Either Mamdani has an amazing PR team, or previous mayors have all been hilariously incompetent and/or corrupt.

62

u/Tired_PhD_Holder 8h ago

It seems both, but significantly the latter. Government can work.

23

u/Awkward-Artichoke817 8h ago

When you elected people that actually believe in leadership

12

u/Tired_PhD_Holder 8h ago

This is the thing, we need to get the bought-up establishment politicians out of office. We need people that will actually work for the people to make change. It can be done.

27

u/Fay-control 8h ago

Both.

Have you heard of Eric Adams? The worst mayor of all history of NYC, he left with a 7% approval rating (most of them Zionists because he was more of a mayor of tel aviv than NYC)

5

u/1234FakeSteet 5h ago

Don't forget all the weird Turkish stuff!

1

u/Fay-control 5h ago

Turkish-Americans in NYC did not support Eric Adams, Israeli-Americans supported him till the end.

2

u/1234FakeSteet 5h ago edited 3h ago

I was clearly referring to the bribery scheme and his corruption. Did you read my comment as "Adams was bad because Turkish people liked him"? That's not what I meant.

Do you think Adams was bad purely because of the groups that supported him, and not the reasons why those groups supported him?

If your whole schtick is "Adams was bad because Israeli Americans like him" then I'm not really interested in having a conversation with you.

1

u/Fay-control 5h ago

I know, but even tho Eric Adams was lobbying for Turkey, Turkish-Americans did not supported him, the complete opposite of Israeli-Americans.

u/Effective-Log3583 7h ago

Also a matter of priorities. It’s probably more efficient to go street by street. BUT it suits people’s needs more to take care of the problems they care about and it’s more visible.

4

u/WhitneyStorm0 7h ago

I think both. Pr can do oly so much if it's just words

5

u/1234FakeSteet 6h ago

New York's last 4 mayors before Mamdami:

Eric Adams

Bill de Blasio

Michael Bloomberg

Rudy Giuliani

de Blasio was the least scandalous and even he ended up paying back ~$300k for misuse of NYPD resources. The other three were/are hilariously corrupt.

It's the PR team - he has a whole social media team on taxpayer payroll. It is still as sh*tty as it has always been, job market is a lot worse than anyone would like to admit.

26

u/Thin-Competition3018 8h ago

Govt at work. how about that?

24

u/NextAd7514 7h ago

It's almost like its not hard to do the right thing in those positions.

We've been conditioned to think republican scum and corporate dems are all we haveĀ

18

u/Soggy-Confection 7h ago

Let's not undersell what Mamdani is doing. It probably isn't easy. You have to care and you have to work hard. The problem is we keep electing people that don't care and don't want to work hard.

8

u/2001_Arabian_Nights 6h ago

Give me ā€œcares and works hardā€ over any politico-theoretical-ideological dogma every day. It’s a job. Do it.

8

u/universal_friend1 7h ago

Somebody posted a video of their local pothole in LA and tagged Mamdani in it. Thing got fixed that day and that's not even his city.

1

u/justdisa 6h ago

Embarrass your local government! They'll look bad by comparison if they don't fix it.

1

u/RedRider1138 6h ago

Okay that’s hilarious šŸ˜„ I was jokingly saying ā€œYo Mamdaniā€ to myself while driving by a pothole yesterday thinking about the folks saying that on videos (and they get fixed!)

6

u/CantaloupeFluffy165 7h ago

Is this guy running for President? He's got my vote.

9

u/StopwatchGod 7h ago

He can't run for President because he's a naturalized citizen.

2

u/amazingmrbrock 4h ago

Oh but a foreign intelligence asset as president is fine?!

/s

9

u/mpjjpm 7h ago

He’ll run for senate eventually, or get a presidential cabinet appointment. Based on his success getting stuff done in NYC, I would love to see him as Sec of Housing and Urban Development or Sec of Transportation.

5

u/Sariscos 6h ago

Imagine a dream team administration of folks getting stuff done for the American people and telling corporations to get stiffed? Not in my lifetime, but I can dream.

3

u/justdisa 6h ago

Oh man. I've never cared so much about Housing and Urban Development. He'd be fantastic.

1

u/Dseltzer1313 7h ago

That’s how Al D’Amato made his bones in NY too

1

u/sweatyandbitchy 2h ago

too many billionaires in texas for this :/

-1

u/drcobosjr 8h ago

Too bad he’s a radical Islamic leftist!

22

u/Majestic-Pack-8969 8h ago

/s?

22

u/drcobosjr 8h ago

Yes, didn’t think I needed it lmao

11

u/SacredSepia 8h ago

This is Reddit and there are many people who do think he is a radical. So unfortunately the /s is needed.

