Tethered bottle caps have been a thing since the 1980s, the EU is just mandating them. That's not particularly innovative.

Tethered bottle caps suck. They get in the way of drinking and if you rip them off they leave sharp edges sometimes. Are ppl really so scatterbrained they're losing their bottle caps? This has never been a problem I've ever thought about until I went to Europe.

It's not because people lose them, it's to reduce the plastic bottle caps getting into the water.
