What’s Rabat like for gay guys?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! So I'm an American college student who will be spending about three months in Rabat this coming summer for an internship. I'm gay, and I've been really curious about what life is actually like for gay men in Morocco, especially in Rabat.
I know homosexuality is criminalized in Morocco, and I obviously want to be respectful of the culture and careful while I'm there. But I'm also curious about what the dating and social scene is like.
For those of you who live in Rabat or have spent time there, how cautious do I actually need to be?
Is using apps like Grindr something people generally do, or is it better to avoid them altogether? Is it relatively safe to meet up with other guys if you're discreet, or are there risks I should be particularly aware of?
I'm also curious whether there's much of a gay community in Rabat and how people typically meet each other. I'm not necessarily looking for anything serious. I just don't want to spend three months feeling like I have to completely hide that part of myself if I don't have to. At the same time, I definitely don't want to put myself or anyone else in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation.
Any insight y’all can provide would be so appreciated!

No red flags, then hit u with a block

Hi i just want ur pov about those kind of people and what made them do that.

So, yesterday i find some1 in a dating app he looked cool so i sent him a message, and from the beginning of the conversation he talked allll sweet and gentle and kindly and i couldn't see any red flags, we matched in everything and we kept talking the whole day and found out that our interests are similar which is good and we planned to have plenty of dates, everything is good and i started liking him and wondering how some1 in one day can be that sweet with me and i was happy cuz we found each other, and we were talking normally he said sorry for not replying fast it's becuz he was preparing food, i said it's okey i should give him his time and i went watching a movie then when i came back i found out that after one hour or more he didn't reply to my messages and it was odd cuz he looked that kind of a persons who would inform u before dissappearing, then i sent another message and i found out that he blocked me.

Idk until i keep thinking about this situation, like what happened, did i do something wrong? Sino how people can be that cruel and what can make them do that?

I start having trust issues right now with this bunch of situations.

The life I'll never have, and the love I'll never share

I am pansexual. I have known since I was fifteen, though I could never name the moment I realized it. It was simply there, older than my words for it. How could I not love women? They are the most beautiful beings on this earth.

My family is religious, and homophobic in the way only devout love can be, my mother most of all. I wear the hijab. I am the pride of a house I love with my whole heart. So I carry a quiet grief for the life I will never live, and the love I will never share. I dream of it. I crave it under my skin: the tenderness, the freedom, the grace of being fully seen.

It isn't only women. I find men beautiful too. I am drawn to people of every kind, people I will never be allowed to touch. I am quite feminine myself, and I am moved by femininity wherever it lives, in girls and in boys who wear it openly. Once, on a dating app, there was a boy, lean and gorgeous, as if out of my dreams, and I knew what I wanted until it stood in front of me. Then I panicked and vanished. I hope he has forgiven me.

Now there is a man in my life, and he is only a boyfriend until he is ready to ask my father for my hand. I did not accept him out of love, not yet. I accepted him because he met my list: he is tall and kind, a nerd like me, devout without being extreme, and most of all, he is not fast to anger, I have never once seen him angry. He listens. He is a good man. My parents know of him. But most importantly, He knows.

My closest friends have always known, and when he joined our circle I did not stop the jokes about it, because that circle was the only place my queer heart could breathe. Since we began a different relationship, I have stopped speaking of it, but he still does joke about it often. I cannot tell whether he believes it is real, and I cannot bring myself to ask. He is religious. Shouldn't it matter to him?

And there is something I will never ask of him. I am drawn to those who yield, to softness that surrenders, submits, and that is not a thing one expects of a religious straight typical man. So I will keep it folded away, and I will never know the intimacy I crave most. When I picture the nights that wait for me after the wedding, I see myself stepping into a role I'm not sure I'll ever enjoy, and wondering what might have been.

Because I know one secret hour would become many. Because I am forbidding myself. Because what if nothing after it feels real. So I'll stick to wondering, reminiscing, pondering.