7

u/Meowakin 8h ago

This - so many people say that without a hint of sarcasm. Poe’s Law.

5

u/Acceptable-Ad8780 7h ago

Yeah I got it be because I also add !! when I'm sarcastic, but have been playing it safe just largely due to both and there seems to be more people that think like that have been in higher numbers lately.

6

u/couldntbeasked 8h ago

His ideas on how to run the mayor's office certainly are radical compared to his inept predecessors.

Fun fact: calling his predecessors inept is fine, but reddit says it's not okay to say c*rrupt.

-1

u/BerettaFranchi 6h ago

We now have both less potholes and less jobs.

-5

u/Sid-Phillips-495 7h ago

This is a straight up lie. Broadway in Brooklyn is still a pot hole ridden mess and the portion of the jackie under the overpass is missing more chunks of road then ever - they can't even be called holes anymore. There are rats in Williamsburg and Greenwich, wherever there are outdoor eating stalls.

5

u/MagnusRusson 6h ago

Where did the post say there's no more potholes?

-2

u/Sid-Phillips-495 6h ago edited 5h ago

It says fixed problems he's tagged in. I've tagged him, hasnt helped one bit.

edit: looks like his professional social media team is here to downvote but not explain why he hasnt addressed East New York

-19

u/Constant_Ad_8028 8h ago edited 6h ago

Wow 50-100 bucks of work on a pothole.

Don't get me wrong it's great to see stuff get done, but people are still hungry and homeless and under paid.

Victories are great both big and small but gotta tackle the real issues and not just the small ones just to appease the people without spending the money on real important issues.

Don't settle for less NYC!

Edit: I guess the downvotes come from people who are satisfied with a 1/5 milllion chance at an Opera tickets, a few grocery stores, and some potholes filled?

Or maybe from west of the Hudson.

I'm on the side of NYC here ya bums! lol not against progress.

Just sayin don't get so overly exited with the "little victories," but to keep insisting more, so you can eventually settle for what you want.

Be thankful, sure, but keep on demanding better. That's how you negotiate and not get taken, regardless of whatever guy you give your problems to, to fix.

Edit2: On second thought, if you don't want anybody to stand up for you, and be on your side, standing up for the people of NYC by demanding more, then that's on you now.

Funny, the way you complain about the help, you'd think all the down voters were from Jersey.

9

u/KayoticVoid 7h ago

They're not settling for less and he is fighting for more. But if this level of progress seems to be unprecedented.

7

u/Vibrantmender20 7h ago

Yeah guys obviously that 50 bucks spent on a pothole is what’s holding back fixing homelessness

3

u/Sharp-Bluejay2267 7h ago

Yeah exactly, at that cheap might as well not do it like all previous mayors.

Big problems only… or something braindead like that.

-1

u/Constant_Ad_8028 6h ago

Disingenuous much?

Yeah, cause that's exactly what I said /s "to not do anything" lol

Get outta here with that nonsense.

Read it again. Put glasses on this time if that'll help.

-24

u/Wickedocity 8h ago

Progress would be having a government that functions without having to contact a mayor.

16

u/Fridge_living_tips 8h ago

You think the mayor/the person in charge of the road has a map of all the problems in the city?

A nonfunctional government would be people tagging the mayor and the mayor doing nothing

1

u/MikeLikesIkeRS 8h ago

As someone who worked for a road department, we did actually. There's a service we contracted out that would go over every square inch of the roadway with cameras, and gave us an extremely detailed report of the health of the roadway, alongside any major problems.

I don't know why people are downvoting OP, he's absolutely correct. A functional government would be a government where you don't need to contact the mayor, instead being able to submit any and all problems conveniently through a road dept's website and/or phone/email.

-11

u/Wickedocity 8h ago

He is responsible for the city agency that should handle those reports. Fix the agency.

6

u/DontForgetYourPPE 8h ago

So desperate to find an issue to complain about aren't you?

-5

u/Wickedocity 8h ago

lol, I guess you never state anything negative about the government?

4

u/DontForgetYourPPE 8h ago

Not when they are doing a good job and getting stuff done. There's plenty of real criticism to be had, I'm sure, but digging in to criticize stuff getting fixed is wild

2

u/DigitalUnlimited 8h ago

How dare they show that government can be functional!

3

u/Fridge_living_tips 8h ago

There is 6,300 miles of road.

Is it more effective to let citizens alert of pothokes or hire ALOT of people to do that

-1

u/Meowakin 8h ago

User reports are all well and good, but will always be inherently reactive. We should always be looking to be proactive whenever possible. Whether that’s feasible here or not, I don’t know. But I suspect mapping something like that could be done in an efficient manner with proper planning.

