I mean, I kinda get it, Subaru is an awesome guy, but almost nobody would be like him in those circumstances. Meanwhile Rudy is a pretty realistic depiction of a basement dweller

Maybe they mean mindset. Subaru thinks & acts more idealistically which isn't most humans while Rudeus thinks more pragmatically. Though I would say most don't try some of his actions however overall most humans are pragmatic.

283

u/Alacune Newbie Aug 29 '26

I think it's more because Subaru has a tendency to roll nat 20's on deception and persuasion. Dude could literally sell snow to an eskimo, and the Eskimo would THANK him for the buisness.

Meanwhile, people are more likely to call out (or pretend not to notice) Rudius's more fanciful quirks. Rudius is clearly not running a charisma build.

89

u/Potential-Peanut-140 Newbie Aug 29 '26

Tbf some of these checks he got to roll after a couple of tries if he himself wants something like in Arc 3.

Of course when he wants to do something for someone else he is just that guy lol.

66

u/Alacune Newbie Aug 29 '26

Personally speaking, I thought Subaru was a complete brat throughout Arc 3 (until Rem snaps him out of it). He even gets good advice from Anastasia, and his response? RAGE.

He went into the arc in a weird headspace of inferiority, insanity and pride, and it REALLY dumpstered his charisma after the first death.

58

u/Potential-Peanut-140 Newbie Aug 29 '26

Tbf she did take advantage of him moments prior for information. But yeah, he was in a terrible mindset.

32

u/Afraid_Ad_6046 Newbie Aug 29 '26

Agreed. Subaru has definitely not rolled nat 20s throughout, it’s something he’s built up over time, often through trial and error, where the error often leads to a painful death.

Rudeus also learns, but doesn’t die nearly as much (only three times total technically), so he doesn’t have the same ā€œrizz or dieā€ stakes kind of experience

And i honestly LOVE IT!!

Both when he met Paul and when he had a fight with Scoldat he needed to hear those things, even if they were cruel and got him into a very bad place at the moment.

People really underestimate how much Rudy grows through the series.

Now that I think about it, Subaru is really idealistic to the point that he even makes most idealistic historical figures look pragmatic in comparison.

22

u/mustardwhale69 Newbie Aug 29 '26

in my head cannon i believe Subaru is outright insane. He is not thinking pragmatically because he is not thinking like a average person. After all that suffering he has to have a few screws loose.

This and the structure of the story itself pushs subaru to the extreme that almost no one would have to face in their life unlike with MT having a more close to home struggles imo

4

u/ILoveSongOfJustice Newbie Aug 29 '26

I wouldn't say Rudeus was pragmatic at all. I think he operates with a relatively baseline intellect you'd expect from someone with the capacity to reason. Like, this was very specifically a lesson he had to learn when he first got in trouble with Paul - because he believed himself to be some paragon of pragmatism and logos, when in reality he was just as reasonable as everyone else - if not less so due to his constant need to be right about things.

Rudeus is almost a textbook narcissist.

Saying he's more "realistic" than Subaru is just straight up disingenuous, because Subaru went through all of the same lessons that Rudeus did in the very first season. His delusions were completely and utterly quashed and he had to ultimately build himself back to something of a stable personhood(literally Re:Zero, it's in the name).

However Subaru has very human’s reactions like when he dies, he still feels the pain and terror from his previous death. He also suffers and despairs in face of impossible walls which is very human

23

u/FirmMusic5978 Reinhard Defended My Honor (I Didn’t Have Any) Aug 29 '26

I would disagree on this and so would LouiseI'd say. She is right in that being able to die over and over like that while still maintaining a rational mindset is not normal in the least, Subaru's mentality is off the charts. Like even at his breaking point, that is already far beyond what the average person's breaking point is, several times over. The handful of people who are aware of his ability all agree he is an abnormal monster.

Only thing unrealistic about Subaru is the way he sacrifices himself for everyone

I think we might. It still sucks balls, but Subaru understands that RBD is his only power in a magical world, and it is an incredible one, and so he uses it.Ā

Plus he’s crushing hard af, and his crushes like him back. He’s on cloud 9 and he doesn’t want to lose it.

