the bottlecap was annoying for five minutes and now I rather have it than not.

19

u/Turbulent_Tax2126 2h ago

Honestly, it’s so nice to not have to hold it and keep track of it. It just stay with the bottle at all times. It’s actually nice now

10

u/Poyri35 1h ago

Genuinely, does it even actually bother anyone? I cannot think of a single time where it hindered my experience or capability to drink from it

It’s good for me, since I can’t lose or drop the cap, so I don’t have to finish the drink at that moment

It’s good for the environment, since plastic caps won’t fly off to god knows where, chocking turtles and shit

It’s a win-win really

4

u/krobzik 1h ago

Yes, for something like yoghurt or protein drinks, where you want to shake them first, the drink stuck to the lid will end up dripping on your face or clothes when you tip the bottle to drink. I tear them off first with those bottles.

5

u/Poyri35 1h ago

Fair point, I don’t really drink those types of drinks, so they didn’t come to my mind. Thank you!

You can probably scoop it with your finger, but I can see how that would be a hygiene issues

I just twist it a bit so it doesn't poke my face (still hangs on by one strand instead of two), or just yank it off and put it back on when I'm done.

How much fucking money was deposited to make a piece of shit car fly for a couple of seconds

They basically used the stabilization from SpaceX mixed with the old compress air gimmick that was used in the 1984 Olympics, which only work for very short flights because you quickly run out of compressed Nitrogen after a couple of seconds, which is a technology from the cutting edge 1960s. It's great to make a visual stunt but you need to constantly recharge the nitrogen canisters each time the feature is used to impress your friends for a couple of seconds.

18

u/Googleitgenius 3h ago

It's all nonsense. That vehicle was built on a lightweight composite frame—essentially just a big, light shell with no battery or other systems. But the Musk fanboys think they'll be flying next year, lol.

10

u/_kissyface 1h ago

It's also a flying bomb that would literally vaporise the driver if it exploded.

I wrote something similar. I agree. He could be doing so many good things, like all the other top billionaires. They would still make money, just not as much. This is a disease. In this kind of world, to be able to sleep at night while children die of starvation daily, while at the same time growing your own wealth by a degree of billions, is lunacy.

8

u/Sorreljorn 1h ago

The thing is they just don't care. They lack empathy and genuinely don't care about those children. How else do you become that successful if you had a shred of morality?

As someone who lives in and loves the EU: That shi is not “wildly useful” 💔 just a nuisance and pointless since 99% of people already didn’t lose their caps. Definitely one of the worst things they ever implemented

16

u/tancfire 4h ago

Why are people triggered by a fucking cap attached to the bottle ? Perosnaly, it didn't affect my life, lmao

8

u/Conscious_Battle6708 3h ago

German here.
The problem is that it generated significant costs for companies to implement this shit. It also creates tradebarriers with foreign entities. For example, swiss companies still have the normal caps, and they cant participate in the EU market if they dont change. Less competition is unhealthy.

Moreover, this whole story smells like corruption. I would not be surprised if some buddy of an EU parlamentarian earned alot with this utter bs.

9

u/AffectionateJump7896 2h ago

Surely the Swiss, like the UK, just comply with the EU regulation to avoid needing separate stock, production lines etc. for an individual market?

Hilarious that in the UK we nuked our economy and left the EU because we didn't like the level of regulation, and we still end up following it anyway.

You know the WWW and the internet aren't the same thing right?

The Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing. The Internet—the underlying network connecting computers globally—was developed earlier (starting in the late 1960s with ARPANET). Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, which is an application running on top of the Internet that allows us to view web pages, media, and navigate via hyperlinks.

u/sonicparadigm 5h ago

The technology to make cheap flying cars has been around since the 70s. It's just that... well... you know how bad drivers are on the ground, imagine how much worse it could get if you added the Y-axis

12

u/flyinhighaskmeY 4h ago

u/MintyFresh771 5h ago

This is just performative and dumb. Drop a modern car 10’ onto concrete and then inspect it for road worthiness, it will likely fail.

Making a car fly with absolutely no requirement to make it road safe is simple. Any company could do this, hell this demo could have been done with a few oxygen cylinders from welding shops and a cheap tack welded shell. Making it able to pass safety requirements, take off, LAND in non-static testing scenarios, and maintain roadworthy status though? Lemme see that.

7

u/Life_of1103 4h ago

And, considering who built it, not burst into flames.