1

u/Fridge_living_tips 5h ago

Patching potholes is always reactionary and cant be proactive unless you rip up all 6300 miles and replaxe it with AsplatX which doesnt crack and isnt possible

1

u/Meowakin 5h ago

I’ll admit I don’t know the science behind potholes, but surely there are ways to predict where they are likely to occur? There’s also just active monitoring for them rather than passively waiting for some citizen to report it.

What I do know is that relying on user feedback alone is so insanely error prone and it should never be a first resort for managing anything. It can be an important signal, it should not be the only signal. People will often assume something has been reported by someone else, and ultimately nobody has reported it. Or nobody has reported it to the right channel.

3

u/Vibrantmender20 8h ago

Progress is useless without perfection is a pretty juvenile take, my guy.

1

u/Wickedocity 8h ago

Who said that or had that take?

2

u/Vibrantmender20 7h ago

You literally just insinuated that what Mamdani is doing isn’t progress because it doesn’t happen automatically

1

u/Wickedocity 7h ago

Just because that is what your bias got out of a post does not mean that is the meaning.

-1

u/Sid-Phillips-495 6h ago

One is more effective as a PR stunt, the other is more effective for everyone in the future. Which do you think is happening?

2

u/Medium-Violinist-903 8h ago

Oh no, people have to actually say something to get help instead of just being silent, the horror!

1

u/Meowakin 7h ago

Did you like the days when if your internet went out and you had to call the ISP and go through all that troubleshooting, only to find out an hour later that there’s an outage in your area and none of that troubleshooting mattered?

Or do you prefer now, when the ISP notifies you that there’s an outage in the area within minutes without you ever needing to call them?

2

u/Medium-Violinist-903 7h ago

I prefer the internet to get fixed in general.

1

u/Meowakin 7h ago

Duh. But you’d prefer if they fixed it without you having to say anything, right?

2

u/Medium-Violinist-903 7h ago

Yea, duh, kind of like how potholes weren’t being fixed before, and they are now. So it’s better now.

1

u/Sid-Phillips-495 6h ago

Pouring $5 worth of asphalt isnt fixing anything. The fixes are the worst ever, quantity over quality I guess but they are already re-opening.

0

u/Meowakin 7h ago

Better, yes. But we should always strive toward an ideal, rather than rest on our laurels.

2

u/Medium-Violinist-903 7h ago

I never said we shouldn’t try to keep improving. But we can still celebrate steps forward instead of complaining they’re not enough.

1

u/Meowakin 7h ago

We can do both, yes.

1

u/Medium-Violinist-903 6h ago

The person I was responding to initially was only complaining about something that is positive solely because it was not positive enough.

0

u/Wickedocity 8h ago

They have a webpage to report potholes. Shouldnt that be the correct method and shouldnt it work?

3

u/Medium-Violinist-903 7h ago

Why is tagging something so much worse than going to webpage to report things?

-1

u/Wickedocity 7h ago

Because it should function without having to hope one person sees a tag.

2

u/Medium-Violinist-903 7h ago

Is it really that much better to hope that someone that is monitoring the webpage does their job?

I get that in a perfect world, nobody would have to report anything, not even a webpage, the potholes would just be fixed immediately. But we don't live in a perfect world, and we never will. So in the meantime, its a good thing that potholes are being fixed, even if it does come from people tagging posts. If all you can do is focus on how this good thing isn't good enough, then you'll clearly never be satisfied with anything other than perfection, a perfection you'll never get.

1

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 7h ago

Contact government with problem -> government fixes problem is the exact workflow we DO want. The f$&# are you smoking?Ā

1

u/Wickedocity 7h ago

I want a city's reporting system to work without tagging someone on a social media app. Taxpayers pay for the reporting system. It should work. Take Mamdami out of the equation. Would you think tagging a public official to get something done when the taxpayer-funded system doesn't work is a good thing?

2

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 7h ago

You're staring progress in the face and shit talking the incompetence they're fixing.Ā

1

u/Wickedocity 7h ago

They aren't fixing the incompetence if you have to tag someone on social media to get anything done. That is not progress. That is a failure to fix existing taxpayer-funded departments.

2

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 7h ago

Getting work done at an unprecedented rate isn't fixing incompetence?

I guess the bot farms are back up, because this is some dumb ass AI early in it's training, to be this fucking stupid.Ā

1

u/Wickedocity 7h ago

You cannot counter my points, so you resort to personal attacks. You repeatedly ignore non-functioning departments. I guess that's all you have got.
