I’ve been thinking about this because of a friend of mine who’s in her mid-40s and going through a lot right now. Honestly, watching her deal with everything makes me feel so grateful that I’m single.
She married her husband when he was still pretty young, partly because her parents pressured her to get married. Her husband has a son from his first marriage. He wanted to be a dad so badly back then but his previous marriage ended in divorce because his ex-wife was supposedly a narcissist.
Fast forward to today, and his son is 25. He was raised by his grandma on his mom’s side and, from what my friend tells me, he’s pretty spoiled. He doesn’t want to work, just plays Nintendo, and keeps asking his dad for money without wanting to help out with his dad’s business.
My friend actually helps her husband with his business, so she’s already putting in work. But now she also has to deal with the problems his son keeps creating. The son borrowed money to buy a used car, and the car ended up having a bunch of problems. More money, more stress, and more headaches for his dad.
And that’s not even everything she’s dealing with.
She’s renting a small apartment with four other roommates, all older men, who don’t clean up after themselves. The kitchen, bathroom, living room, and balcony are often left dirty. Sometimes they even bring people over to play poker.
She’s also going through perimenopause, barely sleeping five hours a night, and has high blood pressure. She has to work to pay for her two kids’ college expenses, and on top of that, she’s dealing with her MIL dementia.
I honestly don’t know how she handles all of this. I feel so bad for her because she’s dealing with so many things at once, and there’s only so much I can do to help.
It got me thinking about how nobody really warns you about these things before you get married.
Everyone talks about love, companionship, and building a life together, but what about the possibility of dealing with your partner’s irresponsible adult children, financial problems, difficult in-laws, or family responsibilities that never seem to end?
You might marry someone you love, but you don’t always know what you’re signing up for when it comes to their family.
Watching my friend go through all this makes me appreciate my single life even more. I live alone, have my own space, and don’t have to deal with someone else’s family drama on top of my own problems. Of course, being single has its downsides too, but at least I have more control over my own life and peace of mind.
I’m not saying all marriages are like this, and I know there are happy, healthy marriages out there. But I do think people should talk more honestly about the realities of marriage instead of just focusing on the romantic side.
Honestly mental health is very important. I’m blessed being single and living independently without dealing with such a shitty people.
