Election Milton 2026 Municipal Election Megathread: How to Vote, Candidates, and Discussion

Milton's municipal election is Monday, October 26, 2026. This megathread will address the many opinionated election postings, so that they can be expressed in one condensed posting. This thread is the place for general election discussion on r/Milton. Comment default sort has been set to "New".

Use this thread for: discussing candidates and their platforms, sharing who you're voting for and why, and asking how voting works. Disagree with the idea, not the person.

Standalone posts are still allowed for news articles, candidate debate announcements, new developments with a link to a source, and sourced posts about a specific local issue (use the Election flair). Other election posts will be removed and redirected here.

How to vote

  • Advance voting: Oct. 12 to 15, at any advance location
  • Election Day: Mon, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at any polling station in your ward
  • Vote by mail: mail your kit by Oct. 15, or drop it off at Town Hall by 8 p.m. on Oct. 26

Locations, hours, proxy voting, and full details: Town of Milton voter information

Who can vote: Canadian citizens 18+ who live in Milton, or who (or whose spouse) own or rent property here.

Bring: one document showing your name and Milton address. A driver's licence is the most common, but it doesn't need a photo, so a utility bill, bank statement, or lease also works. Health cards usually don't show your address, so bring something that does. See Accepted ID.

Not on the voters' list, or want to check? You can be added at the polls with that same ID. Check the list

Election signs are dangerous

• Upvotes

I was out driving Saturday morning and making a turn left, after leaving the plaza from La Rose bakery, the sign there by one of the candidates literally prevents you from seeing oncoming traffic if you're not in an SUV or high car. Me in my Toyota Corolla, not so lucky. Almost got into an accident because I wasn't able to see a car coming my way with that damn sign blocking view. Was so angry after a near death incident I almost tore down all the signs but didn't want to be confronted by a random passerby and have to explain context when visibly upset, so just drove on.

But I am very worries for others leaving that plaza and getting into accidents.

Candidates must have limits on how big their signs can be and more importantly where they can place them! it's NOT going to make me vote for you if your damn sign almost kills me!

Rant over

Election Concerning behavior regarding a political figure

I wanted to share an experience I recently had with Arthur, who is involved in Milton’s local politics.

One evening, while I was out walking, Arthur approached me and asked me to accept one of his campaign flyers.

I politely declined.

Rather than simply accepting my response, he became defensive and questioned whether I even knew what a town councillor was.

I found the interaction unnecessary and condescending. Residents should be able to politely decline campaign materials without feeling pressured to explain themselves.

Later, a campaign flyer was left at my front door, despite a clearly displayed sign stating that political canvassing, advertising, and salespeople are not welcome.

I subsequently commented on Arthur’s Instagram page about my experience and concerns.

My comment was deleted.

While I recognize that candidates can moderate their social media accounts, I was disappointed that my criticism was removed rather than addressed.

I’m sharing this because I believe respectful communication and openness to feedback are important in local politics.

I’m curious whether other Milton residents have experienced similar interactions with political canvassers.

TL;DR: Politely declined a campaign flyer during an evening walk, experienced what I felt was a defensive response, later received campaign material despite a posted notice, and had my Instagram comment about the experience deleted.

Complaint Car speeding and almost losing control in neighbourhood

Saturday, 11:57PM, on Bennett street, there was a black suv with no car light speeding like crazy and almost lost control in front of the stop sign next to the entrance of Kennedy circle. I was walking and saw it happen but couldn’t get the license plate number because they had no car lights. A minute after it can back and was still speeding.

For awareness purposes. If anyone has footage please send it to halton police. Protect our neighborhoods and communities, this is unacceptable.

Hi ladies!! I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for someone who can do my hair for an upcoming wedding? I am a wedding guest and would like to treat myself to getting my hair done. I’m newer to the area so really not sure what options are available.

I’m open to travelling to surrounding areas as well if you have no suggestions in Milton (Think Mississauga, Brampton, Guelph, Caledon, etc) I’ve attached an inspiration photo for reference.

How Azim Rizvee (Zainab Azim’s father) harassed and tried to financially ruin a journalist

Thumbnail canadianmedialawyers.com
140 Upvotes

I've heard little bits and pieces of the scandal here and there, but never the full story, so I thought I'd put it all together here.

This is all taken from a Court document seeking to dismiss the lawsuit Azim Rizvee filed against the journalist, Stacey Newman. A judge later approved the dismissal.

The story takes place during the 2015 federal election campaign. Azim Rizvee was running as the Liberal candidate after defeating Zeeshan Hamid for the Liberal candidacy.

