Peaceful protests aren't one of France strenghts.
56

Protests used to be way more violent in the first half of the 20th century. There used to be deaths possible at any strike from either side of the police or the protesters.

But historically their protests have gotten more done than American protests whether peaceful or not. France has a good reputation for having both actually. Their farmers protested peacefully and it made a difference. Look where the US is now.

Yes, but I’d like to add that some what paradoxically that’s a problem. They have an unsustainable pension system that the country’s economists agree is driving the country into unsustainable debt and when there’s some kind of attempt to to reform the French lose their minds. Now the literal IMF is telling the French to, “Get their house in order” a statement that you’d think would be reserved for developing nations, which are the ones who usually get attention from the IMF. Personally, I admire the French in their ability to spark a true protest with a voice to contend with, but in this case it may be to the detriment of the French people, sadly.
10
u/BobFuel 55m ago
The pension system is a mess to change because it was basically built like a generational ponzy scheme. To reform it means that whatever generation living through the reform gets fucked, hence why there's so much resistance to any change...

Governments created the issue, I didn't see any politicians resigning the second they realized this is broken. They kept cashing in their monthly checks and benefits, yeah? Good. Now they must fix it. If not, it's prison time and confiscation of their property. When one takes over a political office, he/she must assume full responsibility too.
You can't have the pie full and eat it too.

We Americans just need to straight up stop feeding into the system that's screwing us. Doing marches and holding up signs doesn't do shit.
Truckers, railroad workers, port workers, and warehouse workers need to go on strike. This will absolutely fuck the system if there is no economy flowing through. The big corpos will have to come to the table then, because we all know the big corpos and "our greatest ally" are really the ones in charge.
Our politicians are too beholden to them, it doesn't matter who you vote the fuck in. There's too much money being thrown around. We the people have the power to just halt everything. We then need to also support those on strike who are out of work. It just sucks knowing how divided we are now. Everyday the media pushes out a new story to divide us by race, gender, religion, etc. Your neighbor is not your enemy.
We are supposed to be the well organized ones that they are afraid of. Unfortunately the method of divide and conquer wasn't just a saying and it actually works.

Problem is everyone thinks the politician that matches their favorite color is on their side when that couldn't be further from the truth. IDC if your republican or democrat not a single damn politician cares about the common folk or working class because none of them are in those classes. Everything they campaign for is just to get your votes so that once they are in office they can expand their portfolios and networth.
Politicians dont make jack yet somehow always come out making lots more whether through lobbying deals, insider trading and so on.
But the mentality is always the same so nothing will ever change. People keep falling for the same lies again and again and refuse to do their own independent research and just blindly trust their favorite influencer, celebrity, or biased news source.

I agree wholeheartedly, but the main issue I think is fuels. At this point, we need them to live. People need gas to go to work, people need power for their homes and hospitals, etc. Where is the viable, affordable, attainable alternative? We can't just stay home and not work, not take our kids to school. I am wondering how we can overcome that one burden in particular as the market is pretty much cornered there.

Famers did it peacefully? Haha what a lie. They did vendalise a bunch of stuff. The only difference is the police response ordered by the government. Why? Because they have a better nuisance value with there equipment, they are scaring them. Also they mostly vote to the right. So they want to keep them on their side.

It’s an excuse but there’s an underlying reason for these types of riots. You need a cause for something like this. They could reform the schools into palaces with 4 teachers per classroom and it still wouldn’t be enough24
u/UseApprehensive4228 3h ago
Not quite. First of all, today was not about schools specifically, a whole lot of people from different lines of work joined in. Second of all, for the schools situation, you have to make a difference between the students who protest over actual revendications and the ones who took advantage of it to break stuff. I go to school in France and participated a little in peaceful protests, students are genuinely mad that their thing got ruined

The one who's party is know to have been funded by some SS and the notoriously racist negationist Jean Marie Le Pen.
The one party that always claims to defend workers' rights but never votes laws that would actually help them at the assembly, but acts all shocked when Macron or others from his governement violate peoples' rights or create austerity when it's what they have planned.
The one that had to have secret meetings with rich CEOs to reassure them about what the party wanted to do politically.

France is broke and need to cut something like 130b from it's budget annually by 2030.
If they don't, bond yields will skyrocket making their fiscal pain even more pronounced. They need to raise taxes, cut retiree benefits and raise the retirement age.
Either France does it on their own terms or the bond market will do it for them.
Their social benefits have been much too rich for too long for an economy that isn't growing. It sucks for young people but the math is the math.
France needs a president that will explain that to the French people as most are not experts in bond yields and budget deficits relative to GDP. The last few presidents have tried and the people have responded by rioting.
Great explanation of France's fiscal crisis
23
u/Available_Fact_3445 3h ago

You already have one of the highest tax burdens in Europe. If you add a wealth tax on top of that you'll kill whatever growth you already don't have. The wealth tax will not close the gap, and the reduced growth will start increasing the gap again since growth doesn't keep up with inflation.
There is no path out of this without some pain. At least make sure you have a future. Invest in your youth. Don't dump all your money into your elders, that's not a way to build a future.
13
u/S0uNDJaN 1h ago

You say that but France like many European countries have been living beyond their means. Everything is subsidized and government supported (from healthcare, pensions, transportation, education, etc). This worked when France had a smaller population and a bigger working class, but now with those costs growing, it's hard to keep up. The problem is though most people in France don't want to accept the reality that they can't pay for all this anymore. Both young and old aren't willing to make concessions.

Except that France is already one of the most heavily taxed countries in the world. We’re already well above the average for developed countries.
The problem isn’t “not enough taxes on the rich.”
The problem is that the money is massively wasted, that there’s waste and corruption at every level, and that we have a pension system that’s a ticking time bomb.Raising taxes even more solves nothing when the state spends 57% of GDP and the results (schools, hospitals, security, infrastructure) are stagnating or getting worse.
It’s not a revenue problem. It’s a management and structural problem. But hey, keeping on believing that “more taxes = more justice” when we’re already at the ceiling is intellectually comfortable.

I believe the pension they give at the moment is above the average wage and their retirement age is low. Add in an aging population and the money for pensions have to come from somewhere. I think the pension spending of the French government is like 10 to 12? Percent of their gdpz

Macron. People are fed up.
24
u/DueTour4187 2h ago
This is a very, very lazy, and completely false explanation. Macron has conducted a "centrist populist" policy, spent far too much money, and refused to reform the State. He certainly hasn't cut any funds or militarized the police, pretty much the opposite. But he hasn't made the left-right dialog impossible. What happened is that the left and the right both pretty much disappeared, or got radicalized into far-left and far-right which nurture each other in a stupid competition, and obviously have found their perfect scapegoat: Macron. You sound like a typical far-left propagandist. What we see here in the streets is an insurrection that's engineered, organized by the far left... to the benefit of the far-right.

And a bunch of scumbags will be out to defend these violent criminals the instant a police officer fires a rubber bullet...

French here.
Little explanation.
People you see in the video aren’t protesters, they’re just using the occasion to spread chaos and violence everywhere, most of them are just trying to steal from shops too.
In France we call them “casseurs” so “breakers” in English, they’re literally here just to break stuff.
On the other hand today there were more peaceful demonstrations, but sadly, because of these goobers we will only remember the bad images and the damage done by these losers.
Anyway have a good day