If he doesn’t RBD, Subaru’s a worthless nobody in this new world, not even good enough to be a servant. He ain’t getting laid. He’s too old to get good at anything. He knows how important the Emilia camp are.

Actually in one of the mobile games that got EOSed, in one of the endings, he ends up as a merchant with a partnership to Otto selling condiments, he still has RBD but he doesn't use it at all. He's a nobody but, not worthless since he still has his memories from his home world.

In fact, one important plot point relies on him realizing that he does all that because of how important everyone (Emilia, specially) is for him, and that he would never have done so otherwise

15

u/papu16 Newbie Aug 28 '26

Nah, you can get used to shitty things, pain included. If I had an opportunity to save someone by "taking out" myself - I'd probably do that. Probably not as often as Barusu and try to find easier way out, but you can get used to that.

18

u/ziggytrix I Suppose, Therefore I Am Aug 28 '26

I mean, it's not like he immediately started offing himself like a video character looking for exploits. He only ever intentionally died after things went horribly wrong and he'd already died and been reborn 6 times.

I don't think any of us can understand what it's like to die and come back 6 times.

22

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

That doesn't make him unrealistic, that makes him abnormal.

Even with his mental resilience which is way above that of a normal human, his coping mechanisms and trauma have several realistic elements.

20

u/Spare_Understanding8 I Joined the Witch Cult for the Sandwiches — No Regrets Aug 28 '26

He’s not wrong at all. I don’t like Rudeus, but Subaru literally doesn’t hold any kind of grudge against anyone. He forgives people who torture him. He’s more like a saint from religious mythology than an average human being, like a saint who takes on our sins and forgives us.
I’m not saying he isn’t well written, but Subaru definitely isn’t realistic at all. Rudeus is an awful person, and that’s realistic. You can literally torture Subaru in a dungeon, and he can still forgive you or not hold a grudge against you. I mean, just look at Todd Fang in Arc 7. An average human cannot relate to Subaru.

5

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

He’s not wrong at all. I don’t like Rudeus, but Subaru literally doesn’t hold any kind of grudge against anyone.

He holds grudges, to the point he originally didn't want to forgive Garfiel and wanted to beat him up until Echidna gave him that hint about his behavior and Ryuzu further explained why he acted the way he acted.

With Rem and Ram, he also was extremely paranoid and on the verge of chosing Wrath If over canon, effectively deciding to hold a grudge against the world.

What happened in all these instances is that Subaru chose willingly to leave behind those grudges, which is what he needs to do having an ability like RBD: holding a grudge, specially with that ability, can prove to be completely lethal and self-destructive because resentment compounds with more deaths and failure.

He forgives people who torture him. He’s more like a saint from religious mythology than an average human being, like a saint who takes on our sins and forgives us. I’m not saying he isn’t well written, but Subaru definitely isn’t realistic at all.

He only forgave Rem and Ram because prior to that torture he spent 15 days bonding with the two of them, to the point that, to a hikikomori like him, they became an integral part of his life.

And even then, like I said, he was terrified of them and could have gone the wrong way:

—He could no longer think of living in a world without Emilia.

He loved spending his days with Emilia at the mansion. He loved learning all sorts of things about the world. He loved Ram, who’d taken such care of him in spite of her blunt tongue. He really loved Emilia. He loved Rem, who insulted him with polite language but always showed him how to do things. He was enveloped by goodwill toward everyone living at the mansion. Subaru wanted to stay there forever.

Those overflowing feelings filled his chest to bursting.

But on the other side of that happy coin—

He loved Emilia. He despaired at lacking the power to protect her. Life at the mansion had grown stale. He didn’t know where or when he’d be found out. He feared Ram, who commanded Blades of Wind that could slice his throat. He was terrified of Rem and her skull-crushing iron ball. Roswaal’s disturbing madness could lead him to command the twins to eliminate Subaru without mercy. Every time he woke up, he checked whether he was still alive, and he could sense himself cracking under his own constant vigilance against despair.

---

Ā I mean, just look at Todd Fang in Arc 7. An average human cannot relate to Subaru.

