If you made $60,000 a year, it would be closer to $2.

15

u/Familiar-Spray-4678 Aug 24 '26

Is that 60,000 after taxes or before taxes? Big difference.

47

u/CrystalEntity1984 Aug 24 '26

How much taxes do you think he pays a year? You probably pay more.

34

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 24 '26

Certainly if done by percentage, yes.

These people pay an average tax rate of 4%, and only pay up to $180,000 in Social Security taxes due to the cap on it.

If we removed the cap, Social Security would be solvent forever starting tomorrow.

21

u/AspectAdventurous314 Aug 24 '26

Guys like Bezos avoid even the 4% by taking a $1 salary, taking out loans against their assets and using that as capital to spend day to day.

20

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 24 '26

Right, which is what all rich people are doing: Living on low interest loans on their accrued investments.

That's exactly why we need to tax unrealized gains on stocks, just like normal people do on their property taxes.

-6

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

terrible idea that will collapse the economy, of course that’s probably the goal thought isn’t it?

6

u/thighcrusader Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Wow you're right, I'm sure everyone would much rather the economy collapse because people can't afford food or rent rather than do anything to make billionaires pay their fair share.

S&P goes up 7-10% a year, and you think an evenly applied property tax on assets, realized or not, would make people move that money to a place it's not growing? Tax them wherever their money is. If they wanna lose more money by taking their money out of the growth machine, by all means. But it'll be taxed and put back into the economy that relies on the workers, not the parasites on top. The scenario you've been conditioned to parrot assumes a lack of enforcement, but I think you're just not creative enough. A properly motivated U.S. government could 100% force a proper solution.

U.S. already levies taxes on expats... Enforcement is only a problem if there's no motivation

-2

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

Taxing unrealized gains is a terrible idea. Didn’t say I was against taxing billionaires, there are just better ways to do it.

-4

u/Elm30336 Aug 25 '26

Yet progesives want more than they make each year! Their goal is to destroy wealth as they have said they want no billionaires! They want government to control all major wealth in the USA! Bad enough they spend 7 trillion a year it’s not good enough they want to wipe out the billionaires and their 9.4 trillion, or roughly 1 year of spending by congress! So you take it all then what? Who is next that’s right millionaires. Now we are all poor! It’s ridiculous

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Wealthy people paying their fair portion of taxes would have the opposite effect, actually.

We already did this with the New Deal, which created the middle class and funded our modern infrastructure. It brought about the most widespread economic prosperity in our history.

These uber wealthy are simply parasites on our society. They want the benefits of being in our society, while not paying their portion.

1

u/Elm30336 Aug 25 '26

Government didn’t create the middle class! The fact Europe and Japan was destroyed did! Had Europe and Japan been full force immediately after ww2 they would have eaten our lunch just like the 1960s and 1970s, issue is you romanticize a period of time that really didn’t exist, but for a very small group of people.

ok do it without taxing unrealized gains. which is dumb.

Real too big to fail mentally ya got there. Didn't know bush jr was on redditĀ

1

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

not sure what that means. Just not trying to pay taxes on my 401k each year. Taxing unrealized gains is beyond dumb.

1

u/guymn999 Aug 25 '26

thats a wild thing to boast as you sit in one of the worst economies in 50 years.

1

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

by your standard or who’s? My economy is perfectly fine.

7

u/TrickyChildhood2917 Aug 24 '26

Accounting tricks (legal for the rich) destroying America every April for the past 30 years.

5

u/unpersoned Aug 25 '26

I remember that a few years back he was on the news for not only not paying taxes (because of this low-interest loan hack rich people live off of), but actually getting rebates on expenses on his kids' private schools.

1

u/libertarianinus Aug 25 '26

Rich people also use 501c3 to pay 0% tax

2

u/TrickyChildhood2917 Aug 24 '26

That’s crazy talk, it’s gonna take a Democrat to make that happen… oh wait :(

2

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Our government is most certainly riddled with corporate sellouts who actively keep the citizens from having things that benefit them with our own money.

I'd argue that Democrats have fewer, not that it ultimately matters.

2

u/Perfect-System2504 Aug 25 '26

Social Security would already by simple math be solvent forever if we stopped taking money out of it for other things ....