7

u/ProtectionTop2701 4h ago

"we added extra fuel and explosives to our car that sometimes catches on fire. Please pay us more money."

2

u/MissResaRose 4h ago

Those are monopropellant RCS thrusters like they have been used in space travel for decades. They use compressed gases (here compressed air, nitrogen in space) as fuel. So this isn't burning but it brings extra air into a fire of burning metal (=making it burn even hotter and faster). Also they used a pressure of 10k psi which would rip apart any car with its driver when exploding from a structural failure, like one caused by a crash.

8

u/SilverPhilosopher46 4h ago

The whole concept of thrusters will of course never be road legal. In this case, they must be producing about 10 kN each. If you are walking, bicycling or whatever next to it, you also get that 10kN in your face. Kinda like as if a fireman sprays you point blank, but with 10x more force.

4

u/MintyFresh771 3h ago

Imagine the first time thrusters fail to fire at the same time and you yeet your car into a 6g barrel roll in afternoon traffic.

Official EU statistics is that we had ~450 million ppl in the EU and ~3950 homicides total in 2023. Thats's about 0.88 per 100 000

The same statistic for the US was at 5.9 per 100 000 in 2023.

Quantum computing is Europe's advantage, but just not in the news a lot. Frontier physics? Europe. Nuclear Fusion? Europe. MAB cancer treatments? Europe. Genetic therapies? Europe. And China is building the first production molten salt reactor based off of work done... in Europe.

Which of the two is banning chinese cars out of fear again?

4

u/FinishComplex3743 4h ago

It's not out of fear, it's economic protectionism and every country on earth does it for something.

Yeah I’m American but this is just dumb. It’s just a prop car and Tesla stock crashed as it released

One * exists * is proven to work * solves an actual problem * prevents the waste of resources and keeps the environment slightly cleaner with minimal effort

The other * fictional spectacle for shareholders * works only once for a show * useless and pointless * unnecessarily wastes ressources

Do people have an issue of losing the cap to their water?

21

u/Venoxulous 6h ago

No, it was an issue where people wouldnt recycle the pieces together.

Edit: It is incredibly fucking annoying to drink from now too

9

u/Svitii 5h ago

See that‘s the point I never got: Who tf does not keep them together? Like the cap‘s on the bottle, you remove it to drink/pour the liquid into a different container and put the cap back on. Why would I ever separate the bottle from the cap?

3

u/username_997 5h ago

Stupid people need additional features so their stupidity doesn't prevail. Why do you think there is a note on bleach that one shouldn't drink it?

5

u/kRe4ture 5h ago

Bullshit. At the beginning it was annoying, now the bottles have a mechanism for the cap to stay fully opened, and it‘s great.

2

u/gokarrt 5h ago

interesting. they won't recycle the caps here.

everyone is bashing on the attached cap ... yeah , it creates a bit of inconvenience, but long term it reduces littering, also there are also rules for corporations, they are no longer allowed to "export" the waste to non EU-countries.
after the measures were implemented and enforcement improved, the litter on beaches fell significantly.

on the other hand , that roaster is .. what ... 7-8 years delayed (if they do manage to produce it in 2028 ... ), a car for rich pricks ... after the garbage dumpster failed spectacularly. And was launched probably because the wannabe pedo (musk) needed some media attention before elections there ...

6

u/PooBakery 5h ago

And is it really inconvenient? When this came out I used to be annoyed but now every time I travel outside the EU I don't know what to do with the cap while I drink. So annoying to have to keep it in your hand and so being unable to do anything else with that hand.

The moment flying cars become street (or rather air space) legal where I live I'll start building high-energy EMP emitters...

5

u/Adventurous_Touch342 3h ago

American innovation a.k.a. a lie - shit wasn't a car, just exterior launched forward with a gyro and small propellers that would never lift an actual car, let alone EV which tend to be heavier.

u/EchoChamberTech 5h ago

I just went back to Europe for the first time in 4 years.

4 years ago, I do not remember water bottles having that. But on this trip, they all did. And I hated it.

7

u/pulsarstarter 1h ago

I hope you'll manage to recover and overcome this pain in time

3

u/EchoChamberTech 1h ago

The scars will heal but the memories will haunt.

2

u/KSHMisc 2h ago

The push was introduced in 2019 and made mandatory in 2024. I moved to Belgium (my third time in Europe) in 2020 the bottles - plastics and glass - did not have the attached caps. It was around late 2021 to early 2022 when they started to appear.

