U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Could anyone just walk into a court house with a suit and a fake business card and tell the cops “im the suspects lawyer” and get a completely unsurveilled conversation with their friend who just got arrested?

1.3k Upvotes

Like, if a criminal or something wanted to have a conversation with their associate who is being tried, without the police listening in on them.. couldn’t they just pretend to be a lawyer? It’s illegal, for sure. But what’s stopping them?

Why do Americans often switch to pronouncing Spanish origin words/names with an accent?

I have noticed this more and more often where people will pronounce Spanish origin words and names with an accent while speaking ordinary English. While I don’t hate it, I notice this only happens with Spanish, not Mandarin, not French, just Spanish. Why do people do this so often? I notice this even with people who aren’t hispanic.

Why do pred catchers so often catch people who have intellectual disabilities?

1.4k Upvotes

It seems like a disproportionate amount of people caught by pred catchers show signs of having an intellectual disability. Is there a reason for this? Like are they more susceptible to being tricked than non disabled predators?

What are motivations for elementary shootings?

Not a troll or engagement post. I just saw the tragedy that happened in Oregon on Facebook, and it made me wonder what could possibly be the motivation for hurting a large group of children? In no way am I justifying it, but I can understand the criminal motivation if someone had a horrible highschool experience coupling with bullying and mental health- but I just cant rap my head around hurting very small children with no ties to a stranger.

I tried to Google this but there isn't really information aside from the obvious that these people are monsters/evil/sick. Could someone provide some insight or psychological reasons this happens?

Also if it has to be said- please no controversial/political/personal things in the comments. I know this is sensitive I'm only asking from a scientific perspective for my own lack of knowledge.

Why are protests in France so often and also turn into violent riots/lootings?

This might be a stupid question, but I'm genuinely curious.

France is a wealthy, developed country with a long democratic tradition and strong public institutions. Yet, it feels like there are major protests in France at least once or twice a year that escalate into something quite extreme, with burning cars, clashes with the police, vandalism, and significant property damage/lootings.

Of course, protests can become heated in any country, and I understand that media coverage tends to focus on the most dramatic scenes. I'm also aware that France has a long history of revolutionary movements and street protests.

Still, for a country that is generally considered wealthy, modern, and politically stable, I find the apparent frequency and intensity of these events somewhat surprising. Why does this seem to happen so often (and seeing throughout Europe, only) in France compared with many other wealthy European countries?

Hey I need some advice. I follow a plant based diet and I have a non vegan house guest. They want me to make bacon. I bought some and I just want to know the best way to cook it.

Like oven, microwave? Skillet? And please other vegans don’t drag me. I am trying to be hospitable and I know the smell would normally destroy me but I have no sense of smell. So what’s the best way to make bacon? I want it to be perfect. This is my best friend I haven’t seen in like 7 years.

Is it weird/socially unacceptable to give a receptionist at the doctor’s office a thank you card?

• Upvotes

Hi! I am neurodivergent, and have trouble judging what’s appropriate in social situations, so I wanted to get some advice before I did anything.

I have been going to therapy since march of this year. There’s several receptionists at the doctors office I go to, but one- the one who signs me in and schedules my next appointment most of the time- is incredibly nice. He’s remembered my name since my 3rd appointment, and always welcomes me in with a big smile. He’s celebrated when I make improvements, such as scheduling sessions further apart from one another, even when it means we’re holding up the line a bit.

Recently, I was supposed to graduate out of therapy. We, like usual, did a little happy dance when scheduling it! But, unfortunately, life hit me hard and fast, and now I’m back to going to therapy every week again- a big backslide for me. This was very disappointing, going from almost graduating to back at square one.

But, when I went up to the desk to schedule it, clearly disappointed, he gave me a smile and said “It’s okay, we like seeing you here anyway! We just want you to get better, no matter how long it takes.”

It was really sweet, and it was exactly what I needed to hear. And with November coming up, I want to get him a little card. Nothing fancy, just a “hey, thanks for making me smile, you’re very good at what you do” sort of thing. I don’t think receptionists at doctors office get appreciated very often (which is reasonable, I’ve met a lot of shitty ones), and I just want to let him know that I’m thankful for what he does.

Is this weird? Would it be frowned upon or awkward to do that?

At all-girls schools and all-boys schools, are all the bathrooms “all gender bathrooms”? Or if you’re of the opposite gender and need to pee, is it always a journey to find the designated bathroom for you?

Why are rents in San Francisco so crazy compared to other Tech centers?

Rent in San Francisco is like 4000 per month, while in other Tech Tech center like Austin it's 1.2 K, which is much lower.

Considering that the income for these two places are not so much different (maybe 40% higher, definitely not 3x higher), why is the rent so different?

In conservative cultures where people don't learn about sex and anatomy in school, when do men learn about Periods?

I have heard of girls who have families so conservative that they never get told or warned about periods and think it's something wrong with them. As much as this is famous in Carrie, I've read stories of this happening pre 1950s to girls.

It raised my question, when did men learn about it? Especially if there wasn't anatomy and sex ed in schools at the time.

I've seen in shows where a character will be taking a shower, another character will use the sink, and the showering character will get hit with hot or cold water. I've never experienced this. Is the joke outdated, or do i just live with considerate people?

Is there any real possibility that some mysterious undiscovered gigantic marine animal could be somewhere deep down in the ocean?

I know this sounds silly but I feel as if it'd be possible for a gigantic marine animal that rivals the size of a blue whale. I mean we know more about what is in space than what's in the ocean. If not then maybe an undiscovered shark that isn't massive but it'd be an undiscovered shark and that would be nice to see just in general.

Do lawn signs for political candidates actually make a difference?

I don’t understand the purpose of these signs. Is it just to make me aware of a candidate? These couldn’t possibly sway public opinion right?

Why is showering so hard when you're depressed?

• Upvotes

Why do some people with depression stay in bed all day and avoid showering even when they're sweaty and feel gross? You'd think feeling uncomfortable would be enough to make you get up and take a shower, but apparently it's not that simple.

Is it really that hard to find the motivation to shower when you're depressed, or is it more like you know you should do it but just can't bring yourself to move? I'm curious what actually goes through your mind in that situation.