Todd was literally never forgiven, he spared his life so as to not prove his ideology.

4

u/ru1n_singzzzie Newbie Aug 29 '26

Even with his mental resilience which is way above that of a normal human, his coping mechanisms and trauma have several realistic elements.

"Way above that of a normal human".

Sweetheart...no human is like this.

The mental strength is the unrealistic part of Subaru, his mental strength is superhuman.

Also his coping mechanisms are incredibly minor considering the sheer nature of the trauma he experiences.

A little bit of self harm and nightmares? I mean come on dude.

Yeah, but look at what happened to Rui when experiencing the same as him...

8

u/drakylskies Newbie Aug 28 '26

Thats a different conversation. If the option was would you like to be subaru, deaths included a person would say no.

But if you already were subaru the question isn't would you want to be subaru. Its are you willing to kill yourself to save the only people who care for you.

It's would you want to be iron men if it meant having dead parents, alcoholism, being tortured in a cave and having shrapnel in your heart to be a hero. The answer is no.

But if you already are Tony the only question is "so how bad is the heart pain?"

5

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

We were arguing about his mental resilience though, not what I would do in his place.

12

u/drakylskies Newbie Aug 28 '26

You are far more resilient to stressor when you choose to take them on after accepting there's no choice rather then if they are forced on you or if you had a plan b. But even but. Acceptance his resilience isn't super human.

He turned back around for emilia but originally thought of just leaving her to die meeting elsa

He did give up on the twins until he made a realization

Petelgeuse caused him to go insane in two diffrent ways

He did plan to quit emilia until rem brought him around

The rabbits were going to mind break him if not for echinda

He gave in to roswaal that he'd do anything if he called off the assassin and rabits.

He did mind break when satella tried to talk to him

And every respawn from wrath made him want to run until he realized there's no way they could get away from her safely without emilia getting involved if I'm not mistaken.

The story is rezero isn't about being an unbreakable paragon. It's about getting up when you break. Garf and meeting his mom. Emilia and her past. Rem losing her sister. Roswaal losing the book. Beatrice and that person".

Meanwhile the main villians are people who represent sins who all break but never got up. Petelgeusse and murdering fortuna. Regulus and goes first wife. Capella and her obsession for attention and motherhood. The gluttony brother being slaves while collectively just stealing other people's lives rather then making a good life themselves.

He's not wrong lol. There are certain people who would act similarly to Rudeus after getting reincarnated, but not many would be as amazing of a guy as Subaru

40

u/Pheonxs Smol Emilia Took My Hand — I Froze (Socially) Aug 29 '26

Honestly, I think the whole thing is a bit stupid, cuz on one hand Subaru is transported into the world as he is right now, while Rudy is reincarnated into the world with the memories of his old life. People would have vastly different reactions to both the cases

45

u/Jaghn Newbie Aug 29 '26

No, not really stupid. Not in the context of the comparison.

I doubt that it's very realistic for a person to experience a FRACTION of Subaru's life and still remain loyal to his principles. His personality, though changing, is still the makings of a "Hero" at its core. Alot of real people crumbled for things objectively less, and I daresay that even applies to the majority.

So yea, Rudeus is indeed a more realistic character for this specific case.

26

u/RazzyBoyRo Newbie Aug 29 '26

People seem to forget that Subaru is not really perfect, he has "what if" routes for a reason.

We just happen to see the route where he makes the "correct" choices. Honestly, anyone would break or change if they experienced everything that Subaru does, especially knowing you can do something about it since dying is not the end.

11

u/Jaghn Newbie Aug 29 '26

Well, yes, there's also a reason why they're called "what-ifs". There's one canon Subaru, and it's the guy who chose all the "right" decisions.

Then again, I'm just a larper. I stopped watching after S2E4, because it hit a little too close to home. Everything I know about this series from that point onwards is learned from people on this sub and my brother who loves this series to the death.

What the heck is everyone in the comments saying about Subaru never holding a grudge?