I love my family. I love how my father holds me and tells me he is proud, how my mother brags about me, how my uncles sing my praises, how my cousins look up to me. I have felt what it is to disappoint them, to lie and hide, and it was my own private hell. So for all that love, flawed and heavy as it is, I lay my true self down.

I am only another queer soul, building a life inside a closet they locked themselves in.

Is it a red flag that your boyfriend has over 500 gay followers on IG?

I wanna think that "ooh idc about his past" but being in a long distance relationship and seeing the amount of gays he’s following on social media is making me very hesitating to whether stay with him in the relationship or to break up. :/

He’s Moroccan and works in Emarate(he said he’ll move permanently here in like 6 months from now and tbh this feels pretty long)

All of my friends when they checked his following told me to stay away but he’s really kind and good looking and the vibe was there.

Ps: he has already come out to his sister and told her about me and how he plans ro bring me to his family’s house next year’s summer. So idk it’d really confusing with the red flags :(

Ps:He's very religious and believes that intimate relationships are sinful but still wants us to be in a relationship like WTF (we have never met yet btw walakin galiya fach ayrj3 we could live together lol)

Plot twist game

Feel free to write your own twisted plot and join in the fun.

Here are a few of mine:

  • I'm gay, but plot twist - I often have very strong crushes on straight men and sometimes I feel less comfortable with gay men than straight men, because I expect gay men to assign value to me based on my sexual attractiveness alone.
  • I consider myself on the demisexual spectrum because I really don't like hookups and having sex in real life freaks me out, but plot twist - I have fantasies about guys I barely know, I'm addicted to 🌽, and I've hooked up in the past anyway just to numb the pain.
  • I'm extremely turned off by guys acting rough, dominant, and full of themselves, but plot twist - why are so many of them so freakin' handsome that I become attracted to them at first?

Thanks for reading. ❤

Why does it seem impossible to find a genuine romantic connection with a moroccan ??

I'm 22, and honestly, I'm starting to feel frustrated with dating. I want a genuine relationship with someone around my age, built on honesty, trust, affection, and an emotional connection

Sometimes, people say at first that they also want a serious relationship, but after a short time, the conversation starts turning toward sex and sexual hints. It makes me wonder whether they were ever looking for the same thing in the first place

Why does a gay relationship so often seem to be reduced to something sexual? Can't two people simply get to know each other, enjoy each other's company, develop feelings, and build a sincere, innocent romantic connection without sexual expectations from the very beginning?

I'm not against intimacy. I just believe it should develop naturally, when both people feel comfortable and emotionally connected, rather than becoming the main focus from the start

Do you think this is due to sexual repression or our culture?

Am I gay? Trying to understand my feelings (23M)

I’m a 23M from Rabat, and I’ve struggled with these feelings since I was young. I feel drawn to men, especially muscular and masculine men, but I don’t experience sexual desire toward them. What I feel is more like admiration, emotional attachment, wanting closeness and affection, wanting to be accepted by other men, and wanting to feel safe and protected around them. Sometimes, I feel that other men have something I’m missing in myself.

I’m confused because I don’t really feel attracted to women either. I’ve never had any sexual experience with a man or a woman, so I’m trying to understand what these feelings mean and whether they indicate that I’m gay or whether there could be another explanation.

I’ve wondered whether loneliness, insecurity, or experiences from my childhood might play a role, but I don’t know for sure. I want to understand the difference between emotional needs, admiration, romantic feelings, and sexual attraction.

My questions are:

  • Can someone experience strong emotional feelings toward men without feeling sexually attracted to them?
  • Does this necessarily mean someone is gay, or could there be another explanation?
  • Why might I feel such a strong need for closeness, affection, safety, and protection from other men, especially masculine men?
  • Has anyone experienced something similar and found a way to understand these feelings?
  • What can I do to understand myself better and deal with this confusion?

