You guys asked why my 3D printed FPV wing needed 4 motors. Turns out 2 was the answer!

A while back I shared the initial design of my new quad-tractor V-tail FPV wing here and asked what you guys thought of it. Well, after a lot of development and flight testing, I thought I'd share how it turned out!

Quite a few things have changed since that original design, most notably dropping from four 1003 motors to two 1103s.

The quad setup was an interesting experiment, but the interaction between motor thrust, pitching moment, V-tail and elevons made this one a real challenge to get flying the way I wanted.

I've been through multiple aerodynamic configurations, CG positions and control mixing arrangements, gradually working through the problems until I arrived at something I'm really happy with.

The result is VENOM, a 249g, 600mm wingspan, fully 3D printed FPV aircraft that's now happily ripping around at low level doing acro!

Final setup:

  • 2× 1103 motors with HQ T3×2 props
  • DJI O4 Wide
  • Matek F405-Wing WMO running INAV
  • 2S 1000mAh LiHV
  • Four servos controlling elevons and V-tail ruddervators
  • 249g AUW
  • Approximately 7 minutes of mixed flying

The most satisfying part has been getting the aircraft to perform the way I'd originally imagined, even if the route to getting there was rather different from what I expected!

Thanks to everyone who commented on the original design. It's been a really interesting project.

What do you guys think of the final result?

I had an idea and I'm going with it. It will mostly be airbrushed and some feathers will be near the edges just to break up the straight lines. I'm hoping when I'm done nobody would give it a second look if it was flying high

Waited 2 weeks of this bad boy to arrive. Soo happy freewing is jumping on the larger edf bandwagon. This 110mm will end up in a 3d printed mirage 2000B at some point over the winter.

Need advice/help

Hey everyone, looking for advice on how I should precede in getting back into RC airplanes. I used to fly a bit with my grandfather when I was younger before he passed away. My old airplane (a small foam beaver) crashed beyond repair years ago. I have a transmitter and this orange box, (still looking for the receiver side of it) and a couple of 3 cell lipo batteries. What would be the best option for me for getting a new plane to fly? and also maybe where would i buy the receiver side of the orange box if I can't find it? Looking for any advice as I am not super knowledgeable but used to fly with my grandfather a lot and would really like to get back into the hobby as it seems fun and really nostalgic and a nice way to remember him by.

First "fast" plane. V1200 vs Viper 90mm EDF

Basically the title post. Im ready for a step up in planes and these 2 have caught my eye.

Has anybody in here owned/flown both and can compare them? I will eventually buy both just not sure which first. Im thinking the viper will be slightly easier to fly (i have 2 battery packs through a buddies, never seen a v1200 irl) i do know about the v1200 torque roll issue

Im making a 3d printed A4 skyhawk made of lw pla. The A4 will have a 600 mm wing span and the engine is a 50 mm edf with a 50a esc. Now I want the longest flight duration possible so could you advice me what battery to get for the longest flight time? I know it says recommend with lipo but im looking more into LiHV. Thanks!

edit: I use the 2627-kv4600 engine

How hard is it to fly RC planes?

FIL was really into RC planes and has probably almost a dozen of them. I would guess they’re all between 4ft and 6ft wingspan. He’s actually won competitions with some of his planes. They’re kits, but he was really into customizing them. He’s getting old now and wants to give some to my son. He’s 7, so there’s no way he’s flying them for a while, but I’m honestly nervous about my own ability to fly them. I was going to try to have him show us, but is it easy enough to start slow and not fuck up, or is it the kind of thing where you start with a little one and work your way up?

Since some of you asked for a video of the flight test, here it is! Didn’t really have control authority and the ailerons had stopped working just before the flight so I couldn’t correct for the roll.

Case for the RM Pocket

Hi folks, there are a couple of cases for the Pocket, but none really fit all my criteria.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6661286

This had the padding which is unnecessary and I'd have to buy it. Also the logo is a bit meh and caused adhesion issues for whatever reason.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6682546

This one you had to remove the gimbals and it has a weird spacer.

So... I wanted gimbal saver and case in one without weird logos.

How to attach stabilisers to aircraft

Post image
4 Upvotes

What is the best way to attach these? I will have a boom running from the fuselage, I want the stabs to be detachable with carbon fibre spars in each stab. It'll be about 2.5m wingspan so I need it to be pretty well reinforced.

I can't find much info on how to attach these stabilisers. Does anyone have any links or ideas?

Seeking advice on a custom flying setup for my physically diabled friend

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hey Reddit, my best friend is in a wheelchair, and I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how I could make something I love a reality for him to experience as well- or at least try.

Some relevant background information, then the idea

His physical ability:
He has control of his right arm, and can lift and move his right arm fairly well at the shoulder. He cannot grip with his right hand. He has a wheel chair that he navigates using a joystick. He can look to his left and to his right, but not a ton. He can tilt his head left and right, and he can tilt his chin up and down. He’s 28, if that matters.

My experience with RC:
I found so much joy in flying RC planes when I started last year. I like gliders the most. After flying a handful of models, my favorite are the smallest and simplest. I’ve only ever flown alone, but I’d like to change that.