He DID hold grudges. He isn't flawless. Are we forgetting how Arc 1-3 occured? The reason he let the grudges go is literally because he experienced worse. This is why he can let go because he tried holding onto grudges in the Betelgeuse arc and it led him to ends where everyone died, people he resented and himself.

There is a literal arc displayinh why he doesn’t hold grudges for too long and focus his everything on preventing crises as best as he can.😭😭😭😭😭

As for the matter itself, I don't know. Thing is, both are in places we can never imagine. I can hardly imagine myself as Rudeus or Subaru. I can resonate with Subaru about being insecure about yourself and I do think he is tackled quite properly as a person. Rudeus...okay, I genuinely don't have a good opinion of him because of both the perverted side of him as a child and the niece episode. But Mushoku does treat his path progression as a person. Do I like it? No. Rudeus is the example of a person who was truly rock bottom at everything and makes mistakes but he is becoming a person as things go. I still think author is being weird about trying to push the Aisha/Nephew stuff so vehemently but let's remove those. Mushoku shows Rudeus struggling to understand family and friendship. His dirty past is serving as guilt to derive lessons from and being a better person. Subaru is unrealistic for forgiving everyone? So is Rudeus in my opinion because I wouldn't forgive Paul or Eris. But just like Subaru there is a reason we cannot relate to for that. Rudeus was petty and in his former life lashed out as a friend who tried to reconnect. He makes the effort for Paul. I can assure you I would never forgive my own father if what happened there to Rudeus happened to me. As for Eris, well it's spoiler for Anime onlies but there is a very special and unrelatable (but well done) reason as to why he eventually forgives her.

Subaru is a great character for his execution. He is frighteningly human too. He has insecurities but the issue is he quickly warps into something different. The witches themselves say it, he harbored thinking viler than any witch at one point. That does not make him unrelatable at all. People have the capacity to relate to movies with Robots as the main lead. I still remember thay damn speech in the palace where he embarassed himself and Emilia, not to mention the duel. It's so akward, so gut wrenching, yet you can understand him. He would be unrelatable if the story truly treated him as a mary sue who thought nothing of dying to save people. But it doesn't. At no point in the story does him dying become overlooked as a badass ability. The arcs where we thought it did were set ups to later be criticized for that.

I do not like Mushoku Tensei. I find Rudeus too unappealing. But it does not take away the story's quality. And the same goes for Re Zero who I hail as my favorite anime and one of my favorite Light Novel.

2

u/eritouya Newbie Aug 29 '26

Exactly. It's hard to hold onto grudges when the people who upset you die and suffer in miserable ways. Like for example one could hate Meili for pushing him down the stairs.

But after being strangled to death, her corpse getting thrown to the Mabeasts, getting a close look on her life story and all that. Can someone realistically still resent her after that?

Her bad actions got erased but so were his. They both deserve a chance to start from zero

We even saw some character development in the latest episode (S3E9) where he only glanced at the Rikarisu guild receptionist's cleavage, instead of his blatant leering in Season 1 E10.

Spoilers for Volume 17 of the LN

He's still not as perverted as the Nobles of Asura like Ariel and her love of Watersports and public acts

5

You dont have to argue that. Hes litterally still a pervert.

The point is he slowly stops being an absolute fuckhead. He goes from ahem, not so savory things on his pc, to only really looking at his wives. And it takes forever to get there. We mushoku fans need an olympic medal for putting up with it hahahah

12

u/Humble-Ad-5076 Regulus Said I Was Violating His Rights Aug 29 '26

Subaru becomes realistic when you finally meet someone that acts like Subaru. Subaru is pretty childish, but otherwise mature for his age. He's not some middle age old fogey but a young man with loving parents caught in a bad funk.

Next thing you know he's in fantasyland and can respawn when he dies. Horror aside, a guy like Subaru is what you get when an energetic kid who also happens to be pretty reliable meets a girl that constantly gets herself in trouble.

Even if they weren't in a land of witches amd monsters, Subaru would still feel compelled to help her, and Emilia would still take on more than she can chew, but that's the only way things'll change, so if she doesn't do it, who will? And if she can't do it alone, who'll help her? Subaru, of course.

