SiriusXM and Pandora also do ICE ads

I used Pandora for years until I saw this (never did care much for Spotify since I do the radio option mostly)

I imagine it's probably just when people notice -- at least that's my guess. Also, not every report of companies doing this "takes off". Spotify's just really popular, so there's a bigger chance to be called out, I guess.

Satellite radio runs this ad as well.

151

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

All of these corporations will take that check to the bank with a smile. Anywhere they pay to run the ads, you'll see or hear the ads. It's not like the people who run these companies give a shit

47

u/Commemorative-Banana Oct 30 '25

Remember, in times of conflict all for-profit media repeats the ruling party's information. Therefore all for-profit media becomes state-run.

Just another example of no ethical consumption under capitalism

Funnily enough at least in terms of free tv there is a difference. Pluto and Google TV are the worst when it comes to morally wrong ads

Satellite radio runs too many ads in general

I cancelled my Sirius subscription after less than a year because I found myself paying for more ads than cable.

14

u/MeBeEric SoundCloud Oct 30 '25

See what’s crazy is i always assumed the selling point of satellite radio was minimal ads

What stations do you listen to? I have Sirius in my car and get no ads?

8

u/varyingopinions Oct 30 '25

I listen to every genre, country, rock, rap, the kids bop channel when my kids were younger, pop, the TikTok channel. I've never heard any ads other than maybe a dj saying "check out so and so on channel x"

2

u/bigtrumanenergy Oct 31 '25

I have Sirius too. I bounce around the decade stations, Willie's Roadhouse, Underground Garage, and the yacht rock/soft rock stations.

Literally the only ads I ever heard on Sirius was for other stations, other shows, and whatever album Willie has coming out.

Maybe they are talking about Sirius hosting conservative news streams?

4

u/Ok_Belt2521 Oct 31 '25

They play ads on the talk and news stations. No ads on music channels.

Qobuz do not have as big of a library tho. Ive been using Spotify for years and have almost 2800 songs. When I was using it I looked up Cumbias and a good chunk of song I wanted to hear weren't available on the platform.

I like how you cab change the audio setting depending your internet connection but some choice on this app are limited. I tried transferring my liked songs multiple times with zero luck.

Can vouch for Deezer.

I cancelled my Spotify subcription as soon as they invested in that Drone company which will assist the IDF. Moved over to Deezer and has been pretty slick so far

2

u/RucITYpUti Oct 31 '25

I moved to Deezer years ago. Finding new music was better than whatever Spotify was doing anyway.

Never had a complaint. Never have I run into a situation where I couldn't find a particular song.

Tidal does it for free

18

u/Potential-Load9313 Oct 30 '25

what's the audiobook situation on Tidal?

I think Spotify provides me a pretty good service for what I pay, but since they limit audiobooks to 15 hours per month on my family subscription and the audiobook "tier" is outrageously priced, I'm willing to change platforms.

37

u/CapNCookM8 Oct 30 '25

I really don't know how Spotify fumbled audiobooks so bad, and the service as a whole definitely got more expensive because of it.

15 hours per month? I'd be lucky if that got me two weeks. Then the audiobook tier as you said is completely outrageous. $10 for 15 hours of audiobooks vs... a certain popular audiobook brand (that I won't mention because this is a thread about protest) being $15/month to "own" (you keep it for at least as long as the service gets to) the books.

20

u/Potential-Load9313 Oct 30 '25

a certain popular audiobook brand (that I won't mention because this is a thread about protest)

I'm fully expecting at least one person to recommend that brand to me

reminds of the time when folks were (are) boycotting Target, and someone actually told me to shop at Wal-Mart instead because "at least they're up front about their shitty policies"

it gets exhausting sometimes... I'm just trying to listen on my shitty, neverending commute

4

u/RisuPuffs Oct 31 '25

If you haven't already, check with your local library - quite a few have apps now where you can download and listen to audiobooks, and you can often apply for the library card online now. Definitely better supporting them than any corporation.

2

u/riverrats2000 Oct 31 '25

Have you tried seeing if your library works with Libby or Hoopla? If they do, you can use your library card to listen to audio books for free

→ More replies (1)

2

u/DoTheVelcroFly Oct 31 '25

that I won't mention because this is a thread about protest

I don't follow, wouldn't mentioning the brand help with the Spotify protest?

