They didn’t lose the ability to make it. It’s worse:
The industry has lost the patience.
It’s not that they can’t give us something because they don’t know how, it’s that they won’t do something because it’d take too much money in their eyes
The sad thing is this movie set the standard for that. The CGI in this movie was absolutely top notch, but the people working on it were given incredibly unreasonable deadlines which they had to meet by putting in more than double their normal hours. The end product is amazing as we can all see so the studios learned that they can put enough pressure to speed up timeliness without hurting the quality, and they haven't been able to unlearn that lesson since despite plenty of evidence to the contrary
We havnt lost the ability to make good cgi (although on an industry wide scale thats true), what we’ve lost is the patience and commitment (money wise) to actually support an art form.
If directors/production studios gave cgi artists the time and funding to actually focus on making it as an art form, it would look great! But instead, a majority of cgi today is rushed and budgets for cgi get cut smaller each year, and that has a real impact on the final product.
But instead, to get the movies out faster, production studios get even more work with less time to work on them, leading to rushed and overworked artists that makes the art work come out badly.
If you have a master painter low grade paint and half the time to make something, is it reasonable to expect the final products to look the same?
And on the flip side, I know it’s animation so it’s a different beast entirely, but look at the Miles Morales Spider-Man movies! SUCH good animation, and guess what? They were given the time and budget to make it work well, and it’s a visual master piece (and the story is amazing but Thats a different side to things)
TLDR: dont rush art and expect it to look good
u/jimjimmyjimjimjim i thought I should notify you too, since you were the one who brought it up

They couldn't do it because they've lost the ability to create "real" CGI.
