Advice Zero to Hero Guide (So you want to do your CBT / Full Licence?)

šŸ“¢ Guide has moved to Google Docs

What started as a simple Reddit guide has grown into something that has amassed over 300,000 views, and shared nearly 1,500 times since 2023 (if the metrics are to be believed!).

Due to Reddit’s character limits, the guide has now been moved to an open Google Doc, allowing it to be expanded, updated more easily, and supported with diagrams (rather than just being a wall of text).

The document is freely accessible, and you do not need an account to view it.

šŸµ Get yourself a brew… It’s a long read.

Please Note: The guide was formatted for Desktop and will not appear correctly on mobile due to Google's Webview mode (no paragraph breaks, compressed and fuzzy images).

As such, I have also created a non-live PDF version so that you can download it instead.

We really need re-tests at 70. What do you think?

On my way back from a client today on a busy, fast national speed limit road where most traffic does between 50 and 60mph. Came round a bend and an old lady had decided to do a three point turn after missing her turn off. There was only another 500m to a place she could have easily turned.

Luckily, I was on a superduke and came to a stop with plenty of room. I was not speeding, but probably was somewhere between 45 and 55mph. If a lorry had come the other direction, she would have been dead and I was seriously lucky that no one was behind me.

She got going after about five stabs at the manoeuvre, blocking both lanes for at least 2 mins. I have no idea how everyone avoided crashing.

I know that people should expect the unexpected and leave room to stop, but to find someone in a long car across both lanes was mad.

Before we know it winter will be upon us, and with diesel at 2 quid a go, I thought it best to upgrade my battered 25 year old Kawasaki winter hack to something that had fancy modern tech like ABS and Fuel Injection.

Enter the most boring motorcycle ever made, the NT700

30k miles, heated grips, massive screen.

1350 quid. I think I got a deal.

Anyone else picked up a solid winter hack?

Bike stolen, recovered after 2 hours. What now?

My garage was accidentally left open late evening in London.

Thieves were driving past, spotted it and came in to take my Aprilia 660 Tuono Factory. Rolled it out, and stole two helmets with intercoms along with it.

I realized about an hour after it was taken when neighbour rang my doorbell and pointed out garage was open. I hadn't gotten around to installing the tracker yet but jumped on a Lime bike with a flashlight and after 20 minutes of searching the neighborhood I found it parked on a side street. I'm pretty sure there was a woman there looking out for it, likely thieves were planning to return with a van. I put it in neutral and rolled it back which was a heavy effort till a delivery guy on a moped came and helped me push it uphill with his foot.

Ignition was mashed up and fairing around it had been broken open, but apart from that it seems undamaged.

I'd reported it stolen to the police, but called them and asked them to report that it had been recovered.

Good reminder to still secure the bike thoroughly when in a very secure garage.

I hope the damage won't cost more than £500 to repair so I'm inclined not to claim insurance. Do I still need to notify my insurer?

UK Bikers - sign this petition & share

(edited due to some feedback).

This petition is in relation to section 59 and the power police have to seize and destroy your bike:

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/779299

The petition reads:

Amend Section 59 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026 to reinstate the mandatory warning before seizing a vehicle for anti-social driving. The Government should instead introduce strict statutory guidelines and body-worn video requirements for officers before immediate seizure to protect due process.

We believe the 2026 removal of mandatory warnings allow police to immediately seize vehicles based on subjective judgment. We feel this change will result in a lack of due process, creates inconsistent enforcement, and imposes severe financial penalties on motorists without prior notification or an independent tribunal appeal.

Reverting to a 'two-strike' system or mandating strict body-cam evidence could ensure transparency, protect innocent drivers from unfair seizures, and balance anti-social behaviour enforcement with basic legal rights.

Sorry if this is a duplication or already been shared.

2004 ZX-6RR with factory race pack, how many remain?

I’m just wondering how many of these might be left in the U.K., please take a guess because I don’t think there’s any way of finding out. I have one and is road legal I know very few with the factory race pack were made road legal and were converted to road legal after leaving the factory I believe.