4

u/CapNCookM8 Oct 31 '25

It's audible, which is owned by Amazon. If your goal is to protest only Spotify, then yeah there you go; but I imagine most people wanting to protest Spotify aren't going to be thrilled at the idea of funneling that money to Bezos instead.

3

u/DoTheVelcroFly Oct 31 '25

I understand, thanks for the answer

→ More replies (3)

33

u/notshore Oct 30 '25

i’m not sure if anyone replied about Libby and Hoopla yet, but if you have a library card you can access audiobooks for free on there. Sometimes there is a wait, a lot of times there isn’t :)

18

u/Intelligent-Might614 Oct 31 '25

I can't imagine paying for audiobooks or ebooks, given how free and easy Libby is.

It did not do it for free for me. There was a certain number of songs you could transfer for free, I think 500, after that you had to pay. Maybe it's changed now. (and I didn't pay, I manually copied my Playlists cus I messed up and started with the general "liked" list lol)

I don't see how supporting Kanye West's pet project is materially better than Spotify.

76

u/Potential-Load9313 Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

Kanye was only involved with Tidal from 2015 to 2017

and he had absolutely nothing to do with founding it

Looks like Tidal is currently run by Jack Dorsey... who is a billionaire that has his own set of problems.... regardless, I don't understand why you think that Tidal is a "pet project" of Kanye.... unless you just have no fucking clue what you're talking about

but why would someone who is completely ignorant on a subject make such bold claims... on reddit of all places?  /s

33

u/Pkmn_Gold Oct 30 '25

He is probably thinking of Jay Z.

31

u/Potential-Load9313 Oct 30 '25

even still, Jay-Z sold his majority shares in 2022

He's on the board of Block, Tidal's parent company that Jack Dorsey runs, but he's only a minority shareholder, and calling Tidal a "pet project" of his (or anyone) still isn't accurate

Are there some different billionaire plutocrats I should give my money too instead? Which streaming service has no ethical issues associated with it?

60

u/RighteousAwakening Oct 30 '25

Literally none probably.

20

u/tootrite Oct 30 '25

The internet archive has MP3s or FLACs of most music, unless you’re listening to some super underground shit you can download it and transfer it over to your phone. Offline play, no ads, no algorithms, just the music you want to listen to. Instead of the 15$/month you’re spending on a streaming service, you can put that towards buying merch from the bands you actually want to support. You can listen to morally dubious bands this way guilt-free as well.

Tidal has been a great music app for those that want an alternative.

26

u/d_ardold Oct 31 '25

Tidal also pays artists more than any other service per a quick google search. Still probably not nearly enough, but it’s something at least.

9

u/TheThingy Oct 31 '25

26

Yup. Swapped over last week. The transfer app is super handy. Been loving it

4

u/garce818 Oct 30 '25

What transfer app? I need this?

Also, how much of your music did not transfer over?

14

u/i-am-the-walrus789 Oct 30 '25

When you download tidal, it'll ask you if you want to transfer music. It'll then download something called FreeYourMusic. You can select which playlists, songs, artists or whatever you want to bring over from your Spotify. Is say of the 4,000 songs I have, maybe 20 didn't transfer. There could be more I Havnt noticed yet, but all in all it made the swap 1000x easier.

13

u/garce818 Oct 30 '25

Thank you!

Getting rid of Spotify was hard for me to do bc I didn't want to lose the music I curated. But now knowing this will make the switch easy.

I don't know what happened to Spotify's algo, I feel like when I started using the service back in 2013 it was way better. Now it just seems to recommend the most popular artists in whatever genre you're listening to, even if you already have them saved to your library.

2

u/ihavenohighhopes Oct 31 '25

I just left Tidal after a year. There's zero algorithm and, not exaggerating, maybe a dozen genres to browse.

If you have niche interests, they are not good at showing you new music or making it easy to find. Kills me because they do pay artists better, but I wasn't impressed.

Plus lossless audio goes right out the window if you're using Bluetooth.

You’ll need to just shutoff your phone. There is billions of dollars for advertising that Trump is using on not just Spotify but other streaming services, local and national television. YouTube ads are frequent.

29

u/Super_Deeg Oct 30 '25

Seen them on Reddit as well. All these companies are willing to take the money.

4

u/Otherwise-Echo744 Oct 31 '25

Just VPN outside the US and you'll never see an ice ad

2

u/TheThingy Oct 31 '25

It’s not “seeing them” that’s the issue. It’s supporting companies that are willing to give ICE a platform for recruitment. It’s like supporting a company that was taking money from nazis in 1933.