2

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

That's an urban myth.

The Social Security trust fund has been in place and untouched since it's inception in 1939. What has changed are the laws around it and who has to pay in, and how much.

It's never been put into the "General Fund" of the Government.

Social Security did used to be fully untaxed until Ronald Regan was president though, which started in 1983.

1

u/icemanpallmall Aug 25 '26

Cant have that just like we cant have a VA that isnt worse than basic health insurance. The people in charge want you to give them every ounce of your being and then disappear.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

They don't pay $180,000 in taxes, you're confusing the tax withheld with the wage base. Social security is 6.2% withheld on up to $184,500 in wages. That means the tax withheld is $11,439 for 2026 (increases every year)

Even if you're a billionaire you're only paying a max of $11,439 in social security tax. Medicare tax is a little different with no cap and the rate does increase after $200,000 in wages.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

That's what I just said.

The Social Security taxes are capped at $180,000 in income.

You pay the same amount if you make 180k, 180 million, or 5 billion.

If they removed that cap, it would take care of any financial issues Social Security has forever. Rich people don't want to pay into something they'll never need, but that's part of living in a society.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

That's literally what I just said

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Yes, when you reiterated what I said in the previous comment. lol

You were the only one confused in this equation.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

No I was clarifying what you said since what you said originally was incorrect. You said they pay up to "$180,000 in Social Security taxes due to the cap"

But they don't pay up to $180,000 in taxes so I wanted to make sure that was pointed out. Sorry to ruffle your feathers, hope you have a better day!

1

u/Guilty-Fold4857 Aug 25 '26

Most of what they make is never considered income so it’s not taxed and considered part of that percentage. So effectively it’s even lower. Appreciation upon death isn’t taxed.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Right.

Exactly why we should tax unrealized stock gains that they take loans out on to live off of.

5

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 24 '26

2.75b in income tax last year for Amazon.

On 77b income.

So a lot of dollars.. but not enough of a %.

12

u/CombinationOwn1604 Aug 24 '26

An effective federal tax rate of 1.4%

3

u/ShadowWalker2205 Aug 25 '26

OMG how will they survive these extortion rates

8

u/CrystalEntity1984 Aug 24 '26

But how much did he pay, he may own shares but he's not all of Amazon. The "Wealth vs. Income" Gap: Billionaires like Bezos typically draw a very small annual cash salary (historically around $82,000 from Amazon), meaning personal income taxes fluctuate heavily depending on when they choose to liquidate or sell stock shares. Stock Sales: The $2.7 billion estimate was triggered when Bezos sold roughly $13.6 billion worth of Amazon shares. Effective Rate Context: While $2.7 billion is a massive cash sum, financial analysts noted it amounted to roughly 4.5% of his total net worth increase during that surge year and roughly 1% of his overall cumulative fortune. I would like to only pay 1% income tax , average person pays roughly 30%.

6

u/Default_Name_6969 Aug 24 '26

People this rich dont pay taxes on anything really. As you said most of these rich assholes have a small salary that gets taxed and then millions-billions in stocks. They then use those stocks to take out zero interest loans to live off of. when it comes time to pay that loan they borrow from another bank to pay it off. It's like putting everything on credit and then paying off that credit card with another zero interest credit card on repeat. They borrow until they die never selling stocks so that they dont have to pay the taxes on stock gains and there is no taxes on those loans.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 25 '26

You switched in the middle of that from income to worth to make your percentage.

1

u/ActivePeace33 Aug 24 '26

Bezos paid about 9% of that, from the profits of the 9% of stock he owns.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 25 '26

So he paid taxed gains to pay taxes.. love it.

0

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

Corporations aren’t people. Taxes on corporations, just like the hated tariffs, will ultimately be passed on to the consumer.

1

u/Familiar-Spray-4678 Aug 24 '26

No I mean 60,000 net or gross. Like I would need more gross to have 60,000 net. I’m not referring to his taxes.

4

u/sightunseen Aug 24 '26

After lol.

1

u/Emergency_Exit7603 Aug 24 '26

... so is that like work credits you can only spend at amazon?

