I just went back to Europe for the first time in 4 years.

4 years ago, I do not remember water bottles having that. But on this trip, they all did. And I hated it.

I hope you'll manage to recover and overcome this pain in time

The scars will heal but the memories will haunt.

You can do it right, and you can do it wrong. Some countries and companies do it very good and it's actually useful, some other apparently hate their customers.

The push was introduced in 2019 and made mandatory in 2024. I moved to Belgium (my third time in Europe) in 2020 the bottles - plastics and glass - did not have the attached caps. It was around late 2021 to early 2022 when they started to appear.

By the time I left the country before it offically became mandatory, the attached caps were on every bottle.

2

u/EchoChamberTech 2h ago

Oh that's actually interesting to me. Mandatory by who?

3

u/KSHMisc 2h ago

Mandatory by the European Union. It is an initiative called the Single Use Plastics Initiative (EU 2019/904).

2

u/EchoChamberTech 2h ago

Fascinating. Had no idea.

1

u/KSHMisc 2h ago

Yep. Even when I had moved back to the US in 2024, I found myself leaving the cap on the attach-thingies when I opened it.

Also, there are initiatives in some states to introduce the tethered caps here.

Plus glass can be recycled over and over. Plastic isn't

We all hate it. But it's just a couple of extra twists to break it off.

*cries in universal healthcare*

I'm sorry to hear that bro

Thank you for your concern. Send flowers.

the first one i tried i sorta mangled it (it wasn't just a regular twist). once I figured it out it's convenient. i flicked a cap across the room first water bottle I opened back in the us

u/PunishedChud 2h ago

Why do you hate it I actually can’t understand it. Drank from them just fine and liked out the cap stayed on

2

u/EchoChamberTech 2h ago

I honestly had no idea this would generate so much discussion. Some people are very passionate lol (not saying you are).

I just prefer it to detach.

Exactly of you don’t like them you can just twist them of takes almost no effort or time and doesn’t leave you liable for anything.

It tends to attack your face while drinking from the bottle. It's annoying.

2

u/TheHelpfulSpy 2h ago

I don't like that they slap me in the face, and I need to keep track of where it is when i move my face closer to drink.

But then again, they're hella easy to just rip off, so it's a small inconvenience. Once you rip it off, it's a normal lid again.

1

u/LouisV_Abrezol 1h ago

Yeah it looks extremely annoying. Why can’t people just not litter? Why do we have to babysit adults?

1

u/philthy_barstool 1h ago

Because people are pretty shit on the whole, so preventing them from being shit is easier than convincing them

1

u/Splith 44m ago

If you find it annoying, don't use plastic bottles unless you need it. Do you have a water bottle? On the scale of society you get less plastic in the drinking water or public parks I'd you keep the bottle and cap together.

I live in the US and took a holiday to Bonaire last summer and was so very confused by this. But once I figured out what was going on, I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

1

u/mistermh07 21m ago

you can give it a little twist so the plastic snaps a bit and hold it away with your index finger. i prefer this since i don't have to worry about holding the cap, and its not really in the way if you do what i described

1

u/thecakeisalienunoit 6h ago

It's so easy to remove still, and for people who know how to move the cap to the side, it just keeps it on the bottle, and not in the environment. It might not make all that much of a difference, but it adds up to a considerate mindset in those with minds.

Well adapt then

1

u/Fantastic-Mud-9869 4h ago

Even monkeys can do it.

3

u/st1802015 4h ago

Assuming they’re American though that’s probably a few levels above their ability.

1

u/EchoChamberTech 3h ago

Where did I say I couldn't do it?

1

u/Fantastic-Mud-9869 3h ago

Then what is your problem with it?

1

u/EchoChamberTech 3h ago

I just didn't like it. I prefer the cap to fully detach. And yes, I just did that anyways. Not sure why people are dying on a hill over a cap lol.

1

u/Fantastic-Mud-9869 3h ago

Probably hate does have a stronger meaning over here than in your place.

1

u/EchoChamberTech 3h ago

Fair enough.

1

u/Apart-Move-9954 3h ago

great, stay in America

-1

u/EchoChamberTech 3h ago

Coming back in Feb. And South America in December.

No thanks. Y'all need my money.

1

u/eToTheEyeSpy 2h ago

Good to see the septic living up to their reputation

0

u/SausageClatter 6h ago

I can't speak for Europe, but bottles in America have had those for decades.

0

u/EchoChamberTech 6h ago

Wait wut? Where? I am in USA and have never seen it lol.

2

u/SausageClatter 5h ago

Maybe I'm missing something about what's pictured, but isn't this just the ring that comes with every milk jug or plastic soda bottle? The one that causes me to curse under my breath as it scratches my pinky before I rip it off and toss it in the trash?

2

u/12-idiotas 5h ago

It’s a ring that prevents separating the bottle from the cap and weirdos make a big fuss about it.

1

u/EchoChamberTech 5h ago

Ah. Yes. You are missing it.

The lid stays attached to that ring. So in Europe, the lid hinges because it only separates from that seal about 90%. Then you unscrew it, and flip it back on the hinge, which is the last 10% of the plastic still attached.

1

u/SausageClatter 5h ago

I see that. The ones on the milk jugs get stuck too. I always have to twist more to pull them all way off...
