Question Does this mean we won’t be able to resell physical copies like we used to?
So if the physical edition is basically just a case with a download code instead of an actual disc, does that mean the second-hand market is pretty much gone? Once the code is redeemed, I assume you can’t resell the game like a normal physical copy anymore. Am I understanding this correctly?

We’ve knows this for months

Even if you go outside you can look the very top pinned posts before making your own?

Dog anyone interested in purchasing this game has seen it’s going to be digital only. At this point not knowing that means you live under a rock.

My question is why people would pay for that. I won't
4
u/lzwinky Aug 29 '26
I don’t get it either. The Switch had a lot of codes in the box and the Switch crowd wasn’t too pleased either.
I guess it’s for collectors wanting boxes?

Mebe it is some kind of way to bambuzle government regulatoy bodies. So the physical market looks like it is dayng to the regulators when in reality they are just killing it off because they want complete control over our purpurcheses. Anybody who knows even a little bit about physical games knows that Digital codes and Game key cards become useless the instant the verification server gets taken offline.

u/NatFluff Aug 29 '26
To bypass the age restrictions and digital ID of the PS-store in certain countries with tyrants as prime ministers who are pushing for digital ID and mass surveillance. I rather pay for this and have a LIVE, REAL, LIVING, HUMAN see my ID rather than giving my ID to some random server in a foreign country, where they then store my ID there waiting to get it leaked/hacked.
I hate my country so much.

Could still end up being cheaper than online if retailers want to get rid of their stock.
1
u/DiscountThug Sep 02 '26
The thing is that they won't but Sony is gonna use that as an excuse that their decision was correct because despite them gutting discs, people still weren't buying "physical editions" which is gonna get blamed on gamers and retailers while Sony higher management will keep smelling their own farts and pretending it's Channel N°5

u/buttercreamarray Aug 29 '26
I dont want a disc and dont see why I would. Haven't bought a disc in over a decade and have better junk to put on my shelves

u/GraveDiggerFan34 Aug 29 '26
Because discs suck ass. Personally my ps5 slim sounds like a blender whenever it reads a disc

I thought you want to own it, why do you wanna sell it then? :P

u/New-Two-1349 Aug 29 '26
I don't get it. Companies like Rockstar and Sony are multi-billion corporations and can easily afford to make physical versions of their games (plus, discs aren't that expensive to make) so why are they backing out of physical media?
4
u/uknrddu Aug 29 '26
Producing and shipping physical copies eats into the profit margin, even if it is a tiny amount. And money from the second hand market does not go to rockstar games.
Now, many people here may think: "There are a lot of people not willing or able to pay full price for a game."
But I can already see the dystopian solution for this problem.
They will use datasets from databrokers, the payment history from your bank account, your credit score and dynamic pricing, to calculate the highest price, that each person is willing and able to pay. And they will offer this price as a time limited super special deal, that somehow comes around every 10 days. Maybe they will even throw in a little bonus like in-game currency or a special car. Then they combine it with targeted ads on your social media, to flood your brain with highlight clips from other gta players.

its about control. they control your access to the game. at any point they can say well now if you want to play it its 20$ a month. 30$ a month. 50$ a month etc etc. and at anytime they can take it away. and if a product is good enough people will pay anything. rockstar easily could have appeased both digital and physical parties but they are playing a longer game to theoretically make more money in the end. its greed and its truly tragic and being the big company that they are it spells doom for the gaming industry as a whole.

u/SeeMeNotFall Aug 29 '26
so you can't sell it second hand, thus forcing you to use their online store to buy stuff at full price
2
u/MiyamotoKnows Aug 29 '26
In part to avoid the unpredictable nightmare that moronic, erratic tariffs have forced them to deal with.
2
u/Blindfire2 Aug 31 '26
Because! Think of the profit margins! Why should Sony/TakeTwo execs be just "Multi-Millionaires" guys like Musk can steal credit and become a "Trillionaire"! It's sad when an executive gets shafted because LAZY WORKERS refuse to work more hours for the same pay! Ridiculous, lazy, not even a team player...think of how many gold toilets these poor execs are struggling to afford :'( You guys should just be GRATRFUL okay?!