I brought mine back in 2020 and I have to say it is a forever bike for me even though I’ve largely fell out of love with riding this girl will never let go of her 2004 ZX-6RR.

The paper work I have for it is incredibl, including original bill of sale And probably every bit of maintenance ever done and a dyno graph.

it’s done 78xx miles and 3,000 of them were me in the last 6 years.

Suggestions for a helmet bag

I need to carry my helmet around from room to room in work. Does anyone have suggestions on a bag for it that has laptop storage too? I've seen some Chinese ones but don't know if they are any good.

Heated gloves or heated grips?

First wet season on a big bike. Had issues last winter with hands going painfully numb on the 125 on the way to work. Sure it's going to be worse on the motorway, plan on doing long trips home to see family.

Are heated grips or gloves generally preferable?

Can the components be removed from gloves to allow machine wash?

A weekend trip to Wales

If there is such a thing as God's country, it has to be Wales, at least if God is a biker.

I randomly joined a group of bikers, thanks to whom I managed to ride through the most amazing routes.

This was my first time ever riding with a group as I have been riding solo so far.
I lacked the etiquette to ride in a group. I followed the last biker a little too closely.
He gave me a gesture which I understood as "maintain distance".
After that I tried to keep as much distance as he had with the biker in front of him.
But I still might have been too close because he gave me the sign again.

I am sorry.
Hope you had a good one!

Chain in the rain problem

Seeing as its starting to get rainy again, should i clean my chain after every wet ride? I regularly clean my chain every 500 miles and i do 250 miles a week (50 miles a day monday to friday) so every 2 weeks, but ive seen mixed answers about this. Im basically just asking if my cleaning scheduale is good enough for the wet weather or if i really do need to clean it after every wet ride.

Derbyshire Police Bikesafe - great experience

Post image
48 Upvotes

I just spent the day doing Bikesafe with Derbyshire Police after seeing a Reddit post about 4 months ago sharing how good it was.

I've done it today and it has honestly been fantastic! I've only been riding a month since passing my test but the ISPGA approach, especially on position, was really informative. I received some good feedback on my ride and it definitely has encouraged me to look ahead much further to anticipate hazards and consider further advanced training. The route that we took had some fantastic twisties and views as well which made it a cracking ride.

Had a bit of a brown underpants moment when a car pulled out on me and again when my fuel injection warning light came on but just as quickly disappeared after I restarted the bike.

I'd really recommend it to anyone considering it - feel free to ask me any questions šŸ˜Ž

Advice First (low speed) crash as a new learner - feel terrible

Got my 125cc about 4 weeks ago and I've been doing some gentle practice to get used to it. Today I practiced my commute to work and due to taking a wrong turn on the way there I was coming back half an hour to an hour later than expected, and it was really dark. I've never driven in the dark before and it was raining too and I was really shocked by how shit vision is on a motorcycle even with high beams on.

My commute is mostly country roads, and as it was getting so dark and visibility was so poor I was taking it extra slow. On one gentle right-hand corner i was taking at about <30 I turned my high beams off to not blind an incoming car and suddenly everything was literally pitch black except for two blue headlights directly in front of me. Because I suddenly couldn't see anything except those, I rolled off the throttle and slowed down to something safer (I can't remember if I applied some rear brake or not but it's likely i did a little bit), and essentially just drove off the road slightly on the left into a pile of leaves because I couldn't see the road surface anymore, and dropped my bike on my foot.

Thankfully I was taking it slow already and was wearing full gear etc and had slowed down before it, so I'm totally fine, but I still feel bad. I was probably doing less than 15mph on my speedometer when I lost the side of the road so I'm hoping my bike is fine too, although my ABS light is flashing now.

I don't know what I should have done here - it was already really hard to see and as soon as I turned off my high beams it was literally like driving with my eyes closed. No street lights or cats eyes or painted lines or anything to judge by. You would have thought the oncoming headlights would show me the road at least but absolutely nothing except just two blue dots.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this - I'm not sure what I should have done here and I guess I just feel like a shitty rider. Any tips or anything? :/

125cc honda pcx win

I live rural Scotland. There's not a lot of options locally for bike dealers. Id viewed a few on Facebook but they were crap, rusty, dropped,

By chance I saw a bike dealer side of the road.

