Food (Only on Friday) Griled cheese
Grilled cheese and tomato soup is a terrible combination. It doesn't go well together, and canned tomato soup is terrible.
I love grilled cheese. If I have fresh tomato, I'll put a slice on before closing the sandwich (I cook both sides at once, then put them together) grilled cheese goes well dipped in a good marinara (think the good semi-chunky stuff that you get with mozzarella sticks) tomato soup? Hard pass.

First of all, that sounds delicious; second of all, "I don't like this food" is not a 10th dentist opinion. Everyone has their own food tastes.

u/CakeSpade 23h ago
i've been battling myself on whether or not to post that i cannot stand strawberries, but i guess i'll keep it to this comment now

u/Aervanath 23h ago
That's more of a thousandth dentist take; who doesn't like fruit?
10
u/sushibeginner 23h ago
My dad hates strawberries. I think it's pretty common.
1
u/CakeSpade 23h ago
Nice! I've never met anyone else who does, other than those who are allergic. I like fruit! The yellow ones.
2
u/RiSz-Turtle 23h ago
I like fruit but I don’t like strawberries or watermelon. Love apples, grapes, oranges and banana

Strawberries remind me of a fresh bruise, both in looks and texture. This is probably the 1000th dentist part of my disdain for them. I call them bruise fruit and people look at me like I'm an alien.

I don't like watermelon, but I don't mind being 10th dentist on that. Disliking strawberries should be illegal, though.

You make me sick.
A grilled cheese consists of only these following items. Cheese. Bread with spread (usually butter). This entire subreddit consist of "melts". Almost every "grilled cheese" sandwich i see on here has other items added to it. The fact that this subreddit is called "grilledcheese" is nothing short of utter blasphemy.
Let me start out by saying I have nothing against melts, I just hate their association with sandwiches that are not grilled cheeses. Adding cheese to your tuna sandwich? It's called a Tuna melt. Totally different. Want to add bacon and some pretentious bread crumbs with spinach? I don't know what the hell you'd call that but it's not a grilled cheese.
I would be more than willing to wager I've eaten more grilled cheeses in my 21 years than any of you had in your entire lives. I have one almost everyday and sometimes more than just one sandwich. Want to personalize your grilled cheese? Use a mix of different cheeses or use sourdough or french bread. But if you want to add some pulled pork and take a picture of it, make your own subreddit entitled "melts" because that is not a fucking grilled cheese.
I'm not a religious man nor am I anything close to a culinary expert. But as a bland white mid-western male I am honestly the most passionate person when it comes to grilled cheese and mac & cheese. All of you foodies stay the hell away from our grilled cheeses and stop associating your sandwich melts with them. Yet again, it is utter blasphemy and it rocks me to the core of my pale being.
Shit, I stopped lurking after 3 years and made this account for the sole purpose of posting this. I've seen post after post of peoples "grilled cheeses" all over reddit and it's been driving me insane. The moment I saw this subreddit this morning I finally snapped. Hell, I may even start my own subreddit just because I know this one exists now.
You god damn heretics. Respect the grilled cheese and stop changing it into whatever you like and love it for it what it is. Or make your damn melt sandwich and call it for what it is. A melt.

Oh my god we're bringing back the melt vs grilled cheese controversy. Fuck yeah. I'm on your side 150%. Someone get the original best of reddit thread haha
13
u/the_D1CKENS 22h ago
There is no controversy. Anything that's not bread and cheese can't be considered a grilled cheese. I thought we settled this years ago

Just starting to read this made me realize how off the rails the Sims went after I stopped playing.

I started with ts2, but I feel like it's always been off the rails, even in the original. 4 is probably the most tame (as long as you stay mod free haha)

I used to agree with this. But I have come to have a more nuanced opinion. If the added ingredient overshadows the cheese, it has become a melt. But if the added ingredient would be considered a condiment or accompaniment on other sandwiches, and the cheese is still the star, it remains a grilled cheese.
Adding a slice of tomato doesn't make it a "tomato melt." Adding a squirt of mustard doesn't make it a "mustard melt."
5
u/modernjayhippie 17h ago
Adding a squirt of mustard doesn’t make it a mustard melt but it does make our lord and savior Jesus Christ weep
2
u/No-Lettuce4441 13h ago
I could see it working in a "more sophisticated" grilled cheese. A nice cheese blend and a small amount of a whole grain mustard on a nice bread.

