From the actual story: "There were double red flag warnings issued before the tragedy occurred, but because the family is not familiar with the area, no one recognized what they meant."
For those unaware, No flag = low risk, Yellow flag = moderate risk, Red flag = High risk, do not swim, Double Red flag = VERY high risk, do not swim or be in the water. Lifeguards are not allowed in the water on double Red flag days due to their own personal risk.
Generally double Red flag days look like the ocean is going to explode on you with large irregular waves. Its visibly unsafe.

u/Lehotredditeur 9h ago
I think red flag is an universal sign of sea danger.
45
u/Diditanyway 8h ago
Perhaps they thought it just meant the sea wasn't a great candidate for the dating pool

u/__Banshee 7h ago
If I recall correctly, they were on a private beach that did not have warning flags. In addition, the current intensified quickly that day.
4
u/texaspoontappa93 7h ago
Powerful waves dont always look all that turbulent, especially if you're naive to the ocean/beach.
I've surfed for decades and I've still had moments where the waves are significantly bigger and heavier than I thought I was getting myself into
Ripcurrents too, you dont need big choppy waves to get sucked out to sea

Why is died censored? Also what a harrowing story.
180
u/Educational-Seaweed5 18h ago
Because it’s dystopian hellscape 2026 where censorship bots that can’t discern context are running rampant.
It’s why people on video platforms like YT are scared to say “ass” or “killed” on their videos, instead using code words like “ahh” and “unalived.”
We live in a clown timeline.
46
2
u/Banana2358 12h ago
I mean when most video games for example delete your entire message or censor two words in front and two before if you write ass you gotta improvise.
4
u/Iggyhopper 17h ago
Definitely. I posted that Trump can be booted with the amendment 25, in other, more harsh words, and I got banned.
I had to appeal for a human to look at my comment and realize no I did not mean the obviously terrible and wrong thing. I really meant amendment 25.
Bots are stupid and yes in this timeline we have to censor words.

Feels like the next generation will not know what have of the words mean. They'd read the new a person was raped and then died and be like - Im not sure i know what any of this means. Anyway, whats for lunch?
29
u/SoupEfficient563 9h ago
I have three daughters. I can guarantee you that man died happy knowing his kids were safe.

u/MrNobody_0 8h ago
I have a daughter, and I would absolutely die for her, but I sure wouldn't be happy about it.

u/ndheritage 12h ago
No, he was declared dead in the ambulance
3
u/E-raticProphet 11h ago
OMG are you serious? I can’t believe it! Why didn’t they fully reveal this information in the information in the post?
95
u/Hobbes09R 18h ago
His last words were as he was rescuing one, as I recall. He drowned while pulling them to a board and was declared dead on the way to the hospital when CPR failed.
I hate stories like these. We like to celebrate heroics, particularly from family and the like. What stories like these often don't tell you is the mitigating circumstances. Like the fact that there were two red flags out and nobody was supposed to be swimming to begin with. Too often we praise heroics when those heroics were only possible due to earlier incompetence. The praise should be to those who went out, saw the flags, and warned their family not to swim that day because conditions were dangerous, because they didn't put anyone's life at risk.
38
u/nunyabidness3 13h ago
I’ll tell you something about heroes, the need for a hero is nearly always due to incompetence, neglect, ignorance and sometimes malice. That’s what makes a hero a hero. In this case, they’re all dumb. But I cannot think of a better death for a father. Stupidity be damned.

I can think of so many betters ways to go out than from drowning, at a relatively young age, due to completely preventable circumstances. This story has been circulating for years and all of these repost titles are garbage.

He dipped on the way to the hospital, leaving those last words, and was never seen again.
2
u/PuddingMent 18h ago
How did he become unconscious after he saved them? That’s not how drowning works.
14
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 18h ago
Most likely went into cardiac arrest after over-exertion and extreme stress.
7
u/sandwichcrusader 17h ago
A cup of water in the lungs can kill hours later.
Not saying this is how he died, but drowning is complicated.
4
u/Electronic_Still2000 17h ago
I aspirated less than a cup and I needed to be intubated before being put in a medical coma for two weeks on a respirator. After two weeks they needed to cut into my trachea to keep me on a respirator safely. They were ready to perform the procedure to make the switch when they tested if I could breathe on my own again and apparently it was a real long shot that I would be able to considering my condition, but I got lucky. Now, over two years later I still have breathing and oxygenation issues. All from less than
a cup of fluid that I aspirated.3
u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14h ago
What did you drink and how did it happen?
2
u/Electronic_Still2000 4h ago
I was very sick and a coughing fit combined with throwing up stomach acid got me. Thankfully I hadn’t eaten in a few days so I didn’t aspirate any solids, but even just a couple of ounces messed me up big time.

u/BeneficialSolution43 17h ago
He rescued three people without any aid? One person is alrdy hard enuff to pull back to safety. Two is near impossible. This story doesn make sense.
1
u/graboidgraboid 9h ago
Maybe. No. Can’t be. Actually. No. Impossible. Hell, I’m just gonna come right out and say it- HE RESCUED ONE AT A TIME! Jeez, I can’t believe I figured that one out! 🤦🏻♂️