Stacey Newman is a freelance photojournalist. She held a leadership role in a political group called “Milton Says No” (“MSN”). The objective of the group was to oppose the construction of a rail yard that CN Rail was planning to build in Milton. Ms. Newman was also a part of Zeeshan Hamid's campaign team.

The whole drama started when Mr. Rizvee tried to get MSN to support his political campaign, but Ms. Newman and MSN rejected his request. Despite this, Mr. Rizvee falsely claimed publicly that he was a part of MSN. It’s unclear exactly what happened afterwards but Mr. Rizvee and Ms. Newman seemed to be in a conflict.

After this, supporters of Mr. Rizvee started to taunt and harass Ms. Newman outside the campaign offices of Zeeshan Hamid. They told her to “respect Azim” and that she did not “belong in the community.” On one occasion, a supporter physically prevented her from entering the building.

Ms. Newman started to publicly document instances of these harassments on her Facebook page. This just led to more tension between Mr. Rizvee, his supporters, and Ms. Newman.

On July 16, 2015, CN Rail hosted an open house event to discuss the proposed rail yard. When Mr. Rizvee saw Ms. Newman at this event he attempted to hug her. Ms. Newman stated that she made it clear to him that she did not want him to touch her, but that he forced her into a hug in any event. Later that evening, when she was participating in a discussion with the media, Mr. Rizvee suddenly appeared at her side.

On August 23 and 24, 2015, MSN set up a pavilion at the Milton Ribfest to discuss the CN rail yard issue with the public. Ms. Newman affirmed that Mr. Rizvee attended the MSN pavilion and touched her, standing close to her as she spoke to people. Ms. Newman told Mr. Rizvee to stop touching her, to no avail.

On September 30, 2015, Ms. Newman attended the Milton candidates’ debate for the Federal Election. After the debate, Mr. Rizvee saw Ms. Newman and approached her, backing her into a desk that was behind her. He then grabbed Ms. Newman’s forearm. Ms. Newman told him to let her go. At this point, a colleague of Ms. Newman, George Soltysik, intervened to tell Mr. Rizvee that this was “enough” and that he should leave her alone.

After the debate. Ms. Newman was in the near-empty parking lot just outside of the facility that hosted the debate. She was with Mr. Soltysik. Suddenly a car drove up. It pulled to a stop in front of Ms. Newman and a man got out of the car and aggressively walked towards her. He yelled at her, calling her by name and telling her that he was “going to teach her some manners”. This frightened Ms. Newman. Mr. Soltysik stepped in front of this man to protect Ms. Newman. The man who approached Ms. Newman was Haroon Butt, a member of Mr. Rizvee's campaign. That night, Ms. Newman reported this event to the police. The police suggested that she seek a peace bond.

The Federal Election occurred on October 19, 2015. Mr. Rizvee lost to incumbent Conservative, Lisa Raitt.

Despite the election being over, Ms. Newman remained fearful of Mr. Rizvee and sought a peace bond against him. On November 2, 2015, she followed the advice of the Halton police and filed the paperwork to obtain the peace bond.

On March 11, 2016, the same day as the peace bond hearing, Mr. Rizvee posted an open letter on Facebook, wherein he advised the public that Ms. Newman would be “held to account”. Less than a week later, on March 17, Mr. and Mrs. Rizvee served Ms. Newman with a $17.5 million claim, largely for defamation.

It is obvious to me that the lawsuit was filed by the ultra-wealthy Azim Rizvee in an attempt to harm Stacey Newman financially. Obviously upset from his loss, he was looking to take his wrath out on someone he probably blamed for his defeat. She was not as rich and powerful as him and he was attempting to use our legal system as a weapon against someone who fought back against the bullying attempts of him and his team.

I'm not telling you what to think about Azim Rizvee's daughter Zainab Azim, who is now running for mayor. I just think it's important to know that if she wins, her father is going to have a very prominent role in the government of our town. How do you think he will handle criticisms her daughter faces as mayor? He doesn't seem like the type of guy who would sit down and listen to all sides of the issues and try to come to a compromise. Instead, he will domineer his way, send his thugs to intimidate those who use their freedom of speech to criticize his daughter, and try to ruin them financially.

Election day is 10 days away.

Question Restaurants suggestions

Hi everyone! 😊

Looking for some good restaurant recommendations in Milton for dinner and lunch the next day!

We'll be driving from London after work, so we're hoping for somewhere casual, cozy, and comfortable enough to show up in sweatpants nothing too fancy!

We're open to pretty much any cuisine, but would especially love to try local hidden gems or unique spots rather than the usual chains.

We mostly prefer chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options (not big on red meat or pork).

