Tf are they protesting?

They say about schools. France doesn’t have money apparently to fund both schools and the country very generous pensions. I believe the pension they give at the moment is above the average wage and their retirement age is low. Add in an aging population and the money for pensions have to come from somewhere. I think the pension spending of the French government is like 10 to 12? Percent of their gdpz

u/That_Seasonal_Fringe 5h ago

This is the first generation of average retired having better living conditions than average working people.

6

u/Financial-Desk-669 5h ago

"heh heh Godamn right." - Boomers

3

u/Wayoutofthewayof 5h ago

The ironic thing is that the youths started rioting when they tried to raise the retirement age.

4

u/Suitable-Block-2854 4h ago

They are thinking long term. The only way they can endure their current suffering is the hope they can retire some day. Now they are told their sentence has been extended, and opens up the precedent it will be extended again before they reach it.

1

u/Wayoutofthewayof 4h ago

So why aren't they happy to have a majority of their paycheks used to fund these programs if they want them?

They have quite literally the most expensive retirement welfare system in history of human civilization right now already.

1

u/Ocelotofdamage 4h ago

People live longer. You can’t have that balance shift without increasing retirement as well.

1

u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X 1h ago

But it is not if you roll over.

14

u/Valuable-Ad7285 5h ago

The retirement age and pensions are 100% the problems. They are well under the average in Europe. Combine that with an aging population and a yearly €60 BILLION (growing to €120B atm) spend on depth interest alone. France is fucked.

4

u/thestridereststrider 4h ago

Yup. It’s either debt crisis or cuts to government spending. It’s political suicide to make cuts so no one has.

2

u/GeneralMuffins 4h ago

I mean, it won’t be. Governments/parties pursuing austerity tend to be quite popular at the ballot box during times of economic stress.

2

u/Comrade_Midin 3h ago

The issue is that the possible austerity measures politically do not include cutting pensions, that would hurt the main part of the electorate which is behind the success of Macron and the liberal parties

1

u/Sayyestononsense 41m ago

weren't they protesting like hell not long ago when it was proposed to move the minimum age for pensions a bit further? It was not 10 years, I remember it wasn't more than 2. Which, honestly, can make sense if the population is healthier for longer (which in turn makes you live longer and receive a pension for longer as well)

1

u/jaunesolo81829 40m ago

They moved the age of retirement from 62 to 64 like 3 years ago.

1

u/random1751484 5h ago

There is a lot of refugees outside the “school” age involved in these “protests”

5

u/Alternative-Cat4143 5h ago

No there are not. Most of these falling apart schools are in underserved urban and suburban areas with high immigrant populations. So a lot of the students are 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th + generation from Northern Africa. Just because they have dark skin doesn't mean they are refugees.

Keep in mind that France colonized several countries in Northern Africa. And not even that long ago: my husband's entire family (white, catholic) ALL grew up in Morocco. If you go to Tunisia, Algeria, or Morocco - they all speak French there. So it makes perfect sense to have people from those places in France.

1

u/random1751484 5h ago

But why are they waiving their national (not French) flags when they are protesting against local French policies?

1

u/Alternative-Cat4143 4h ago

My dear, do you believe that every photo you see on the news or on social media is a 100% comprehensive, fully accurate portrayal of every single protest that is going on? Have you ever considered that maybe, certain images are selected in order to enrage gullible people like you?

1

u/FlimsyUmbrella 4h ago

Care to explain this video of an ambulance being destryoed?

1

u/jaunesolo81829 4h ago

I mean they were on live tv looting a clothing store. And a 22 year old apparently just died from falling from the arc de triomphe.

0

u/PopOutG 5h ago

Why do you quote it like it’s not the actual problem? What do you say they’re protesting about?

4

u/nadhari12 4h ago

Protesting? That's a riot.

16

u/CheesecakeWitty5857 5h ago

That’s not the protest. That’s on the side of it, the “breakers” (casseurs) also called black blocks.
no one cares why they do that, so no one knows why, beside that they hate the police, which explains nothing.
Basically like a domestic terrorism and it’s management.

15

u/moisturized69tatas 5h ago

France is going broke. And education budgets inflation adjusted have been slashed for a long time and now France is spending more money on their military, students want better education not more tanks. But these people are just destroying shit because they want to.

5

u/Reddragon0585 5h ago

But like don’t they need to be spending more on the military due to the imposing threat from Russia?

1

u/Comrade_Midin 3h ago

What threat from Russia ?

3

u/Reddragon0585 3h ago

They are super aggressive and have been increasingly toying with the rest of Europe with drones. They just shot one down in Romania.

1

u/diedlikeCambyses 3h ago

Are you telling me the pants on heads Russian army that can't take Ukraine is going to charge through Nato countries into France? Do you really think they'd fight Nato. If they tried to add even Poland they'd grind to a halt. And by then they're fighting Germany, France, UK, Italy Spain, Greece, Canada, and possibly fucking America

2

u/woman-aper 2h ago

France needs to start pulling their weight in nato and stop letting the US decide everything because they're the only ones spending

For Europe to be independent of the USA it must have its own military

1

u/diedlikeCambyses 2h ago

100% but increased military spending when you can't afford to not piss off your people around education, pensions, taxes etc. It is a slippery slope. Can't fault it as a stand alone statement though

1

u/mBuc_Official 3h ago

They don't need to fight NATO. They just need to flip the main countries and it's over. Like Trump in US, Le Pen in France, AfD in Germany, etc...

0

u/diedlikeCambyses 3h ago

France is not under threat from Russia ffs.

