New to Perfume! What are some things I should check out to get into them?

I went to a F5ve concert last month where they covered Electro World and ever since, I've been wanting to get into Perfume! I've been listening to a few of their songs over the past couple of weeks and have really enjoyed what I've heard so far.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could recommend some songs to check out or point me towards places where I can find more of their content like music videos, performances, variety shows, etc.

Also, do they have other songs similar to 575? It's my favourite song of theirs at the moment! (◕‿◕✿)

I suggest you listen to their music organically and take it spaced out. If you listen to everything all at once it won't be as enjoyable. 575 is a bit different from other songs in their catalogue with the gentle rap, but I would also recommend

- Love the world

- Macaroni

- 1mm

HAPPY! would be my pick of choice. It's right around when they filmed/released 'GAME', which is also a segment in the show.

HAPPY! is a fun and entertaining Japanese television show hosted by the electronic-pop girl group Perfume in 2008 (consisting of members A-chan, Kashiyuka, and Nocchi).

Show Details

  • Format: A variety and entertainment series featuring the trio in various comedy segments, challenges, and talks.
  • Highlights: Fans frequently highlight the “Love Dojo” episodes as some of the most memorable and hilarious parts of the run.
  • Episode Count: The show ran for 26 episodes total.

If only there was some random fan out there with the entire series, subtitled, on Google Drive, that'd be happy (pun!) to send you a link.

I'm also partial to the 2 part movie they did, called 'Pansees'. https://ysabelandrei.livejournal.com/35088.html
It's just such a departure from their personalities, and shows they can act. A fun watch. I sure don't have the movie with .srt subtitles. Would be weird if I did.

They done alot, A LOT, of media over the years. You can't miss.

Oh to be new to Perfume ❤️‍🩹 I wish I could rediscover them again 😭 I’ve been a fan since 2009!

I would start with their classics which IMO is Complete Best, Game & Triangle.

Love The World, One Room Disco, Twinkle Snow Powdery Snow, Puppy Love, and Secret Secret are some to start!

Similar to 575 I would say maybe 23:30! It has a slow, mellow, chill vibe that 575 has. 😊

Lots of varied answers… my introduction was Level3, but if you got curious with Electro World, maybe start at the genesis with the first compilation. I like the idea of watching their MVs that others have pointed to though

I would just recommend you to start with MVs from their earliest to latest! So you can get a feel on hows the music and their visual identity.

If you want to listen to their music but do not want to start chronologically, do check out “Perfume Global Compilation: LOVE THE WORLD”! It consists of their signature electro-pop hits up until the LEVEL3 era.

Welcome to the fandom!

Reading the comments, I feel like not many people got into Perfume the way I did… I just sat one evening and watched all their MVs from recent to oldest and then listened to all their albums from oldest to most recent in one time.. it’s probably better to take it slow and maybe listen to specific albums or songs in a certain order but I just took everything in one run

Sorry, I'm not trying to outdo you, but I'm the owner of this playlist on Spotify that has every song (and alternate versions of songs) including FP. Every song on P Cubed was remastered which is why I have that album on there in it's entirety.

Although I'm surprised Future Pop not available where you are. It's been available in the USA since it released in 2018. As far as I know, the only songs not available on Spotify for me are songs they have never put on streaming (songs from limited edition releases or their earliest singles).

I also have this playlist of every single Instrumental they've released, although many of them are not on streaming since they were limited edition releases only.

Prime video has some of their live concert videos. I’d check them out, polygon wave was an incredible spectacle

I would say Level 3 or GAME are good starting albums to listen to.

For English-translated video content, I very much recommend checking Macaron575's YouTube channel. They're a very active user on this subreddit, too. They do great work!

Also for song vibes similar to 575, I recommend Drive'n the Rain. Furikaerutoiruyo also kind of has similar vibes, in that it is a slower paced song.

Thank you for recommending that channel and those songs! I'm listening to Drive'n the Rain”right now, and it sounds great, I love it's relaxing vibe! One of the youtube comments described it as electronic Steely Dan XD

I love Drive'n The Rain! It's so relaxing, elegant and the dance is so hypnotizing... I'll have to look for Steely Dan, though. I'm curious now!

The Plasma Bluray has an extra with Drive'n The Rain performance per member and someone uploaded This YouTube video with the four views. It's pretty cool too✨

Hi! Thanks for recommending my work and for your kind words! It's great to see my work can help new fans know them better!! 🤍✨

I would also recommend my Ko-Fi page, since I keep record of everything I have translated since I started there and I've made sure to not paywall anything since my goal is for everyone to get to know Perfume as people a bit more! There's some written interviews from magazines, transcripts from radio programs before I made them videos too.

Pease look at the Gallery section: there are some posts about programs and interviews that YouTube doesn't allow for copyright reasons and the links are there.

Now, I would recommend my inspiration and the first person I worked in a Perfume translation with! prfm-uk's channel he has many live performances and some full concerts still!

Personally I love JPN, Macaroni, Flow, Future Pop, Plasma and Nebula Romance albums.

Please do watch some of de older stuff before the Prime Concerts so you can see their concert progression.

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for all your hard work! It's great to have so many fantastic resources available as a new fan. I'll be sure to check out your Ko-fi!

Btw, is this prfm-uk the same person you mentioned in your comment? I came across this channel about a week ago, but it has completely different videos and is still active!

2

u/Macaron575 2d ago

Thanks so much for your reply and for your kind words.

I think both channels are theirs, but one has subtitles and the other is more recent? Not sure exactly why there's two but if he made one because he had to be careful with strikes, I think I get him? I've been too close to losing the channel before, so that's what comes to mind.

I didn't know he had a recent video! I'll go watch that too.

Going through their albums is usually the best place to start, and if you like 575 then maybe starting with the album it's on, "JPN" is a good idea! (It just happens to be my favourite album, oops~)

They sadly don't do a lot of songs exactly like it with that mellow tone, but other slower songs of theirs are: Dream Land, Negai, Macaroni, Drive'n The Rain, and Starlight Dreams (just to mention a couple)

When I was a new fan I watched a lot of concerts to find new music since that's where their image as electro robot divas really shines! I'd recommend their dome shows above everything else: 1234567891011 @ Dome, Level3 in DOME, P Cubed in Dome, and Nebula Romance Part 2 in Dome! They're all on Bilibili!

If you just want some cunty MVs then here are some of my favourite singles:

If you just want some cunty MVs

has "cunty" gained some new meaning I'm not aware of?

2

u/CreZativity ~Android& Supremacy~ 3d ago

Yes

2

u/spilk 3d ago

ok, because cunty means annoying or obnoxious to me, two words that i wouldn't associate with anything Perfume related

1

u/CreZativity ~Android& Supremacy~ 3d ago

Naaahhhh, internet slang for it has deffo been around for a while

the official youtube channel is probably the best starting point.

Second this - They have a fantastic catalogue of decades of work. The MVs will give you a good sense of their eras
