Only thing unrealistic about Subaru is the way he sacrifices himself for everyone. I'd never submit myself throught so much torture for someone else, i think.

I think we might. It still sucks balls, but Subaru understands that RBD is his only power in a magical world, and it is an incredible one, and so he uses it.Ā

Plus he’s crushing hard af, and his crushes like him back. He’s on cloud 9 and he doesn’t want to lose it.

If he doesn’t RBD, Subaru’s a worthless nobody in this new world, not even good enough to be a servant. He ain’t getting laid. He’s too old to get good at anything. He knows how important the Emilia camp are.

Actually in one of the mobile games that got EOSed, in one of the endings, he ends up as a merchant with a partnership to Otto selling condiments, he still has RBD but he doesn't use it at all. He's a nobody but, not worthless since he still has his memories from his home world.

He only rbds when he's actually cornered tho, he wouldn't voluntarely die after what Satella told him about how he should seek value within himself rather than within what he can do because RBD is only a fail-safe and isn't what creates his worth as a person

Hey man Subaru without RBD at the very least can work as a star wikipedia, which a lot of powers and names in Re:Zero are tied to.

ā€œIf he doesn’t RBD, Subaru’s a worthless nobody in this new world, not even good enough to be a servant.ā€

Isn’t Arc 4 the antithesis of this?

u/Significant_Glass_50 Newbie Aug 28 '26

In fact, one important plot point relies on him realizing that he does all that because of how important everyone (Emilia, specially) is for him, and that he would never have done so otherwise

16

u/papu16 Newbie Aug 28 '26

Nah, you can get used to shitty things, pain included. If I had an opportunity to save someone by "taking out" myself - I'd probably do that. Probably not as often as Barusu and try to find easier way out, but you can get used to that.

16

u/ziggytrix I Suppose, Therefore I Am Aug 28 '26

I mean, it's not like he immediately started offing himself like a video character looking for exploits. He only ever intentionally died after things went horribly wrong and he'd already died and been reborn 6 times.

I don't think any of us can understand what it's like to die and come back 6 times.

u/Pheonxs Smol Emilia Took My Hand — I Froze (Socially) Aug 29 '26

Dude, you may get used to pain, but you'll never get used to death, unless you wanna end up like Greed if Subaru

That doesn't make him unrealistic, that makes him abnormal.

Even with his mental resilience which is way above that of a normal human, his coping mechanisms and trauma have several realistic elements.

He’s not wrong at all. I don’t like Rudeus, but Subaru literally doesn’t hold any kind of grudge against anyone. He forgives people who torture him. He’s more like a saint from religious mythology than an average human being, like a saint who takes on our sins and forgives us.
I’m not saying he isn’t well written, but Subaru definitely isn’t realistic at all. Rudeus is an awful person, and that’s realistic. You can literally torture Subaru in a dungeon, and he can still forgive you or not hold a grudge against you. I mean, just look at Todd Fang in Arc 7. An average human cannot relate to Subaru.

He’s not wrong at all. I don’t like Rudeus, but Subaru literally doesn’t hold any kind of grudge against anyone.

He holds grudges, to the point he originally didn't want to forgive Garfiel and wanted to beat him up until Echidna gave him that hint about his behavior and Ryuzu further explained why he acted the way he acted.

With Rem and Ram, he also was extremely paranoid and on the verge of chosing Wrath If over canon, effectively deciding to hold a grudge against the world.

What happened in all these instances is that Subaru chose willingly to leave behind those grudges, which is what he needs to do having an ability like RBD: holding a grudge, specially with that ability, can prove to be completely lethal and self-destructive because resentment compounds with more deaths and failure.

He forgives people who torture him. He’s more like a saint from religious mythology than an average human being, like a saint who takes on our sins and forgives us. I’m not saying he isn’t well written, but Subaru definitely isn’t realistic at all.

He only forgave Rem and Ram because prior to that torture he spent 15 days bonding with the two of them, to the point that, to a hikikomori like him, they became an integral part of his life.

And even then, like I said, he was terrified of them and could have gone the wrong way:

—He could no longer think of living in a world without Emilia.

He loved spending his days with Emilia at the mansion. He loved learning all sorts of things about the world. He loved Ram, who’d taken such care of him in spite of her blunt tongue. He really loved Emilia. He loved Rem, who insulted him with polite language but always showed him how to do things. He was enveloped by goodwill toward everyone living at the mansion. Subaru wanted to stay there forever.

Those overflowing feelings filled his chest to bursting.

But on the other side of that happy coin—

He loved Emilia. He despaired at lacking the power to protect her. Life at the mansion had grown stale. He didn’t know where or when he’d be found out. He feared Ram, who commanded Blades of Wind that could slice his throat. He was terrified of Rem and her skull-crushing iron ball. Roswaal’s disturbing madness could lead him to command the twins to eliminate Subaru without mercy. Every time he woke up, he checked whether he was still alive, and he could sense himself cracking under his own constant vigilance against despair.

---

Ā I mean, just look at Todd Fang in Arc 7. An average human cannot relate to Subaru.