-4

u/CaptainTripps82 5h ago

I think they're doing it because they're angry, not because they want to

6

u/Valuable-Ad7285 5h ago

If you think this is about school, yeah right….

0

u/CaptainTripps82 5h ago

Literally didn't say that

1

u/Valuable-Ad7285 4h ago

Wrong reply. Agree. Sorry.

-3

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 5h ago

Its France. They do this every few months, and they do it until the government concedes.

Only country in the world that actually protests to hold the govt to account and you're so anti-democracy you disregard the possibility that they could actually believe in a cause.

3

u/False_Scarcity_3402 5h ago

The protesters in France are dumb. They can’t afford schools because they spend too much on pensions but they protest/vote against reform. They’re going bankrupt because the people are lazy and entitled.

0

u/Brilliant-Smile-8154 5h ago

Let's not pretend you have the first clue what you are talking about. You are just repeating dumb shit you have read online.

2

u/False_Scarcity_3402 5h ago edited 4h ago

The IMF said the same thing in other words. France is living above its means and their pension system is unsustainable- they’re losing credibility in bond markets. Politicians in any country can lie, but bond markets don’t.

-1

u/Tone-ded 5h ago

IMF is in favour of cutting programs for the people.Im not giving my healthcare so an rich fuck can get an yacht GTFO.If you wanna prove to me you care about the economy ztart taxing the rich and dont cut their own taxes.GTFO.

0

u/False_Scarcity_3402 4h ago

Then get the young people to vote. The old people will always pull the ladder up after themselves.

u/Valuable-Ad7285 4h ago

Riots like this are rarely started by the cause of demonstration. I’m a full believer in democracy, but not like this.

0

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 4h ago

This is how democracy works. Democracy where the people are complacent and don't burn down the streets, doesn't result in a govt that works for the people.

Bit from column A, bit from column B.

1

u/G25777K 5h ago

It's like pissing in your own bed and then expect to be OK at night time. All well Paris is a dump anyway, I say reap what they sow, destroy the city since no really cares outside France and it's probably a corrupt as it gets inside with the people making the decisions .

12

u/WuTangNameGenerat0r 5h ago

These particular people aren’t protesting anything. They just cause damage because they are opportunists.

6

u/AirborneCritter 5h ago edited 5h ago

As people have said, budget for schools and to prevent private education from being the only reliable source of education, as this austerity against public schools and defunds is the idea.

Other than that also the rage from years under a government that very very very rarely listens and imposes austerity through all aspects of life in France, all while the country is economically pretty rich.

12

u/STFUnicorn_ 5h ago

I doubt one of those protesters gives a shit about their education.

3

u/diedlikeCambyses 3h ago

Yes they do. If you have 3 apples over here, and 5 stones over there, how many ambulances can you smash?

1

u/AirborneCritter 5h ago

Which one ? Help us find the traitor

-1

u/STFUnicorn_ 3h ago

A single one. As in none.

1

u/AirborneCritter 0m ago

Oh I was joking but your sentence actually worked mb

0

u/Material_Charge_3152 4h ago

Yes because we all know that any sane human likes to put themselves at risk of arrest, injury, or death just for no reason. Protestors are just whiners and/or anarchists and the true brave member of society sit at home and comment online...

u/LessCrement 4h ago

Protesting for a good cause is the right thing to do. But you're so frickin naive if you think that most of the people there care about school facilities.

1

u/STFUnicorn_ 3h ago

Like you?

6

u/PracticalSyllabub514 5h ago

Protests probably started peacefully, the hen the government sent in the riot police to fuck with people, now they're fighting back.

4

u/ShoulderWhich5520 4h ago

From what I've gathered the current president (or their equivalent) has been encouraging the use of force on protesters, some incidents under reported include a protesters hand being blown off by a grenade of some kind, choking a 14 year old girl, and smashing a protesters head through a window.

1

u/disaster_incomin 4h ago

99% of the protest is still peaceful anyway

0

u/Environmental_Beat84 3h ago

So it's the police that made them riot and burn. Got it.

-3

u/secondchancecoastie 4h ago

Found the leftist

3

u/g2benji 4h ago

Found the american :D

3

u/Ordinary-Compote9558 5h ago

More money to rebuild the things they burned.

1

u/Spirited_Army1086 5h ago

They want to learn math and science without overcrowded classrooms

1

u/ViralTrendsToday 5h ago

Falling education standards, the rising cost of living, and skyrocketing fuel costs.

Doctors and engineers are not happy with their salaries...

1

u/Dense_Delay_2605 1h ago

They want their 72 virgins today.

1

u/hexdump74 5h ago

High schools to be adapted for correct conditions and teachers to be presents (not enough teachers currently). But the government decided not to listen when asked nicely and sent the police, which used disproportionnated violence. Now it's getting out of control as everybody is unfuriated against the gov and the police.

0

u/_Abiogenesis 5h ago

Disproportionate violence on minors.

It also grew beyond that since it resurrected the yellow vest movement to which goes beyond just gas prices. The protest is getting far larger.

0

u/BlueZybez 5h ago

Search it up

0

u/hAsLaK1 4h ago

For the first 2 or 3 weeks it was the high schoolers figuring out they could skip class if they protest and now it’s just everybody for every possible reason

1

u/ShoulderWhich5520 4h ago

That is kinda disingenuous, from what I've gathered taxes extracted from the working class we're being handed out to donors and companies instead of being invested in public services.

1

u/hAsLaK1 4h ago

I’m french and we had the same BS protest when i was in high school . The vast majority saw this as a great opportunity to skip class
