Discussion Since it's Deadbeat's 1 year anniversary I'm curious how y'all would rate the tracks!

Personally I really really enjoy Deadbeat, when it first released I didn't know how to feel about it because I was comparing it to his other works, but on my second listen I really enjoyed it! I personally revisit this project pretty often (I don't play it too much so i dont overplay it tho haha!) anyways here's my ranking of the songs, I really love every song off this album so it was a bit difficult for me to rank them (this is how I am with every Tame Impala project)

  1. Piece Of Heaven
  2. End Of Summer
  3. Afterthought
  4. Dracula
  5. My Old Ways
  6. Not My World
  7. Oblivion
  8. Loser
  9. Obsolete
  10. No Reply
  11. Ethereal Connection
  12. See You On Monday

as stated earlier: It is very difficult for me to rank this album outside of my top 3, because like every other Tame Impala project I love every track off the album!

If anyone does comment their rankings, please remember that opinions are subjective and even if you disagree there's no need to be disrespectful, just be respectful! <3

still remember when this album came out, and i stayed up all night re-listening to it over and over again. i genuinely don’t understand the hate for Deadbeat, and i think the only reason people dislike it is because it doesn’t sound like his earlier music. this baffles me, because you can’t expect someone to stay the same for over 15 years. i’m glad Dracula and Loser and gaining some attention because it could show people how good Deadbeat actually is.

Discussion Kevin Parker & Rufus Du Sol Collab. Thoughts?

• Upvotes

With the trajectory Kevin is headed with his music, can we possibly see a collaborative project with Rufus Du Sol? Both from Australia, and both have that fire in them, drums and synths. Seeing Rufus Du Sol latest live tour video, I couldn’t help but imagine how they would fit in. They would definitely complement each other with their sounds. What are your thoughts?

Discussion Question on Reality In Motion

does anyone know what the vocals say during 2:34-2:38 and again at 2:51-2:54. It’s not on the spotify lyrics and genius just has a “([?])” for this part.

I’ve been digging the song lately and this small vocal has been stuck in my head. anyone know what kevin is saying here??

Tour Discussion Melb N3

So grateful to finally see Tame Impala live.

What a concert! It was loud, guitars were rocking and the bass drum was pumping!

So jealous won't get to see Alter ego performed, but it was amazing to be apart of a mostly seated audience, that were on their feet standing and dancing the whole night.

I think for me, Eventually was a highlight. I was almost brought to tears, it really rocked the joint.

Light show and confetti canons were amazing too.

It was interesting to see the age demographic, mostly teeny boppers and young adults, families which was endearing to see, and then few 30-40s +.

Honestly appreciate the show, the effort that goes in, and to be able to see him play live is truly amazing experience, whether you're a stan or casual fan.

Thank you Kevin.

Everyone enjoy!

Tour Discussion Tame Impala Sydney (20/10) – anyone keen to meet up?

Hey everyone, I'm going to the show in Sydney this Tuesday (20/10) and I'll be in GA standing. Was originally meant to go with some friends but they ended up not being able to make it, so figured I'd see if anyone else is going solo or would be keen to meet up and go as a group.

I saw Kevin and Justice at Hyperdrama last year and it was honestly one of the best shows I've ever been to, so I'm pretty excited for this one.

Even if you're not looking to meet up, would be keen to chat with anyone else going! Can't wait for Tuesday,

Tour Discussion Will merch be sold online? (Melb)

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question but I never go to concerts so I don't fully understand how concert merch works.

I went to the Melbourne concert last night and it was amazing! I bought a top but there was an exclusive poster that I'm kind of regretting not buying. I'm so tempted to go into the city and buy it from the merch stand outside but that's a bit of a journey for me lmao.

I was wondering if city/country exclusive merch (like posters, tops, etc) typically get sold online after the tour? So far online it's only the general merch (which is understandable) but I'm wondering if that's going to change. Again I'm really regretting not buying this poster but I don't even know if I have the time to go, plus tonight is the last Melbourne show.

Thanks in advance!

Tour Discussion Gig review

I saw Tame Impala last night in Melbourne. Overall great gig.

Here are some further musings:

  1. Great energy. The gig was at Rod Laver Arena (the main tennis court for the Australian Open). I get why bands of a big enough popularity book arenas, for both ticket sales and ease of light shoes/setups, but I do find them generally far worse than venues with some soul to them (e.g. the Forum in Melbourne, or an outdoors gig on a summer evening…).
  2. I see a lot of live music and have seen numerous shows at Rod Laver (including Radiohead, Flight of the Concords, Khruangbin, The Streets

, numerous others) and none had the entire crowd on their feet the whole time. I was in the GA area, but all the seated area were standing start to finish.

The light show was pretty trippy. Sometimes nice visuals with a band can be cool, and I guess having an arena setup helps with this.

  1. The age range was wide and skewed young. I am 42, so many people seem young by comparison, but there were many teenagers (including ones being escorted by a parent) as well as people up to my age and older.
I know, from reading posts in this subreddit the last few weeks, that there are many who lament the latest album and new fans (it’s not like the olden days when you were the real fans and everything seemed so bright and shiny and tingly, but you were also in the adolescent/young adult age when your favourite music is so meaningful and then it feels like everything changes and your favourite artist is not like they used to be and you liked them before they were cool, but you have actually just aged and need to get over yourselves).
The energy was good. People were dancing. It’s nice for people to have fun in the world.

  2. The Deadbeat songs were better live (and I like the album). The solo techno section on the second stage hit especially hard.

I was accused of ragebaiting the other day when I replied to someone with my ordered list of favourite albums (1. InnerSpeaker, 2. Deadbeat, 3. The Slow Rush, 4. Lonerism, 5. Currents). But it’s honestly a good thing for artists to explore different things and not just pump out the same old every time (e.g. Radiohead). It’s also okay to be challenged and explore different music genres, and why not with someone who is already a preferred artist.

I base the above comment on the fact that lots of people angry with Deadbeat clearly aren’t fans of EDM based on this sub. Hilariously I met one of you in the crowd - I was dancing with my eyes closed during the techno set and I was suddenly aware of someone talking to me. Long story short, a drunk guy (about 35) was telling me, in an annoyed tone, that it’s not even the same band anymore, who have we come to see anyway? But it was loud, and I had a gummy before the show, so it took a while to twig what he was on about, and when I finally did I just shook my head that I couldn’t hear him and went back to dancing. I’m not sure if he was already annoyed at me or this is what annoyed him but he was getting agitated and then trying to mock me dancing and his GF was trying to get him to disengage and they eventually went away.
I didn’t care. Like I said I had had a gummy, was feeling chill and happy, was finding with the music, and just watched it all like a strange play on my periphery (I have found when a bit stoned that whenever you can’t understand why someone is behaving really weirdly and angry it is because they are drunk). Anyway, it was nice to meet one of the haters clearly loving life…

  1. I should also note that just over one year ago, when the album came out, me and my wonderful GF of 21 years had just arrived in Japan and were road tripping around Hokkaido. Deadbeat was one of the albums we were listening to (Daft Punk Discovery and Air Moon Safari were also on rotation) and it was a great time.
However during the trip she found a breast lump and on return to Australia was diagnosed with breast cancer. After literally a year she has just come good after chemo, surgery, and radiotherapy (still having 3 weekly neoadjuvant treatment for a few months yet) and her cancer is officially in remission, so it was a great way to bookend a difficult year and also makes the music hit a little more.