By the time I left the country before it offically became mandatory, the attached caps were on every bottle.

2

u/EchoChamberTech 2h ago

Oh that's actually interesting to me. Mandatory by who?

3

u/KSHMisc 1h ago

Mandatory by the European Union. It is an initiative called the Single Use Plastics Initiative (EU 2019/904).

2

u/EchoChamberTech 1h ago

Fascinating. Had no idea.

2

u/Informal_Golf8867 5h ago

Out of all the things you could choose you chose a water bottle cap retainment system?

2

u/UpstairsGrand9539 5h ago

Lmao when I was in Europe I got so fed up with those caps I would just twist it off.

2

u/Dracoxidos 5h ago

Cool. Now how much fuel did they burn to make the car jump while gas prices are at $5 a gallon.

2

u/Ok-Boysenberry-2955 4h ago

Odd that he does that just as his documentary comes out.

2

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 4h ago

if I was looking at putting something in space, I’d probably feel pretty good about trusting SpaceX 🤷

He clearly just asked them to make his car fly lol

I hear it takes five hours to fill the tanks. 😂

u/SoupZillaMan 2h ago

Also, one benefits the planet and this other is a threat to it.

2

u/ExpertOwn7301 56m ago

Only one of these is useful

2

u/Mundane-Taste1945 17m ago

One more perspective:

The lid: initially looks like a nightmare, until the practicality becomes apparent and then you don’t want to give it up.

The car: initially looks fun until you a) realise it is smoke in mirrors and b) even if it wasn’t you imagine the traffic jam and two cars doing this but from opposing direction. Thanks but no thanks.

8

u/Significant-Roll-138 6h ago

Most Europeans couldn’t give a fuck about either of these things, the Tesla gimmick is the most cringe thing I’ve seen in a long time.

One saves plastic waste, the other is fucking useless

4

u/ConclusionAnxious706 4h ago

The bottle cap innovation is better for recycling. Has more impact on environment and waste management.

That car is just a circus for investors and influencers to promote. Nobody is going to be able to get those rocket things.

5

u/emperorsyndrome 4h ago

true.

the flying car is useless.

One is shareholder spectacle and the other is climate spectacle.

4

u/QuotableMorceau 6h ago

a climate spectacle that works ... beach littering was reduced like 40% since measures were implemented, sure it's not 99.9% reduction ... but it's better than nothing,... and the good thing it benefits the general population in public place, not pricks on private islands.

2

u/Emergency-Watch5157 5h ago

Great! (I‘m a fan of the bottle tops to be clear)

But, to be clear, we probably should just get rid of the plastic bottles all together

2

u/QuotableMorceau 4h ago

it's basically impossible now, as there is nothing that comes close to plastic versatility .... but humanity was able to reach 99% recycling of lead acid batteries ...

4

u/Eaglise 6h ago

all i see is two useless innovations

3

u/Torakkk 5h ago

One is actually helping planet. Maybe its throwing a glass of water on forest fire. But better then nothing. https://www.packaginginsights.com/news/tethered-caps-impact-pollution-packaging.html

3

u/FarukAlatan 5h ago

Kösters indicates that KHS is not aware of any reports that show the effect of the tethered caps on the reduction of plastic waste, citing a probable lack of data to show a decisive trend-change. He expects more studies to be published in the next few months.

Groot, on the other hand, finds fewer bottle caps in the environment during litter picking sessions. He acknowledges that this might be because of the Netherlands’ DRS.

“The DRS for plastic bottles was introduced in 2021, which led to an 80% decrease in bottles in litter. As a result, the number of caps found in 2023 had already dropped by 24%,” he says.

“The number of bottles hasn’t decreased further since then, but the number of caps has — I’m now finding 47% fewer caps.”

Doesn't seem all that conclusive. And if the number of bottles hasn't decreased but the number of caps has, is that just because the caps are still attached to the bottles and don't get counted?

Go take a look at something called operation paperclip. American innovation fuelled by Nazis. Maybe also take a look at the global inventions that came out of Scotland alone, a country of 5m people.

4

u/backhand_snipe 5h ago

I think people forget that innovations are cumulative. The ability to do this with a car is going to lead to other innovations that people might have never have even thought of not gonna lie. This was definitely a party trick, but I’m very curious to see where this goes in my lifetime.