What if the PS6 is a hybrid device or handheld? Discs just wouldn’t work. Also, with hardware getting more and more expensive, streaming will get more important too, which is also not supported by discs. Imagine Steam games would be bound to discs. No SteamDeck. No AllyX etc and a 1/3 bigger Steammachine etc.. imagine you need to have said disc inserted, to stream…no one would want that.
Nintendo had the advantage of using cartridges…which is 100% more „fitting the times“ than some disc relic. At some point in time you need to cut that last century tech. Do have an alternative? Unclear.
The „no disc“ was addressed to partners, not consumers. Offering any explaination about why and what UX they are going for would also leak give Information about the PS6. So als long as we know nothing about the PS6, everything beside no disc is just fear and assumption.
The only „really“ negative aspect I can see is the control part. But that said, Windows, Mac, PSN, Xbox, Nintendo…all offer tightly controlled ecosystems and except Windows, people are choosing them exactly because of that…
And on R*? Their main product will be GTA online and…on how many discs or cartridges do you think GTA VI will be? One? ;)
Tbh, I find it pretty funny how people are fearmongering and watching this fallout while…people know literally nothing but already predict what the company will do to kill itself just to personally hurt you…

When Sony sells a game they get royalties. If you resell that game, they don't get royalties. That, in a nutshell, is the answer.
Their goal is elimination of the secondary market, to ensure every copy sold gives them the royalties they think they deserve.
It is the only industry that's allowed to, essentially, come into your home and end your ability to play, or simply remove something from your library, just like the IRS, only they aren't the government.
People seem to think this only applies to games/discs, but it effects movies, TV series, music and more.
They can pull them out of your library whenever they decide they don't want you to have them anymore.
Don't belive me? I "owned" several dozen Funimation digital titles, equaling over $500 in "purchases."
I was assured that these would be preserved when Funimation switched to Crunchyroll.
They were not.
They just ended the access and never said anything else about it.
All money spent was wasted. Gone in a corporate move that proves the point.
Digital is FULL PRICE RENTAL for an arbitrary, undetermined amount of time ... it is whatever THEY decide it is.
So, those Sony Bros and digital fanboys, go ahead and enjoy being constantly bent over a chair for the corporate overlords that control you.
2
u/Aeyland Aug 30 '26
Zero royalties, they sell them the disc. Once the store has the disc they can do whatever they want and Sony got the same amount from it whether it was sold or not.
I will continue to rent my games I've been renting for the one time cost for over a decade and enjoy that zero of them have disappeared even ones I bought on my 360.
I will also continue to support the need for physical as an option and more importantly, better digital ownership rights.
1
u/Lancelight50 Aug 31 '26
That’s one of the reasons why smart people are starting to rebuy physical media & are also returning to “p*****” in which is at an all time high again (You should know what word I’m talking about as I can’t say it on here due to risk being banned or some shit).
Only retards will still defend corporations on restricting their rights.

2
u/Mystic_x Aug 31 '26
Yes, that's the underlying intention: Killing the second-hand market, so that anybody who wants to play a game, no matter how old, has to pay full price for it, at the Sony PS Store.

What exactly do you not understand about a code in a box? Why is this reddit post needed?

If there was only a company that tried to make an online digital market place where you could trade and sell your licenses to others,… oh wait Microsoft tried but gamers made it extremely clear DRMs and online requirements were the devil.
1
u/Lancelight50 Aug 31 '26
There will always be a second-hand market. It’s not because one company wants to be cheap on not wanting to put the entire game on a 4K Blu-Ray disc that must cost pennies by now.

Truth is, by re-selling, you're breaking copyright laws by profiting off the sale of someone else's IP.
1
u/hoodyracoon Sep 01 '26
That's not how that works,
The license follows the goods, if that's how it works you couldn't sell your car because you don't own the IP to the entertainment system?
We're actually like more broadly taking your statement you can't sell your car at all because the entire car is intellectual property owned by whatever manufacturer..

u/Independent_Mud2794 Aug 29 '26
No it doesn’t. You still can resell physical copies like you used to - there simply won’t be any new physical copies in the future.
2
u/Roccondil-s Aug 29 '26
You can resell the code in a box that you've already used?
1
1
u/ThePatriotGamer Aug 29 '26
They can still end access whenever they want. Read the EULA if you can (it's all legalese and difficult to get through).
You can filter it with an AI for a readable summary of the agreement.
Older systems that aren't required to have net access will play, but anything Xbox 360 and later and PS3 and later can be ended, but mostly PS4/Xbox One and later are applicable.
Also any digital music, ebooks, and movies/TV series are under the same threat..

1
u/Lancelight50 Aug 31 '26
Only for online only games. All others, you can just easily go to your console settings & switch off internet access. Also, the First Sale Doctrine overrides EULA in terms of ownership.
0
u/JiminyWillikerz Aug 29 '26
Now you’re getting it. You will never own this game. In the future you will subscribe to computing, since personal computing is no longer a thing, you will be paying monthly to access the cloud, you will have no local storage. You can no longer download, you must stream, you must rent, never own. Rent an apartment, rent a car, rent your entertainment, even your leisurely activities, gaming, music, movies, books will no longer have physical copies for you to own. You will rent. You will own nothing, and you will be happy. Cyberpunk is here, with very little emphasis on the punk, we’re really just getting Cyberfucked.