Todd was literally never forgiven, he spared his life so as to not prove his ideology.

Even with his mental resilience which is way above that of a normal human, his coping mechanisms and trauma have several realistic elements.

"Way above that of a normal human".

Sweetheart...no human is like this.

The mental strength is the unrealistic part of Subaru, his mental strength is superhuman.

Also his coping mechanisms are incredibly minor considering the sheer nature of the trauma he experiences.

A little bit of self harm and nightmares? I mean come on dude.

Uhhh... what do you think "way above that of a normal human" means?

The mental strength is the unrealistic part of Subaru, his mental strength is superhuman.

Not really, I made a whole ass tweet explaining why Subaru's coping mechanisms are incredibly realistic, this is really just a very superficial reduction of what coping mechanisms he uses and it doesn't include attachment issues, emotional supression, codependency, catatanoia and more:

He isn't mentally resilient he has mental breakdowns all the time and it's implied he is on the edge(the arm scratching)

12

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

Yeah, but look at what happened to Rui when experiencing the same as him...

5

u/drakylskies Newbie Aug 28 '26

Thats a different conversation. If the option was would you like to be subaru, deaths included a person would say no.

But if you already were subaru the question isn't would you want to be subaru. Its are you willing to kill yourself to save the only people who care for you.

It's would you want to be iron men if it meant having dead parents, alcoholism, being tortured in a cave and having shrapnel in your heart to be a hero. The answer is no.

But if you already are Tony the only question is "so how bad is the heart pain?"

7

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

We were arguing about his mental resilience though, not what I would do in his place.

10

u/drakylskies Newbie Aug 28 '26

You are far more resilient to stressor when you choose to take them on after accepting there's no choice rather then if they are forced on you or if you had a plan b. But even but. Acceptance his resilience isn't super human.

He turned back around for emilia but originally thought of just leaving her to die meeting elsa

He did give up on the twins until he made a realization

Petelgeuse caused him to go insane in two diffrent ways

He did plan to quit emilia until rem brought him around

The rabbits were going to mind break him if not for echinda

He gave in to roswaal that he'd do anything if he called off the assassin and rabits.

He did mind break when satella tried to talk to him

And every respawn from wrath made him want to run until he realized there's no way they could get away from her safely without emilia getting involved if I'm not mistaken.

The story is rezero isn't about being an unbreakable paragon. It's about getting up when you break. Garf and meeting his mom. Emilia and her past. Rem losing her sister. Roswaal losing the book. Beatrice and that person".

Meanwhile the main villians are people who represent sins who all break but never got up. Petelgeusse and murdering fortuna. Regulus and goes first wife. Capella and her obsession for attention and motherhood. The gluttony brother being slaves while collectively just stealing other people's lives rather then making a good life themselves.

I understand all of this, I even made a thread responding to someone saying he wasn't psychologically realistic using all this points and proving that he doesn't need to become permanently catatonic for the trauma to have an effect. But still, his inability to give up is a superpower that none of us could dream to obtain.

1

u/RubyHoshi Echidna Offered Knowledge. I Asked for a Hug. She Just Stared Aug 28 '26

Subaru is a complex character, his coping mechanisms and trauma are very relatable and i never denied such but i still think there is an epic hero element to Subaru that puts him on a line i can't even dream to reach. To be clear i don't think relatability equals good writing. Subaru is a great character and i don't like self inserts anyway.

4

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

You can't dream to reach because you don't have his inability to give up, which is his superpower.

But the psychological realistic aspect is there.

2

u/PapaTahm Newbie Aug 29 '26

If you think that is the only unrealistic thing about him...

His interaction with Meili when confronting her is as unnatural as it can be.
Literally sounds like a alien pretending to be human.

Subaru is written with a extremely common flaw in book writing that is called the "Messiah Dilemma/Complex", where one is written as the undeniable Savior of the story, so he is written with mentality and morals that are unrealistic for the sake of being this savior.

1

u/SadCry6605 Let Roswaal Cook – It’s Dangerous, But Damn, It’s Delicious Aug 29 '26

I thought it was being extremely forgiving. I believe most people will try to sacrifice for they love one but the one you know humiliated or torture them.

1

u/firefly32_ Satella’s Darkness Falls Like a Soft Lullaby Across My Soul Aug 29 '26

You say that but time and time again humans would quite literally go through hell and do the impossible to save the people they love.

1

u/RequirementLanky3911 Rem Smiled, I Saw Heaven (Briefly) Aug 29 '26

thats not unrealistic, subaru does sacrifice for his loved ones but there are times he gives up cuz he died for so many times. but with support, he got BACK ON TRACK

1

u/StatementFun7324 Newbie Aug 29 '26

Another one is that he didn't give up in first episode. People change forever after ONE near death experience. He experienced DEATH tens if not hundreds of times on his first day.

Also, I'm pretty sure almost his entire life in another world is unrealistic. Rudeus started as a child, had to go by rules of the world. Even as a small time noble, he still had to work in order to have a shot to going to university. While Subaru is moving in with a princess, in massive mannor ON DAY 2 pretty much.
