely has replayability for sequence breaking and its different modes. All around fantastic game, if not a bit challenging at first
The weakest part of the game compared to other metroids is the OST. It’s not the best or most atmospheric, most of the time, it’s kinda just there
3
u/Kikisilvania Aug 22 '26
I believe I didn’t like the EMMI in the demo, but still willing to give it a chance. Some people also didn’t like them. Apparently the music is disappointing to many people. Too bad
→ More replies (3)3
u/Environmental_Bag_10 Aug 22 '26
EMMI are the best part of the game in my opinion. Especially when you get to defeat them by melting their faces off. It’s rewarding getting through their zones. Once you learning the timing you will be able to free yourself if caught. You will have 2 chances to escape them. Flash shift is by far the most useful technique to avoid Bosses as well.

Literally the only area in which Dread isn't fantastic is the soundtrack.
It's kinda mid in that regard. Serviceable, but nothing as memorable and soulful as previous games in the series.
It's peak in literally every other regard tho. Maybe not /the/ peak of the series, but close enough that philosophers will continue to debate whether it's better than Metroid Prime 1 or not for generations.

Very good
The movement is amazing.
I've 100% the game twice, the first time very slowly due to inexperience (It's kinda hard) and the second time quite fast (it was still hard but I didn't get lost or fail jumps nearly as much)
My only complaint is that they haven't made another modern 2D metroid yet and maybe power creep ruining the horror aspect later on

It is a great game, but to me, I thought it was lacking in atmosphere. Not completely lacking mind you, it's there, but just not to the level which other Metroid titles have provided. Which is my favorite part about this series of games.
I also didn't find the music to be memorable at all, which may or may not matter to you.
Just my two cents.
8
u/Ikrit122 Aug 22 '26
The music is definitely the weak point. I don't like constant ambient music (looking at you, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom), and Metroid's music has always been fantastic.

Definitely recommend playing. I missed out on Prime, Fusion and even Metroid Samus Returns remake. MercurySteam really did a great job with Dread and that addressed my fix for a metroidvania title (my original fav was Super Metroid). Loved the gameplay, map, control.
You really get a feeling of dread when you're being stalked by E.M.M.I robots and gets your adrenaline pumping. My main gripe was the final boss battle - I couldn't get past that guy
Best of luck!

Metroid Dread is one of my favorite games of all time.
Here are my current favorite Metroidvania games
Symphony of the night
Ori and The Will Of The Wisps
Hollow Knight
Metroid Dread
Bo Path Of The Teal Lotus
Something like that?
Still a bit unsure
Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread are almost interchangeable.
Dread got me hooked and I found myself wanting to play more and more. It was one of the first games that made me want to play more like that. I beat prime 1 first and then did this and enjoyed dread so much.

Dread is like a 8.5/10 game for me and I say that to mean it's CRAZY good. It's right up there but below Super & Zero Mission (and probably Fusion) for me, but who cares they're all great games. Dread has all ingredients that make Metroid games great. Cool atmosphere, great (difficult for me) boss battles, good level design where you won't get lost or turned around too much. I personally just don't like the reliance on the parry mechanic to trigger item collection, more damage to bosses, etc. In fact I hate it lol. It would be fine if parry was an option to block attacks, but I prefer to jump and position myself better, but the game doesn't really reward that like it does parry. I hope that makes sense. Still great game. Try it out!

Its fine, not a masterpiece, at all but enjoyable, around the same mark as Fusion and Samus Returns (the remake). Below Super and Zero Mission. It has a more action focus so you are into that you'll enjoy it, if you like the sequence breaking of Super and Zero there is also a bit of that but not as open saddly, the story isn't as good as Fusion despite being a direct sequel.

Not bad but it break what a metroidvania should be with soft locks hand holding you unless you sequence break, it kill exploration focus at times with some pursuits and so on ...
To be fair, it barely sit on the middle bar of what could be done, they missed a massive opportunity leaving a developper being hired for Ori games instead. (AM2R fan game developper)
Music is a big miss, it's not even the half of what it should be.

Dread is easily in the upper tier.
To the point that people can safely debate on if it's the best the series has seen.
Personally for me, the boss battle design, boss HP Sponge bars, and the EMMIs really hold the game back, otherwise it could have easily of been my personal favorite of the series.
Even with these gripes, I view it in the upper end of the tier list.

As the famed AkiWar put it, it's literally Fusion 2! It greatly follows up on Fusion in terms of story, gameplay, exploration, and other things. I never found the EMMIs to be scary; rather, they were more like cat-and-mouse chases. The only disappointing things about it were the final area and the music. But besides that, it's very replayable. What I like about the score, however, are the leitmotifs and cues from Metroid II, Super Metroid, and Fusion's soundtracks. The Map Station theme even has some notes from Arcterra's first theme in Metroid Prime: Hunters.