Yeah that’s the tough part. I discover a LOT of new artists on there based on their systems, user playlists, and recommendations. I haven’t heard that the other platforms have caught up on that front yet.

But for all the people who say ditch streaming and just buy physical, they’re essentially saying “give your money basically only to your existing favorite bands and sorry to everyone you’ll never come across”

Depends on your genre of music, but there are endless ways:

  • Read the liner notes of the albums you buy and see what other bands they thank. You can also see what albums the producer has done by other bands.

  • Listen to the bands that they tour with. Look for a festival that they're on and see what other bands are on the festival (this is pretty much the Warped Tour method)

  • Listen to the bands that previous members go on to form/that new members came from

  • Go on a wikipedia rabbit hole clicking links and you'll find tons of bands. You can start with a band or genre you already like.

  • Read reviews of albums you're listening to and see what bands they are compared to

  • Read threads on Reddit/other boards

  • Use Last.FM to track your listening habits and if you explore the website a bit, you'll find tons of bands.

If you're a metal fan:

  • Use Metal-Archives and use the "Similar Artists" feature / use Metal-Archives and read the forums / use Metal-Archives and read the reviews / use Metal-Archives and look at the upcoming releases feature.

To be fair, no genre of music has a resource as great as Metal-Archives, so I understand it's a bit more challenging but there are endless websites. I used to spend hours on Thrash Unlimited, No Life 'til Metal, Classic Thrash, The Thrash Metal Guide, Metal Setlists, etc, finding new bands.

None of it is work for me. It's all fun. I love the thrill of the hunt of discovering something new.

I'm not saying that Spotify doesn't work. I'm just saying that there are more ways to find music than relying on Spotify. Most of them are things I would do anyways. I go to concerts all the time, always read reviews for new albums, spend time interacting on forums, etc.

So until I see some actual proof about how much great music you find using your methodology I'm gonna assume you spend a lot of time searching for great music while I spend my time listening to it.

Do you not listen to music while you're doing this? It's not some huge methodology, it's literally just having fun with my hobby as a fan.

You can always tell the casual fans by their suggestion to "just buy the music" 😆

Buddy, I listen to new music for a couple hours every single day. I have added over 1,000 songs to my "favorites" just in 2025 alone. Do you think I have the kind of money to buy each and every song or album that I enjoy? I'd rather use that money to actually see concerts or buy merch.

The alternative to streaming isn't buying, it's pirating.

If you have an artist you like, support them by buying merch directly.

No version of streaming is a good deal for artist.

There are literally 0 ways to stream music that are both legal and ethical.

Physical media is supreme. I ripped all my 1400+ CDs into iTunes. No ads, no internet, no buffering.

u/starsandmoonsohmy Oct 30 '25

I miss my iPod. I had 120g of music. Got into a car crash 3 years ago and was never allowed access to my car to clean it out. So it’s gone. :(

This shows the issues with these duopolises ( monopoly, but a few companies rather than a singular one)

I don't have access to many alternatives that haven't supported the trump Administration nor some of the ones people are suggesting don't have even half my artists

2

u/Pengoo222 Oct 30 '25

No ads on Apple Music… Which ironically works better on Android than iOS

2

u/Jwat75309 Oct 30 '25

Damn we can't have anything.

2

u/pomengarnette Oct 30 '25

THERE ARE ICE ADS?? 🤮

2

u/Bigot-Consequences Oct 31 '25

I deleted mine!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '25

You guys get ads on spotify?

2

u/etn261 Oct 31 '25

Spotify UI sucks anyway

2

u/pB4uGo2Bedd Oct 31 '25

They plan to raise prices soon. Bye Spotify. 👋

u/admiral_kikan Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

People are going to have to pick their poison or don't stream at all. Many platforms either support ICE or Israel. But you'll really have to break it down and go further on whether Music Labels, Bands, members, artists etc also support it.

It's a very fickle thing.

Spotify, Deezer and Pandora support ICE

Spotify, Deezer, Apple, Amazon, Youtube and Tidal support Israel.

Many Radio stations across the US run SS Barbie's Propaganda ad for ICE.

u/Modest_Baus Oct 30 '25

I stopped subscription

5

u/CollateralSandwich Oct 30 '25

Do better than a boycott. Stop using it. Period. Forever. Stop using ALL streaming services. Please buy your music. Buy albums. Like in olden times. I know it's easier said than done, but please try.

