I mean, I kinda get it, Subaru is an awesome guy, but almost nobody would be like him in those circumstances. Meanwhile Rudy is a pretty realistic depiction of a basement dweller

Except no basement dweller would actually behave like this. Because Rudeus is very notably NOT dwelling in a basement.

Rudeus is as unrealistic as Subaru in that regard, just in the opposite direction.

How does a basement dweller behave? How does Rudeus behave?  Notice an overlap? I don't.

Insecure, avoiding human contact, socially awkward, passive.

Pre-death he was lazy, fat and barely getting up from watching porn and video-games. Post rebirth he runs around stealing panties, training, reading a textbook and doing diligent practice. Sounds like a 180 to me.

There is a reason he didnt default to video games or porn. No electronics. Books were all he could get. Maybe he coulda slacked with friends if not for the fear of a repeat of his first childhood. The training was something Paul forced on him if I'm not mistaken. I imagine boredom also played a role.

Rudeus behave like a creep, not a basement dweller.

Seriously, how can people look at a fat porn addict who doesn't leave his home and be like "Yep, that's the guy to be comfortable around strangers, do sword training and then practice magic in his free time".

Why does he have a new body? Besides, he didn't leave the house until he had developed further.