1

u/Logos1789 Aug 25 '26

What taxes? We’re Bezos in this hypothetical, right? 🄁

-8

u/Technical-Shallot-34 Aug 24 '26

Given that Bezos only owns <10% of Amazon, you should divide that by ten and allocate the rest to other shareholders.

3

u/BestDescription3834 Aug 24 '26

I'd rather we multiply it by ten and charge that amount to the rest of the shareholders.

9

u/Strict-Ice1860 Aug 24 '26

More like $.05

7

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick Aug 24 '26

Yeah, but he’s mentally ill so that’s everything to him.

10

u/AdventurousLoss3794 Aug 24 '26

This šŸ’Æ. I honestly believe these people are clinically mentally ill.Ā

5

u/Wb9VBScxu2uZJHeq2E3W Aug 24 '26

There's a simple cure too, but it terrifies them more than anything that has ever existed: tax them until they're normal people again.

3

u/fbunnycuck Aug 24 '26

You do understand that in a normal administration that isnt so corrupt the govt is technically us...right? So yes more billionaires money and big businesses money should go to the givt to be distributed properly

3

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 24 '26

ā€˜The government is technically us’ is an adorable fairy tale. I'm pretty sure 'we' didn't vote to fund endless foreign wars, bail out massive banks, and subsidize Nancy Pelosi’s stock portfolio. They aren't distributing anything back to you, bud.

This is a wild rewrite of history. In 2008, Obama literally won the presidency, including New York, by running against the Iraq War because the entire country was sick of endless interventions. He ran on anti-war and won, but then turned around and drone-struck the entire Middle East anyway lol. Voters didn't force politicians into those wars, military-industrial complex lobbyists did. Stop giving corrupt elites a pass.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist... and that democracy does

1

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 24 '26

You actually want the government to have more money?

2

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick Aug 25 '26

Am I the government?

2

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 25 '26

You might be a fed

1

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick Aug 25 '26

Oh. Ā I like money so if I’m the government getting the money I think… yes? Ā Give the government more money as long as that government is me. Ā You can trust me. Ā I’m on the Internet.

2

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 25 '26

Exactly what a fed would say right before trying to sell me a rocket launcher in a Walmart parking lot. Nice try, Agent

1

u/Wb9VBScxu2uZJHeq2E3W Aug 25 '26

Yes, to give right back to the citizens as healthcare and social security.

1

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 25 '26

If you think the US government acts as a charity that takes money from billionaires just to hand it back to you, I admire your innocence

1

u/Wb9VBScxu2uZJHeq2E3W Aug 25 '26
  1. It's not a charity, billionaires only becomes billionaires by stealing it from the labor class. It's already our money.

  2. It works well with an ethical and not-corrupt politician like Mamdani.

If you're an "all politicians are corrupt" doomer, than you're part of the problem, because your complacency normalizes corruption from the wealthy, powerful, and Epstein class.

1

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 25 '26

ā€˜It works well with an ethical politician like Mamdani’ imagine calling someone a 'doomer' because they refuse to buy into the fan fiction that a career politician is going to save them.
Going from 'Hey, maybe the federal government is highly inefficient with money' to 'You must be complacent with the Epstein class' is an Olympic level stretch. Seek help

1

u/Wb9VBScxu2uZJHeq2E3W Aug 25 '26

There is real life evidence that proves it can work, but no amount of facts or evidence could peel you away from licking those Epstein class boots.

You might feel confident in your anonymity on reddit, but nothing disappears from the internet forever. One day you could be fingerprinted as one of the Epstein class boot lickers.

u/MaskedButPresent Aug 25 '26

It's called psycopathy

1

u/FukkingDeathMental Aug 25 '26

No.Ā  That's a disservice to people with real mental illnesses.Ā  Bezos and his lot are all just greedy assholes.

3

u/AyJay9 Aug 24 '26

Nah, c'mon. Mentally ill people are better than that. Billionaires got something else wrong with them. A detachment from humanity.

5

u/Inner_Gap4768 Aug 24 '26

It’s actually $0 to Bezos since Amazon delivery vehicles are all owned by subcontractors, not Amazon. The fines are paid by small business owners and Amazon isn’t reimbursing them for fines.