Would love your recommendations for both a nice dinner spot and somewhere worth trying for lunch the next day. Thanks in advance! ❤️

Election Sameera Ali - 8 years in (now make me the Mayor)

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is a review of her past 8 years with factual numbers and her recorded votes.

She has been on the council since 2018, regional councillor since 2022, also sits on the Halton Police Board (impressive but.... I went through 8 years of her record, her website, and her big plan document - yes I did that, here's what I found.

The good stuff first:

• Her platform is the most detailed while most candidates posted vibes: sameeraali.ca/my-platform.

• She knows how things work, 8 years of real experience

• Played a key role in getting the Allendale assisted housing project through. Real win, credit to her !

Now the rest.

  1. The 9.89% tax hike in 2025 was promoted by her as a good news story Link: Sameera Ali proud of 2025 tax increase

Now on her site (sameeraali.ca/my-priorities) she is all about "keeping Milton affordable" and "not passing unnecessary costs onto residents." Hmmm maybe this much of an increase is not a big deal, right Sameera?

I pulled every vote with her name on it from our town's record of committee meetings. Yes I did the work and you are welcome to check.

Dec 2019 - 2020 budget, 5.63% increase - She voted Yes

Dec 2021- 2022 budget, 5.46% increase - She voted Yes

Dec 2022 - 2023 budget, 7.99% increase - She voted Yes

Dec 2023 - 2024 budget, 9.88% increase - She voted Yes

Dec 2024 - 2025 budget, 9.89% increase - She voted Yes

Sep 2025 - ARU (see below)- She was the only one against it

Dec 2025 - $1M spending cut -She was against the cut

Five budget increases in a row, all yes. A $1M cut comes up, she votes against the cut. I don't know how that translates to fighting for affordability, maybe she does.

  1. 8 years. "Real results" based on the attached graphics on her LinkedIn. It shows a lot of numbers, that's good but if I do the math on the 16,640 hours of service over 8 years, it comes out to be exactly 2,080 a year. A full 40-hour week, 52 weeks a year, zero holidays, eight years straight! Wow now that's dedication or someone just forget to make it look real on the LinkedIn post.

  2. The ARU thing. Worth reading!

ARUs are basement apartments, in-law suites. Town passed a by-law forcing every ARU owner to register and get reinspected. Even people whose units were built to code, inspected, approved, years ago. Retroactive.

Homeowners were obviously not happy about that.

So council votes on an amendment to fix the worst of it: grandfather the existing legal units, give people more time, hold a proper info session before enforcement.

Rest was Six councillors say yes. She says no. Only one.

While her current platform says "faster approvals for affordable housing."

On paper she's the housing candidate, but when homeowners with legal basement suites needed relief from retroactive paperwork, she said "No". Make of that what you will.

  1. I read her whole "Made in Milton Plan" from her website. It opens with "Milton doesn't need more promises that sound good on paper." Then 11 sections of paper promises with zero dollar figures.

Free transit for low-income seniors, windrow clearing programs, a new small business office, activity centres, trade roadshows. Not one cost attached to anything.

The affordability candidate's plan spends on every page and prices nothing. I guess you and I will pay for it, maybe we should, afterall we all have a money tree in our backyards.

One section is literally headered "Keeping Taxes Low." From someone who voted for five straight tax hikes ? Eight years as Council members, files for mayor now, suddenly she's the affordability candidate. I'm sure it's a coincidence.

The ARU section of her plan says "I brought a motion to protect them. Council rejected it." Check the minutes!

The grandfathering amendment was moved by Challinor. She voted against it. She moved the procedural motion to allow the discussion, then voted NO on the actual protection.

  1. After 8 years she should knows exactly what a mayor can do so why is her promising inter-regional transit "built with Oakville and regional partners" (they have to say yes), GO bus hubs and train expansion (that's Metrolinx), bringing a university to Milton (ummm the Province and Laurier / Conestoga already had a plan and were executing before she came on as a councillor).

  2. Her own website promises nothing. Go read her priorities: affordability, safety, planned growth, reliable services... "real results".

Not a single number. Not a timeline. Not one specific thing she'll do, cut, or change. It's vague enough that everyone nods along and it opens with "Milton has changed and people are feeling it every day." She's right. She's also been on council for the entire 8 years it changed while she voted on those changes, now she has a fix for everything.

Bottom line: she is experienced, has a detailed platform, a real housing win.

Also yes votes to tax increases (multiple years) zero restraint votes in 8 years, a lone no vote against basement apartment owners and now she is asking for the Mayor's job so she can bring "REAL RESULTS". I guess all those votes were not real.

