How To Overclocked my steam deck to get more performance but cpu clocks stuck at 3.5ghz
Ive changed the GPU and CPU frequencies only in the bios like your supposed to, have the watts up to 18 have plenty of room for cooling, why won't my CPU go up to the 3.8ghz I set? My GPU is happy to go up to 1.8ghz if I up the wattage so I'm just so confused about what I'm doing wrong?

18w is not enough to ramp up four cores to 3.8ghz alongside the gpu at 1.8ghz. At 23w you can see 2 cores boost to 4ghz from time to time if you increase your tdp/tdc.
What you're trying to do does not have enough power to them, and doesn't balance.
Fast/slow ppt is also mainly for the gpu.

I understand that, but look at the wattage, it's not pulling almost anything ATM and it's hard locked at 3.5ghz even when the GPU is almost not in use and it's not just the ppt I also changed max frequency in the bios, and the wattage isn't the problem or it wouldn't perfectly stick at 3.5

Do you want the explanation or do you want to be correct?
Because it feels like the latter.
Raising the PPT isnt necessarily raising the power budget for the CPU, and you're still power constrained across the APU, and across all cores.
This doesnt behave like a typical CPU and GPU.

I already did this and increased the CPU power budget, and I followed the entire stanto guide, and btw maybe ask before being wrong and passive aggressive/rude I don't care about being right here I just want it to work so no reason to imply otherwise, I was just explaining why it couldn't be what your implying. Otherwise they would not be right at 3.5 like they are when I game it's a software limit here not a hardware limit at this point, otherwise I would see very slightly over appear and that just doesn't happen.(You can change the CPU/APU’s TDP limit by going to:
AMD CBS > SMU Common Options > TDP Control > Manual AMD CBS > SMU Common Options > TDP > Change Value)0

Have you tried undervolting. Good overclocking Binned cpu's should do well going in the opposite direction. Testing can get you an idea of its full range. I had some OC GPUs that peaked at 250 watts running at 75 watts for coin mining, only -200hz. Right now i got my decks APU -30v-30v using -10% power which is -10% heat on standard clocks allowing longer boost clock

Yeah I actually have a really really good undervolt on -50mv across the board and it's fully stable too, I was very happy to have such a good binned one.

you do overvolt for the oc right? power waste can be 200% at peak speeds

Well no I undervolt and overclock my processors, I prefer the more mild but safe gains rather than the absolute more performance you get from that

And honestly I'm ok optimizing it later I'm just more concerned atm why it's perfectly stopping at 3.5ghz, it won't even inch over 3.5 at all

when applying a large undervolt on a ryzen you may not beable to hit normal boostclocks anymore as the last 100-200mhz Require extra overvolting, at a processers limit is it now wasting power, the power gets lost, Bleeding into the walls of material that it's made out of. you cant unvolt and overclock. my desktop ryzen 5900x default boost is 5.200hz but thats using 125 watts. if the steam deck had that much watts it maybe could hit the same speeds, But they're limiting it to 15 watts so they never reach into the inefficiency speed range.
edit: i think i heard of OCers getting the decks APU to 25-30watts with overvolts

Yeah I'm not trying to go that high, I only want 18w and a slight boost in performance, and it's only a wattage offset, I mean when I get home I'll try removing it but I'm pretty sure it's a software issue with the CPU not that, as my GPU is very happy going up to 1.8ghz with the undervolt as I upped the wattage.

Are you trying to play balatro 1280x800 at 240fps on 60hz or what am I looking at?

u/Anon312547 1d ago
No I'm just using it as a quick dirty test to push the clocks as high as possible since it doesn't need more GPU performance and scales much more into the cpu

You should use 3DMark/CinebenchR22 for this. I have a feeling Balatro isn’t gonna push the APU to where you want it to go.
There’s a pretty heavy CPU test in 3D mark

Ik just using this as a quick example to show people the issue, I've used actually testing apps too and no change.

the steam deck's apu is made to work at low wattages, i don't think you'd get a worthy amount of performance