The idea:
While out flying the UMX radian one day I was admiring how simple it was. It was so simple that I could fly it with only one hand on pitch+rudder while FaceTiming my friend with the other so he could watch me fly (ridge lift did the rest). And then it gave me the idea. Since the radian only has elevator and rudder you only need one joystick to control the directional axis of the plane. This is a key detail in consideration of making flying a possibility for my friend, since he’s is already able to control a 2 channel joystick on his chair. Then there’s the other part, keeping lift on the wings, which can be done with throttle (until he figures out wind). Assuming his right hand will be occupied with the joystick, that leaves his head and mouth. Throttle is just an analog proportional input, and you could give him a medium to control this with a bite pressure sensor.

Where you come in:
I have never tried to make a custom remote or anything like this before. I don’t even know where to start- but I guess I would love guidance on any of these things. If you are able to help with any information, I really appreciate it!
- JoySticks. What kind of joystick should I be looking for? Does it have certain specs I need to be wary about?
- Throttle. Does anyone have any feedback on how I could link up something like a bite pressure sensor as a throttle interface? I’ve seen some gaming setups for disabled people that inspired this idea, but I’m not sure if it’s feasible.
- Putting it all together. I am a software engineer and I fly drones and can solder and stuff but I definitely am no electrical engineer. I’m not even sure where to start with wiring it all up, but I’ll figure it out. Any guidance is appreciated!

The dream is to give my buddy can something he can partake in his condition, and to me this feels like a genuine possibility. I’d love for him to experience this

Thanks to anyone who read this. Happy flying

TLDR; my friend in a wheelchair has partial mobility of his right arm and can control a joystick. I want to build him a custom flying setup with a joystick and a bite pressure sensor for throttle, in order to enable him to fly 3-channel planes like the UMX radian.

PS. (The UMX radian has folding props and is super fun to fly powered. If you fly on ridge lift you can stay up the entire day on a single battery- absolutely love it.)

Sizing advice for a Twin-Boom Pusher (Long Flight Time) – 2212 1400KV & 3S 2200mAh

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I am designing a scratch-built twin-boom pusher RC plane aimed at maximizing flight time / efficient cruising.

My powertrain & power setup:
• Motor: 2212 1400KV
• Battery: 3S 2200mAh
• Prop: Planning 8x4E or 8x6E (clearance between booms allows up to 8-9")
• Target AUW: ~750g - 850g

I need advice on sizing the aerodynamic surfaces:
1. Main wing: Suggested wingspan and chord (aiming for ~1000-1500 span, moderate wing loading)?

  1. Tail surfaces: Sizing recommendations for the horizontal stabilizer.

Any advice on boom length relative to chord, CG placement, or general twin-boom design tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I built a fully open-source RC flight simulator focused on hyper-realistic physics (alpha), please roast it!

Please roast it. I genuinely want all the criticism: what feels wrong, what’s missing, what you actually want and need in a sim. That’s how this gets better.

I’m an engineer, and I’ve spent a long time working on pure physics. I wanted an RC sim that’s built on real physics first, so I made one. It’s 100% open source and will always be free. Copy it, fork it, break it.

What it has right now:

  • Hyper-realistic flight physics: real flying, real landings, real feel
  • Wind, turbulence, weather, and time of day
  • Night flying with LEDs
  • Realistic materials and damage: props break, landing gear flexes, ground and grass friction
  • Planes (including jets, the classic Ugly Stick for learning, and the Timber), helicopters (some still in testing), and RC cars
  • A tornado scenario
  • Crash cost calculator (still in testing)
  • Works with an Xbox controller, your EdgeTX radio, sim USB dongles, or basically any joystick

What’s coming:

  • More physics realism and better per-model flight feel
  • Next plane: the Sonicmodell Skyhunter
  • INAV integration
  • FPV racing drones
  • Boats and water physics
  • Better crash cost calculator
  • New scenarios

Heads up: this is a very early alpha. Because of how deep the physics goes, there’s still a lot of polishing to do. New versions drop almost daily, so please keep updated to the latest one.

Big thanks to Sonicmodell, Hitec, and Savox for their support, and to OpenAI (Codex) for backing open-source projects like this. We’re also working toward licensed models from well-known brands.I also saw other sim which is an excellent sim. If you’re the dev, you’re more than welcome to join this project and bring your ideas and criticism.

(volantex ranger 600mm in vid) Only have a couple hours of flight time over several planes and I'm already seeing a DRASTIC improvement with my flying skills. Hopping between beginner to expert modes in the air now and performing maneuvers I never thought possible in such a small frame of time. It really is close to being up the field in the simulator and the cost free (in game) experience has been invaluable as a learner.

Paper covering for wooden wing

I know that I will be gifted a small free-flight glider model kit, maybe 2-2.5ft span, with an open wing, to be built in the classic rib-and-spar configuration (Graupner Sonny).

I want to cover this wing with paper. I know that there is a special kind of very light but strong paper specific for this purpose. From memory (I built one of those 40ish years back) there is also some sort of post-treatment that will tighten the paper; this needs to be applied after the glue has dried.

Does this sound familiar? I want to buy those, but can anyone please tell me what this kind of paper is called, and also the "stuff" that needs to be applied to tighten the paper? Iow, if I want to search for these, what are the words I need to use? And since I'm talking about glue, what glue would be the best to use for this?

If we have any Germans here, the words are "Japanpapier" and "Spannlack".

Thank you all.