5

u/ChiBurbABDL Oct 31 '25

No. I find like 100+ new songs that I enjoy every week. I cannot afford to buy them all, and I am not willing to give up my favorite pastime on earth just to make some political point and virtue signal about ICE. Let people have joy ffs.

u/BadStriker Oct 31 '25

Qobuz is showing up so much in this thread I’m starting to think it’s an advertisement. I’ve never even heard of it until now. That name is ass too

Not to mention Spotify is actively involved in making AI drone warfare happen

70

u/mancapturescolour Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

Sorry, this is an oversimplification.

Daniel Ek is the CEO of Spotify, the company he co-founded in 2006. However, in early 2026, Ek is stepping into the role of Executive Chairman, with two new people as Spotify co-CEOs. Yes, he will still influence the business and strategy etc. Some say it's just a formality to acknowledge how the company is run in the last while.

Now. Separate and apart from Spotify, Ek has, as an individual, made an investment into an AI military defence company called Helsing. Ek is also a chairman at Helsing. Ek has received criticism for that investment.

But, that is not Spotify "actively involved" in making AI warfare happen.

Spotify ≠ Daniel Ek. Ek also has made investments in preventative health screenings (Neko Health). You don't go around saying "Spotify is actively involved in making less cancer happen", do you? Because it's not true. Spotify is not involved with that business.

People getting on the rage train and take any opportunity to blame Spotify...🤦‍♂️

it's exhausting

18

u/ThatNews7396 Oct 30 '25

The last thing I want to do is spread misinformation, thanks for the nitty gritty details.

Since I’m a simple person let’s put it more simply- I don’t support people who support AI warfare. That’s yet another reason why I’m pulling my Spotify support

21

u/Potential-Load9313 Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

Who do you support instead of Spotify?

And if it's Tidal, I've got some potentially bad news....

Jack Dorsey is big on mesh networking, and research developments made in this field are prolifically used in drone warfare.

How many degrees of separation do you need to feel good about which billionaire you support?

Unfortunately for us Europeans, the Russians are already using AI in their weapons systems, so this investment into EU's military is mostly catching up on our defence investment.

3

u/Solace312 Oct 30 '25

You seem to have a very skewed perception on what AI warfare systems are. They all have man-in-the-loop for critical decisions. This is not "machines deciding to kill people". A lot of them actually are intended to patrol, defend, and alert and at the very least intended to reduce overall casualties in a war time environment through a variety of means. They are employed in what they call dirty, deadly, and dull situations. And a lot of them are counter UAS. Obviously no war is the best scenario, but not developing technologies that potential bad actors are also developing would be completely ignorant.

2

u/ThatNews7396 Oct 31 '25

If that’s true then I’m willing to say I’m wrong

Daniel Ek has invested in European defence industry. Spotify does a lot of bad things but I don't see what's wrong with it if you're not a pacifist or a tankie. Which one are you?

Yeh no, unless the people also want to call our uber, netflix, YouTube, Apple, EA, etc it will never stop. We need laws and regulations. Especially for promoting a terrorist organization.

2

u/omega884 Oct 31 '25

Laws and regulations to do what? ICE is a federal agency, using federal money to purchase ad space. What laws do you think you'd have success getting the federal government to pass that would have an impact here? The only thing I could think of is a general ban on the federal government purchasing ad space at all, which I just think is going to be a non-starter across the spectrum.

2

u/ForcePush8 Oct 31 '25

Ice is a federal agency... bro lmfao wtf does that add.. Slavery was legal too; woman voting was illegal.... what laws? Dude Ice and America as a whole r comitting war crimes. Germany didn't go on trial right away either...

3

u/sir_whammy Oct 30 '25

Cant imagine enough people care enough to stop using Spotify. Especially over ads for something we need here

2

u/mok000 Oct 31 '25

Don’t be an ICEhole.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '25

Nazis… Fuck ‘em.

3

u/liquidmetal14 Oct 30 '25

Nothing irrational about this........and Spofity has lossless audio. No thanks, I'll keep my family plan there.

3

u/rnobgyn Oct 30 '25

Friendly suggestion that we should all start buying music through bandcamp so artists get paid substantially more! Start small, a couple songs here and there - you can even stream your purchases through the app.

Would love if this movement also focused a bit on getting artists paid (which Spotify doesn’t)

And fuck ICE

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Already cancelled it, and I loved Spotify. But, I also know what a pos of company they are, so no more Spotify.
