THIS is an appropriate response.

More concerned with his precious alma mater’s reputation than the victim?! Naw.

They very clearly care about the victim based on the language used.

Can you tell me what the last sentence of the first paragraph says? The last sentence of the first paragraph is the thesis of the letter. Can you also point out where he mentions the well being of the victim with the same priority as how the crime has affected him and his fellow graduates?

He talks about the violation and revictimization of the woman. He brings up revictimization multiple times. Also it is clear that he is speaking the language that might actually get through to this president. Untold people are decrying this school administration for their behavior. Do you think this person should just add more of the same? Looks like he’s trying to make change happen in the only way that, sadly, ever seems to work.

Sounds like you are acknowledging that he is clearly focused on the value of his investment and the reputation of the institution in this letter. Yes, he does mention the victim, but the effects on the victim are secondary to the effects on the institution. You further acknowledge that the people at Cornell speak the language of reputation and money - perhaps this is why he framed the letter as he did, but I don’t think that makes it better - I think it makes it worse. I rest my case. Thank you.

What year did you graduate from Cornell?

I read it again. ā€œIf Cornell is to salvage any fraction of its standing, you must execute the following non-negotiable demands immediately:ā€ Cornell’s ā€œstandingā€ (and therefore the value of the degree) is the goal of any action demanded by the author. He leads with his concerns about how this tragic event has affected the value of the degree and then makes demands to salvage the institution’s standing. The victim remains an afterthought and is secondary to the value of the degree and how this tragedy has affected The Elite’s investment. The initial tragedy and then this type of response - and people wonder why higher education is viewed unfavorably...

I think he's attempting to communicate using the only language Cornell seems to recognize: financial impact.

Perhaps. Maybe just add that to the indictment?

If the organization he was disappointed in was one he had no connection to or influence on, his opinion would be seen as irrelevant.

It is normal to leverage the connections one has in order to have the desired impact.