33

u/Domadea I’m Dying Here, Where’s Ferris the Cat-Eared Femboy? Aug 28 '26

I would argue MT is more realistic in how it treats characters actions and morality.

As a fan of both Rezero often treats morality as black and white, even when it pretends or tries to emphasize that it doesn't.

But MT REALLY stressed that a majority of people aren't black or white. It implies that most people are gray.

22

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26

If Re:Zero treated morality that way, every single Vollachian divine general would have been executed by Subaru

3

u/OptimisticNayuta097 I Sleep More Than Rem (It’s Not a Competition, But I’m Winning) Aug 29 '26

Wouldn’t that also apply to characters like Rem or Garf or Melie who wronged him.

2

u/Fig_Char_Re Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 29 '26

That too.

3

u/DarkKechup I Joined the Witch Cult for the Sandwiches — No Regrets Aug 29 '26

That's what a really edgy person or a treenager would say. The general progression of maturing in regards to morality is:

  • Child: People are black and white, actions are black and white

  • Teenager: People are grey, actions are grey

  • Adult: People are grey - no such thing as good or bad person, but actions can definitely be black and white. Consistently choosing bad actions definitely speaks to a pattern of bad behavioiour and whataboutisms that tell other much better acting people "but you do bad things too, sometimes" dob't alleviate the severity of a person choosing the bad action consistently and frequently.

15

u/Electronic_Lab5486 Shared Suffering with Subaru Aug 29 '26

I disagree with the statement. There are characters like Priscilla, Wilhelm, Crusch, Felix, Anastasia, Roswaal and I would argue even Echidna are in the grey area. Echidna never wanted anything more than to learn. Roswaal only wanted her. But their own obsessions were the reason for their descent into the darkness. While MT shows most people are grey, ReZero shows there are consequences for every action. All of them had to pay for their deeds one way or another

11

u/AggravatingGarage620 Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 29 '26

More realistic doesn't necessarily mean better writing, and in this case, that applies perfectly.

That said, I think it's true. Not because I think Rudeus is very realistic (however realistic his attitudes or thoughts may be, he's still a super-powerful mage with ancestral royal connections, three wives who have no problem sharing him, and being "blessed" with the Laplace Factor), but because Subaru is an aspirational hero.Ā  Subaru is imperfect, but he's written so that the more he improves as a person, the more you, the reader, are inspired to improve as well.

Rem is so popular because her speech not only touched Subaru emotionally but also his fans, and THAT moment in Arc 6 is so good, among other things, because it's as if he were speaking directly to us.

One way to look at it is that Rudeus connects more with those who feel like failures in life or who wish to correct past mistakes and pull themselves out of the abyss. Subaru, on the other hand, wants to prevent you from falling into that abyss in the first place.

2

u/LeonardoJMB Newbie Aug 29 '26

Can confirm. I've experienced both situations and are still stuck between them but, yeah...

3

u/AggravatingGarage620 Made Lasagna for Garfiel Aug 29 '26

While I prefer Subaru and will continue to do so, time has helped me understand why Rudeus has so many fans. Beyond my personal preference, the desire to start over (and do it right) and the struggle with something as simple as leaving your house is something that, if you can relate to it, really hits home.

2

u/LeonardoJMB Newbie Aug 29 '26

Yep. There was a point in my life in which, if you didn't count the monthly-ish ocassion in which my mother would force me to go somewhere with her, I had not gone outside in about four years. And even then, the times i've actually wanted to go somewhere can be counted with one hand. I relate to Subaru a lot because of the actual reasons behind his situation, but Rudeus's situation and feelings are almost a 1:1 of what I've lived, if you remove the illegal part.

17

u/Nivek_Vamps Newbie Aug 28 '26

Rudeus is very much a real person you would find out in the real world, put in a very extraordinary circumstances and slowly rises to that level

Subaru is an extraordinary person who has low points but has a mental fortitude that I don't think is very realistic. The circumstances he is put into are beyond the pale and the fact that he is as sane as he is and can still overcome obstacles against extremely stacked odds is amazing. I know I would probably break after the 2nd horrible death or maybe I would last until the 2nd checkpoint but I doubt it

Saying "One is more realistic than the other" is like saying "This cashier is more realistic of a human than a lawyer". The fuck? People are different you know.