Anyone playing badminton locally in Milton? Looking for hitting partners / drop-in group

Hey everyone! 👋

Moving into the indoor season, I've been trying to find local people to play badminton with regularly here in Milton.

A few of us have been organizing casual drop-in sessions and court times at local spots like the Milton Sports Centre and Leisure Centre, but we’re always looking to meet more local players of different skill levels.

If anyone is trying to find regular hitting partners or wants to join a local group chat for weekend/evening games, drop a comment or shoot me a DM!

Would love to connect with other players in the area. 🏸
Thank you admin for approving the post and help.

This guy's motive is just engagement farming and get famous through his sickening campaign. All of his campaign material and all comments/replies on his Facebook are autogenerated by AI. I would urge everyone not to engage, even a disqualification will give him the opportunity of stating that they disqualified me because they knew that I am going to win.

He needs a psychiatric treatment. He has always proven himself "skunk at the garden party"

Complaint The state of our healthcare system

Post image
72 Upvotes

I'm honestly in shock. My wife is in excruciating pain and is only 7 days postpartum. I took her to Milton Hospital's Emergency Room and I checked that it said it is roughly 3 hours to see a doctor. We've been here for 3 hours waiting on a preliminary blood work. At this rate I expect we'd only see the doctor 6-7 hours later. The online wait times are broken and it's sad to feel that the system is pretty broken.

Just venting.

EDIT: Ok damn, I didn't expect this post to have such strong reactions. I was just venting lol. I unfortunately won't be able to respond to everyone because I am taking care of my postpartum wife and newborn baby. Ive typed up a long response in pieces so brace yourself for a long read. If you do read it fully, know that you are entitled to your opinion and I will always respect it whether we agree or disagree.

Me responses to general themes:

  1. A cheap shot at our healthcare: I am a proud Canadian and take pride in our healthcare. My post in no way shape or form was meant as a cheap shot at my privilege of free healthcare. Yes we pay for it thoroughly taxes but the fact my wife had a complicated birth and left the hospital owing zero is a blessing. However, it doesn't mean our system can't be better or we shouldn't strive to do better.

  2. My emergency isn't an emergency: You don't know me, but I don't abuse our system. I wouldn't have gone if I didn't truly feel it was an emergency. For context, I had a bad knee injury where a very heavy object fell on my knee and my whole leg bruised. I could still somewhat stand and walk on it although it was painful AF but I called up the family doctor, got requisitions for scans and went through the process. My wife came out of a complicated pregnancy and delivery and I believed we were in a bad spot (belief confirmed if you read below).

  3. Triumph in Triage: I don't want to win triage. Most comments mentioned I don't understand triage. We were triaged green ( defined as Small cuts, minor sprains, mild rashes, or small burns) where most were able to chat, my wife was almost screaming with pain. Yet, they were all getting called and we didn't. I had to take my wife to the washroom and we took a while because she was struggling, when I got back I asked the nurse drawing blood if we got called and we missed it, she immediately said no without even asking or checking my wife's name. Like how did she know? We hadn't even talked to her by then so she didn't know us. That aside, blood work usually gets done fast as many have said so 4 hours for blood work was crazy to me.

  4. Color me Green: As I said we got triaged into the Green zone (Small cuts, minor sprains, mild rashes, or small burns). With my wife's pregnancy and recent delivery, chances of an infection were high. At a minimum, she should've been in the yellow zone (Moderate abdominal pain, minor fractures, or mild infections). For those coming at me hard, IT WAS AN INFECTION SHE HAD. So yes, mistakes do happen, staff does get overwhelmed but just as they have the right to feel overwhelmed, I have the right to feel frustrated and worried for my wife.

  5. Three Hours is good: maybe I didn't express myself well, my apologies. The three hours was just to get the initial blood sample done, not to see a doctor. This was just to go past the initial step. By the time we saw the doctor, if was much, much, much later. I don't want to go into timelines because that will just get a new wave of "that's terrible" or "that's terrific" and I feel like it's redundant at this point.

Overall, You can down vote me all you want, it doesn't hurt my feelings. I was angry and fighting for my wife who hadn't been able to even hold our newborn baby because of the pain. If you ask why the pain came suddenly, it didn't. She has been feeling pain since delivery, we called labor and delivery and were told that once we're discharged it's not their department and to go to emergency. She kept getting told that it was "normal delivery pain" until it got unbearable and I took her to the ER.

Nonetheless, I have had positive experiences in the ER before where I received the appropriate level of care on past occasions. However, it is okay to accept that this time we didn't. It doesn't mean no good is ever done, just means that we can do better and we should strive to.
