And should I get started on vaccines (that Americans are stupidly shedding out), Pasteurization (that Americans are advocating against) or maybe the literal microscope? The field of Genetics? Dare I even mention Botilinum toxin they are filling their faces with at the White house? The list is endless. And this is only in my field (medicine)
mRNA vaccines were developed in the US, which is the underlying technology that allowed the creation of the COVID vaccine.
American scientists also created PrEP. In our lifetime, HIV has gone from a death sentence to something you just take a pill for.
CRISPR, one of the most important discoveries in microbiology in the past two decades, was a joint discovery by an American and a Frenchwoman.
And while the Trump administration is stupid af, vaccines are not being "shedded out" nor is pasteurization, not by a long shot. Their stupidity is being resisted at many levels, and anything they do change is likely to be reversed in 2028.
Here's some relevant papers / collections of papers that I found with a cursory search.
This is not to say that Europeans don't produce good science or good medicine (semaglutide goes to the Danish!), but modern American medical research is truly incredible.
I do not deny American contribution for sure; despite it being relatively recent when compared to others, I firmly believe that every country contributed to medicine at a certain point in time with wildly various forms that complement each other and enabled others to exist. But I was trying to convey how the American medical system has been crushing during Trump; both in the eyes of their public (examples above; anti-vax, raw milk trends, etc) and financially (even PubMed had a banner complaining of funding cuts for quite a while) and this resulted in promoting corporate fanfics and a public opinion that doesnt realize what this literally burnt money could have done if directed towards, e.g. the medical sector (both these consequences are demonstrated quite perfectly in OOP post)
Have a nice day, and feel free to discuss any take here 👍
My main disagreement, then, is over the characterization of it as being "crushed" - while the Trump administration has been disastrous, I think the medical research system is far more resilient than you imply.
It's a rough time, to be sure. But we'll weather the storm, and 2028 will almost certainly see something of a return to normalcy, at least for a while.
I do wish you are right; social media is an inherently biased source to make an impression but from where I am it’s my only one. I hope that it’s less disastrous on the ground there as you are a much more reliable source, as it would make me more optimistic about the field’s direction after half a decade of catastrophic events from Covid to this day…