u/UBIK_707 16h ago
I will on occasion add only caramelized onions, and I'll be damned if that isn't still a grilled cheese.
2
u/Hatta00 17h ago
It really does. If I order a grilled cheese, and get either of those things on it, I'm fucking disappointed.
I like both of those things, but a grilled cheese is a specific thing that includes neither of them.
1
u/Awdayshus 5h ago
Well, this is why most menus include a description. And shame on any restaurant that called it "Grilled Cheese" without telling you it has a slice of tomato and an smear of fancy mustard.
3
u/No-Lettuce4441 13h ago
I agree with your comment about melts, as well as the response to yours about clarifying the difference between the two. Same with macaroni and cheese. If yiu put too much else in, it becomes a cheesy casserole.
However, I didn't post this in grilledcheese. I didn't crosspost or whatever else. This was posted in 10thDentist. If it wound up crossposted, it was not done by or, or at least not on purpose. I suspect it was the algorithm.
I respect your passion. Keep on it!

Dutch tosti's also almost always come with a slice of ham in the sandwich. That's why I can't fathom having just toasted bread with cheese. Feels incomplete.
0
u/CopaceticOpus 22h ago
You absurd purist. A grilled cheese doesn't stop being a grilled cheese because you throw a piece of bacon or a couple slices of jalapeño on it. That's called adding a topping or a condiment. People do the same to countless other foods without magically transforming them into something completely different.
A melt is different because it's a full sandwich before the cheese is even melted on. The cheese is a complement to the sandwich, but not the sole primary component.

It's illegal for me to say what I think should happen to people that share your opinion.

Right on the ingredients except for one missing, mayo. Butter on the outside for crispiness and mayo on the inside for creaminess

u/NoShameStockBoy 21h ago
Correct, sir. A Philly cheesesteak would be a grilled cheese by the loose definition you describe. Both delicious… not both grilled cheese though. Words matter. Definitions matter.
24
u/alvysinger0412 23h ago
Sounds like you just don't like canned tomato soup. If you can appreciate how tomato dovetails with grilled cheese, you're fine imho
6
u/CopaceticOpus 23h ago
Canned tomato soup is awful. It's too sweet and runny. But it's easy to make good tomato soup with canned crushed tomatoes
2
u/alvysinger0412 23h ago
Absolutely true. I don't even fault OP for not liking it even though I'm fine with canned used as a dipping sauce.
6
u/Lawlzstomp 23h ago
I have no interest in tomato soup, especially if it's canned. I would much rather have marinara as a dipping sauce for the grilled cheese. I grew up with BLT and tomato soup nights, and I don't care for that combo either.
1
1
u/cynicalicoffee 23h ago
Eesh. I'm trying to think of what soup would go best with a BLT, but tomato soup is nowhere on that list.
So far, I'm leaning toward just chicken broth.

Ok, so what I’m gathering here is that you don’t like canned tomato soup. Canned tomato soup does suck. But you are not limited to canned tomato soup. The tomato soup I make is basically marinara sauce. I don’t like dairy in it and I want it thick and tomato-y.
You can have that. You do like it. You just don’t like canned tomato soup.
2
u/Cigarette-milk 23h ago
I just had garlic grilled cheese with homemade tomato soup yesterday. It was so good.

u/Milk_Mindless 22h ago
Oh yeah canned stuff is terrible
Its a reason why it should be emergency rations not your daily 1 a 5

>I cook both sides at once, then put them together
What the absolute fuck
1
u/No-Lettuce4441 13h ago
I cook both top and bottom slice on the griddle/skillet, when the bread is to my preference, I put the two together to make the sandwich. When I tomato them, this is when the tomato is added, so it doesn't cook down too much.
1
u/Dr_Ingheimer 12h ago
This is the normal part of your post, to be honest. Shouldn’t be downvoted for a normal way of making grilled cheese.