They had a 2026 plate 125 honda pcx top spec, part ex'd the day before. No price displayed as still hadn't processed it.

1300 miles on the clock. First service done.

Ā£2750. And they'll do the next service as well for free.

Runs like a dream. I think a steal. What do you think?

First motorcycle purchase after DAS

Hi all, long time lurker and first time posting on this sub.
I passed my DAS last week. Thinking of buying Versys 650. Insurance for me (41M) coming up to £1k for Wembley (London).
Couple of questions:
1. Is it worth buying now or shall I wait until Feb/March next year, just in time for Spring riding. (I don’t plan on using for commute)
2. Kawasaki versys 650; is it worth going with used or new one?

Please can experts clear my confusions. TIA.

Advice Suffolk to Wiltshire

I’m planning to ride from Suffolk to Wiltshire next summer to visit a friend, but since I’m still a fairly new rider, I thought I’d ask for some advice.

I only passed my CBT in May and have done around 1k miles so far. I think my longest ride has been about two hours across Essex on my little Chinese bike, so I’m still getting used to longer journeys.

Before the trip, I’m planning to get the bike serviced in April or May and go on a few longer rides to build up my confidence.

Is there anything else you’d recommend doing before setting off? Anything I should check on the bike, or things I might not have thought about when planning a trip like this?

I’d also appreciate any general advice for a beginner tackling a longer ride. I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, so any tips from more experienced riders would be welcome.

Cheers!

Car clamp on a motorcycle?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Would it work? Never seen anybody use one, perhaps there is an obvious issue I'm overlooking? Would fit in my top box nicely...and give me a bit more protection over a disc lock. Not sure how easy they are to defeat, but then again so are disk locks.

Discussion Turns out empty car parks are not safe places to practice.

Guaranteed always going to be somebody to assume I must’ve been doing something wrong but legit was just practising swerving and emergency braking.

Got a section 59 warning today. Feel gutted as genuinely just trying to be a better safer rider especially since my bike has no ABS or traction control.

I really like using this car park because grids and the hatches make for good obstacles. Ive been using it ever since I passed MOD2 a few months ago and never had an issue before.

Advice Help with a part name

Hi guys, passed my CBT in August and had my first topple off my bike last week in the rain, slow speed so I’m fine, bikes in one piece but I kicked out and ripped the speedo cable out whilst going down, I’m replacing that but I had to open the speedo to get the wire off, the seal on the speedo wiring housing has perished and fell into pieces when lifted out (bike is a 2018 model).

The speedo works fine so all I need is a seal, it’s 95mm diameter on the outside and has a lip that goes down slightly.

As you can tell, I have no idea what to search for regarding this type of seal, my bikes manufacturer doesn’t list the part separately, they only sell the full speedo unit so hoping someone can tell me what to search for.

Advice Test rides - what happens if you drop?

My dad has decided to book a test ride on one of the bikes he’s been thinking about getting at the local bmw garage. I thought I’d take the opportunity to book a test ride aswell on an S1000RR myself, as it’s a bike I to aspire to own one day.

I’ve never done a test ride at a dealership before, so I’m wondering how it all works.

A few questions for anyone who’s done one:

- Do you have to pay a deposit or sign anything before going out?
- Is the bike covered by the dealership’s insurance, and is there an excess if you damage it?
- What happens if you accidentally drop it, even at a standstill or at low speed? Are you liable for an excess, or potentially the full repair bill?
- Are there any restrictions on where you can ride, how long you get, or how you ride it?
- do they you a briefing on the bike and its riding modes before setting off?

It’s a pretty big step up from a R3, so i’m 110 taking it easy too 🤣 I imagine i will get some ā€œdon’t do thisā€ but i don’t plan on jumping to a 1000cc. I’m actually looking at an R6 - I just thought why the hell not since my dad’s doing one.

Any advice appreciatedšŸ‘ŒšŸ»