Subaru thinks that he is the savior. He sacrifices. He breaks. He gets motivated afterwards. Fully normal things. If you think that "Well I wouldnt do X", well, you might not go on a walk every morning as well. Does that mean that people who do are not a realistic representation of humans?

I think, Rudeus is overall more realistic than Subaru. Try to put your shoes in Subaru's position. Since I am not as forgiving, and won't choose death again and again, my choices would be different from Subaru.Ā

Ram and blue Ram are cute, sure. Yet, I don't think I will forgive them if they try kill me. At least, I'll try to not get involved with them.Ā

But, Subaru has a side which hit me really hard: his relationships with parents. I am not a shut-in tho. But IRL, I feel greatly overshadowed by my parents, and I also did bad things to them. The Subaru first trial part made me cry. Even rewatching those episodes still affect me.

While in the beginning I'd say their both (decently) realistic. Subaru is more of a optimist personafied and Rudy is just your average basement denizen. However at a certain point Subaru dies more then I think any human would be capable of handling. Even one death would probably break most people. I mean sure there might even be people who can handle hundreds of deaths, but realistically nobody could take dieing as much as he can. While Rudy is a accurate description of a pervert.

1

u/Hefty-Rushu Newbie Aug 29 '26

I feel like their both equally realistic in their own ways. Rudy's a guy who's filled with insecurities and was pushed by people into isolation to let his worst qualities fester until he became a maladjusted adult. Subaru is a kid that wears himself thin trying to appeal to a certain image he thinks people expect from him, and when it stresses him out he bottles up his feelings and tries to deal with it on his own while not even considering the people around him. Just because they're both NEETs doesn't mean that they have to represent the same kind of person.Ā

Rudeus is in almost every way, there is no neurotypical person alive or dead who could experience everything Subaru has, and not go insane running away screaming. And all of the psychopaths/sociopaths who wouldn't go insane, wouldn't dedicate themselves so wholly to someone like Emilia and not try to manipulate her to their advantage.

Rudeus is fucked up, he does bad things and goes through depression and mental torment because of what he does and happens around him. Something Subaru doesn't really get often because of how his mind works and how he thinks of himself as disposable.

1

u/jgthorns Newbie Aug 29 '26

Subaru is an enigma. While I hate him as a cringelord and think he’s the opposite of cool, he is sort of mentally the ideal human.

In a sense, he’s a typical shounen character with unshakeable mental fortitude and an understanding of the world yet the ideals and optimism of a hopeful innocent child.. kind of like superman and goku. In reality, most people are one or the other.. as both mindsets are almost oil and water. But Subaru is unique in a sense that we see step-by-step how deeply he builds that character and what trials or what anguish it would realistically take to be that sort of person.

Rudeus is not an ideal person at all. He’s morally grey (and imo, still an irredeemable degenerate) and not everyone ever faces any retribution. He was never punished and never learned from his real (moral) mistakes. He instead goes on to grow happier and simply learn how to (selfishly)live a life he ought to live, no matter the risk… aka being a normal human.

Basically, Subaru grows to be a remarkable character, showing the trials it takes to be that. Rudeus grows to be a completely unremarkable character, showing the trials it takes for someone like him to simply be normal.

Subaru may be the lolimancer but at least he didn’t put a spy camera in his niece’s shower

Cause Subaru is what Rent-A-Girlfriend would be as an Isekai.

I think Rudy having many negative traits does make him feel more "realistic."

MT letting us listen in on Rudy's intrusive thoughts, while often uncomfortable, is interestingly realistic. We all have intrusive thoughts, but most PEOPLE, let alone media, kinda like to pretend that aspect of humanity doesn't exist, or greatly downplays it. Not excusing Rudy btw, I agree he has a pretty sick mind and I have definitely have... uh... concerns about the MT author.

Subaru simply doesn't really have that many negative traits. He had more in S1, but it feels like any negatives about Subaru are pretty minimized. Natsuki Subaru is an amazing guy, after all.