4
u/CrownOfAngels 23h ago
This is an odd take. I am starting to wonder if OP has trauma associated with tomato soup. Dude puts a whole slice of a tomato INTO his grilled cheese and wouldn't mind dipping it into marinara but God forbid tomato soup? How bizarre.

u/No-Lettuce4441 13h ago
The canned soup touched me in my nono square when I was a child.
No, I always thought it was terrible, and when I finally heard of the combo in my 20s, it made no sense and in fact was horrible when I tried it in my 30s.
1
u/LiaSunwolf3 23h ago
That's my favorite way to eat both grilled cheese and tomato soup, and I dunk the sandwich in for every single bite. Have my upvote
1
u/Sarcastic_Rocket 23h ago
You can be like my wife and do grilled cheese and ramen. Plain marchan chicken ramen, little extra broth to dip. I don't know man

I mean, valid opinion if you've only ever had canned tomato soup. Absolutely wild take if you're talking about a decent scratch-made soup though.

I like to roast my tomatoes with garlic, basil, thyme, oregano, s&p, and olive oil. Then remove the skin and put it all in a pot with some tomato paste and more garlic and salt. I just use an immersion blender but you could use a blender. I add some veggie of chicken broth (depending on what I have) and I'll add some to that to get the consistency I want. Sometimes I'll roast a red pepper over a flame and then peel it and add it in too. Or buy the kind already done in a jar.
It's really good to dip the grilled cheese in
If I'm doing canned tomato soup, I just add basil, s&p, garlic, and cook it on the stove for a while so the flavors can meld. You can oomph up canned soup! I recommend it. If you like it dipped in marinara, just add some Italian seasoning to it, do half the water, add garlic, and just enjoy it like a thick soup

I had never heard of this combo until I was in my 20s and it was in a Campbell’s commercial. I do not get the hype, despite loving each independently.
1
u/smile_saurus 15h ago
Depends where it is from. My husband and I decided to order tomato soup and grilled cheese from a local chain restaurant. The soup was watered down, had no flavor whatsoever, and the sandwich was worse: the cheese was not melted at all, and it was clear they had microwaved the bread.
So the next weekend I made my tomato basil soup, plus a tomato jam. Made grilled cheese sandwiches with provolone and parmesan cheese with a bit of the tomato jam in there plus a few slices of bacon. Much better.

u/arapaima-fishie 14h ago
I used to dip my grilled cheese in ketchup as a kid… sometimes I go back because I miss it so much haha. But nah, grilled cheese and tomato soup is awesome lol, I salt and season my canned tomato soup so it tastes just the way I like it, same goes for my grilled cheese. I could never pass that combo up 🤤

u/Aggleclack 11h ago
This is probably very weird, but I grew up with tomato soup and a peanut butter sandwich. I thought it was normal lol

A slice of tomato on the grilled cheese? That’s absolutely disgusting 🤢 🤮
1
u/KeterClassKitten 23h ago
Good crusty bread and a good mozzarella cut thick. Make a grilled cheese with that. Dip into marinara sauce.
Far superior.
1
u/freyaliesel 20h ago
Mozzarella doesn’t have enough flavor on its own. It needs something with some bite to stand against the marinara.
1
u/KeterClassKitten 19h ago
Well... that is definitely an opinion you posted there.
1
u/freyaliesel 19h ago
As far as culinary professionals go, it’s a pretty common one. Mozzarella is a very mild cheese, and when it’s added to things, it’s usually there for texture. There’s a reason why you don’t see mozzarella as the only cheese in a grilled cheese hardly at all and basically also never in a mac & cheese. It’s typically paired with a stronger flavored cheese.

Canned tomato soup is really revolting, so it goes with nothing.
1
u/Kscarpetta 22h ago
Use heavy Whipping cream instead of water, add some spices, finish with parm. Is it as good as homemade? No. It is shit? Also no.
That's what I'm having for dinner tonight.

Is it really a grilled cheese if we fry them on a pan and not grill them on a grill? Its a fried cheese

Had to look it up. I've had one. Pudgy pie. Calzone. Empanada. Every culture has some form of a sealed sandwich in some form of bread.

So OP must not like pizza. Same thing.
1
u/freyaliesel 20h ago
OP doesn’t like tomato soup. He said he was fine with marinara, and pizza sauce is way closer to marinara than tomato soup.