I’m not looking for hookups or anything sexual. I’m genuinely looking for clarity, advice, and possible solutions. I would really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced something similar or have helpful knowledge.

Please be respectful. This is something personal that I’ve struggled with for a long time, and I’m hoping to understand myself better rather than be judged.

What is a time your body said yes but your heart said no?

How did that feel? Did you guard yourself, or give in?

Maybe you met someone who was 100% your type, but their personality drove you away in the end.

Maybe you met a bad boy/girl and saw the red flags, but you were so attracted that you had to fight the seduction... maybe you succeeded, maybe you didn't.

Let's hear some stories, if anyone wants to share.

Im interested visiting morocco next month

Im fem gay from the Philippines and visiting africa is one of my bucket list as a solo traveler

Is it safe to travel alone? I also wanna meet people and have fun in private but I know it is illegal to do something like that in Morocco but arab men are my type

Is it normal to be cat called or followed and harrased on the street?

I really wanna go but im a bit skeptical :( i have heard bad stories from gay tourist that they will never comeback in the country because of bad experiences from locals.

What are topics you would like people to ask you about?

I'm trying to work on my communication skills (not specifically just now - it's a lifelong process) and I want to have more interesting conversations (particularly that don't require me to get sexual) in the future when I decide to speak one on one.

So, let me know, if you're having a conversation with someone, what things do you like to be asked about? What helps keep the conversation interesting? Or, what kind of questions do you actually find annoying or rude?

Obligatory explanation for why this pertains to being LGBT in Morocco: I'm gay, living in Morocco, and in the future hope to talk more with other gay people in Morocco, haha. So I'm not looking for advice from a random straight girl in Russia, I want to hear it from people in this sub.

So confusing

Hey community, so basically i just want to ask you what’s the correct answer to the question “what are you looking for in here” especially in bumble cuz 3 guys ended up ghosting me after i replied by literally normal answers like seeing where things go or making new connections, so it’s just confusing cause its a dating app what im supposed to answer with.

Wlw struggles

To my fellow wlw especially those of you who don’t live in big cities or just don’t have a community. How do u cope? Personally, I find it really lonely and isolating. Don’t get me wrong I love being a lesbian but I’m 24 now and it’s been a pretty rough life in this regard, never have I felt comfortable enough to feel like I belong. And don’t get me started on the struggles we face simply for being born with a vagina🫩. I would appreciate some advice because I don’t think I can leave this shit hole anytime soon.
(Wanted to post this on the moroccanlesbian subreddit but that one specifically tells you everything you need to know about our struggle)

Any Aroace people out there? Do you relate?

I’ve always struggled with my sexuality until lately, I finally understood that I actually never had a crush or was attracted to anyone, when I sat down and started sorting out my thoughts; all of my very few “crushes” Ive ever had in 16 years of life were all people I felt gender envy towards or people I wanted desperately to be friends with. There was never any kind of attraction, and after three years without having any crush or even being slightly attracted to anyone I’m now 19 years old and I don’t have any thoughts of being with anyone in the future no matter what , and yes I definitely know some people will keep blabbing about how I just didn’t meet the “right person” yet but I genuinely never felt the desire or even pictured my life with a partner or a “prince/princess charming” since I was a kid . It’s just that it finally started making sense in these last three years , I have perfect friends both genders who really understand me and are my number one supporters ; If I had a choice I would’ve chosen one of them to be with , but I simply can’t control my sexuality or force it , no matter how perfect the people I meet are I just get disgusted by the thought of being in a relationship.
I also have to mention that I’m a big romance hater ; ofc I don’t mean people in general but as in content , most of my friends read romance novels or watch romance shows and movies while giggling but I’ve always been a hater, whenever I read a manhwa or watch an anime or a show and I see a hint of romance I just stop right away and feel disgusted no matter how good and well written the story is; then instantly start searching for something new to read/watch and that’s something I did ever since I was a kid.