3

u/Tupperbaby Aug 24 '26

Please do not bring factual information into a Reddit circlejerk.

I mean, uhh...Yeah! HE'S SURE STICKING IT TO BEZOS!

1

u/KaleidoscopeSea9324 Aug 25 '26

This time Amazon actually paid the fines. I know it's not Bezos personally and that's a whole other conversation but at the very least the subcontractors didn't have to pay.Ā

1

u/BobbyBoopersnoot Aug 25 '26

Where do you live that Amazon doesn't own the trucks? Is this something that happens in flyover states without real cities?

2

u/rogerdoesnotmeanyes Aug 25 '26

That is true literally everywhere in the country. Amazon does not operate their own delivery vehicles in any state, they are all operated by contracted ā€œdelivery service providers.ā€

2

u/sharklaserguru Aug 25 '26

Just because it looks like a company owned truck does not make it one. Same deal with FedEx Ground (not Express), all farmed out to business that one one or more trucks and crews.

1

u/VegetableBuy4577 Aug 25 '26

I don't know the ins and outs of who owns them, but here in "flyover country" Omaha, Amazon deliveries are mostly done by Amazon vans, but there are some vans with no markings on them that also do deliveries, and sometimes even private vehicles will.

2

u/OutrageousCrab9224 Aug 24 '26

To be fair elon makes him look like a saint

1

u/mattyg1964 Aug 24 '26

Drivers are responsible for their traffic tickets, not Jeff Bezos.

2

u/Lucky-Earther Aug 24 '26

Who owns the trucks

1

u/mattyg1964 Aug 24 '26

Doesn’t matter. If the Mailman parks illegally, he or she pays the ticket.

3

u/Lucky-Earther Aug 24 '26

If the Mailman parks illegally, he or she pays the ticket.

You may want to double check your facts on this before repeating it

0

u/mattyg1964 Aug 24 '26

Mailman here…. That’s a fact, Jack.

4

u/Lucky-Earther Aug 24 '26

The USPS is immune to parking tickets

1

u/mattyg1964 Aug 25 '26

Absolutely false.

1

u/Lucky-Earther Aug 25 '26

There was just a court case in recent news that affirmed sovereign immunity for USPS with specific exceptions

Let's say parking enforcement comes up to an empty vehicle parked illegally, does that ticket get made out to the person currently driving the car or to the owner of the car. If the person who drove it there gets ticketed, please explain how they found that person.

1

u/SmokeyJoe2 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Not Amazon. It's the same reason Uber doesn't pay for traffic tickets of their drivers.

1

u/Lucky-Earther Aug 25 '26

Uber drivers usually own their own vehicles. Who owns the trucks

1

u/SmokeyJoe2 Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

The delivery service contractors own the trucks and employ the drivers. Not Amazon.

1

u/BlueRibbon8000 Aug 24 '26

But if you taxed his companies to the fullest extent, it wouldn't make a difference. I think we ought to take his word on that. /s

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- Aug 25 '26

Depending what the baseline is. If we're basing it off of a salary of $1 million per year, it would be 3 dollars for Amazon, 33 dollars for Bezos himself. Let's be honest, it's still nothing. I don't make a million, and if I got a fine for 33 dollars, I'd forget it tomorrow.

1

u/aoibhinn-mw Aug 25 '26

But it's millions for the public. Why are you framing a win for public good as bad? Mumdani making right on wrongs of avoided fines by a cooperation is still functional

1

u/Livid-Ganache547 Aug 25 '26

That 9 million is coming out of YOUR pocket, and every other customers as well. Use your brain. Bezos doesn't own Amazon, he just runs it. He isn't paying anything towards those fines. We are.

1

u/kittenconfidential Aug 25 '26

but amazon and bezos will likely not be the ones paying. scamazon contracts out to third parties specifically so that it can avoid this risk.

1

u/kingsuperfox Aug 25 '26

Mandami stopped that practice in NY.

1

u/giftedbutloco Aug 25 '26

Meanwhile he sold Amazon.

1

u/I3adIVIonkey Aug 25 '26

He will still bitch about it.
